The Mysterious Art Museum

Perhaps the paintings in a museum are subjected to more nonsense than you would hear anywhere else in the world.

The language that comes out of an artist’s life is the painting itself. It contains the most ordinary lives that know failure, desire, recoiling in fear, and compromise.

Learning is about understanding that language. We miss much of what the paintings speak because there is no way to ask the long-dead painters about the philosophy of their lives.

In an alleyway in the residential area of Jongno, there’s a peculiar art gallery. This place enables us to transcend such limitations. By sheer coincidence, I ended up visiting that place and began living an entirely different life.

Pretty good rag to riches story of an aspiring artist. The artist finds success early in the story, so the focus is more on the journey of the MC through his art and the art of predecessors whose life he can share in the fantastical museum. The feeling of struggle fades quite fast, making for a tranquil slice of life story.

This is just the early part of the novel, so things might change story-wise (I think), but it currently has the main elements I'm looking for. 1) It makes me... more>> want to see the artworks mentionned, I googled a lot of the painters and paintings, also I realy want to go to a museum now, 2) it makes me feel like creating something, be it drawing or something else, which is why I realy like artists stories. Best story doesn't make you feel like a consumer but something more, and this novel succeeds in that. 3) MC is nice to read about and follow, sufficiently developed as a character 4) No drama, the drama is in the past and this is the story of earning a great life.

Also, translation is good, especially for such a technical story with many description about art.

Still, I think up till now no other characters than the MC have had focus, so the story might feel lacking as chapters accumulate and this remain the case. Also, I'm not sure about a lot of views on art when it comes to what the MC is actually producing. But this last concern is a minor one. <<less

although I liked the story enough to go and read so much of it, it's just a supreme shame that the only version of this story that we have is MTL'd.

Story wise this story is tethering between a 3-4/5 for me, as I feel pulled in to the world, but I find myself equally pulled out too often due to the shenanigans of the author trying to stubbornly shove more elements into the MC when it either should have been done naturally as the author kept writing on, or should... more>> have revised the story to be a tad bit more tragic or intense to have a good reason to push for a unique character growth arc.

But neither the author would have chosen bc this sort of MC has no real room for meaningful (at least after the beginning arcs) change.

I see endless opportunities, but it's lost to the author because I felt that the author was lost too. <<less

Ok so I caught up to the latest translated chapter for this and I can give my review that is spoiler free now while waiting for the last 10 chapters of the series. (As of making this review)

PLOT

Personally, I think its interesting as even though I'm not an art kind of guy it kind of makes you appreciate the thoughts of the creation behind art. It's realistic to see how you can see two sides of the spectrum and development over time. Though there are a lot of... more>> time skips, it kind of makes sense with how the theme is literally a painter making paintings. I would rate this part a 5/5

CHARACTERS

For the characters, MC is kind of bleak and mid. In all honesty and in my opinion, I don't see this at all in his personality or maybe we are yet to see this. I can say for certain though, as an artist is where all his development went. The other characters were well thought of and honestly had more development even if its sudden in their personality than the MC but I guess some things never change. I would rate this part a 4/5

STORY BUILDING

Story building gave off classic slice of life vibes. It's something that you don't want to end when it's eventually gonna come. It's relaxing, the drama, the theatrics, all play well into it. Author did a great job. 5/5

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this story. Definitely a huge curveball to what I read as I've never ventured into this area before since all my slice of life are just either school kids or fantasy styled isekai. I would have liked some romance but maybe it's still coming. I honestly don't know but care enough to want it to happen sometime soon.

I would score this a 4.8/5 and 10/10 would recommend to read if you're into it or want to try something new for change

Just remember, it's all in my opinion. You still have your own place to review this and enjoy it or not as how you see fit o7 <<less

While it could be a very interesting story about a struggling painter achieving fame and making his dreams come true I just couldn’t enjoy MC personality. Though it is just my own opinion.

It started as a very good and informative story, I liked reading the art history mentioned. Also it was nice that MC was not immediately arrogant just because he stumbled upon a good opportunity but the fact that he is portrayed as overly insecure due to how poor his family was while growing up and he comes across... more>> as someone very uncool made me unable to enjoy the story.

And what made me eventually give up reading was that I couldn’t see how such a below average guy with a not so good personality (even he describes himself as a slightly selfish and self absorbed person) living in a very lacklustre way is supposed to be a genius painter. He just couldn’t give me that feeling...

The mistakes he keeps making in his daily interactions like
Spoiler

again and again not answering his phone or hanging up on a prospective client after mistaking them for telemarketers or signing contracts without even reading them and a lot more

[collapse]
while making him more real also keeps me from liking the MC.

Still it has a good story and might be enjoyable read for those that like this kind of MC... <<less

Definitely underrated, not sure why it's only at 4.0. I suppose the ending might have been disappointing for some, but I still immensely enjoyed the story.

I liked that this wasn't another story where the MC relies on his cheat to plagiarize his way to riches (don't get put off by the beginning). The story gets better after he travels to Italy.

The translation is good, ignore other complaints about it. Highly recommended.
