The genius sorcerer of the Riyat Empire, Ashin Judin.

After a long war, she was casually enjoying a nap when the emperor issued an order.

“Now that the war is over, you have nothing else to do. Get married.”

The other person was someone Ashin knew well.

Commander-in-Chief, Leotard Van Mur, whom she had clashed with on even the tiniest things during the war.

‘Even though it’s a political marriage, is it fine to get married like this? It seems like it would be better to run away for now.’

However, Leotard, having made a deal with the emperor, had no intention of letting Ashin go…

“Whether you want it or not, running away isn’t an option.”

“We both don’t want it, so why should we go this far?”

“As long as you fulfill your marital duties, I wouldn’t ask for anything else. Not a child, not you.”

Ashin believed that they could maintain their married life without seeing each other for at least three years, but is that true?

‘Wait, merely fulfilling my duties is enough? If it’s about marital duties…’

Status: Completed
I have originally read the story in Korean, so my review will mostly be based on the plot, progression, characters, and themes. Overall, I enjoyed it. It is a refreshing read, and I'll find myself reading it again from time to time especially on my favorite arcs.

I discovered this novel in Ridi as it has the same author of North x Northwest, which I consider my first love. The author had a bit of foreword that says this novel, A Night Lying on the Sand, is both the same and... more>> different in the sense that it also has a strong and capable female lead, a supportive ML, and solid world building, but the themes are generally lighter, the elements of magic are more central, the character backstories are less heavy, but also still filled with character and couple growth. After all, that's what I dearly love about romance novels. I love it when the FL and ML work together, when they have each other's backs. Or when they save each other. It is always good to see, and I saw that a lot here.

Plot: It starts off as light.

Spoiler

In the first 10 chapters, all I knew was the FL and ML being in an arranged marriage for alliance purposes, that a long war just finished, that the ML needs to sort out issues in his hometown territory, and that the FL plans to embark on a journey to find traces of her theory about the main enemy's survival after the war. Towards chapter 29, an intriguing prophecy was seen by the FL, involving the ML and the main enemy. This foresight then sets the direction of the story, which was primarily the FL's quest to save the "world", or all living beings who can be potential victims of their enemy who's greedy for power.

From thereon, the story will be filled with adventure (mostly set in the desert and on different cities within the empire), action (sorcerers+soldiers battle against demons+enemy spiritists), and romance, all of which I found were in the right balance to further the plot.

While the story's themes are generally lighter than the author's preceding work, her writing style of the scenes, battle, love, and even just the nature scenes, remained vivid. Exhilirating for battles, enchanting for the nature descriptions, and really touching for the romance ones.

Characters & Relationships: Now, in this part, prepare for my rambling, especially in the spoilers tag. Lol. Both FL and ML are capable by themselves. But the author, like her previous work NorthxNorthwest, generally creates FLs who further grow through the solid support of the MLs. The main theme here is on the characters' growth as a couple. They were already acquainted even before the start of the story, being fellow commanders in the war. But after their arranged marriage, they stuck to their oaths and allowed love to blossom, leading to becoming one of the healthiest relationships I've ever read in romance-fantasy novels. The smut is also central in the sense that they built their intimacy through it.

FL: bubbly, straightforward, determined, highly skilled, but not OP (which I find great as it humanizes her). Head of the sorcerers' unit in the empire. In the following spoiler tag, I'd like to address some of the Korean readers' criticism of her:

Spoiler

A toxic trait of someone as capable as her is that she tends to deal with the most difficult and dangerous tasks by herself. This is her form of self-punishment for covering her guilt, for defying her village's traditions by using magic to kill, even causing a strain in her relationship with her mother. She eventually learned to ask help, lowering her pride to ask for help of her counterpart in the Temple, the more influential organization in the empire, to defeat their common enemy. However, their enemy in this story isn't ordinary anymore. He's an overpowered ancient being, brought back to life by the revival of his new disciples. Some readers expected that the FL should have been the one, personally, who defeated the enemy. But it turned out she wasn't. BUT her ideas caused the enemy's weakness, and the growth in her character (no longer looking to punish herself, but to move forward, acknowledging the love she receives from people who care about her) disabled the enemy's power source in the final battle. So she did her part in that sense, and the rest is all teamwork. I mean, the other units weren't there for nothing! I think that's what other people ignored, the fact that her character growth wasnt about personally defeating the enemy, but being a significant contributor in the enemys defeat by finally overcoming her own personal conflicts.

[collapse]

ML: reserved, strong. Not a red flag as he's not cold nor arrogant. He's rather cautious about potentially disrespecting the FL's wishes and tries his best to figure out her preferences.

Spoiler

However, for his character growth, he needed to learn to open up with her more as her partner. His growth in this aspect was also central to the plot. Now on the aspect of his abilities, I find it unfair that there isn't much criticism of him "being a burden" when it took a whole mission, led by the FL, to save him when he was kidnapped in one arc. All the Korean readers' criticisms were directed to the FL, on how she wants to take on missions alone, but end up getting herself severely injured. But none for the ML, even if he also experienced the same when in fact, there was an arc when the FL also rescued him. So was he any less capable? No, it's just that the plot needed them to grow as a couple, and to do that, there had to be plot points that prove they have each other's backs.

[collapse]

Enemy: Powerful, and rightly so.

Spoiler

The enemy is an ancient being who sucks up the life force of others to gain strength, earning him an unfair advantage. That's why it takes more than just the empire's brilliant sorceress to take him down. Reading the final battle scenes with this being truly made me worry for the characters I cared about. That's how threatening the story's villain was.

[collapse]

Tldr. It's an adventure-fantasy-romance story, with a bubbly FL and a reserved ML, who eventually learned to trust and mutually support each other in their individual, yet related quests. It is a light read, something you can read on lazy afternoons over coffee, yet also engaging enough to binge! <<less
