When natural disasters ran rampant, with extreme cold and storms spreading endlessly…

When the world mutated, zombies surged like tides, and eerie horrors emerged…

When the apocalypse descended, massive Devouring Abysses hundreds of kilometers in diameter began appearing around the globe…

When people looked up at the atmospheric cloud layers and saw the slowly emerging corpse of a colossal evil god…

From that day, people began to notice that daylight was arriving later and later, until the sun no longer rose, plunging the world into an unending polar night.

For survival, on that day, the Apocalypse Radio made its final broadcast to the world:

“Everyone, flee eastward—escape to dawn!”

Lin Xian awakened the [Mechanical Heart] ability. He could devour machinery to gain various mysterious skills, scan machines to obtain blueprints for manufacturing, and even use his thoughts to achieve unified control of different machines.

Thus, he found a 200-ton heavy gas-powered locomotive, towing specially modified storage, planting, production, medical, and living carriages, and embarked on a 320,000-kilometer journey along the planetary orbital rail—charging eastward toward the dawn!

I enjoy this a lot; I haven't read many Chinese novels, but this one gives me a very good impression. I love the sense of horror that certain enemies and scenarios elicit from me. I also love the general idea of an apocalypse where the MC has an ability that allows them to sustain themself, and the ability of this novel's MC allows him to do just that.

Maybe I haven't noticed them yet, but there doesn't seem to be any plot holes or forgetfulness. In fact, there have been several... more>> cases where the author introduces something I thought they had forgotten about, but they then address it. The characters feel very resourceful as well, and I don't feel like there many ass-pulls, if at all.

As for negatives, the translation is a big one as mentioned by another reviewer. The grammar is definitely very readable, and the style has felt OK to me, but some Chinese knowledge might unironically be needed in order to not get lost due to how many times someone or something has their name swapped between the Chinese and varying English translations. I also slightly dislike the characterization of one of the female characters who is around 16 years old, and there is a hint of general prejudice against women, but this isn't THAT bad or noticeable (I'm probably reaching). There are a lot of very strong female characters in this novel. Also, if you dislike harem, this novel isn't too bad with it, but there is a little bit. Even as a harem disliker myself, however, it's really not a big deal to me.

Overall, I think this novel is a gem for this website's standards. <<less

The novel is amazing, easily one of the best ones in the site, the plot is great, the characters very well done, the world building is amazing and the action is on another level. Let me explain:

The plot, while it's a classic "zombie outbreak and people start to get powerups", it's very well done, with no obivious plot holes to pull you out of the story, no mary sues that just resolve every problem, or any kind of "hand of god" forcing the plot in the direction the author wants,... more>> everything connects very well from start to where Im right now.

As for the characters, so far almost everyone has ben very well written, because while you might have the occasional "evil guy is just evil because", the main cast has been well written, with clear likes and dislikes, the same for some of the secondary characters that appear across the story. Could it be better? Yes, author could do a better job to describe what some people think, but at least here you would notice who is in the scene even if the author forgot to write their names, more than I could say for other novels where the only difference between some characters is literally just their names.

The world building is amazing, one of the best parts of the novel, it goes from classic "zombie infested world" to a world the characters are still understanding after the apocalypses, it rapidly evolves to an almost Lovecraftian or cosmic horror novel, where every discovery just pulls you further in the horror the world has become.

And for the action, all the scenes are amazing and heart pumping, I literally read 160 chapters in 2 days, every new expedition or fight just seamlessly links to the next, giving you just enough breathing room to calm down a little before the next one, leaving you just wanting to read more.

If you only have time to read 1 novel, make sure it's this one. <<less

I gave this a try thinking it was going to be the typical chinese apocalyptic novel with the typical protagonist getting chicks like pokemon and killing zombies to level up. But!.

What I found:

Decent writing: Better than 90% of novels of this genre for sure. The pacing is good, from the first chapter there is no meaningless filler, the journey and all steps to survival are taken with a purpose in mind.

The world: This is the part I like the most, as is to be expected of a pocalyptic world, there... more>> is danger everywhere. You won't find the typical start point of just moving from place to place trying to evade zombies for 100 chapters straight. Actually, zombies are the less threatning enemy out there. From early on we see a good variety of enemies presented in unexpected, mysterious and horrific ways. No place is safe!, and I like that the characters are surrounded by all sorts of enemies, harsh environment, monsters, mutants, other strong survivors, and extremely strong and inexplicable phenomena/beings that they are helpless about. So they have to be smart about fighting, hiding or flleeing.

Spoiler

There is a cycle of long hours of night and short hours of day that is very important and dictates how difficult it is to survive.

[collapse]

The fights: There are no boring fights, the fights until this point always give a sense of mistakes=death. The MC is not overpowered as his skill is not oriented to fights, which makes every dangerous encounter a struggle that needs a mix of brains and brawls.

The Mc: He is very levelheaded, he knows his limits and has his priorities straight. Always thinking before acting and when he does, he does it resolutely. That includes escaping when he knows he can't win. This MC is no hero. He won't stop helping anybody that wont be able to help him back and is very distrustful to strangers so The MC will not trust no one with the slightest probability of being an enemy.

The companions:
Spoiler

There are four (as in chapter 90+)

[collapse]
. They are all competent with some role to play, having the smarts and abilities helpful in fights or knowledge aplicable to various fields that are key during the journey.

Overall, this novel ticks all my boxes. If I have to mention a negative is some inconsistency with a character`s name that keeps changing. Apart from that, the translation is good, flows smoothly and, even if there are some other mistakes, they are not worth mentioning. <<less

I didn’t expect to enjoy this novel as much as I did. I mean, it’s literally a story about a train, how exciting could that be, right? But somehow, the author manages to make it incredibly engaging. The pacing is tight, the atmosphere is immersive, and the worldbuilding is surprisingly original. It doesn’t feel like one of those 'fast food' stories (as I like to call them) you’ve read a dozen times before. It’s got its own flavor, and that uniqueness really pulls you in. It’s what some might call... more>> a breath of fresh air.

Now, I did take off one star, and that’s mostly due to two things: the way female characters are written, and the translation quality.

Starting with the female characters, yeah, the author’s approach is weird. I don’t even know how to explain it properly without spoiling anything, but let’s just say it’s noticeable, and not in a good way. You’ll see what I mean when you read it. Fortunately, it doesn’t completely ruin the experience, and it’s something you can mostly overlook if you're focused on the main plot.

What bothers me more is the translation. It’s clear that it was run through ChatGPT or some other ai with minimal to no editing. There are inconsistent terms throughout, which can be jarring when you're deep into a chapter. It’s not unreadable by any means, but it’s rough around the edges, and that does take away from the immersion. If the translator tightened things up and gave it a proper polish, this would easily be a 4.5-star read for me.

And I have to mention this because it drove me crazy, there’s a chapter with a list that includes emojis. Actual emojis. In a novel. Like why???

Still, despite those flaws, the story itself is strong enough to keep me reading. If you’re looking for something a little different and don’t mind a few rough spots, it’s definitely worth reading. <<less
