“Divorce… let’s do it,”

Eli stopped unbuttoning his shirt and looked at Ruby. It was a rare expression of surprise, and Ruby was just as shocked. She had blurted it out impulsively, and even she was surprised by her own words. While wondering what answer she would give if he asked for a reason, she quickly shook her head.

“In two weeks.”

“…What?”

Eli unbuttoned his shirt with a seemingly casual voice.

“I have some business to attend to in the capital, so let’s do it then. I’ll inform the Emperor in advance.”

“…”

“Write down what you want when we divorce. I’ll take care of it.”

His response was so clean and precise that it almost felt surreal. Surprisingly, it was Ruby who found herself at a loss for words. How foolish of her to think he would at least ask her reason for demanding a divorce.

“Okay,”

Ruby said with a lonely smile and left the room. On the day they divorced, Ruby died in a carriage accident.

***

She woke up in her first year of marriage. She thought it would be easy to divorce again this time…

“I sent a letter to divorce.”

“What?”

“It’ll be over quickly if you tell His Majesty……”

“No, Ruby. I have no intention of getting a divorce.”

He said with a tender voice and a face she had never seen before. The second divorce from her husband didn’t seem easy.

I guessed that men on this era are nothing but fools. They only regret once FL has gone. He did not even value FL while being with her, he tossed and just like that, he regret. Well, ML brought another woman to replace FL, yeah, he only hired her to tarnished his reputation but it only add to the foolishness.

No comment about MC, I am reading this just for Empress. I am more surprise with her story, and yeah Emperor just your generic cheating husband at first. But somehow I wonder why author still gives him some senses and dignity. He's kinda unlikely for me but acceptable.

Not my cup of tea. Same old red flag ML and weak-willed FL who declares that things will be different the second time around (but it's not) that Korean novels like to use. At this point, not sure if Korean novels are worth it. These types are dime-a-dozen.

Spoiler

The premise is that ML and FL got married because FL proposed and ML accepted. For him, it was a marriage of convenience and for her, she just wanted to be close to him. Cut to three years later, FL is trying super hard to live up to her position as his wife but a meddling mother-in-law causes her to be outcasted and disrespected by everyone. FL finally divorces ML but then dies and travels back to her first year of marriage. FL goes around saying that this time will be different but the first part of the novel is mainly ML. ML suddenly doesn't agree to divorce and starts 'chasing his wife to the crematorium'.

It doesn't make sense. It was a marriage of convenience. Even if he did return to the past as well, it doesn't make sense that he's suddenly in love with FL. For at least twenty chapters, we get a retelling of all the things ML is doing to make up for the past life. It was meant to be attractive and absolve him of any guilt, but I didn't find it romantic at all. He remained pretty inconsiderate of FL's feelings. He only did things that he thought would make FL love him again instead of asking her and talking to her. In fact, we don't actually get that much talking between ML and FL to begin with. It's just her asking for a divorce and him ignoring or talking around the issue. FL was the whole reason this novel started really but she ends up being a backdrop for ML and his adventures. She is wholely unaware of things going on around her and is as doormat as they come. A kinder way to put it would be timid and selfless -- sure¯_ (ツ) _/¯.

The translation wasn't the best. I've seen worse, but it can bother you if you pay attention. Mary and Marie are used interchangeably. There are some parts (especially in the beginning in FL's POV) that don't make sense until you read the other POV.

Clearly, I lost patience with the novel so do what you will with this information. I just think there are better, less brain damaging novels out there. <<less

I enjoyed the novel, but I believe the story could have been far more engaging if regression hadn't been a part of it. It would have been more compelling if Eli had realized his mistakes and taken action on his own after a year, rather than waiting three years for his wife's death and their divorce before gaining clarity and turn back time. In my opinion, the male lead should have been depicted as more intelligent and self-assured, capable of recognizing the issues within his family and dealing with Arlen.... more>> As for Arlen, her arrogance and narcissism made her downfall feel well-deserved in the end. <<less

First, the translation is okay but it is really bothersome with so many pronoun errors (he/she). Some parts don't even flow or makes sense. I have to reread to see who is speaking. It is machine translated with brief grammar check?

Second, the story backdrop is nice but there are many fillers imo. The characters' development are shallow. The FL Ruby is a door mat. In chapter 2, she is more of a boss and confident. However in later chapters, you just read perspectives of others around her. The ML is... more>> the main growth. He is a bastard but he thought he was being considerate of his love thinking she didn't love him. And in the first life he was a coward choosing to hide than see her physically dwindling.
Spoiler

Their story is one of misunderstandings worsened by his mother's schemes. The mother poisoned Ruby for years so she can't give birth. The antagonist, Arlene, is a narcissist wh8re, sleeping with the emperor [playing with his emotion] yet schemed so that the ML will marry her. She rejected the emperor's proposal years ago so he married another yet she still proceeded to sleep with him. Bc in her world, she gets everything she wants. So yes, she's a guilty adulterer who's bent on ruining RUBY too. Anyway the other point I'm baffled is how the ML fell in love with the FL since she asserted the proposal like a business transaction. She has no redeeming qualities so I'm shocked how the man every girl want suddenly fell love. I get the guilt grip over her death spurred his feelings but... It didn't convince me.

I don't think reviewer shinnace was reading the same story we read, or just didn't read far enough in.

Our MC, Ruby, was a timid, selfless thing and our ML, Eli, oblivious far too assuming. Just two idiots in love with many obstacles in their way. As soon as Ruby regresses, she bad b*tches her way outta there with Eli trailing after her soon after.

There's more to the story for our ML. While he may seem neglectful and indifferent, it's more of an Type A personality over-consideration and failure to communicate... more>> while also unquestionably trusting his family when he shouldn't have.

Overall, I've enjoyed Eli's regret and journey to right wrongs, Ruby's journey to find peace, and their journey together to find a love and affection that works for them.

Not to say this story didn't have its flaws, my main gripe being the unnecessary conflict with another country that seemed unnecessary to the overarching plot.

All in all, this story did elicit emotions from me such as tears and heartache. Sometimes you just wanna hurt so good, and this story did that for me.

Translator also did an above-average job with only a few minor mistakes. <<less

It was such a bittersweet, a beautiful love story. I think it’s intriguing, and it keeps me wondering how the plot will unfold.

The earlier chapters pained me so much. As I read, I felt so much emotions and cried. Reading about the stories of their past lives, you might feel that the husband is hateful at first but I recommend you give this novel a chance and keep reading.. The characters are not perfect individuals, but I think that what makes it realistic. They realized they're wrong, and they're struggling... more>> to be a better version of themselves. Well, I think this novel is all about second chances. It was such an enjoyable read for me!

There are some translation errors like how the other reviews have stated, but it was minor and still understandable for me. Thank you so much for the author and the translation teams for completing this novel~ <<less
