I really like the novel till the angst part bt after the reunion it felt so fast paced, everything is happening so quickly, it felt so abrupt, how the reconciliation is so easy. Just because of this I am going to give this novel a 4 star. I think "hope you've been well" by bei Nan has wrote a very good reconciliation scene. If anyone wants to read it go check it out that novel is amazing (p.s the novel dealt with some heavy topic so don't forget to check... more>> the trigger warnings)

Spoiler

P.s 1- I really don't like MC father's what he did after the reveal was so traumatizing I don't know how the MC processed all that shit

P.s 2- and this might be an unpopular opinion bt I don't really hate ml's mom uk because that sh*t she went through was traumatizing ngl. I pity her that doesn't mean I agree with all her actions bt I think I can understand her. Xoxo

The best way I can describe this novel is that it meanders through the youth of two boys as they get to know each other and grow up together. It took me a while to get through it, unlike some other youth novels, as the plot is quite slow and the characters just sort of hang out and chit chat most of the time. Though I would call it a little overrated, it's definitely still a good read.

The overall atmosphere of this novel is very calm and characters' emotions are... more>> pretty muted for the most part, except for the end of the fourth and most of the last book where the pace really picks up. For this reason, I had to take a lot of breaks while reading the first few parts, and I didn't really feel the urge to binge read as I usually do. I read a lot of slice of life so I'm used to slow plots, but this novel really does drag more than usual.

The romance development mostly just comes out of nowhere, in that the characters just suddenly seem to catch feelings and there's not much development between friendship and romance, but both stages are sweet and enjoyable. The friendship lowkey also came out of nowhere, but I guess that's how it is irl too, so it's realistic in that way. Not sure if I would call this a slow burn as there's no real ambiguous period but it does take a while for them to both catch feelings and start dating.

ML was hard for me to understand or get a read on, as he's very quiet and doesn't say much. Definitely more a showing his love than speaking it aloud type of personality, and it really takes until the fourth book when we get a few chapters speaking from his POV where it's more clear how he feels. By the last book though, ML feels like a real person, and he's no longer this cold, mysterious character.

By the time I got midway through the fourth book I was wondering when it would all go to sh*t so I definitely got more invested by then. I will say though, I didn't cry when they were separated. I really expected to, but maybe it was just too dramatic and there was too much being revealed all at once for me to process clearly. Definitely a dramatic series of chapters, and the parents in particular can eat shit. Their reunion though... that brought tears to my eyes.

Last book was definitely my favorite characterization, with the characters portrayed much more vividly to the point where I mostly forgot how lackluster the beginning few books felt in comparison. On the romance, they're minors for most of the novel so it doesn't get too descriptive about the physical aspect when they start dating, but as adults they're decently handsy with each other. I'll probably re-read this at some point, maybe with the official TL, as I feel this is a story that'll be better the second time.

If this wasn't so popular I may give five stars but I think I came in with too high of expectations and so I'm a bit disappointed. I really love 木苏里's other novels and characterization, so this one surprised me with how boring I found the characters and the plot, at least in the first three books. I really just didn't understand where the plot was going for most of this story, which also made it harder to keep my interest.

About the long separation tag:

Spoiler

They're separated for 6 years, but those years are summed up in just a chapter.

Absolute best

A great story with a slowburn, coming-of-age, slice-of-life, high-school romance. Loved everything about the novel. I avoided this novel for so long because I heard it was extremely angsty but I'm glad that I decided to read this book.

I love both main characters and their relationship. From being rivals to friends to lovers, it was an extremely beautiful journey. Their interactions were so sweet. ML despite having cold and aloof personality cared for MC deeply. Jiang Tian's past was extremely painful to read, my boy went through a lot... more>> at a very young age. MC had not had it easy either as his dad was quite neglectful. Despite adapting quickly to new surroundings he did feel lonely. So I'm glad that they found each other.

All the side characters were lovable too, from teachers to friends to colleagues. I loved the bond between the students of class A. Even after everything was revealed I'm so glad that they didn't treat Sheng Wang any different than before.

Spoiler

"Nobody knew they were together, but everybody was a witness to the way they belonged to each other"

"Etched in my bones, it says: I still love you."

These lines hit deep.

[collapse]

Overall a really good story with romance, comedy and angst.

I'd give up everything to read this book for the first time again.

(ch23. nov25) I just have to write a mini review while reading b/c I love it so much so far (and I'm rather selective with the slice of life types). Mu Su Li creates a story where you can feel as though you're in the moment with the characters, and makes even the most simplest of things bring you a feeling of melancholy that can set you at ease. The pace of the story is comfortable; at the surface it's a slow progression between Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian... more>> but really it's all significant subtleties that can rarely be found with any other person.

EDIT (dec18) : Despite how heart wrenching (and likely to be unforgettable) this story was, my heart is warm and a sense of calm rest seemed to have settle within me...

Everything I've previously mentioned remains the same, but now I see far more depth into it of course. Mu Su Li describes so many important and meaningful aspects of life that occurs to everyone with a natural flow. For me, this story is about how there's always more meaning than what it seems beneath relationships, but often times, it's hard to describe and put into words. Yet, the feeling and emotions we have about them are certain. With that sort of writing, it's focused on the development and healing of people. Everything is very specific............. but still incredibly universal.

It wasn't full of the relationship troubles / development of Jiang tian and Sheng wang. You might expect for the first couple dozen chapters, but then our world gradually but surely expands onto other characters. Everyone is weaved together in some way, whether indirectly or directly, it's something that doesn't get overlooked (but there's also not a random amount of empathy for certain characters when it isn't due). There was just enough details given on relationships to derive a conclusion. Sometimes I had to reread a few small parts to truly understand what one character is implying to the other, but it was satisfying to come to those realizations... Mu Su Li is a genius in her writing T_T.

This story means a lot to me, and I truly say this from my heart. I was struggling to come in terms with some of my own life problems, or you can say stuck in the past while also wanting to develop one certain plan to follow in the future... Surprisingly, this was also a recurring theme in the story. And in the end, a lesson we learn was that the future is always uncertain, there are many things that could go way differently from what you expected (and be outside of your ability to understand beforehand). I mean...... that's the sort of thing you often hear. But to actually read something that makes it feel so personal for you... w ow <<less

I'm not rly a fan of high school themed novels since most novels I have read do not rly tell much about high school life. But MouMou changed my view on them.

Since it's based on Chinese school system, some parts are a little confusing but overall, this novel really reflects students life.

Classes/assignments/exams ✔ Your noisy and idiotic but also wonderful classmates ✔ Strict and scary but kind teachers ✔ Dorm life✔

I'll never shut up about how Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang loves each other.

I enjoy every words and I can not thank you enough for the author & the You who translated it so beautifully. Thank you. This is a simple story, a slice of life. It's beautiful & feel so realistic. The love is slow burn & nothing is so vulgar. Everything is warm, nice & decent. Like an old blanket. The humor is there, enough to make me smile ear to ear. The conflicts, the climax, the solution, the love, everything is there. Absolutely love it, even though not my #1... more>> BL novel but I do cherish it. The reason why it's not in my top list bc it's so light, like a feather, to innocent for my dirty soul. But please read it, it's totally definitely absolutely worth it.

It's probably because I've read too much school life novels already that I did not enjoy this novel as much as I thought I would.

It is a great novel, I would recommend this to anyone. It's just that it did not meet my high expectations.

I love Jiang Tian. He's a well-written character (albeit being a typical cold genius character) that makes my heart go soft. But Sheng Wang, I just think he's too girly sometimes idk why...

Also, I am giving the drama here a 10/10 because it hit me hard.... more>> Believe me, at some point in this novel I wanted the two to break up because I thought I couldn't handle the family crisis they would have if their relationship were to be found out by their parents...

Another thing that I dislike in this novel was the pacing and the ending. I really think the ending was weak and didn't leave a deep impression on me.

That's all because I'm terribly terrible at giving reviews and in English in general. <<less

First of all guys prepare tissues before even starting reading it!

I cried reading the story and literally felt the pain!

MC and ML both are loving in their own ways... There was a time I was quite angry at the reaction of both their parents but later understood from where they're coming from!

... more>> Also I really like how the author didn't make the Old man Ding just a passerby character and made him one of the family members too!

I enjoyed and adore every one of Class A's students and their teachers as well... Every character is precious!

The most touching part was the reunion part for me as it reminded me of my highschool days and how we were back then...

All in all I really enjoyed reading the novel but I might never read it again as it's too heart-wreaking for me... Their separation is beyond something I can handle again and again! <<less

5 Stars!!! I'm on my knees!!!!

One of the few novels which made me comment in NU even though I had to guess my credentials for a whole day and a half. It is a great journey and I offer my knees to both author and translator for letting us see the growth of these two people. I swear this novel is so good and the characters are like people in flesh; the subtleties of youth, the rashness, the perception of things, the simplicity in complex things and the complexity in... more>> the simple ones. It was so beautifully articulated that every word brings you an image of everyday and every year that they spent with each other.

They aren't perfect, the people around them aren't either but there were certainly times when even I wanted to stop time for them, at those points in their life where everything seems to just float --when they were the happiest.

IMO this novel captured how one person can be deeply connected with another. You were living your life as usual then one person comes along and everything changes, and then you just can't turn back to how it was before them.

It's not even my story but I feel like I'm reminiscing with them as the story goes on wuwuwuwu <<less

Let me just drop this review here. It's a good read. Very emotional. I cried when they share the 1st kiss. I cried when the stood at the hospital corridor. I cried when Jiang Tian ran to the bench to claim the drunk Sheng Wang. Uhuuu~

The translation is superb. The storyline is superb.

I saw a comment above regarding Ji Huanyu and Du Sheng's relationship being regarded as disgusting and it kinda baffled the reader. But here's my thought.

Spoiler

IMO, it's not their homos*xual relationship that is being regarded as disgusting. It's his action. The fact that he's married and do the deed while his kid is around then shut him out the door after the poor kid find out. That's what makes it disgusting.

The act of betrayal to both his spouse and kid, that's disgusting. It's understandable if he suddenly realized he can love Du Sheng. But it's unbearable when he just stood by as a bystander while watching his spouse running around trying to get her sh*t together and ignored the little kid as he bask in the halo of love between Du Sheng and him. He could've opt for a better option. Such as, divorce his wife first and then be a good father to the kid while letting the kid know that he's slightly different but he just have to go all scummy and leave the mother son pair to struggle while he enjoy his life with his new love somewhere else.

The fact that he realized he's s*um but proceeds to act like one, all holier-than-thou, to gain his son's favor after all the trauma he caused to his son is also disgusting. Him being gay isn't disgusting. Ji Huanyu himself is disgusting. Along with Du Sheng that homewrecker that's supposed to be Jiang Ou's best friend.

So, it's understandable for them to think JHY and DS are disgusting. They just happened to be gay and the majority still finds it unacceptable at the time. If they take a different route, no one's going to throw the word disgusting to their faces.

I love the story, the tempo and the emotional roller coaster ride. Qingtranslate did a great job with the translation.

The only thing that made me disappointed was how the love affair between Ji Huanyu and Du Cheng was described as disgusting and everyone kept mocking them every time they tried to apologize. I don't expect Jiang Tian to show filial piety towards his father but at least can't they just sit down and talk nicely over tea or something?

Thank you so much to the translator for their hard work!!💜

... more>> Also to that Kitsunesuki person who complained and said it was tr*sh after reading 8 chapters: dumbass :)

You're telling me our baby Jiang Tian is an annoying cold jackass? Oh HELL NO- I mean sure, he definitely was in the beginning. That's why it's not love at first sight sweetie~ If you're gonna judge a character or even an entire book just by reading the literal beginning then you're kinda like those people who judge a person when they don't even know them- Sheng Wang didn't know Jiang Tian at the start. Nor did we as the readers. We got to get to know him with time. Many people might come off as rude at the start, but once you get to know them you find out whether that's really true. You also find out the cause. If you went through the same sh*t he went through, I bet you'd not be friendly either. My suggestion is go read the book again. Maybe you'll refresh your mind :) <<less

Rating: 4.5/5- This was a fantastic read! Memorable, poignant, heartbreaking and real.

The story was really wonderful, characters well rounded and the ending fitting. It wasn’t angsty like I expected, it was very realistic and a fair portrayal of the struggles of s*xual identity and young love.

I was satisfied with the natural progression, the worries and internal conflict that people went through and how everything played out.

Ahaha, the journey's finally over. I started reading this when there's just a few translations available, and now it's finished!

-----

Our ML (Jiang Tian) and MC's (Sheng Wang) personality is a stark contrast. But! It's what makes them compatible. JT is like a bloke of ice, his emotions always hidden, but SW is like a sun, always radiating with energy, and it's bound to melt, and reveal the emotions trap inside the ice wall that JT put up for himself.

Jiang Tian and Xiao Wang's journey is definitely heart filling, full of... more>> youth and innocence but not free from obstacles. They're like broken pieces, that coincidentally makes up a whole—in which before they found each other, they were doing fine, yet when they found each other they were at their best—so you wouldn't be able to bear to separate them again. Even if you do, they'll continue to seek each other anyway. That's how they are. And I'm a sucker of rekindling old flames, so I like it very much. Though at some point, I felt like it's over dramatic
Spoiler

for example when SW realized his feelings for JT so he decided to flunk some of his exams to get transferred to lower section. They're just sections apart, but they act like... ah, it would just make you sigh and say, "young love, indeed".

[collapse]

Alas, my only misgivings is that I read some of Mu Su Li's works and I suffer from that slow progress and a sudden abrupt ending. I thought we're just getting to the climax but in fact, we're already close to the resolution, and poof! It's like when you're eating chips, you keep picking it up until you realized there's no more, and it makes you crave for more.

Anyway, that meant it's a good read because it can get you carried away. So I encourage you to give it a try. I'd also like to thank qingtranslates for their wonderful translations, I especially love them because they release multiple chapters at once ah, I will miss the days I'm waiting for the update LOL! <<less

This is my first time to write a review about a novel. Really, I didn't expected this novel to be this good and well written, at first I was a little hesitant to read this because this novel contain a little angst, but to be honest the angst was not bat at all and can be considered necessary for the purpose of the plot. Also at first I was a little confused about the ML character. But as the plot continue to flow, the ML makes me fall in love... more>> with him as the MC do. This novel never boring to read and makes me want to continue the next chapter as soon as possible. As this review was written, I still waiting for the next chapter to be updated. When I saw this novel with ALMOST all 5 star reviews (except one that only read 8 chapters), I got curious and read it right away.

It's meh at first, got annoyed with the ML. But I was still curious what made people said this was the best BL novel. And I'm glad I stayed reading.

I got to read how this precious neglected boys met, how they became friends and came to love one another. And it was beautifully written. Mind you, there were some plot holes, but the focus was... more>> them so.. I didn't mind.. Ok maybe I mind a bit- like about the parents.

Spoiler

I wanted to punched the parents. Why nobody said anything about the selfish, neglectful parents??

MC's dad for neglecting him, for saying such hurtful things to him, for never hearing his sons words, for being such a selfish parent.

ML's dad for leaving him, for traumatizing him, for going to his school just to drag ML to the mud too, for outing the ML and ruining his life when he never even in the picture in the first place. Why did you even came in the first place? Just to ruined your son? The one you left? What a shitty dad.

ML's mom, who never even raised him, for making a sad dog face everytime and making him guilty when it's actually her fault as she never been a mom to him, for trying to compensate poorly, for ruining her son's once in a lifetime perfect birthday when she probably never remember before, for being a homophobe, for breaking them up. Just stop trying to be a mom when you're not ready. Heal yourself first. Go to a doctor.

[collapse]

Other than that, I was so happy to read this. Such a journey. If only I can comment on the site lol. Cause everyone probably got mad at certain chapters too. <<less

Nothing is better than well done, slice of life. It really is my favourite genre of all time. The story is like a beautiful river and it feels like dipping your foot in the river on a warm sunny day. It’s been awhile since I’ve felt moved by a story to this extent.

Honestly people have written such beautiful reviews. It felt gratifying to read that this novel made people feel the same emotions I did.

Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang will both pull at your heart strings. Their high school days... more>> are so beautifully written. Nothing extraordinary happens yet everything happens. As I pen down this review maybe 6-7 months after I finished the novel. I can still distinctly remember most of those moments. This in itself tells you the kind of impact this story had on me. The good, the lovely, the angst everything worked for me.

Usually novels, even when there is angst and sadness. I don’t genuinely get sad because I know that they will get back together and there will be reunion and it will be fine.

However, this time when the angst came, I was deeply saddened by what happened. Maybe because the author wrote it so organically. It didn’t feel like an abrupt or forced play of events to induce sadness in her readers.

Sometimes you are young and helpless and things do not go your way. And that pain changes you, it lingers.

I quite like the father - son conversation that happened about the relationship. It beautifully portrays the helplessness of a teenager and the steadfastness of a young adult coming into his own in this world. <<less
