In the fourth year of the Chengzou Emperor’s reign, a nationwide selection of women was held to enter the palace. Jiang Xueyi, the second daughter of the Minister of Justice, a third-rank official, was chosen to enter the palace.

Everyone inside and outside the palace knew that the Minister of Justice was a just and fair man, with a reputation for being strict and impartial, earning him the nickname “Iron-Faced Yanluo” (a reference to the god of the underworld). However, few people knew that his daughter, Jiang Xueyi, was a beautiful and gentle soul, with a lovely face and a kind heart.

In the harem, where women competed for the emperor’s favor and plotted against each other, Jiang Xueyi stood out as a breath of fresh air, with a warm and gentle demeanor that won her many admirers. Among the 11 new women selected to enter the palace, she was the most favored by the emperor and was nicknamed “The Flower of Eloquence”.

However, only Jiang Xueyi knew how difficult it was to survive in the treacherous world of the palace, where one misstep could lead to disaster. But she was careful and strategic, always thinking several steps ahead, and managed to navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries to rise through the ranks.

From her initial position as a noble lady, Jiang Xueyi rose to become the emperor’s favored concubine, and was renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and kindness. The Jiang family was filled with pride and honor, and everyone in the palace admired and respected Jiang Xueyi.

But what people didn’t know was that beneath her pure and gentle exterior, Jiang Xueyi was a cunning and ruthless player, who would stop at nothing to achieve her goals. And when she wasn’t smiling, it was often a sign that someone was about to meet a terrible fate.

Note: The female protagonist has a very stable emotional state, always smiling, but when she’s not smiling, someone is usually in for a world of trouble.

One-sentence summary: In the six palaces, the women’s faces are devoid of color, but the intention is: no matter when or where, always love yourself the most.

I really enjoyed this novel! The story is well-paced, the characters are intriguing, and the complexities of harem politics kept me highly engaged.

In this genre of palace/harem politics, it leans more towards being realistic, with the Emperor having many concubines that he favours, so there were times that I also admired the female lead for remaining realistic (I could never lol). The female lead is also calm, clever, and not unnecessarily cruel - a balance that I find many similar-type novels struggle with.

While the story is centred on the female... more>> lead, there is also good characterization of the Emperor. It's a satisfactory and happy ending. I started off with the translations which are good so far, and the MTL is easily readable.

I'm off to read this author's other novels! (It looks like the author writes a lot in this genre) <<less

It was a nice read for me. It was thrilling. No transmigration, no reincarnation, and no dreams whatsoever.

The MC is very smart and she is not really a good person, like "I will not touch you if you not touch me". She schemes as well, but she has a bottomline.

The ML knows her antics and knows she wants power to protect herself, so he is accomodating.

I will not spoil the story, for me it was good. The rating doesn't matter. Thank you the author and the translator...😎😎😎

Its good but not great. A typical imperial harem story with the only difference being that the MC is not a transmigrator or reincarnator. She really does survive off her own wits and knowledge and has no "cheats" so to speak. It does explore the psychological effects of having to struggle and survive through harem schemes will have, even on the emperor, the winner of the fight, which I found interesting. But at the end of the day, the story adds nothing new to the genre. If you like palace... more>> intrigue novels and are looking for a new one to read, then this is good. If you're tired of them, then it's not a particularly interesting read. <<less
