This novel has been adapted into a movie named Danur: I Can See Ghosts (2017), directed by Awi Suryadi. The key characters who bring the story to life are Prilly Latuconsina as Risa Saraswati, Shareefa Daanish as the ghostly Asih, Kevin Bzezovski Taroreh as Jantje Heinrich Janshen (also spelled Janshen), etc. It was a major box-office success, becoming one of Indonesia’s top horror films and marking the start of the "Danur Universe."
Indonesia has a long and complex history with both the Dutch and the Japanese, which has given rise to countless stories passed down from generation to generation. These stories often include names, wars, events, daily life during Dutch colonial rule, the cruelty and brutality of the Japanese soldiers, and how both Dutch and Japanese authorities treated the Indonesian people. They tell of how the colonizers oppressed, mu*dered, tortured, controlled, and plundered Indonesia’s natural wealth without the slightest concern for the fate of its native inhabitants.
So, it’s no surprise that you’ll find many references to the Dutch and Japanese in the course of Indonesia’s historical development—including in novels like Danur and many other Indonesian literary works
