It’s a 1 star for the reason why MC and FML started „fake couple” relationship. It’s so dumb and shows how one dimensional author’s thinking is. The excuse why they started the fake relationship is because FML wanted to spend more time with MC, and here is the advise from anyone with brain - you don’t have to be a couple to be able to spend time together (no way really???). Yes, the sole f*cking excuse FML gave MC to start the f*cking fake relationship is not exactly boys confessing... more>> to her or some sh*t, but mainly, because she wants to spend time with her childhood friend. Let me say it again with her CHILDHOOD FRIEND (well she likes him but MC doesn’t know that and the fact that he accepted such an excuse is just dumb). What’s wrong with her? Why can’t she just come to MC’s desk and spend time together at school if she wants to so badly?? Is she ashamed of him or what? I feel like author never had any junior/elementary/highschool experience. Imagine:

You and your friend (or childhood friend) go to the same school and same class, what’s the most normal thing you would do on a break? Well you would just go and talk to your friend, why would you ignore eachother? Why would you not go and talk with your friend? Why? There’s no good reason to it? It’s your friend, what’s wrong with spending time with your friend at school?

That’s the problem with the story, why would 2 good friends not interact with eachother at school? <<less

I read this since the premise interested me, and the 4/5 rating seemed passable, but it's really not good, so I dropped in chapter 4, which is close to the halfway mark of volume 1. I don't think it's completely awful, but a lot of the story/romance elements fall flat. For example, chapter 3 basically just features the two blushing/being embarrassed over using nicknames for each other, even though they are already close childhood friends who use each others' direct names.

The pace of the story is generally slow, and the... more>> premise is also filled with quite a bit of wish fulfillment, as another reviewer said. The main is a loner with no friends, female is super popular, the two are next-door neighbor childhood friends who hang out in the same room, play video games together, watch anime, etc. There haven't been any romantic moments that made my heart beat or make me feel excited, the two's interactions and conversations are very flat and uninteresting, and overall, I can't recommend this when there's so many other better romance novels out there. <<less

I am not one to say "this game gets good after 100h !", if something is good only after spending a ludicrous amount of time on it, then maybe it is not good.

But for this novel ? Please give it a chance, it really deserves it. I actually stopped reading it around half volume 1 at first, to be honest, so I can understand: the story is not bad in the beginning, but the way characters, be it main or background characters, act and react felt off: I was left... more>> thinking "Who act like that? Why do people care so much about 2 high schoolers dating, granted one being the cliché popular girl? Is fake dating really the first idea that came to your mind?!"

But I gave it a second chance, and oh boy do I not regret it! Volume 2 was kinda rough, too, especially due to one of the FMC friends, but around half/latter-half of the volume, that's where I think it really starts to become good.

I don't know what happened within the author's mind, but... It stopped being a generic story about "making sure no one knows we are fake-dating by holding hands!" and started to become a real story: the protagonists got developped, their friends stopped being random people just here to doubt their relationship and became real characters, with their story and personnalities, and the story became more centered around the blossoming of their relationship instead with serious moments amidst the comedy.

I won't say it is for everyone, especially considering the harduous task that finishing Volume 1&2 may be for some, but what started as a "3/5, not bad but lacking" story quickly became one of my favorite slice-of-life romance of the year.

It has cute, fluffy and funny moments, especially when the protagonists are together, being themselves ; but it also manages to have serious moments that flesh out the characters even more.

Don't expect heavy drama, at its core it really is nothing more than a cute, happy story about 2 lovebirds discovering love, and maybe each others, in the process. <<less

While the premise for the story seems too overthought and some plot twists were on simplified side, still overall story leaves good feeling.

Pros:

    • Main characters feel consistent and developing:
    • MMC despite being otaku has some brains and guts,
    • FMC is not usual "perfect" girl, exceeding in everything, just simply a cute girl with grounded hobbies and casual vibe
    • supporting characters get appropriate time, and feel consistent too
    • there are no s*upid unnatural comedic plot twists,
    • flow feels natural to the characters.
Cons:

    • as I said, premise is a bit shallow,
    • supporting characters lack depth and
    • overall tempo is definitely on slower side (though I personally don't mind - I thorowly enjoed "Life with my step sister") and events that usually lead to significant development in other titles here just give a little bumps to the story.
And big thanks to Yuki Kitsuneko for high quality translation. Actually a 3rd title by them.
