The entire city of Chang’an knew that Prince Qi, Huan Xuan had a white moonlight in his heart—the current crown princess. For her, he had been unwilling to marry anyone else and even brought back a commoner woman from the border who resembled her. Everyone thought that the commoner woman was merely an inconsequential substitute, and even Huan Xuan himself believed this.

Until one day, the woman suddenly disappeared, leaving behind a sea of flames and a charred corpse. Everyone thought she was dead, but only Huan Xuan did not believe it. A piece of his heart felt as though it had been cut out. He was willing to give everything just to find those eyes that shone like stars and were as gentle as autumn water, to find his Sui Sui. He searched for her frantically, but there was no trace of her.

Until two years later, when the three military governors entered the capital and were granted titles, he finally saw her again. She sat high on her horse, calmly looking at him, as if she were looking at a stranger: “Dreams must eventually end.”

She was the general of the Great Yong army, commanding two hundred thousand elite troops, and also his prematurely deceased older brother’s betrothed. It turned out that he was the substitute. It turned out that he had never truly possessed those eyes. He gripped the edge of her blade, pressing it against his face, letting the blood flow: “Now there’s no resemblance.”

Loved it!!

I loved hating the ML... he was an ass, and I wanted to skin him alive. However, I didn't feel much sympathy for the FL because as the title states, "The substitute is actually the prince himself." And every time she makes noodles to celebrate her ex's b/day which is the same as the ML's (I believe), I feel a tiny bit sry for the ML. That's later on tho, the beginning I just wished she'd dump the noodles on his head XD.

The Leads had a lot in common.... more>> Their experiences, from the FL losing her parents, and taking up the army. The ML being neglected by his parents, his mother hating him. She looked like her cousin, he looks like his brother. They're both generals. She's basically the female version of the ML. Every chapter always left me wanting more. I liked some of the characters, but others like the antagonists were lacking in the depth dept. The dandy cousin who also fell for the FL was my fav. The crown princess's character was rly dull to me. It felt like she was just there to be the one that looked like the FL. She was indecisive and down right s*upid. I could understand why she decided not to be with the ML, but srsly if you're going to finally realize your feelings for someone at least DO NOT write it on your forehead >_>. The ML's mother was a weird character. You know that saying, "Even tigers don't eat their cubs?" This doesn't just eat hers, she devours them. The princess's cousin (forgot his name), is probably my fav antagonist. He's got this macabre feel about him, added on to that he's sick and obsessive, he makes the perfect villain. OK, almost perfect ;D

The ending wasn't as satisfying as I thot it would be, but it was the character growth and the sacrifice that the ML made that I gave this 4.5 stars. I thot he redeemed himself. No 4.5, so I'll just go with 5. <<less

I’m loving this novel. It’s the standard substitute white moonlight trope with a little twist that’s described in the title and summary. If you love historical romance novels with strong FL then you will enjoy reading this one. I know I’ve only read 12 chapters but I think it’s pretty solid right now.

Also summary is making me anticipate the ML going through a lot just to get back the FL.

PS wonderful translations! Thank you translator!

I usually write reviews after I finish a story, as I don't really like forming an opinion too early. So, take everything I say here with a grain of salt, as it's all subject to change. These are just my worries for the future, but so far I think it's a very good story.

As I've said he story is going great at the moment, nice pacing, good translation, interesting characters. But I must say, I'm worried where it'll go. Based on the description this is a crematorium story, where the... more>> ML after mistreating the MC will have to atone and win her back... The thing is that these stories often fail by making the ML too horrible, not horrible enough, or not selling you on MC's suffering and feelings. Now, as it's in the description, the MC has zero feelings for the ML. So, when he treats her like substitute she doesn't care at all, so it's hard to feel anger on her behalf. Not to mention, the ML treats the MC pretty okay-ishly as of now. He's certainly not a dream guy, I'm not defending his actions, but there are so much worse MLs out there. The story makes a good job of making him pitiable, and at the moment he has more emotional investment in the relationship than MC. Again doesn't really make his actions okay, but MC doesn't seem to care, and many of them are actually beneficial to her.

Either way, I think the writer handled the story well so far, so I have high hopes that she'll continue to do so in the future. <<less
