Dropped this at the chapter it was revealed that the FL is manipulating both the tr*shy "best friend" and the MC. She basically strong-armed the "friend" into being a skinhead. Sure he deserves to be taken down a peg, but she's clearly just doing this because she enjoys watching him ruin his life. A shining beacon of morality this FL is not.

I'm sure all the 1 stars (mine included) aren't for that reason though. No the main reason this gets a 1 is because in accepting the asshat friend's confession,... more>> in addition to the bento chapter, she's shown that she's blatantly toying with the MC's feelings, and the MC, being the simp that he is, muses about how much he's still in love with this walking red-flag. Seriously dude, have some f*cking self respect.

For me at least, this is probably the worst novel Dasui's picked up since Love Glasses all the way back in December of last year. <<less

Let me try to answer your question about whether this series might be for you: Is it sad and tense? Not at all. Is it kinda funny? Sure.

Here's what this series is NOT: Some kind of mature or psychological NTR story with a potentially s**tty main girl that keeps you guessing about who's cheating on whom at any given moment.

Here's what this story more-or-less IS: A typical harem-y comedy with a higher-spec-than-he-seems but impossibly dense MC, intercut with "serves you right" chapters as the first girl enacts her revenge on... more>> the terrible villain "friend." The narration is borderline unreliable for how dense the main character is, and much of the humor derives from him misunderstanding the obvious.

Some minor spoilers for the first ten chapters or so regarding relationships and character motivations so that you can get a feel for what this story is about:

Spoiler

Arata, the MC's confession-thieving fake "friend" is a very basic girl-hurting playboy villain whose misdeeds go beyond what he does to the MC, and who needs to be stopped. Airi Tachibana, the beauty who accepts his confession, is mysteriously head-over-heels in love with the MC before the story even begins, and within the first 10 chapters is already dating the MC in all but name, exchanging cute messages at night, making him love-themed lunches every day, flirting while going on weekend dates, and getting cutely jealous over other girls' affection for him. It's technically not cheating, because the MC gets Arata's (sarcastic) permission to have a physical relationship with her. And there will be at least one more charming girl competing for MC's heart and attention.

So what IS the relationship between first girl Airi and villain Arata? Bully and victim, basically, and definitely not "dating." When Airi accepts his confession, the MC doesn't hear the end of her acceptance: That it's conditional on Arata completing mysterious tasks for Airi, never allowing anyone else to find out that they're "dating, " not calling her by her first name, etc. So they aren't actually dating and he never gets anywhere with her.

So what are the conditions that Arata has to meet to get the girl? So far, they involve converting him from a predatory ikemen playboy into a harmless fat, bald, friendless slob with bad skin and a busted face. It's a pretty long con and provides a half-decent reason for the MC and Airi to not be officially dating. And ruining Arata's life in a way that prevents him from seducing more girls is a perfectly noble pursuit.

[collapse]

The story is a light and cute romance and revenge comedy. Nothing special, but I think anybody giving this one star is probably misunderstanding what's going on in the first couple episodes. <<less
