Marriage first then love. It's applicable for our MC (Mu Peixuan). His character is very well-written with his intelligence on the battlefield and court politics. Strong, intelligent and domineering on the battlefield, a tianquan (Alpha) who refused to take things lying down.

Then, there's ML (Duan Linzhou), the scheming businessman whose connections put his name up like a well-known brand. A zhongyong (Beta) works behind the scenes, pulling strings and connections to get even or do work despite having a foot in the grave.

MC & ML have good chemistry with each... more>> other, even when they didn't check their Bazi (ancient Chinese date of birth which is used to see if you're compatible with each other), they make the relationship work which is applaudable in this.

Since this is ancient Chinese setting, war and court politics go hand in hand with each other.
Spoiler

Sacrifices of side characters are inevitable which will be mentioned.

[collapse]

This novel really geared you up for the ride. The earlier chapters would be the adjustment period between MC & ML followed by the war then court politics. These chapters will glued you to the seat as you read to see who will emerge victorious, the strategies taken and its closure.

*Will edit this review once I catch up to the rest of the chapters. <<less

This novel is quite politically heavy (honestly, it feels like politics played a role throughout the entire story). It's an ancient ABO genre, it's my first time reading ABO in ancient setting, quite fresh, and it's mpreg (it's a twin xD they appeared in the extra) with quite a lot of smut.

The ml, what can I say? He's young but incredibly mature. I really appreciate that even though he was unhappy with the marriage, he never once embarrassed the MC in public about this. I've read so many arranged marriage... more>> stories where the ML openly shows his displeasure, causing the MC to suffer or be bullied. But he wasn't like that. Though, to be fair, he did say some hurtful things to him in private during the early days of their marriage.

The MC, on the other hand, was incredibly smart and capable. What's really tragic about him is his weak body due to being poisoned, he was even on the verge of death by the end. Still, thanks to his cautious and strategic nature, he handled things brilliantly.
Spoiler

Before leaving, he made sure to warn the ml's trusted allies to keep an eye on that commander or whoever it was at the border. That move was crucial in preventing the bratty emperor from pulling anything shady. Honestly, with the emperor's personality, I can't imagine how things would've turned out otherwise :3

[collapse]

As for that bratty emperor, if I had to point out one thing I felt a bit dissatisfied with in the novel, it would be the whole rebellion plot. I read on a Chinese review site that the ML would be forced into rebellion, but I didn't expect him to be pushed from all sides like that. And of course, the emperor just made everything worse.
Spoiler

I was honestly waiting for the ML to fully rebel and give that bratty emperor the spanking he deserved lol. The emperor's lucky the MC was on the brink of death at the time. The ML who was never believed in fate or destiny, but was at the end of rope, actually kneeled and prayed in front of a Buddha statue, promising to minimize the loss of life if it means the MC could live. And miraculously, the MC recovered, which is why the rebellion never actually ended up happening (tho that bratty emperor still die from illness later).

[collapse]

There's also a side couple — an in*est couple. Their story only shows up in a few chapters in the extras, so if it makes you uncomfortable, you can skip those parts (it's just like 3–4 chapters). But honestly, even though it's in*est, I ended up really liking the cp, and I genuinely felt heartbroken for their love😭.
Spoiler

It was already incredibly hard to be in love with your own brother, knowing your relationship can never be accepted or seen by the world. And to make things worse, the author even decided to kill one of them off, huhu. Though I never expected this pair, still, no matter the situation, I just hate seeing couples get tragic endings. Especially the kind where they're separated by death. Luckily there was an extra where it seemed they reincarnated and met again.

[collapse]

Overall it was good, really really good and the length was quite long compared to Guan Shan Yue, the novel by the same author. I really like this author xD they've never disappointed me so far, hehe. <<less
