The novel starts with a the protagonist dying almost immediately due to a betrayal. The pacing is fast, so it never feels slow. Fast forward 400 years later, and our protagonist finds themselves reincarnated as a martial artist, a profession they once despised.

  1. Not Overly Romantic: While there are hints of yuri, they're sprinkled in rather than being the main focus. The primary plot revolves around uncovering the fate of a missing hero party from 400 years ago and attempting to defeat the sealed demon lord.
  2. A Mature Hero: The protagonist is portrayed as a skilled strategist and warrior. As someone mentally strong and capable, they serve as a pillar of support for those around them, and there's no frustrating drama to bog things down. The protagonist acts tough, but surprisingly strategic, which makes them really enjoyable to read about.
I personally enjoyed how the protagonist, despite their tough exterior, is actually a cunning strategist.

  1. 3. Distinctive Heroines: Each heroine brings their unique flair, from a quirky, socially awkward girl to a reliable ally who seems to have the protagonist's back. Every encounter is entertaining.

If you enjoy academy stories, this is twice as good as the usual fodder. This is because the MC isn't someone from our world who isekai'd into the setting with foreknowledge of upcoming events, but rather a member of the Hero Party who died during the quest to kill the Demon Lord and reincarnates 400 years later.

This means instead of reading about someone who's basically following a walkthrough, it's reading about someone who's trying to put the pieces together, both past and future, amidst the usual mess of scheming and... more>> conspiracies that happens within an academy. That makes the quality of the story a tier above the usual.

The primary focus of the story are the mysteries of the past and present - what happened to the former Hero Party and why is history messed up? And what's going on with the current state of the world and what are the demons up to? That makes up most of the storytelling, with the rest split between the MC training (with) her harem party members and fluff with her friends and others who are interested in her.

The MC is also had an enjoyable personality. As a mercenary reincarnated into a tiny, cute, Duke's daughter, the reactions when she reveals her crude and crass nature create quite the gap moe. But above all it's her competence that stands out, with just the right amount of caution without hiding absolutely everything like the typical isekai.

I did worry a bit about some of the misunderstandings at the start since I'm not a fan of them but thankfully they're absent after the beginning. <<less

I'm writing this review because I noticed no one has pointed out that this novel is essentially a copy-paste of another one called Damn Reincarnation. And when I say "copy-paste", I don't mean it's inspired by that work, I mean it literally copies the main events with only a few minor changes.

I won't go into a detailed synopsis or provide an in-depth critique since others have already done so. Instead, I'll share my perspective, as I find it frustrating to see this novel rated 4.0 while Damn Reincarnation, which is... more>> objectively better in every way, has the same rating.

Rather than just complain, let me provide some concrete examples:

The Synopsis.

Both stories follow the same setup:

A team of heroes fights the Demon King. The main hero dies just before achieving victory and later learns what happened through a children's tale (the scene is nearly identical). The main difference is that Damn Reincarnation doesn't feature a sudden betrayal, the "betrayal" is only revealed later in the story.

The Characters.

The characters are practically identical between the two works:

The black magician = Balzac

The martial artist love interest = Sienna (a mix of Sienna and Vermouth)

The traitorous magician = Vermouth

I could list more, but I'll stop here. For informations, there are some unique characters in this novel, but ironically, they're the most generic ones. For example, the MC's bodyguard is just your standard yandere archetype. (You might notice I've omitted most character names because it's been a few months since I last read this novel.)

The Events.

This is where the story completely lost me. Having already read Damn Reincarnation, I could predict every single plot point, making it dull and repetitive to read. For instance:

The Opening Event:

The hero dies, reincarnates as one of his friend's descendants, and learns his situation through a children's tale. It's essentially identical in both stories.

Later Events:

The MC discovers a tomb with their name on it that only they can open. They search for a way to access it and, upon doing so, encounter a powerful black magician. The MC uses a hidden power (same as in Damn Reincarnation) to survive at the cost of a backlash, obtains something from his tomb, and is directed to the next location.

I've only summarized the major points, but the similarities between the two stories is obvious.

In Summary.

This novel is simply a less compelling version of Damn Reincarnation. Here are the main differences:

The story is set in a school.

A few new characters have been added, but they're just walking clichés.

That said, my overall rating for this novel is 3.2. Why? Because if you haven't read Damn Reincarnation, this novel isn't terrible. In fact, there are some small additions that made me smile, such as the protagonist struggling to adapt to modern life after coming from an ancient era.

If I were being completely objective, I'd rate this novel 3.7 by Novel Updates standards. It doesn't deserve a 4, but it's also better than a 3 in terms of quality. I haven't read the author's previous works, so don't take my review personally.

TLDR :

If you haven't read Damn Reincarnation, you might enjoy this novel. But if you have read it, skip this one, it'll only leave you frustrated. <<less

Good start, lore is dispensed in a good way, there's solid world building, and combat is written nicely. Each chapter length is also good. Translation quality is also awesome. Another for my recommended read, especially if you're reading "The Great Sword is not the Main Body!". Same author but this series is their second. Comparing the writing between the two shows how much the author has progressed.

Hmm. The protagonist is a determined, crude a**hole. Possible hidden depth? Maybe. He— now she is interesting. She has her flaws but also good... more>> points. But, those flaws doesn't really detract into her character; it highlights how much alive she is. The same can be said to the other characters introduced.

Especially the Heroes Party. Like things that I seriously enjoy, I'll leave for the future readers of this series to figure out what I mean.

A quick breakdown of chapters is that ch0 to ch10 is the opening, ch11 onwards is Academy Entrance. Not sure when actual Academy Days arc will start. The current translation only covered the written exam portion and the reaction to the MC's answer. Next ch will cover the practical part, the exciting part. It's honestly funny when they make a bit of misunderstandings about the main character. There are misunderstands but they aren't the core of the novel. At least from the looks of what I've seen so far.... Hmm, it's less of the story is carried by the misunderstanding like in novels specialized in those. Rather, the MC does something and how misleading it can be, the other characters react with opinions far from reality.

Anyways, 15 chapters. That should give you an idea if you want to keep reading this novel or not. <<less

The story leaves the feeling that it was originally supposed to be a tragic story about a little weak girl who lived carefree, far from worries and dangers, and then entered a university, where she encountered cruelty and suffering at every step.

However, in the story, in place of the little girl with the grace of a rhinoceros, a veteran of the wars with demons climbed in.

Definitely in the upper echelon of academy novels. It gets a lot more gruesome than I was expecting in terms of violence, and I enjoy the character dynamics. The MC has a lot of room to learn and even grow, but is still suitably powerful. The side characters have been fun, and Stella in particular strikes a good balance between theoretically powerful and socially incompetent. Seriously, the phone number scene had me tearing up bc of how pathetic it was.
