Long ago, during an era when divine beasts mingled with humans and lived on Earth, a child bearing the blood of these divine beings, known as a “Shinin,” was born from the union between humans and divine beasts. The Shinin possessed miraculous powers, but the price of having such forbidden strength was high. The divine beast blood coursing through their veins induced madness.

To counter this, the divine beasts joined forces to create beings with a calming scent, known as “Hyangin,” who could stabilize the Shinin. Only the Hyangin, whose scent matched the divine beast blood, could soothe the raging blood within the Shinin.

In one such Hyangin village of the Honghwa tribe, there lived a young male Hyangin named Dan Yuha, who was discriminated against and scorned due to his parents’ crimes.

Despite this, Yuha grew resiliently into an excellent perfumer and pharmacist, thanks to the Third Prince of the Empire, Shin Ryuwon, who had saved him as a child. With a heart full of gratitude, Yuha worked hard, hoping to one day repay Ryuwon.

That day finally arrived when Ryuwon, suffering from the increasingly potent divine beast blood, came to the Honghwa village to recuperate. Yuha sought to use his talents to assist the prince. However, an incident occurred where another Hyangin sneaked into Ryuwon’s chamber to seduce him, causing Ryuwon’s divine beast blood to go berserk. In his ensuing madness, Ryuwon lost his reason and ended up ravishing Yuha…

This novel has so much potential. The story isn't rushed (I'm saying this based on the raws that I've read). If you need a more detailed review here it is (it might contain a bit of spoiler so please readat your own risk) :

So we have our MC Dan Yuha who is a great perfumer and has topped the state exam. But everyone in his tribe still hate him because of the sin his parents comitted. When Yuha's parents passed away he was devastated. At that time our ML aka... more>> Shin Ryuwon consoles MC and becomes his salvation. MC lives a tough life and continuously improves his skills as a perfumer as that's what Shin Ryuwon told him at that time. After years of this incident ML once again comes to MC's tribe due to his divine fever (MC is the descendant of the divine dragon) and meets MC. However an accident happened and ML ended up having S*ex with Yuha. <<less

This novel has a very weird pacing. Or maybe it's just my first time reading a book like this. Either way, I can't say I'm a fan.

I love slow burn in romance stories, in fact, I almost only like slow burn. But this is "slow burn" in literally everything. Even the writing itself is extremely slow. If you take away all the embellishements, repetitions and incredibly long ramblings, at least half the chapters would amount to a 10 second scene each, which led to 43 chapters of... nothing. That's how... more>> this novel felt to me. I could skip chapters on end without missing anything substantial. It sure felt like I was reading the same thing over and over again.

It's hard to find a good balance between narrative, dialogue and action. Usually I find webnovels lacking in the former. This one is the complete opposite; it consists mostly of narrative, the inner monologue and long repetitive exposition type.

Needless to say, people seem to enjoy it—so this is likely just a strong personal opinion. Take it with a pinch of salt. I won't risk giving an unfair low rating, so I'll leave this review here in case it's relevant to anyone. <<less

It's going good so far. I'm fascinated at the setting (reminds me ABO but with them being offsprings of gods/divinity), but the way the villagers treat the MC is aggravating me. Sins of thy father (or parents in this case) my a**.

I only gave it 5 stars to try to balance out the ratings for now. I'll give a more accurate rating as we progress through the novel!

Update: (Ch. 55) Holy sh*t this is a slow burn. The slowest burn I have ever read. Seriously starting to drive me crazy. I'm going to give it a while to get further along before I fix this review. My thoughts at the moment: don't start this until they at least get to chapter 100. Maybe something will have happened by then. It's a good book so far, the romance is just moving slower than a snail.

I will give a more complete review when I've finished the book or at... more>> least gotten further in it. This is what I've noticed so far by chapter 16.

This story is somewhat slow-paced, which usually isn't my cup of tea, but it is written and translated exceptionally well. Thank you Chrysanthemum Garden, I can always count on you all. Anyway, the main character is good at what he does (herbal remedies and making perfume and stuff), and the ab*se from the tribe has descent reasoning behind it, rather than just something that happens because people just don't like him. His parents caused a major issue by choosing to be together, which messed up the tribes political ties with the imperial government, so yeah, the tribespeople are angry. Do they take it too far? Yes, but with the leader of the tribe urging it on and people remembering the benefits they used to get (the good old days) before the parents messed it up, I can see that happening with mob mentality. So, it's not a completely out-there premise, and not everyone in the tribe treats him badly. He's not entirely alone his whole life, so it's not the "savior comes to pull the damsel in distress out of the fire" trope... so far. I foresee some of that coming, but the "damsel" seems pretty mentally strong on his own and would get himself out eventually given some time.

Anyway, the male lead doesn't seem too overpowered (OP), but he is sorta OP with corresponding drawbacks. He's not the type to take peoples crap, but he isn't a horrible tyrant either. People respect him, and with good reason. He returns kindness with kindness, reasonable scheming with tolerance, and evil (and unreasonable scheming) with evil. Mess with him and your life will end, but he's not out to be an a-hole. So far so good there. I hate when they make the tyrant freaking insane and somehow, nobody thinks that's a bad thing and his underlings believe he should totally stay in power. Like, wtf. Sorry, tangent. Anyway, while he has a temper and migraines and insomnia, he basically keeps it under wraps and acts as a good future ruler. I mean, don't try crawling into his bed to trap him in a marriage and expect to survive, but he's not a bad guy.

Overall, the setting is very ABO, but rather than gender, it's divine lineage. The ones born from humans and the divine, need someone from the people created by the divine to help offset the side effects of the divine blood. So, if you're mixed race, you're going to be OP and live a long time, but you'll be an insomniac in constant pain. The divine created a race of people (all of which, regardless of outward gender, can get pregnant) whose scent can nullify the side effects of divine blood. Find the scent that matches you and you're good. Like a fated pairing. Anyway, it's an interesting concept I don't see a lot of, and they explain it fairly well. The writing is smooth and not abrupt. They linger on things for a bit too long sometimes, but it's never to the point that makes me want to skim forward.

Like I said, it's good so far, but expect the writer to take their time. It's a long-term story that gets a lot of details in and lets things ruminate. I haven't decided if I particularly like the main character yet (hoping he grows some more back bone and character, and it looks like he might), but I am slightly partial to the male lead so far. <<less

It's really a nice read steady pacing and a unique plot. I'm not really a lover of historical genre but this caught my attention with the synopsis it's a first of it's kind for me. I would recommend to anyone looking for something fresh.

wow this is my first time writing a review but I just knew I had to do it! This story is so interesting to read about after having read a lot of stories in different genres. I would recommend this to anyone who is bored of just cliche bl stories.

The MC Dan Yuha (bottom) is insecure but very talented and skilled, while the ML Shin Ryuwon (top) is super strong and smart. Guessing from the prologue it seems to be chasing arc story? The translation is very nicely done as... more>> well because I can understand the dialogue well. <<less

4.4/5?

At first I was curious as to how the author would write this plot that could easily be a simple plot for smut (lol).

So far the story has a nice pace. You will notice this is a slowburn and the plot at the end of the summary hasn't happened yet so far (currently at c31) but the build up to that point is interesting.

The story explains about the social status of having a lot of divine blood. Those who have it are naturally much more powerful but also suffer from... more>> constant pain since it's not easy to control. Usually, the "Hyangin" with strong scents can help and soothe them, and the stronger their scent the "better" (that also gives them a high status).

But that's not the case on our ML.

He's so sensitive to scents it makes him almost sick being near Hyangin in general. And being a prince, he knows how greedy people can be and take advantage of his situation. So he's become this polite but also cautious person always seeing through people's intention, only trusting a few close confidants.

MC is your typical humble and good natured person who ended up growing into this insecure and lack of self esteem person. He's been bullied almost to death because of his tribe full of unreasonable people. But thanks to his effort and talent in perfume (and some help of the prince in the past), he's been able to survive so far.

I thought this story would roughly be the MC waiting for the prince to save him and the prince casually helping him until they fall in love. But so far neither of them are doing so lol.

MC is pretty self-reliant and he's concentrated on repaying ML with his talent. ML seems busy with his health and duties as a prince. He is mildly curious about MC but not to the point of looking for him everytime.

Translation is good and pretty constant.

Update: currently at c48.

I have to agree with the weird pacing. Feels like at least 5 chapters should be 1 whole because whenever I read it, it's like only one scene happened without any tension and it ends there. The first 30 chapters felt good as an introduction but the last few chapters feels like it should start picking up but seems like is not?

I still quite enjoy the premise but I feel like it's necessary to stack chapters before reading it so you don't feel like it's dragging. <<less

This is very interesting!

In terms of story pacing, I think it's pretty good! The characters and their backgrounds are being fleshed out, so they don't feel too flat, and the world setting (the Shinin and Hyangin) are explained well.

The chapter distribution, on the other hand, is absolutely awful, and I can see why some people complain that it's slow (especially if you're paying per chapter). I am currently in chapter 74, but with how short the chapters are, it feels like I've read only 30 chapters worth. 😅 I might continue... more>> to read this on ridi, since I want to know how the story unfolds! <<less
