What is it that makes a man fall in love with a woman at first sight? Appearance? Aura? Wealth? No, when campus prince and gaming expert, student Xiao Nai first saw Bei Wei Wei, what made him fall in love was not her extraordinary beauty; but her slim and slender fingers that were flying across the keyboard and her calm and composed manner! Embarrassing, no?

At the same time, gaming expert Bei Wei Wei was on the computer methodically commanding a guild war and won a perfect and glorious victory despite being at a disadvantage; completely unaware of the fact that cupid is nearby.

Soon after basketball player; swimmer; all-around excellent student; and game company president, Xiao Nai, uses tactics both on- and offline to capture this beauty’s heart. Therefore this romance slowly bloomed.

I've actually finished reading this one a long time ago, around last year to be exact, and just realized now that I haven't written a review (how slow!). The first one I read was Lil' Bliss translation, and only far later I found Dreams of Jianghu's work when I was reading another novel there. Aside of the similar plot, both have drastically different flavor. Both are great and could be said as excellent representation of the original novel, but the nuances each one created were distinctively unique, which just goes... more>> to show how translator's insight and presentation might influence readers' perception toward translated novels. Overall, doesn't matter whose translation, this novel was one with undebatable 5+ star in my mind and had became the cornerstone by which I measured many other pop romance novels, so there's basically nothing I could say except "perfect". It started off with a "bang" and ended with a lot of fireworks. It had solid world construct (including the fictional game that I wish someone will make for real), solid plot, solid characters, irresistible hooks, and great narrative conveyed at just the right pace.

If there's weakness that might make people dislike this novel, then it's probably have something to do with the novel's readership target. Its sugary content were fairly high, so perhaps people who would prefer unsweetened novels might find much to be desired. Additionally, although the MC love interest's perfection is something desirable among shoujo/josei readers, some other people might find it hard to swallow that. <<less

A Slight Smile is Very Charming is the story that Really, Really Miss You could have been. The setting is also similar to Black Belly Boss, Don't Run, while it shares the same universe and author as Come and Eat, Shan Shan but the pacing was better and the characters developed their relationship more and gradually fell for each other.

Taking place in an MMORPG, the female lead is ditched by her in-game husband when she encounters her idol/the top ranked PK and he proposes marriage. Working together and interacting with him and his team, they fall for each other in-game and arrange to meet offline. The MC then realizes that her current in-game husband is also her idol in real life and they begin dating and working together offline as well. Throughout the story they also handle trolls and various antagonists.

The story is actually quite simple, however their interactions were quite charming and you could feel the development between the two characters as they don't just rush into love. The female lead is cute but sensible and holds a strong position in-game, although she appears slightly more introverted offline. While the male lead also has a rather dark sense of humour but unlike Shan Shan, this is mostly aimed towards people aside from the female lead.

I also liked how the characters had a clear distinction between game and reality, with the MC above using her real life appearance to compete within the game, and clashing with people irl just because of their feuds online – something I found quite dignified. They're not, however, above revenge in game.

Their interactions offline was a touch more stifled though – but mostly because they didn't have quests and supporting characters to help their relationship grow through non-conversational means (while the author spent a lot more time on their in-game wedding than their actual one...). The talks they did have were a lot better than RRMY and improved and became more playful over time.

[collapse]

E: Since watching the drama, the flaws in this series have become more obvious. While there was always something a little lacking in their interactions (both are introverts), you realise that the ML is constantly taking breaks from his more interesting career to make sure his girlfriend isn't being bullied both in game and irl.

The characters and their dialogue are still charming, making it easy to fall into the story, but everything seems a little too sweet and idealistic when placed in a real world setting.

In terms of translations, the Lil' Bliss version is easier to read as it conveys the overall meaning, while Dreams of Jianghu spends more time explaining the specific references. Both translators did a really good job though.

Just one part of the entire thing was enough to sum up my feelings for the story:

“If I knew there would be a day I would love you this much.

I would definitely fall in love with you at first sight.”

... more>> If I knew this story was going to be that good, I would have read it early on. Something I needed to read after all the unfinished, cliched stuff on the site. It’s also nice to understand where the Dreams of Jianghu translation name came from.

Attractive story without the bumps and problems associated with other stories. Just One Smile Is Very Alluring (I’ll call it by what Dreams of Jianghu calls it) is a story that gives the relationships at the beginning and keeps at it. Not a long story, not a short one, just enough that we want more yet understand that there won’t be more...

I’m now on to reading the bonus chapters... ton of them... guess the author also felt the need to expand the world?

I would give 4/5 but I know that would just be because I wanted more... So yea, 5.

Also, for people a bit turned off about the MMORPG aspect of it... IT'S A XUANHUAN MMORPG!!! Lots of xuanhuan and immortal terms and I found myself really wishing to play it. Different from TKA where the book makes the game exciting, this story has an exciting game in general... <<less

This is my hands-down all time favorite C-Novel! Thank you to all the wonderful translators!

I loved Wei Wei Yi Xiao so much that this was the first C-Novel I read in the original Chinese, despite my low reading proficiency!! What I did was I copied and pasted portions into this pinyin translator (pin1yin1. com) so I could read it aloud and see dictionary translations for certain words and phrases... it took a tiny bit of devotion but I did it!

I have only played one MMORPG once in my life, when... more>> I was in middle school (so like 11-13 years old), which was zOMG! on gaiaonline. I am not sure if anyone has ever heard of it... It was an online no-download game, and it was a lot of fun, where I could fight bosses and team up if I wanted, so I had some basic intuition for the basic character roles on typical MMORPGs, like "tanks" and "healers" and stuff. Since that time, I have never played any more games, but I think that was enough for this novel's premise to get me hook, line, and sinker. I think Wei Wei Yi Xiao is really genius.

I mean, obviously, this is not "high art" or whatever, since the main characters are super perfect and you're just like here vicariously for the titillating romance (WHAT a romance this is, though! Da Shen! You manipulative genius! First love is a SLAM DUNK!).

Slightly off topic to review the live action franchise: About two weeks ago, I finally discovered that they made a movie and drama series since the last time I (re) read this, and I nearly reincarnated in excitement. I've seen the movie like three times now (LMAO yes. and props to Angelababy, this is my first time seeing her act and she well exceeded my expectations... which were admittedly low due to prejudice over her exceedingly pretty face and the hot novel-turned-live-action-franchise e_e please see: Horikita Maki). I also stayed up painfully to finish the drama series, despite how slow it was (this is like the Twilight of China, LMAO! need to drag that popular YA romance out and milk it for all its worth!!!), and this is my first time seeing Yang Yang, and omggg what kind of Chinese Apollo on earth!!! He too, exceeded my expectations. He nailed Xiao Nai. Also, no one else can act otherwordly and arrogant enough other than Yang Yang for Nai He Da Shen. WATCH, MY FELLOW WEI WEI YI XIAO FANS! <<less

She is beautiful, he is beautiful.

She’s smart, he’s a genius.

She’s the best female player, he’s the best male player.

Etc.

Ok, they meet, they love and... well, not much. The game part could be interesting but it’s not developed. Their personality is nonexistent, they are very generic characters. Some side characters are better.

The plot is not really exciting either. So it’s not that it’s a bad story, but I found it quite boring. It seems Chinese romances are not for me.

This is my first read on chinese novel. I'm grateful that I read this instead of something else.

Thank you to the translator who translate this.

A simple as this story is, and as sickening sweet the romance is, it was not a typical college romance.

... more>> With a slight of twist, I was unveiled with a creepy, dark, stalker-ish ML (whose fall in love with dancing fingers) and an unsuspecting deer that was about to be trapped, FL.

There's two part in this story.

First, when the ML still haven't caught the FL and was being a total handsome creep that follows her around campus. He actually got her to agree to marry him in the game.

Second, when the ML 'forcefully' made FL accept him and was being an over the top boyfriend that might even be a 'loving' wolf. He actually got her to agree to marry him in real life.

Although, I read some mixed review about this novel. On how the story went downhill after they met in real life (not playing the game much after that) and the drama did not fully capture the novel essence with the additional of unnecessary side character screentime.

I like it though. Absolutely loving the three stooges - Yu Gong, Hou Zi Jiu and of course, Mei-ren. <<less

Simple story with very simple plot. It has no major antagonist and no major drama. It flows really well. I liked the MC. She is someone you can associate with. Not too talkative and comes off as a bit love struck and s*upid at times (even though she is intelligent) . But she is a normal and hardworking girl. She doesn't like to flaunt her good points and likes to lead an easy life. The main lead has a bit of a dark side but is an overall likable... more>> character. He is OP like all male leads of shoujo genre. They fell in love with no major obstruction to their relationship. The side characters are amusing too. And the side storys are really funny.I really enjoyed reading it. It's one of those books where you don't have to wonder about the conspiracies and the nail biting drama. It has a light hearted slice of life flow. If you are here for some exciting read with loads of action and drama then this is not for you. If you are here for some light hearted read that gives you fluffy warm feeling then I recommend this to you. <<less

A modern Chinese story about a handsome, perfect guy that is a Computer Science College Student x a beautiful girl that is also a Computer Science College Student and how they got together through an online game.

I’m not particularly fond of online games novels. But I decided to read it because of the high rating.

However, I didn’t like this novel because...

Spoiler

I found the novel very confusing...

Spoiler

... with various characters names and players nicknames, a lot of game terms, internet slangs, and jargons of Wuxia (a genre of novel that depicts adventures of martial artists in ancient China).

So it was hard for me to catch up with the novel, so the reading wasn’t so pleasant.

Maybe that’s more my fault than the fault of the Novel, since I don’t speak Chinese and I’m not so knowledgeable of online games terms and Wuxia stories. Or maybe I’m too dumb? Because the translator created a side note explaining all those unfamiliar terms and I still had difficulty to understand...

[collapse]

I also don’t like the main couple very much.

Spoiler

About the male lead, Xiao Nai...

Spoiler

... because the story for me it was one of those annoying Chinese novels with an ultra super duper perfect male lead that makes everyone drool over. Rich (have his own company at young age), handsome, extremely smart (won dozens of awards in IT even though rarely shows up in college), good at sports (basketball and swimming), proficient in music (guzheng) and good at strategy games (go game)...

They even say in the novel: “Xiao Nai was akin to God”... the only thing missing is that he didn’t have a temple or his own religion, so people could keep worshipping him.

I can even understand that perfect characters can exist in fictional novels.

But what annoys me the most, is how the author needs to highlight the awesomeness of the guy over and over in each chapter that he appears.

I would not get surprise if from the 48 short chapters of the novel, half of it would be only filled with phrases complimenting the godly male lead. Argh 🙄

[collapse]

About the female lead, Bei Wei Wei...

Spoiler

... I feels that she was a flower vase (extremely beautiful and that’s it). I know that she was a good online game player and reasonable smart college student. But she was far as being so good like male lead. Which annoys me... like, why she couldn’t have some perfection at least to counterbalance with the godly male lead?

Since, despite being a good gamer, she wasn’t as good as male lead, despite being smart she couldn’t compete with the genius male lead. And while she was playing the online game, eating with her parents while on vacation, he was all busy building the frame of his own online game in his company.

Why we can’t have a female lead as powerful and capable as him?

[collapse]
[collapse]
[collapse]

But, my favorite part of the story is...

Spoiler

... actually the play they stage in the game. The story of the mountain bandit and the musician. As female lead being the bandit that kidnapped the musician male lead, because she falls in love with him. But in the end, the musician was a disguised law official that kills her. In the end, while he reminiscent about their past, he notices how he also loved her.

There’s even a real youtube video about that story... and the best part is at the 19 minutes... where he’s remembering him playing a song while she’s dancing with her sword...

【剑网三】白衣红影(剧情向) 微微一笑很倾城

[collapse]

Anyway, I encourage people to read the novel and decide for themselves if the story is good or not... <<less

I've read a lot. A LOT. Of Chinese novels over the years. This story is still, hands down, my most favourite modern-day novel. And the reasons I enjoy it so much is because the main leads are really intelligent. They are very very mature about relationships, and not being petty. They know when to fight and when to let things go. And I just love that although both leads were written as smart and gorgeous and well-versed, they're still humans. The guy has some black belly moments and the girl... more>> also has her cute boy-crazy moments hahaha.

The only complain I have is that the story is quite short, I finish it in one day. Then went on to watch the movies and the series and LOVE both adaptations. I'd recommend this novel for those who just start tapping into C-novel world. It's a good starter. It's light, well-written, heart-warming, but has some cultural references you can get yourself accustomed.

Oh, beware of the side stories though if you're not into boys' love hehehehe. <<less

Characters were bland for me. This felt like reading Twilight to be honest - where suddenly ML & FL are together and super in love even if they haven't really had any foundation of how they would come to feel that way in such a short span of time. But they both look good and so loving that everyone else in the fictional universe just goes "eh, they're perfect together".

It feels like one of my high school fantasies where suddenly the hot guy from school decides that I'm the most... more>> beautiful girl he's ever seen and he can't live without me. Rating 2/5 because it is not my cup of tea (at this age). But then again, this all boils down to purely personal preference.

I can see why people would like it - it's easy to immerse yourself as one of the characters because their personalities were not as clearly defined and generic. Fluff is there too.

But personally didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I found myself just skimming some of the chapters instead of wanting to savor every single sentence (which is how I usually gauge how much I enjoy a novel). <<less

Breezy and fun. A cute, sugary romance that starts off in the MMORPG and fuses with real life. What I liked was the portrayal of the female MC - she is pretty badass in the game and can stand up for herself when needed. In real life though, she comes across as a little more timid and at times lovestruck/clueless. But I like how she is a private person, not wanting to use her outstanding looks to gain an upper hand. Even with her relationship with Xiao Nai, she doesn't... more>> feel the need to be over expressive/talkative. Xiao Nai is well, perfect lol. Although I do feel he is depicted as too perfect - some flaws would have brought out more of a... ahem, flavour? I don't know - for example, Feng Teng (and his smart tongue) from the Shan Shan series seems more real to me. I love him all the same. So yes, if I could have asked for more from this series, it would be that Xiao Nai be made more believable in some way. I would have also liked to see some more Xiao-Wei combined badassery in the game.

I watched the TV Drama as well and was stoked they stuck to the book so much - enjoyed that as well. <<less

A great read very light romance, well paced novel excluding the fast wrap up end. If you liked the novel you might also like the drama adaptation Love 020. But be warned it is different from the book in the sense that there is a lot more malice involved to make it 30 episodes worthy. Still well made but not the same enjoyment as reading the novel.

This novel is a gem. As one reviewer said, this story may seem dull and ordinary to others as it has no plot twists, major obstacles, or hateful antagonists. But these things are what endeared the novel to me. I simply love its lack of drama and angst; I have read enough of those, so this is actually a breath of fresh air. I especially love the characters' (both main and side characters) interactions with each other both inside and outside the game. The book is funny and sweet. I honestly only read it since I watched the drama obsessively. It has a nice plot but I would have definitely liked it if it went into greater detail of what happens in their daily life. Good fluffy novel and definitely enjoyed it. There were no brainless villains or major misunderstandings and all the characters resolved conflicts maturely. Definitely recommend for anyone who is after a light hearted read full of fluff and cuties.

What worked:

    • MMORPG based romance story
    • Mature and likable protagonists
    • Start ups!
    • No tacky hacking scenes
    • No unnecessary dramas, very relaxing
    • Realistic start up environment (with some exceptions I will write below)
Now, the cons. I'm a female software engineer, a gamer, and I'm also working in the tech industry. I can easily relate to MC and ML. The cons are mostly nitpicky rant. You can ignore it, but I just can't help myself :p.

The CONS (mostly nitpicks) :

    • MC is in computer science major, but never seems to write code. And she learn stuff by reading BOOKS.
    • ML is too perfect. Genius programmer, very good at sports (won a regional competition!) like swimming and basketball. Maybe I've seen too many genius programmers that barely wash and mostly out of shape :'D
    • Some technical NGs like:
        • Releasing a game of such a large scale in 2 years (or was it a year?), especially when you build the game engine yourself. With the amt of programmers they have (4? 6?), realistic time line would be ML and MC got married, have 2 kids, and they're just done with the game engine. THEN they can get started with Dream of Jianghu 2.
        • Adding new feature on-the-fly (MC's suggestion!) during QA stage and so near release date. Forget new features, you'd be lucky if your games have no bugs.
        • While Dream of Jianghu 2 sounds like a dreamland, it's near impossible to provide both web support and desktop support for a massive scale games. At the same time. There's a reason you don't see massive 3D games doing this. Beside insta-killing lots of web user's PCs with the amount of computing power needed (beautiful graphic!) it's also cost prohibitive.
        • and other stuff... but who am I kidding? It's a romance novel. Nobody expect it to be perfect! :D

The story is great. It's relaxing, thrilling and funny. At first I was worried about how the relationship between Wei Wei and Xiao Nai, and I also think they progressed really fast. But surprisingly, it didn't gave the story a negative effect and even added to its own uniqueness and charm. I don't have any complaints with the characters and stuffs because, really, everything seems perfect for me. ≪3

These are the things I absolutely love in this story:

1. Xiao Nai's character and humor

... more>> 2. The game setting, developmemt and details

3. Lovable supporting characters

4. A mix of sweet, cute and hotness in one

5. Amusing side stories

Also, I wished for more side stories. And hopefully, I want to read more about Wei Wei and Xiao Nai's adventures in-game.

P. S.

Personally, I believed the Little Rain Clan deserves to suffer a bit more humiliation. Lol <<less
