I Gave Up on Conquering the Heroines

Description

For unknown reasons, I found myself in a game and am on my 12th attempt at clearing it.

It appears impossible to achieve the “conquer all heroines” ending.

The moment I decided to give up on conquering the heroines and aim for the “defeat the final boss” ending instead:

[The monsters in the dungeon are strengthened by Saintess Jill’s blessing.] [The monsters in the dungeon gain weak toxicity due to Witch Yulia’s curse.] [Cold air envelops the dungeon because of Frost Lord Yerina’s grudge.]

The heroines started blocking my path forward.

Definitely not my type of novel, in summary the MC is a s*um that only cares about himself and returning back to earth, but because of his repeated attempts, ... more>>
Spoiler

over and over, and silently cursing the heroines thinking they wouldn't remember, he repeats this 12 times before choosing a different route and gets blocked by the same heroines he cursed, the pace is a bit of a mess, I lost track of the time on how fast he even cleared his first run

Not my type of tea, I probably won't even continue reading it since I don't like his personality, in my opinion if you want to leave, just do it sincerely and normally, you don't have to do exaggerated scummy shit, try reading it if you're interested though. <<less

For anyone uncomfortable with other reviews claiming the MC is a Bastard, the story is very subtly hinting that he's unconsciously kind.

The heroines are all distinctive personalities and we get character growth as the MC gets stronger partially from effort and a cheat skill that requires a condition to be met

So far has been a enjoyable read with various settings and the Yandere element is slowly building to a big explosion

... more>> Lastly, while the saintess at first may seem unlikable, she gets... her own development in a different sense

I would reccomend this series if your prepared to get angry and satisfied from karma. Although the romance is a bit lacking because the MC only wants to escape but it adds a different element from most Korean Stories with yanderes <<less

This is a pretty good story. It seems a little off at first or like it's going to be some lame comedy-first type deal, but stick with it. There's something here. I'm not fully confident yet since I'm only at chapter seventeen but this story has a bit of a mind to it, I think. It's already had moments where you see glimpses of intelligence behind it and is self-aware but not in that annoying way where everything is played for laughs. You'll see what I mean the further you... more>> go into it. Pretty interesting. <<less

Novel with maybe... Good potential I guess? But it's certainly about... Not the most likable MC imo. Reasons? Well, it's very easy to say them in spoilers

Spoiler

Game in which protagonist will transmigrate, have 3 heroines which he MUST romance/get 95% affection. This needed in order to return, to his previous world. MC seriously tried to romance all 3 girls in first try...

What happened? When he was bodyguard of first girl, he met 2nd girl. First girl caught him red handed and then he met 3rd girl. And overally.... MC didn't felt any guilt at all. Well, at start of 2nd try he said that he will close his heart. But I guess it'll only make everything worser, considering that girls seems to remember slightly, what he did in first run. I guess that's the reason why they all, trying to stop MC from clearing the game.

Harem is bad? Certainly, but in case of MC, everything is much worser. Because he will leave the world, where heroines will be in love with him. Leaving them alone

I have a full review elsewhere but here's a short part addressing a bunch of the concerns-

1- the MC is not some random s*um who treats the heroines as objects. If you pay attention to his actions and not his words, it turns out he does actually care a lot. The whole reason he wants to treat them as tools and says harsh words is because he doesnt want to one- break his own mentality and two- become so attached that he is unable to go back to earth resulting... more>> in heartbreak. He's just tsundere.

2- The novel is primarily about these character interactions and relationships. relatively small and satisfying story arcs lead up to the entire story progression. The power and combat exists but isnt the main focus, he uses his ingenuity and tools to beat enemies... till some point randomly the author decides to change that drastically.

I think the author did not realize he had gold in his hands with how well the MC is written. putting in a nonsensical twist that changes all that he has built up till that point. Changing the focus to combat randomly as if trying to make a martial arts novel. It makes the novel go from a solid 9 to maybe a 7 or 8 at best.

Give it a try for the characters. the heroines all have their own backstory for being so paranoid. <<less

I wanted to give this novel a 3-star rating but didn't want to drag down the ratings by that much.

First of all, from what I can see, the premise is just a lie. I've read up to the latest chapter, and there are absolutely no signs that the main heroines are going to join the side of the enemy. The author did set up the background reason for such a thing happening in the earlier chapters, but it seems like they abandoned it or something...? In favor of a generic... more>> harem route. Of course, I could also be wrong, and it could just be a massive setup for something that will only happen hundreds of chapters later. In which case, the problem then becomes the author writing something that's only going to happen in the mid-late stages of the novel as a premise.

One thing I disliked while reading the novel was the sheer overuse of the damsel in distress trope. Every woman the protagonist meets just seems to instantly become a bumbling fool the moment they encounter him, even outside of the scripted main heroines.

I also felt like there were some... unnecessary details that made me feel like the author was just making an excuse to write about their fetishes. For example, the rabbit beastman repeatedly climaxing because the protagonist touched her after removing her libido-suppression device. It was strange to read, to say the least. There's also the blood ghoul that has her physical age suppressed to be permanently 13, who seems to be getting set up as a romantic interest. Again, strange to say the least.

In terms of plot, it seems to meet the basic requirements to be decent, which is good. The author doesn't seem too experienced in writing action scenes, so tension is usually created by scenarios that can't be solved by just power.

Pacing is alright, with the exception of the previously mentioned romance. The emotional building stage is just skipped entirely, with the exception of the people the author has slightly more time to flesh out (his adventuring companions).

The protagonist is slightly strange. It feels like the author couldn't decide on whether they wanted to make him an unfeeling regressor or an average kind-hearted man. As a whole, it would probably be more correct to say he leans more on the side of good, but it's kind of ambiguous.

Overall, I think "I Gave Up on Conquering the Heroines" is not a series I would recommend. Between the uncomfortable scenes, rushed emotional progression, and average action scenes, this novel doesn't particularly stand out to me. However, it's definitely still readable if you don't mind these flaws. At the very least, I didn't hate it while reading it, which is why I refrained from giving it a 3-star rating. <<less

got interested by the synopsis but got disappointed MC is typical harem MC. I thought the MC someone who rational bc of the title and synopsis. But nope that's never happen. Here what I dissatisfied with the novel

1) yes he not with the heroin anymore but he got new side chick like the artisan dwarf, the countess, the s*ave and the sister of heroin u can tell where the direction go

2) why in harem all the author make 1 dimensional female? Like are u that delusional that make FLs like... more>> that with no life just thinking about ML

3) unnecessary eroge scene like if u hv decent MC with some common sense u will not touch ur ex sister sensitive ear, what for? Aren't u said u feed up with all crazyness in the game but why playing new fire the author and MC is inconsistent delusional pe*vert

4) woman s*ave + MC is big red flag

5) forced relationship like MC and the heroin sister is annoying, I can pardon all inconsistent with MC character but when this ark come it is really doesn't make sense make me wonder and realize that I read wrong novel.

don't be fooled by the name and the synopsis and country come from

bc really this generic japanese harem novel just with some affirmation and explanation why MC is a jerk and why he got many brain dead and crazy women

the good news is the MC know all heroins crazy and what to get away from it but the but news is MC is a jerk

my expectations is when reading this was the MC get solution abt all his problem not make new problem by collecting side chick and the plot with heroin sister is unforgivable and broke the novel purpose

i thought when MC make friend with the goblin I thought oh yes the solution is coming and then he there plot where the heroin and MC make amend and together facing the final boss after twist and turn

but after seeing last 3 chapter I read nah not gonna happen. Dropped not my cup of tea. If u like harem see it but if u like see deep character with slightly angast story and char growth this not fo u. <<less

While I do understand why people hate the MC's attitude (I felt the same at first), I think his behaviour is not entirely abnormal...

The guy reincarnated into a game he wrote every single line of dialogue of. While he has almost no clue about the RPG aspect of the game, he knows better than anyone else the "dating sim" part of it. When suddenly he is sent there and asked to either defeat the final boss or conquer the three heroines, it's obvious he will try his best to get... more>> back to his original world as soon as possible by conquering the heroines with a perfect "playthrough". And, normally he should have been able to do so easily, but it turns out his knowledge is not enough because, during the process of turning the game into a real world, every plot hole has been filled with content he doesn't know about, which makes the already difficult "conquest" even more difficult (basically impossible).

Also, the "real" heroines are not as likeable as their game counterpart, not only because of the changes but also because, while you might like a possessive character, you won't necessary like a possessive girlfriend (especially since not being found out cheating is necessary for you to return to your world). This helps him avoid getting too emotionally involved.

And there's also the fact that, until he decides to confess to one of the heroines (and thus, conclude the current playthrough), he can't know their affection level. This would make anyone go crazy since you'll go back to the starting point time after time if the affection level is not high enough when you finally confess.

Spoiler

Anyway, it turns out the MC is actually deceiving himself in order to fulfill his mission. It's especially true with Undecided; he tries to act like an as$hole and treat her like an object, but when (following his orders) she actually treats herself as disposable, he instantly becomes desperate.

[collapse]

Still, let's be honest, the MC is indeed a bit tr*shy in the way he uses people and doesn't care about their feelings to a certain extent (you could even say he is a bit of a "r@cist", since he mostly doesn't care about the feelings of the rabbit beastkin, the bug curse user, and other "non-human" characters).

Anyway, the story is not that bad but still far from being perfect.

And if there is something I really didn't like about it it's the second part.

Spoiler

The author used one of the worst combo for me: MC disappears > people think he's dead > time skip > return. Basically, the author skipped through the whole process of making the heroines change and accept the harem situation. Since the guy was dead, they learned to work together to share their pain and achieve what he couldn't do. And then, they are too happy to see him back to actually try and make him unhappy again.

Also, at this point, any girl who is in love with the MC more or less adds herself to the harem naturally, without any real development.

Basically, it feels rushed. The author had the decency to end the story, but it seems to me that he/she backed himself/herself into a corner and just wanted to end it as soon as possible, forcing every development he/she had in mind into a few chapters.

[collapse]

In conclusion, I liked it enough (Undecided is very funny), but I don't particularly recommend choosing this one if you have to choose only one series to read. <<less

Basically just really nice.

MC at the starting runs was scummy because he was still detached from the world treating it like a game. Obviously, all his actions towards the heroines were faked and done for nothing more than manipulation, but as they say, hypocrisy done long enough turns into virtue. His fake feelings turned into truth.

Spoiler

Each consecutive round he fell even more for the heroines. So each round, h hardened his heart and he decided to try and kill his emotions knowing he can't stay in the world anyway no matter what he does and loving the heroines will just hurt everyone even more in the end and he was emotionally bankrupt because the heroines are just... Yeah. So he decided to take the 2nd choice which is defeat the big baddy. Reminder: the game was ass. It was a tr*sh game with trophy heroines to attract weebs and the head dept. thought making the final boss s*upid broken because "people these days like the challenge" was a good idea AND on a time limit. All his previous rounds lasted a year. But if he wants to kill the boss, he needs to do so within 2 years or else the 4 heavenly kings will be too strong and Draken will descend so he is basically trying to speedrun. He's basically just a good person who is pragmatic and does morally grey decisions at times. Nothing too complicated. But obviously this wouldn't be so interesting if there were no plot twist so: yeah basically heroines got their memories of previous rounds and he found out.

[collapse]

It's actually a nicely written novel. MC is pretty dumb for the late realisations.. but all in all interesting for what I thought was nothing more than gooner novel.

edit:

sh*t got real wack. Like, reaaaaal wack. It's rushed. Fuuuuuuuck

This went to a 3.7 from a 4.3 to me.

starts as an a**hole-ish attempt to speedrun a dating sim and get back home. After building up some interesting drama with the 3 heroines, it shifts to a more generic OP MC harem builder where every important character he meets is an attractive woman that falls in love with him and but he has to actively avoid the 3 heroines.

[collapse]

relatively early spoiler about heroines:

Spoiler

they each get their memories back for some reason but conveniently each from a different loop where the MC "chose" them. End result is just 3 yanderes looking for him because from their pov they jjst regressed and their lover disappeaed.

[collapse]

feels like wasted premise. You can find harem adventure anywhere but I expected more character interactions between the MC and heroines. Still a decent read as the heroines still manage to spice up an otherwise generic adventure. <<less

01) What the story is about?

MC into game character where he needs to either:

A) Kill the final boss

... more>> B) Conquer the 3 heroines at the same time (reach 95% affection)

However, he can't reach 100% with any of them first or he will be forced to re-start. While having 0 talent to fighting/magic beside broken class he has subpar stats. So he try for 12 years to the harem route, which he fails.

The story claim that because the 3 are "too paranoid". But in fact is because they are the obsessed yandere type that will use their power keep him, in fact one of them will false accuse him of trying to r*pe her so the police is set to arrest him and is implied that the other 2 aren't too far in the possessiveness.

System glitch and he has just 1 last run, which he decide to try to kill the last boss is easier. From there is a relative common "fantasy with knowledge of the future/game strat" story, if anything the MC is slight more interesting as he know relative little of how the RPG part of the game was done, so he has most the story side and his own experience to guide him. In this last run he also become friend with lesser heroines that are more likable and with better interactions. However he need to do while avoiding even crossing the line of sight of any of the 3 heroines, as if one fall for him he will not have another try.

02) Why 3 stars

The story is above average when it come to "fantasy with knowledge of the future/game strat", the plot of the mini-arcs are interesting. The MC interacting with a "f*ck it" personality without being passive all the time is nice, while some of the lesser heroines and their interaction with MC are entertaining enough, that I wouldn't mind give a 4 star.

Maybe 3.5, if I consider how messy the whole fighting/power system is for most of the story, however this part is most irrelevant and done for comedic reasons, but as the chapter move forward the importance seen to increase what make need a more forgiving mindset in how they handle it, specially with the fighting/magic talent of the MC compared to everyone else it does get tiring when it also doesn't reflect the reality.

The main heroines that should be the main selling point are just terrible, during the whole story he is working around their many redflags and presented as irrational obsessive and while they have interesting backstory they are just drowned by how they are portraited. That I guess if you like yandere girls might be your thing.

Setting in a way that the MC need to avoid them because the risk of triggering one of the 1 girl conquest route, while they get more and more unhinge is just tiring. <<less

Though I have only read seven chapters, the story has succeeded in hooking me. I am interested in how it ends.

Yoo-jin is a visual novel writer for a gaming company. The company is trying to make a new game as a last ditch effort not to go bankrupt. The game combines realistic combat with visual novel elements. His role is to make three main heroines for romancing. The player character can choose who to romance while clearing the game. While each individual romance route is easy, the harem route is... more>> brutally hard. The lack of servers combined with brutal gameplay and paranoid heroines has the company failing to meet expected sales and go bankrupt.

Through some twist of fate, Yoo-jin is s**ked into the game. The only way out of the game is either completing the harem route with high affections from all heroines, or defeating the final boss while clearing the game. If Yoo-jin clears the game without clearing one of two conditions, he restarts at the beginning. The safe route Yoo-jin uses is to romance a single heroine.

The story can still go downhill from here, but I want to see more before I change my score. <<less
