As he regained his senses, he realized that he had transmigrated into a web novel, and the problem was that it was a dreadful horror novel!

The world was overflowing with unidentified gods and monsters, and the weakest beings in this universe were humans.

The protagonist, who had possessed the body of ‘Arenheit Hartman,’ a member of a ruined family in this doomed world, discovered that their family was entwined with mysterious sorcery.

“As a human, I will survive and live like a human.”

Can Arenheit, with his rationality intact, reach the ending?

This novel is really incredible! I love that there are a lot of nods to the Yellow King in here because he’s my favorite eldritch critter lol.

In the novel, the main character, Arenheit, wakes up in the body of a supporting character in an unpopular novel his younger brother wrote. In order to survive, he attempts to start rebuilding the estate and his assets using his knowledge on the book, only to realize that wandering carelessly in this world can cost you everything.

See the spoiler for a clearer understanding of... more>> the time loop.

Spoiler

This is a regression novel where every time Arenheit is killed by the crown prince Yurik, he is sent back to the beginning when he first woke up Arenheit, right after Arenheit was given the title of Duke Hartmann and was on his way back to the duke’s mansion with Arndt and Leandros. The loop only restarts when the crown prince kills him. If he is killed by another force or person, his body is able to regenerate by consuming matter around him, whether that be fruits, vegetables, bread, animal meat, monster meat or human flesh.

[collapse]

Adding on to what the other reviewer said, I believe Arenheit doesn’t react immediately to the horror elements around him as a protective mechanism. For instance, in the scenes where he

Spoiler

kills people to regenerate his body, he blanks out/forgets that he does so to maintain “normalcy” and only is forced to face what he did when the crown prince tells him what he’s done in front of the east pit I think and Arenheit goes mad as a result.

[collapse]

Another example is in the beginning of the novel Arenheit says that his brother in his old world just “went missing” one day but later on he admits to himself and to us that

Spoiler

his brother is dead.

[collapse]

However, this only last during the first loop and in the next loops he’s more aware and able to respond to the unknown and madness inducing events. Arndt and Leandros of subsequent loops also note he’s becoming more similar to how calm and decisive the late Duchess was, though one of Arenheit’s servants also say the Duchess would have hated how soft and kind Arenheit is. Based on the Duchess’s diary, though, it seems the Duchess wasn’t as calm as she portrayed outwardly, understandably because she couldn’t find a way to stop the end of the world no matter what she tried.

The main antagonist so far is the crown prince, who I hate but also find super fascinating. In each loop, we see different aspects of him, see him choose different options and form different relationships with Arenheit but which all show different aspects of his deep malice towards the world, the original protagonist and to Arenheit. Each loop offers something new to discover about the world so even when we’re brought back to the beginning, we still are moving forward in exploring the parts of the world Arenheit wasn’t able to examine in previous loops.

There is A LOT I could talk about from this novel, but one of the most tragic elements to me was Arenheit’s younger brother. The next part is going to be a mess, so I just want to say please give this story a chance if you like else themed stories. The characters are fascinating, and each choice Arenheit makes leads to new revelations and new understanding of the world they inhabit. The main villain is threatening, vile, intelligent and weirdly charismatic and makes me want to punch him, and Leondros while sometimes annoying is also Arenheit’s nominal son or maybe nephew? He is his younger brother’s character after all lol.

Spoiler

The MC and his younger brother lost their parents at a young age and were sent to an orphanage after being tossed around by their relatives. MC worked hard for many years to support his brother and finally get accepted into a good university. After he got in though, the orphanage couldn’t let him stay there anymore but his brother wouldn’t be able to handle being alone, so MC took his brother with him to stay with him during uni. MC took loans to afford to go to school but after school he ended up in a black company I think or just a company where his job was far from ideal. It wasn’t really clear since this is based off of what his brother described MC’s job and happiness being like. Anyways seeing how MC ended up as, his brother decided he didn’t want to go to university and instead wanted to find a job to help MC out, which turned out to be trying to write a webnovel. MC didn’t approve of it but still he thought it’d be fine and his younger brother could apply for uni in a few years. His younger brother seemed really excited in the beginning. He’d buy writing books and read them over and over again, check out how other writers wrote and began writing his own lovecraftian medieval fantasy story. MC didn’t really keep an eye on him, and just let him do what he wanted, though he was skeptical that the novel would bring in any money. As more time passed, his brother’s novel remained low in the rankings with only double digits views and more often than not people would leave bad reviews complaining about the setting being inconsistent and too many new characters and plot threads being introduced. Slowly, the pressure kept building up on the younger brother but he still kept trying to write the novel until one day he came to MC.

I’m really sorry I just I can’t put into words I can’t really do it justice but this part devastated me. I. His younger brother came to him saying the novel wasn’t doing very well and that maybe he should just take the college entrance exams. MC didn’t seem to really know the weight his younger brother was carrying or how much the negative comments and lack of attention his novel received effected him, but MC agreed. He didn’t know how much the novel meant to his younger brother. He didn’t think it mattered if novel did badly because as long as they could live there would always be a way forward. So he said yes his younger brother should give up. In his younger brother’s eyes this was the person closest to him putting the final nail in the coffin and the next day he jumped in front of a moving vehicle and killed himself.

It’s bad enough MC lost the child he had raised and protected since their parents died. It’s bad enough that because MC didn’t have friends and didn’t have any experience with social media that he didn’t understand how vicious online harassment could be. But then later on after having died, been betrayed, died, lost the people he viewed as his brother’s precious creations, and died again, he finds his brother again. His soul maybe. We don’t even know his younger brother’s name. It’s blocked out as if someone had erased its existence. And he’s sitting on a mound of puppets, hundreds of Leonadros, duchesses, Arndts, characters from every iteration of the story the younger brother had tried to write to please a greater being. He’s gone mad, and can’t even recognize his older brother standing in front of him. MC realizing that his brother’s soul never found rest after he died but was instead suffering this whole time trying to find a perfect ending for his story... it’s a fate neither brother deserved after all the pain they went through.

[collapse]

The Duchess is also an interesting character. When we first see her from the original Arenheit’s memories and based on the “crimes” the royal family said the Hartmann family committed, it seems like she might have been a heartless or cruel character, but the more we read and see, it’s more like she’s seen too much to afford to be emotionally attached while trying to find a way to protect the world from annihilation. I hope we get to learn more about her and why Leondros was so in love with her too.

Spoiler

I think. I. I don’t know how I feel but when Leondros. When he said he missed the old Arenheit, the Arenheit from before he would sacrifice his body and die over and over again to protect the people who were supposed to be protecting him. It hurt but I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just sad, and also I think the first time in the novel I saw anyone miss the original Arenheit. The body Arenheit is in was always meant to be a vessel for the transmigrated Arenheit. The memories of learning all the different subjects the Duchess forced og Arenheit to take were also just all the things that out Arenheit, the older brother to “god” was supposed to inherit. The OG Arenheit was childish, selfish and unable to live as an independent functional adult, but even then I guess... it felt sad I guess. But well Leondros I guess just meant he didn’t want to see Arenheit act like that. So selflessly that it’s monstrous, inhuman.

[collapse]

I might come back and add more to this review, but these are some of the things I thought about while reading. As a horror novel and a tragic novel, it’s fantastic and I really hope more people will read this. <<less

So far, it is like a horror story. Since it is still beginning, I can't speak more about the story background aside from it is medieval time and it is dark fantasy like Cthulhu type.

This story follow MC, which is transported into a horror novel. But in this story, MC is surprisingly act like a normal person. As if he is not aware he is in something horror. I don't know is it because he is mentally like a normal person or other factor, but I think he lack waryness... more>> of knowing he is in horror world.

Though since I just read the beginning, I better not make that judgements. I will edit this review after reading more. Maybe <<less
