Ming Huashang was the younger fraternal twin sister. Her birth symbolized auspiciousness and she lost her mother at a young age causing Duke Zhen to dote on her immensely. She was spoiled to the point where she became ignorant, incompetent, and lazy; she was the complete opposite of her elder fraternal twin brother who was renowned all throughout Chang’an. Ming Huashang originally lived a peaceful life, prepared to dilly dally and eat till she died. Until one night, she had a dream and learned that she was actually a fake daughter.

The two children were swapped at birth, and the real daughter was living among the commoners. Although she was raised in an impoverished environment, she was diligent and motivated. She became a well-known talented woman at a young age, in stark contrast to her fake.

Later, the truth was revealed. The real daughter was taken back to the duke manor causing her status as the fake daughter to plummet. In the end, she was poisoned to death, silently, in the middle of the night.

Ming Huashang, whose biggest dream was to live a long life before dying, was terrified. Seeing that there was only one year left before the return of the real daughter, Ming Huashang tucked her tail between her legs, got her act together, and tried her best to please her elder twin brother in name, Ming Huazhang.

But her aloof and excellent elder brother couldn’t be fooled. Ming Huashang failed to please her big thigh, so she gave up decisively and set her sights on her real elder brother – the top scholar Su Xingzhi, the future prime minister from humble beginnings.

After the third time Ming Huashang sneaked out to meet the newly minted top scholar, Ming Huazhang appeared in her room late at night and said to her in disappointment, “Younger sister, why is your patience still so poor.”

Nice read so far!

Just a warning, read the tags before reading the novel. It isn't the usual fake/real daughter dog-blood drama. I almost dropped this after reading the first 20 chapters because it wasn't as I expected. I've read some other novels by this author, and this is different from them.

As you can see, there are Investigations, Crime and Mystery Solving in the tags. So yeah, our FL will investigate cases along with some other individuals. Hehe

So far I am enjoying it as it's not like the usual fake daughter of the nobles trope. She's no Mary Sue but she values herself and understands her shortcomings. I think its weird people are shipping her with her "fake" brother. Even if it's not in*est, and this is ancient times, the two were still raised as siblings. To develop romantic feelings for someone raised under your roof feels in*estious. But I suppose that is why the author had the pair of phoenix twins be estranged from each other... more>> and even develop different personalities. I just hope they give her consistent character development and time to shine on her own. <<less

Really like the MC so far. She’s aware of her downfalls and is proactive despite not taking joy in scheming and plotting. I wonder who the ML will be? - LONG REVIEW AHEAD -

Another brilliant work from Septer Flowing Fire!! Such a rollercoaster rider reading this novel. It's not your typical romance novel as it includes mystery as per the tag. It also includes heavy politics and many non-fictional characters set in Tang dynasty, era of the Female Emperor Wu Zetian so, it may not be everyone's cup... more>> of tea. And just to add, although many non-fictional characters are present in the novel, some parts may not be historically accurate or were changed for the sake of the plot so take it with a grain of salt.

The characters:

Ming Huazhang - If righteousness is a person, it'll definitely be him. Often time he really frustrates me due to his principles and strong sense of righteousness. I've read so many characters and only now do I dare to say he's the white character in the white and black characters analogy. But although he frustrates me sometimes and he's too perfect and gentlemanly, he never felt 2D. I've felt him struggled and wavered to stand by what he firmly beliefs even though it often left him disappointed, betrayed, and melancholy. I've realized that such a rare person is what keeps the world balance. It is because black exist that white is there to co-exist. It's because of his sacrifices that finally stop the never-ending cycle of coup. I'm glad that he never changed and got the peaceful life he always wanted. And oh, as a lover, he's a green flag. He's such loser lover, so down bad and helplessly in love.

Ming Huashang - A female lead that's not to be understimated. She's not talented in terms of four arts unlike other FLs of historical novels, nor does she have the strength in fighting. But when it comes to cleverness, watch out for her or you won't even know how you die. She's too empathetic, and it helps her solve cases but such talent is a double-edged sword because too much empathy can be so exhausting. She often comes off as lazy and weak, but the FL is definitely in the category of strong independent woman. She knows where she's strong and uses it to the fullest of her ability. In the struggle of power, she showed how a woman can also contribute to the world. Without her, ML might struggle even harder in solving cases and other life-changing decisions. Just as she rely and depend on him, he also depend and trust her ability. Most cases were solved with the FL's half conribution. And I love her powerful she became at the end of the novel, figuratively and literally (iykyk).

RY - Another powerful and independent woman in the novel. Her story really shows the struggles of a woman in ancient times where men dominated despite being ruled by a woman. Where men can inherent a title simply because they are a man and where women have to fight and give their all just to obtain little power. I was rooting for her as a woman too and glad it ended well for her.

JL - Another green flag!! He's definitely fighting for that top spot of being a green flag with the ML. I felt his character development the most. He comes off as a typical dandy man and I was not looking forward to his character but as the story move forward, out of all the characters, he definitely got that sincere and pure heart, just like how the ML evaluated him. Despite going through his own struggles and disappoinments, I'm glad his heart stayed the same. His character and his dynamic with Huashang and RY kept this story lighthearted to read.

XJ - He's a mystery to me. Until the end of the novel I felt like I've never truly known him. I don't if it's because the author didn't disclose much of his famly background and his story, but that's the vibes he give. He's such a complex character. If Huazhang is the white character, then XJ is the gray character. He's neither the hero nor the villain. He has his own principles that's totally opposite to Huazhang. If Huazhang would rather sacrifice his self than other people, then XJ would never wrong his self for the sake of other people. Such differences with Huazhang but is still friends with him. I used to doubt whether he's ever been sincere to him and I realized towards the end that he does. It's just his cold personality combined with Huazhang indifferent one too, that sometimes it's hard to see unless you deep dive into it. I think the perfect label for them is archenemies. They're hostile towards one another but never betrayed each other. Just to add, I lowkey ghost ship him with the FL. If this is another novel, then XJ is the ML that's cold, mysterious, and complex that would be soften and warm up by the cute, adorable, seemily weak but warm and clever FL. Huazhang definitely gives off the second male lead who's perfect in every way and is good to FL but still wasn't chosen lol. But it isn't so nevermind that because as the title say, Huazhang and Huashang are a match made in heaven.

Female Emperor Wu Zetian - I definitely don't know how to feel about her. History and reality aside, as a woman who was able to dominate in ancient times where men were treated superior, she's truly so admirable. But her tyranny and cruelty was chilling. I want to hate her for the deaths she caused but just like how Huazhang sees through the big picture, she also once governed a prosperous era under her ruling. Such a pity she had ended up like that all because of power.

Zhaocai - Damn, her death was so unexpected. I didn't see it coming. She's the only heavy loss of the female lead out of all her close loved ones. The four names of the maids will never be complete without her.

Duke of Zhen - A loving father. I really can't judge him for what he did. I can't say he's right, but I also can't say he's wrong either. In such a turmoil of power struggle, the best he can do was to sacrifice his child to keep the lives of the three children.

Su siblings - Great add to the team. I'm glad SY wasn't led astray and didn't become a villain.

But what surprised me in the end is none among the 3 main couples had a child lmao.

Overall, a 5/5 for me. If you're into romance, msytery solving, heavy politics, and is interested in Tang dynasty era ruled by the first Female Emperor of China, then this novel is very much recommended to read! <<less

One of the things that stood out to me most about this novel is how it diverged from the author's other works. Whereas many of the author's previous stories have centered around themes of betrayal by family, this narrative took a refreshingly different approach, focusing instead on the importance of friendship, family, and mutual understanding.

When I read the summary, I was intrigued by the dynamic between the court official male lead and how he would protect the female lead from the emperor. I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the "real" daughter, there were three mu*der cases after which, Su Yuji, appeared. However, Su Yuji remained unaware of the truth until around chapter 150.

One of the biggest reveals was that the female lead is actually the twin, and the male lead is the adopted son of the former second crown prince, who was killed by his own mother. The duke hid the male lead away, which was a fascinating twist. Despite this, I found myself unable to truly dislike the duke, as he sent money to care for the daughter he had sent away, and would even visit them periodically. It was a real eye-opener when he allowed both daughters to marry their "brothers, " even though both brothers (our ML and su ge) knew they were not actually blood-related from a young age like around age 4 both knew. Even Su Yuji was aware that her "brother" was not her real sibling at age around 2-5?.

While I was initially a bit annoyed when the female lead doted so heavily on her "real brother, " this was balanced out by the touching moments when she stayed by second brother's (ml) side, believing she would soon die. The tragic death of her maid, which seemed to occur in the female lead's place, added an extra layer of poignancy to the narrative. It felt as though her maid's sacrifice in some way offset the female lead's own untimely demise, making her eventual fate all the more bittersweet.

I felt bad for Xie Jichuan, who harbored a crush on the female lead, but was impressed that the male lead did not let this ruin their friendship, and Xie maintained appropriate boundaries after their marriage.

The different mu*der cases, from the "Snowy Night Banquet" to the "Empire Sunset, " each presented unique challenges and insights into the characters. I was particularly moved by the "Silk Doll/Puppet Doll" case, where the tragic yet sweet nature of people genuinely trying to protect their loved ones was highlighted. The "Heaven and Earth in Painting" case was both fascinating and humorous, while the "Resentment of the Buddha Who Leaving the Soul" case explored the complexities of a character driven to take innocent lives due to their upbringing."The curse of spirit snake" this case I felt both FL and ML are too relaxed they allowed mu*derer to kill under their eyes lolz but later I realised from their pov its not just that.

Lastly, I must express my disappointment in the previous life's male lead, who did not seek revenge for the death of the FL whom he had grown up with and the fl's killer his aunt whom he had never met, he was haunted by guilt and self-loathing, unable to forgive himself for not being strong enough to protect the ones he loved. His cowardice in that lifetime was frustrating, though I do feel sympathy for the duke. As for the Supreme Empress, while her efforts to identify and nurture talents benefited the common people, her later descent into tyranny towards her own family was a tragic end to her reign.

For the Supreme Empress, her quest for power and stability led her to make increasingly ruthless decisions.

Perhaps she could have started with good intentions - a desire to protect the empire and nurture talented individuals for the greater good. But over time, the burdens of rulership and the threats she faced could have slowly corrupted her, making her increasingly paranoid and willing to sacrifice anything to maintain her grip on power.

This internal struggle could have played out through difficult choices where she was forced to choose between her ideals and the harsh realities of governing. Maybe she had to decide whether to eliminate a talented but disloyal minister, or whether to suppress a populist uprising even if it meant more lives lost, making her ultimate downfall all the more tragic.

It’s an ok read. The synopsis is misleading. The focus of the novel is on resolving crimes with a court politic background. Not on romance, revenge or fake daughter trope although all those are presents and somewhat half baked. As such I felt it wasn’t well polished. Feels the novel was trying to integrate too many elements without successfully achieving one.

The novel is an interesting read and had a lot of potential but wasn’t well executed.

One of my favorite genre and not a common one. It's more like mystery or detective kind of story.

This is one of the rare gem. The story and plot is unpredictable, the pace is just nice. FL appears dull, lazy, and incompetent, but along the way she shows her strengths and draws the other characters to her side. She turns to be the one solving the mysteries with the help from the supporting characters. While ML is the typical perfect guy with heavy responsibilities on his shoulder. In the beginning,... more>> he is protective to the FL mainly because of his responsibility as big brother, but the feeling become more genuine as he becomes closer to FL.

I'm stopping reading at Ch 157 because I dislike where the story will go from there. It was great for so long as they were just dealing with mu*der mysteries, Scooby gang-style (there's even the Wei Wang who's basically an old white dude saying "I would have gotten away with this if not for these pesky kids!" - I'm almost quoting verbatim, by the way).

But, look, I don't like how the Emperor Wu is (going to be) depicted, and what I suspect is her ending. What she had done -... more>> at times tragic, monstrous, corrupt - but it was her who allowed Ming Huashang to be so involved in case solving, or Ren Yao to inherit her father's title. They both had talents, grit, bravery, commitment - and it would have been to naught it wasn't for the first, and only, Female Emperor. There wouldn't have been any female officials, much less female cops or female soldiers.

Tbh, I thought more than once, if only one of her children or grandchildren just took her surname... So much pain would have been avoided. It was what she (up to ch 157, I stopped reading when the
