After being imprisoned by his mother for five years, Raymond was sent to a boarding school in the countryside as if being abandoned. He began a new school life with four dormitory roommates.

<Simon> – a quiet, blunt but kind-hearted boy.

<Hugh> – a sociable and energetic boy loved by everyone.

<George> – a mysterious boy who seems to have secrets.

And now, we need to know about <Jerome>.

***

<Jerome> had a room to himself. George said it was because there weren’t enough students, but I didn’t believe him. I instinctively disliked <Jerome> from the moment I first saw him. He was similar in height and build to me, but somehow seemed larger and stronger. His equestrian physique was slim and agile, and his hands were slightly larger than average.

Because he rode horses every day, he often wore riding clothes. With white riding pants clinging to his legs, black boots, and a loose-collared shirt, he carried a leather riding crop. I especially disliked that crop. <Jerome> would often, as a joke, lift the tip of Hugh’s chin with the leather loop attached to the end of the crop, and the sight was extremely uncomfortable.

Honestly this is a very very raw story to say the least. It is toxic to stratospheric levels. And even if you're used to reading novels where the protagonist suffers all kinds of ab*se, you may find this one very uncomfortable. If you are sensitive I don't even advise you to read it out of curiosity, believe me you may have small thoughts. And of course, if you don't tolerate r*pe even in fiction, don't even think about reading it, many people get off the first volume precisely because of... more>> that... Be very careful, if you feel it's too uncomfortable, don't continue reading. Okay, after all these warnings you may wonder what's wrong or what's behind this story.... Well, there are 12 volumes and once read they are short because the mastery of the author Baek is at another level. It is one of those bl classics, that you either love to death or hate. Personally this novel is one of those that I can call 'novel of my life' because of how much I love it. I don't even do reviews but I had to review 'bad life'.

At first it plays out like a normal novel, the main character Raymond after being confined for years at home by his mother (a famous actress) enters Bluebell school for boys like him, boys who are a nuisance in his family. There he shares a room with the gongs of the story: George, Hugh and Simon. Jerome, of course, is another but he has his own room because he is royalty.

Raymond, for some reason finds Jerome uncomfortable and it doesn't take long for them to fight, first like normal guys with fists and punches but then things get out of hand, the level of 'revenge' escalates and the violent situation becomes more and more and more.

I don't want to do too many spoilers, but the chapter titles are spoilers in themselves. You'll realize this as you finish reading them. There are many, many details that are overlooked, but if you read them again you fall into a spiral of self-awareness, as if someone shined a light on an object you had overlooked and it was a clue.

Spoiler

One of the details that comes to mind, in the first volume when Raymond mentions having a dream the day before about riding a merry-go-round.... That was what his mind interpreted with what was happening in his body. It's not really a dream, in that situation Raymond was being rap.3d by several people while he was sleeping on drugs. But as I said he was not conscious. I really got chills when I realized it. It wasn't a joke, I couldn't even sleep at the thought that something like that could go unnoticed as a dream in someone's unconscious mind because Raymond internalizes it as a dream and doesn't give it importance, only when you put the pieces of the puzzle together can you know that it wasn't JUST a dream, that it was real and it's very scary. The author knows very well how to play on the reader's mind, you feel at times as if you have the same clues as Raymond, or even less and can only observe in a fogged window.. It gives you an idea of what kind of psychopaths him r.4. pists were. And this kind of information is totally overlooked on a first reading, only when you read the chapter in detail can you see it.

[collapse]

Sometimes the reading is difficult because you feel so many emotions of the characters so intensely it's unbelievable, the gaslighting suffered by Raymond is portrayed to perfection (I had to stop reading many parts and pick them up some time later because you feel the same level of disbelief when they happen) I'll leave an example for you to understand.

Spoiler

There is a part in the first volume where the ab*sers plan a yearbook of Raymond's supposed victims and predecessors. According to the guys on the top floor they all ended up dead, in a mental institution and only one became a prosti. tu. te. The point here is that when Raymond believes all those things as certain.... A schoolmate tells him that the room had not been occupied by other people before Raymond. It was all a trap to make him anxious and they never existed. At that point, Raymond's mental stability almost broke down because 'the guys on the top floor' had played with his mind so much that he couldn't tell the difference between what was real and what was fake. It gets to the point where he suffers a breakdown and mistakes the partner who told him the truth for Jerome and strangles him....

[collapse]

There are many appealing things in the novel, but for me the characters and their growth is certainly worth mentioning. In a real situation of ab.u.s3 there are not many people who would be able to act as Raymond did, but he is not a hero I think he is more of a survivor and wanted to stay alive. Of course Raymond is not the most perfect protagonist, but he suffered a lot to get to break, but he did not give up. I'm not trying to justify it, but I can understand his behavior.

I just want to mention how grateful I am for this translation as I was really counting the days for an English translation (I only read a poor mtl). Thank you truly for taking this novel, I really appreciate it💙. <<less

So much dog blood. I love simon but he is crazy beyond saving. 😭 I hate author not ship mickey (donald) with MC.

At the first place, author never ellaborated mc's appearance, what does he looks like, he is cute? Handsome? I keep curious and just depend on caption "he is resemblance of his mother, his mother the most beautiful.", ok, author too lazy too explain mc's appearance and giving a hint that, MC have the most beautiful face just like his mom.

I can tell that MC have a mental problem after being tortured and ab*sed to the state that stokholm syndrome. There 2 ml, ML 1 and ML 2, but MC HE with ML 1, ML 1 killed ML 2, they are love rivals at the end. Both ml's the first one r*pe MC together and ab*sed tortured MC, kidnapped him, let him gang r*ped dozens time, and they also become a love rival at the end.
[collapse]

Here timeline age of MC being gang-r*ped

MC was put in the dormitory together with 4 rapists (include ML 1 and ML 2) . This 4 rapists gang-r*ped MC every night start from the first night MC admitted into dormitory while he asleep and they drug MC make him unable awake till morning. Too many ab*sed and tortured, not only that ML 1 whipped MC till bloody hell. 4 rapists also drag MC to be gang-r*ped by others juniors and dorminotories teacher for several times. After that, MC set up a fire to whole dorminotary where he living with rapists and killed one of the rapists, he escaped.

He being detained on the bed and gang-r*ped for a months, at the same time simon (ML 2) taken cared of him and treated well everytime after gang-r*ped session end everyday. 3 rapists did that to MC just for punishment because ran away and tried to killed them 5 years ago. And that time ml1 ml2 started obsessed toward MC. At the end, MC killed one of 3 rapists, jerome (ml1) silently freed him go.

MC captured and detained by his one-night-stand man, that man was some one (ml1) sleep too perhaps jelous that man sleep with MC, also simon beat up that man into pulp, cut off his fingter and distord his face, that man captured MC to take revenge for (ml1) but he scared of ml1 so he lash on his anger to MC, also get r*ped. I hate he happy ending with his rapist, not only rapist but the rapist also drag MC to be gang r*ped for dozens time and this is ML most sh*t and s*umbag that I found not get any redemenation at all, totally shit. I don't know what author think, but I love all non-con in this story, but I hate HE this story, I hope MC go for mickey/donald because he is good unlike jerome (ML 1), there are a hint mickey (donald) have a platonic love for MC. Y'all, I absolutely love this.... it's so beautiful, very dark and depressing at times. Honestly one of my favorite Korean novels. So glad it's being translated ❤️ WARNING- THIS STORY IS HELLA TOXIC, WORDS CANNOT EVEN PHATOM HOW DISTURBED AND TWISTED PARTS OF THIS STORY MADE ME FEEL!!! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I love reading dark romances or twisted stories in general, but this one was unbelievable. I'm not even gonna lie, reading this story gave me nightmares 2 days straight, y'all are never gonna find me in... more>> a boarding school. There were several times where I had to quit because of how disgusted and shocked I was feeling. But I never could fully drop the story because of how addicting it is. I ended up finishing all 40 chapters in 4 days, "Bad Life" left me unable to sleep!!! I really adore the main character though, Raymond is such a sweet heart even though some of his decisions were flawed, in the end all I wanted was the best for him.

This novel had me crying, running around my house, and cussing characters. It invoked all types of emotions that I never thought I could have. The character development is strong but I hold some pretty serious grudges, so I could not bring myself to forgive some certain actions that took place in this series. All I can say is, if I ever meet anyone named- Jerome, Hugh, George, or Simon... I'll just run in the opposite direction. <<less

Okay so I caught up w chapter 2. And I'm reading these reviews and spoilers wow and I have to reiterate each comment emphasized how much of a masterpiece, dark thriller well written it was!

Girl I fear this is literally every other "BL" like well written plot where? It is literally JUST r*pe so where is this masterpiece ppl speak off?

It's like a incessant trend with yaoi r*pe + Stockholm syndrome

Anyone who calls this well written and a masterpiece of thriller I deadpan at you like be so for... more>> real you can't be SERIOUS with that statement?

I take it you only read this specific type of "thriller".

My feelings while reading this novel... surely the author knew to bring out the mood of anxious goosebumps suspense but it was very predictable. The plot is all the same, even the moment I knew of Jerome I knew damn well Raymond will end up with him and seeing these spoilers I'm right. Nonetheless there was only one part I enjoyed and that was Simon s betrayal at the beginning.

I'm well aware this is a novel brooding off of fiction but the fact that Raymond submitted to Stockholm Syndorme and how he was gangr*ped not only by the roommates but so much other groups of people over a dozen times and STILL AFTER ALLLLLL that ended up w Jerome. Top peak unrealistic sh*t ever. I'm going to act like this novel was a fanfiction and the actual ending is that either Raymond committed su*cide before the sick of it all or Raymond killed every single sick bastard and is living a life of peace and normalcy after a period of recovery.

This it guys the true ending I pen down here for everyone to see. Raymond killed everyone and is living a peaceful life. Kudos to my boy for real. <<less

Bad Life has been a rollercoaster ride for me, and I want to write a review about my take on this masterpiece. I'll also take the chance with this review to correct some misinformation the previous readers left in their reviews.

Plot-wise, Bad Life is definitely a 10/10. The story is not all about smut, despite it taking up a huge chunk of the narrative. The smut in this story, at least in my opinion, not only serves to arouse but also as an accessory to the plot. It actually leaves... more>> some traces of the overarching theme of the story while giving the most important characters depth in terms of characterization. Most readers will only realize this truth as they progress deep into the story, but actually the tidbits are already spoonfed right off the bat; the author was just too cunning at leaving traps, so we readers can't help but be misguided.

Spoiler

the trap starts at that mf-ing synopsis 😀

[collapse]

Character-wise, the story is also 10/10!!! Everyone named in this story is part of the story; no one is there just to fill the spot. What I truly love the most is the fact that each and every character mentioned in the story, regardless if they're good or evil, right or wrong, a friend or an enemy, is part of the chain that makes up the verse, and a mix-match of them suffocates the MC, not only the bad guys as often portrayed in a lot of fiction stories with psychological themes. This made the story unique, imo.

Truly hurt people suffer not only from the bad guys; they also suffer from the good guys, the good guys turned bad, and those people who are ignorant and/or totally indifferent, whether they may be acquaintances or just some random passers-by. This story perfectly portrays that fact in a lot of different ways.

One way the author portrays this fact, and the best way, in my opinion, is through the MC's musings. Not only were the MC's sufferings shown in his musings, but there were also his learnings from such sufferings.

It's very easy to tell that the MC was growing as a character as the plot thickened, so his feelings were all the more human.

The main leads, Jerome and Simon, are also unique in their portrayal of a black flag that is broken inside. Their background story, even amongst my countless readings, is one of a kind. Idk if I'm just unaware; their characters may have already been portrayed that way many times before, and they might just be recycled from some black flags in different fiction stories, but at least for me, that's not the case. Sure, their means of imposing violence are just the same with the typical fiction stories out there like r/pe in all its forms, physical and emotional ab*se, etc., but their story, their pain, is the first of its kind for me. Some would argue that understanding why a character is doing evil is nothing more than justifying their actions, that empathizing with them makes one also a devil because one can't possibly empathize with a devil if they are of a good heart. I would agree on this opinion if the motivation of that devil is just not it, if it's lacking. But the motivation of Jerome and Simon perfectly explains their actions.
Spoiler

Raymond is raised as a dog, Jerome, on the other hand, is raised as a golden stallion. Simon? Simon is raised to be less than that of an extra. This hits harder when you realized that he is an actor, and what price he has to pay to leave his job for Raymond to "settle down."

[collapse]

I also want to talk about the villains, the minor characters, the side characters, and the extras, but it would take too much of your time reading this review.

They also have their own story to tell, let's leave it at that.

Now, let's address the misinformation in the other reviews.

Spoiler

Raymond has no supposed victims; he was not framed as an ab*ser by the boys. I think this is just an honest mistake in the reviewer's part.

The yearbook that mentioned Raymond's predecessors (previous victims of ab/se by his ab*sers) is fake, yes, and it is only a trap to make him more anxious and mess with his mind, but he indeed has predecessors. The ab*sers most likely do not include Jerome and Simon—only Hugh and George ab*sed his predecessors among the four boys (there is a possibility that they are included, but the novel did not mention anything about it, so the default assumption is they are not). This claim is supported by some information surrounding Jerome and Simon, but this will be too much spoiler already, so I will not explain. The reason why his predecessors didn't have any real record in the school is because the ab*se happened outside of it, and the time, based on context is before hugh enters the school to lie low. They are not students there to begin with, so of course when Raymond asked a schoolmate about the students who lived in his dorm that transferred out for some reason, the schoolmate answered there's none.

The yearbook scheme is not planned by the four boys; only George, possibly along with Hugh, planned that

[collapse]

Spoiler

only Simon r/ped Raymond the first night. Jerome only r/ped him (alone or together with Simon) after he became interested with him. They told Raymond they were his first and second man sometime later. I'm not sure the details of the nights after that becoz the author didn't really put too much detail on it, but based on Hugh and George's character, they r/ped Raymond, yes, but possibly not every night and not until Jerome already r/ped Raymond. Simon, on the other hand, possibly did it every night.

All four boys indeed dragged Raymond to be r/ped by the juniors, but initially, only Hugh and George planned to do that. Also, it's only one time not several times.

[collapse]

Spoiler

a time skip after, the three boys, George, Jerome, and Simon (Hugh is dead killed by Raymond) indeed captured Raymond again and detained him to be gang r/ped, but it's not becoz they all want to punish him for attempting to kill them before. Each one of the three boys had their own agenda for doing that.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Raymond didn't develop stockholm syndrome right after his experiences in the club. It started even before that, the exact time is just unknown. There were already traces of it right after the first time skip, his realization, however, happened some time later.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Raymond had an amnesia, but only for one month. After that, he already remembered everything. He chose to stay with Simon for approximately 2 years. Whether Raymond was drugged or not in that two years remains vague, because every time he was drugged, it was always foreshadowed. The readers can identify that foreshadowing. The foreshadowing, indeed appeared (if I'm not mistaken), so he might have been drugged, but there is also a possibility that he was not (or maybe he was, but he was not drugged like for the whole two years), because there was a time he awoken while Simon was doing him. The drug functions as sleeping pills (and also most likely to numb the butt, but definitely not to mess with the mind as one reviewer has claimed), so Raymond being awoken during the deed contradicts the function of the drug. We may attribute his waking up to the drug losing some of its efficacy, because it has already been used against Raymond a lot of times, but it is also possible that Simon was not drugging Raymond anymore, because Raymond already decided to stay with him.

Some time later, Raymond also brought Jerome to live with them. Jerome will leave after not because he wanted to take revenge toward his family, because his revenge was already underway and was coming into fruition in that two whole years. Rather than that reason, I believe Jerome left because Raymond was living in a defeatist way, and it was a betrayal in the pact/bond they had wordlessly formed, the unwritten rules of their much younger self. Jerome himself said that if Raymond wants to live like a dog, then he will make him live like that. It was also possible Jerome left because he was jealous (I'm not joking and being delusional), there are a few evidence for that, but I will not spoil it.

Matt, the man with the mutilated fingers, kidnapped detained, and r/ped Raymond some time after, for a month if I'm not mistaken, not becoz he wanted revenge for Jerome or himself, but becoz he wanted someone to accompany him, to want him. Some time in that one month of detainment, Matt made Raymond guessed which between revenge and money (Raymond was going to inherit a huge amount wealth) was the reason why he was abusing him. Raymond believed it's none of the two for good reasons. If it's revenge, what Matt was doing to Raymond at that time was too light if you would take into consideration his mutilated hand. If it's money, Matt was clearly not doing anything to steal his money. The only reason why Matt detained Raymond was to have someone that accompanies him, because he was too lonely. When Raymond didn't show any signs of leaving himself, Matt even left the door open and allowed Raymond to occasionaly step out their home.

[collapse]

There is a review that claimed Jerome and others were doing all the crimes they were doing because of their rank, money, and power. It is a misinformation because their motivations were deeper than that. I'm not gonna spoil, but there was a deeper reason for that. Their drive was indeed selfish, but it was also complex and at the same time personal. <<less

this is the type of novel which is unfortunate if you havent read as its the same if you read. And I deeply felt that while reading. Everything, literally everything without exaggrating gives you goosebumbs. Your eyes wide opened, in the beginnings, you are like "is this really happening?" until you have faced multiple similar of them over and over which makes you in the end a nonchalant type of reader. Its not for everyone, but to those who finds it like treasure to themselves, this is the best work... more>> given and established. It felt not like a bl, much more than that, which breaks the bounds upon that label. The most repeated word I had was crazy btw nxnxnx. I loved the boys on the top floor as well as raymond. By considering only their personalites of course. I love hugh the most amount, my type my type! Anyway, if you already researched the novel, I can say this means its for you. Go read it! But pay attention to go crazy or to be traumatisied or something like ominous feelings lol! I bet you will love! <<less

Ok so first off, do I like this novel? Yes. Is everybody going to like this novel? Absolutely not. Read the tags. If some of them make you squeamish, don't even read it, you'll probably hate the story. Most of the characters are yandere characters. This means they are fundamentally bad people. They hurt the main character very badly. They hurt the people around the main character VERY badly. They know what they are doing is wrong because they are smart enough to hide it, and to act like socially... more>> normal people in public. They do whatever want because they are selfish and they have the societal (rank, money, etc) power to do it.

Why should you read it then? They are very well written yandere characters. I wish more authors knew how to write characters like this. If you like dark, mature themes, this is your novel. The main character is not a pushover, but neither are the antagonists. There's some tit-for-tat maneuvering, but the MC is out numbered. I find that I do have a favorite villain that for some reason I am rooting for? (Giving me an awkward sense of guilt because come on, they are really terrible people!!) But if I objectively am cheering for the protagonist's safety, they really all need to die or go to prison or something.

And for the translator (s), it's super appreciated this was picked up again! The translation is great, kudos! <<less

This novel is a masterpiece, its very well-written I can't even let this novel sleep after picking it up for a few days. It's different from all the BL novels I've read. Warnings: Read at your own risk.

The writing style and storytelling is unique and fascinating. This might not be a cup of tea for some people due to heavy disgusting and graphical depictions, but it'll get you hooked if you are into this kind of story. Plus, the MC is not the typical protagonist you'll read in every BL,... more>> he's built different.

Painful, shocking, traumatizing, yet suprisingly interesting. It made me feel included that even I can almost share the pain and sufferings the MC went through (which is tough I shed real tears). The manhwa adaptation might have toned things down so if you are really interested, I'd suggest you read this novel. It's a must, a highly recommended one!

The novel is not romanticizing neither glorifying such gruesome and terrifying experiences that the MC had gone through, but the novel has an impeccable way of showing us the unyielding spirit of the MC to seek revenge and justice. You'll definitely get to question your own morals while reading this, and it's gonna be one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

There will be sides after the main story so I recommend you to read the main story till the end. <<less

This novel is something utterly insane and unique and it will utterly captivate you. The things that occur in this novel are ruthless, shocking, and disgusting, and yet you'll find yourself reading chapter, after chapter, after chapter.

Most people will not be able to handle this book, as it contains heavy r*pe and ab*se. But for those who can stomach it, this is a masterpiece. When I clicked on this novel, all I knew is that it was about a school boy being ab*sed by his roommates, but it is SO... more>> much more than that. So much deeper. So much sadder. I absolutely recommend this novel for those who can get past the many events in this story.

Don't expect anything from this novel other than shock anticipation because that's what I felt through this entire book. <<less

It’s dark but really good and gets you hooked. The author is great at writing and storytelling— that even someone like me, who’s never been into dark stuff like this, has to admit I really loved reading this. Caution that this novel contains a lot of uncomfortable scenes (see the novel tags) but note that it’s not romanticized. The trauma is laid out as is. It’s a really dark story. While reading it, I felt so much anger and frustration, I had to remind myself that it was just fiction. Some arcs were really hard to read and digest what was happening. What I really liked was, the mc’s character, he was really strong willed and brave, and not weak and naive. Even though some of his decisions were questionable but I could understand why he did what he did. I wish the MC killed all the characters, went to therapy and lived... more>> a good life.
