Shen Que had two secrets.

First, he was mute—and also had a hidden medical condition that couldn’t be exposed.

Second, he harbored inappropriate, secret feelings for his lord.

He told no one about either secret. But one night, a stranger discovered the first one.

That man used Shen Que’s secret to coerce him, pushing him step by step into submission, into falling further and further…

And yet, Shen Que never noticed—this man was taking more and more from him, while his own prince was giving him more and more attention.

Then, one day… Shen Que discovered he was pregnant. Panicked, he fled in the dead of night, not even bothering to pack.

Xie Shiguan discovered a secret about his trusted bodyguard—and it hooked him, haunted him.

Every night he dreamed of the little mute man.

So he disguised himself, altered his appearance, placed a needle in his throat to suppress his voice, and infiltrated Shen Que’s quarters.

At first, he only wanted a taste of the mute beauty.

He wanted the thrill of bullying someone honest and obedient—like a loyal hound.

Just a plaything. Once bored or soiled, he could throw him away anytime.

But then… Shen Que ran.

Xie Shiguan was furious. He mobilized all of the prince’s forces to find him. But the final report said, “Shen Que fell into the river during his escape. He drowned.”

He was just a mute… just an object. So why did his heart ache like this?

He refused to believe it. As long as Shen Que’s body wasn’t found, he would not believe he was dead.

One year later, the regent prince heard of a villager in the south who looked a lot like Shen Que. He raced through the day and night, exhausting several horses, and finally—by a mountain stream—he saw him.

That little mute was carrying a bamboo basket on his back, and in his arms… a soft, tender-skinned child.

Xie Shiguan’s rage erupted—

In just a year, he already had a child with some other woman?!

4/5 Not good at reviews so I'll use bullet points. I MTLed a majority of the story. I don't know if I would reread unless it gets fully translated, as the MTL is a bit clunky. But it's still a manageable.

In general:

    • Fair amount of angst and graphic imagery. The writing really sets up the brutality of ancient times, especially for the poor, the disabled, women, servants, etc.
    • Political/court intrigue is set up early on. It is set aside in the middle, and is resolved later in the story.
    • Not a good story if you're looking for fluffy romance. It's mainly yearning and obsession until the last third of the story, I would say.
    • Wouldn't say it's so successful in the wife chasing crematorium genre for those...

... who are expecting a satisfying groveling arc. But the chasing and yearning is fun.

    • The side characters are quite charming. Found myself rooting for their well-being throughout. No side couples tho
    • The villains definitely affect plot significantly through their actions but not a lot of characterization aside from...
      Spoiler

the incompetent child emperor and one of ML's former bed partners

      .
    • No in-depth smut scenes. Kinda vaguely described but definitely lets you know what's going on.
MC:

    • Incredibly tough to a fault. Endures a lot of pain, physically and emotionally in his past and present, but often afraid to ask for help, for good reason due to his condition
    • Endures a lot of ridicule and humiliation but is able to stand up for himself if needed, EXCEPT in opposition to ML. ML is his savior, he obeys unquestioningly, until he doesn't.
    • Has a deep sense of compassion and charity, even for people he barely knows, this helps and hurts him.
    • Is deeply insecure about his disability, his condition, his status as a s*ave, his appearance.
    • Really just want him to find happiness the entire time reading : (so much hardship, almost made me cry for him a couple times
    • "Has nothing but values everything"
ML:

    • Very typical tyrant ML: Powerful, coveted, handsome, feared, arrogant, cruel, possessive, beastly piece of sh*t lol
    • Playboy
    • Would definitely kill someone over spilled milk
    • Loves to tease and manipulate MC
    • Obsessed, will move mountains to get what he wants, even if he ends up pushing it away...
      Spoiler

.. which is what he ends up doing to MC upon revealing his deception and blackmail scheme. The parts in which ML learns the error of his ways is glossed over a bit. But he does have a lot of regret once he sees how his actions have briefly traumatized MC and eventually changes his behavior. But he is still haughty and arrogant til the end.

      [collapse]
    • He has a childish charm about him but might be hard for some readers to forgive him in the end, as his actions are very severe but not treated with severity in the story
      Spoiler

except for one moment when it seems like MC experiences one singular episode of PTSD from the r*pe ML committed. But it never happens again after that.

      [collapse]
    • "Has everything but values nothing"
Overall, I liked it. What motivated me to keep reading was to see MC find happiness, because he is ultimately a very likeable protagonist. Pitiable but not in the annoying damsel-in-distress way, as he is very resilient. His mutual relationships with his found family, travel companions, kind benefactors, etc. were also a good reprieve from the harsh society that he inhabits, where many people are greedy, pe*verted, and cruel.

His relationship with the ML is a tough read in some ways. Communication is a big issue due to the timidness of MC and how out-of-touch ML is as a result of his role as a Prince who was given everything he wanted without question. It's hard to say if the development of their romance is natural, but I did like their dynamic once their issues started being resolved.
