A two-billion-won debt left by her mother.

She thought everything was over.

“How long should I borrow for?”

That was until a man, who claimed to be the brother of the loan shark, made her an offer.

“I’ll extend the repayment period to three years, and provide you with a place to stay during that time.”

Three years of living together, with no strings attached.

All he wanted was for her to stay by his side.

“Lee Seok, you’re not going to pay off my debt, are you?”

But he was too perfect a man not to fall in love with.

To the point where she almost forgot that their relationship was doomed from the start.

So, she harbored a foolish hope.

Lee Seok gently rubbed her cheek, smiling playfully, just like Yeowon always did.

“Your debt is your debt, Yeowon.”

***

“You betrayed me for money, and now you’re saying you don’t care about it anymore?”

“…I, I don’t like you. I don’t like this at all.”

At her words, Lee Seok looked at her with a pained expression, as if someone had reopened an old wound.

With a face that was half-smiling, half-crying, he spoke in a fragile voice.

“You’ve always been out of sync with my thoughts.

From the beginning… from the very start…

You’ve messed up my thoughts, my gaze, my plans.

Everything’s become a mess.

It’s really unbearable, how much you’ve shaken me, how you’ve broken me like this…”

Here we have a modern love story between FL, who inherited a huge debt at a young age, and ML, a wealthy, powerful member of an organized crime group and the brother of FL's loan shark.

The story goes back and forth between the past and the present. Some might not enjoy that, but I thought the shifts were well done, and it helped establish where FL was coming from without dragging too much. I felt like I could understand why she betrayed ML ... more>>

by selling information in order to clear her debt, and under threat at that.

Most of all, I found her thoughts and feelings of love and resentment - both in the past and when looking back on it in the present - really relatable. That's what struck me the most about the story so far.

I haven't gotten to ML's point of view yet, but I don't hate him. We see him sometimes cold, affectionate, and even desperate. But I can understand FL's reluctance to accept him again in the present. There are some signs he might have a mental illness (a dusty prescription bottle), and I get that impression from FL's descriptions of him. I look forward to understanding him better.

If you're looking for a somewhat angsty modern love story between two adults, definitely give this a try! <<less

I think the ML can be viewed as a red flag, but that's not the main point of the novel.

It's a very well-written novel where you really get to dive deep into the FL and ML's perspective of love.

FL gets back together with ML, but you don't feel like she shouldn't. Like she said, this is just what she wants to do right now. She doesn't owe him anything and he doesn't owe her anything. If they break up, they break up.

The novel does a really good job communicating the different nuance in their relationship, and while some part is frustrating, you still root for the FL. <<less
