I decided to make this list to share with you my favorite Chinese historical romance novels, set either in Ancient China or within Imperial Courts. Before we dive into it, let me explain the criteria I used to create this list.... more>>

I tried to organize them in a rough order of preference, but it’s not an exact ranking — every story here has something special that stood out to me. When it comes to this genre, there are a few things I value the most:

Realism: I love narratives and characters that make sense within the historical context, that feel captivating but also believable.

Well‑written storytelling: I prefer novels with detailed world‑building and careful attention to character relationships and historical accuracy.

Convincing characters: If the protagonists or other characters don’t feel consistent or well‑developed, I usually don’t include them in my list.

Finding truly good novels in this genre can be hard, since many fall into clichés or skip proper historical research. That’s why I want to share the ones I think are genuinely worth reading. Some of them you might already know, while others may be new discoveries for you.

Every read here is peak in some way, be world-building, concept, characters, power systems, and more. For instance, if it is garbage and completely braindead overpowered, it is one of the best in the genre at being so (you need some diversity in life in order for you to not get bored and feel apathetic about reading...it's terrible).

Take some ratings (especially outside the top 15-20) with a grain of salt, because it is hard to justify which one is better for the most part especially because some of the genres are so different. Some stories are not on novelupdates, like Mother of Learning and The Perfect Run to name some. Some I just can't think of because my memory is terrible (especially less popular reads). Also I'm lazy so it's not ordered the best lol

It may also be helpful to note that I am perfectly fine with reading whatever, and I don't really have a long-lasting obsession for much but I typically enjoy world-building followed by character development. You can probably tell anyways though lol—feel free to leave recommendations! I have a very long list that keeps on growing..
