God: “I’ll lie to this guy and tell him that I reincarnated him as the protagonist, when actually I just reincarnated him as cannon fodder (LOL).”

A high school boy who longed for the protagonists that appeared in fiction got hit by a truck and died. He was then called before God, who told him that he will be reincarnated inside a game based on a novel. Our boy was happy to be told that he was going to be reincarnated as Protagonist… However, he was actually reincarnated as mere cannon fodder inside utsuge!! (T/N: Utsuge translates as “melancholy/depressing game” and that’s basically it.)

And so, the guy was played by god’s scheme … Well, such a thing didn’t happen though. He firmly held onto his belief and the vision of his ideal which then changed the world.

The story itself gets 5/5 from me, but I have to take some points off for translation quality and other issues. Fei is a great character.

The main MC, Rei, is somewhat similar to Makoto from Zero Goddess Believer and Kamijou Touma from Toaru in the way he fights with a sixth sense. Rei appears weak initially, but becomes very strong and has a IDGAF attitude to moods and authority. He has a strong self-suggestion put on himself by him that he is a protagonist, it is normal for protagonists to... more>> get injured and almost die, it is normal for unreasonable stuff to happen, protagonists should standout and be cool, double edged techniques are cool for protagonists, protagonists should be strong mentally etc. As a result of this strong self-suggestion, he is immune to mind based and evil eye attacks. He also trains a lot and I mean a lot.

Rei's never give up attitude, high pain tolerance, and berserker-like fighting style, and peerless mentality is great. Most people see him like demon incarnate or avenger when he fights. Rei has a history of traumatizing his opponents. The gods also livestream his activities and have 4chan-like forum every volume towards the end of the volume. We also see events from Fei's perspective at the end of the volume.

Rei's best quotes:

I feel like modern Japanese ethnics have gone somewhere... well it's this kind of situation. Modern ethics don't suit fantasy protagonists. -Monologue in Volume 2 after slashing Terror's eyes and limbs

"Hypocrisy with Kindness is better than Kindness without action. There were people saved by you here." Said to Maria in Volume 2.

The girls in the harem are also unique in their own ways, they each have their own motivations and traumas. In the original novel based game, the scenario writer was known to be a miser who wrote bittersweet endings like a sadist. Due to the irregularity that is Rei, these bad ends are changed into better outcomes. The male characters also get a fair amount of characterization like True, who is the novel's original protagonist. True also has his own harem, but is even denser than Rei.

Harem so far for Rei

Maria (25) - the Sister of Rei's orphanage and is a former holy swordswoman. She sees Rei similar to her younger self in being avengers. She pays extra care to him and Rei sees her as the main heroine candidate throughout the novel due to it. She has two personalities inside her and Rei is one of the only people to unconsciously realize it. Strongly attached to Rei. Another young boy who is blinded from an injury named Lele in the orphanage sees Rei as a father figure and Maria as the mother figure, hence he tries to set them up together. Slept together with Fei a lot (non-sexual). Fei's first heroine.

Secret with Maria

Spoiler

WN: Lillia's village was attacked by bandits and her mother Maria hid her in a closet. She was then found by an evil knight and held captive when she was a little girl. Confinement, Torture, R*pe, Gore, Human Experiments. Then she was rescued by a holy knight named Margaret who uses magic to erase Lillia's memories to become Maria. her new village is attacked by monsters and her mother Margaret is killed, so Maria becomes an avenger to kill monsters. Maria/Lillia's oppressor shows up again, but is taken care of by Fei who cuts his arms off and slashes his eyes to permanently blind him. The rest of events afterward more or less follow the LN.

LN: Lillia's village was attacked by hypnotized monsters by a mad scientist lady named Terror. Her mother Maria also hid her in a closet, but she was discovered by Terror. Confinement, Torture, and Human Experiments. Then she was rescued by a holy knight named Margaret who uses magic to erase Lillia's memories to become Maria. her new village is attacked by monsters and her mother Margaret is killed, so Maria becomes an avenger to kill monsters. Terror shows up again to kidnap Maria, but gets her eyes slashed and arms cut by Fei, then smashed her head onto the floor creating cracks. Fei avoiding killing her due to the possibility of the orphanage kids being traumatized.

Analysis: Due to this she has dual personalities of Lillia (young village maiden girl) and Maria (former swordswoman and sister). Maria/Lillia's oppressor shows up again, but is taken care by Fei who cuts Terror's limbs off and slashes her eyes. Fei gives Maria a red and blue hair ornament to symbolize the dual personality. As a result, Lillia's ego does not disappear and both personalities co-exist while Fei acts like a stabilizer for them. Maria worries about her age and age gap at times, but Lillia vows to never to give up on Fei and is the most aggressive romantically of the two. Maria wears the red hair ornaments, while Lillia wears the blue hair ornament. If Fei gives them a single gift, then Maria and Lillia fight over it.

Interestingly enough if you average the mental ages of Maria (25) and Lillia (14~), you get Fei's age although he is a reincarnator so his actual mental age is much higher than both combined. In the original novel setting, Lillia's ego disappears and Maria is the only ego left, so her romance route is effectively a dead end.

Removing the r*ape from the LN version was probably for the the best because as other commentators have said, r*pe is a an easy way to get shock value from readers and moreover it is too excessive when you add confinement, gore, torture, human experiments to the mix. It tilts the novel too dark and makes Maria the undisputed tragic heroine in a harem genre.

Spoiler

Yururu (23) - Fei's swordsmanship teacher in Namikaze style. He risked his life to save her from being exiled. He treats her love gestures as hints and foreshadowing for future trials (lol). Former noble lady. She has withdrawal symptoms if she does not see Fei for a long time. Fei's 2nd heroine.

Mei (23~) - Yururu's former maid in the noble house. She is similar to Fei in that they both think they are protagonists. Mei thinks of herself as a protagonist in a romance novel and has vivid fantasies about herself and Rei.

Arthur (17) - the koala panda rival character for Rei. Self-proclaimed girl friend/expert on Rei due to her love. Although she is very bad at communication so Rei often sees her like a panda-like rival (reference to Ranma 1/2). She is very bad at naming things like naming Fei's skills like Snake Attack and Fei Punch.

Mordred (17~) - the dolphin rival character for Rei. Has an obsession for Rei due to his avenger type of fighting style. She sleeps naked. Obsessed with Fei's hard muscles.

Potential Harem for Rei

Spoiler

Bowlan (15-16) - half-human and half beastkin born from a human mother and beastkin father. She was exiled from her beastkin village after her parents died and left to die in the wilderness. She was initially stuck up in the first volume, but after some time she cooled down and is quite friendly. Bowlan sticks with Rei a lot since sticking with him means free food and she generally like him.

Alpha, Beta, Gamma (16~) - triplet sisters who think Rei might be an avenger like them. Rei saved Beta from a drunkard and left without a word, so Beta has a bit of a crush.

Alicia (14) - True's the original protagonist in the novel game and Alicia is his younger sister in a side story event. Alicia tags along with Rei in the dungeons and sort of became attached. Outsiders think of their relationship like a stoic older brother and their clingy younger sister. Rei saved her a couple times.

Heimi (14) - A village girl that Rei saved from a villain with evil eyes. Rei protected her dignity (she wet herself and Rei carried her on his back to hide it until she was inside her home). She vowed to become a knight like him. Potential first disciple for Rei.

Now for the bad. The navigation system at the translator's site is abysmal. You cannot copy and paste or open new hyperlink windows in a new tab due to restrictions. As a result, you cannot copy and paste paragraphs or phrases from the chapter into the comments to bring attention to errors. Clicking the next chapter within the site leads to the ko-fi page even for older chapters. It really needs an overhaul.

Also, there are terminology issues in various chapters. Fei can be Faye, True to Tru, Rururu to Ruru, etc. Pronouns for characters are sometimes off like characters like Arthur. Terminology can change without notice like Daemon to Abyss in other chapters. I recommend a terminology guide page for that novel and a thorough proof reader.

The age gap between characters might not be for everyone, but a 7-10 year age gap is fairly common in the rest of the world. Males tend to be much older than their women due to establishing themselves in their careers, buying a house, and completing mandatory military service. Or women in modern times for nearly the same reasons above. I personally have a 5-6 year age gap with my wife and my younger sister has a 7-8 year age gap with her husband. <<less

It started ok, liked the premise of a deluded protagonist everybody else misunderstands. But the part where his instructor gained romantic feelings for her student (the protagonist) gave me the ick.

To be fair I barely remember their age gap. I barely remember the characters names. I barely remember the other details except for the main point that a Goddess (?) Tricked him into thinking he's a hero and that's his motivation. But I don't feel motivated to re-read it.

I know its too early at just 19 and 2/4 or so... more>> chapters. (Its divided into parts) but there isn't enough of a hook to keep me motivated especially with the volume 1 and even volume 2 being so generic.

Still dont let my jaded opinion sway you too much first time readers should always give a book a chance.

Also would help you to keep this page open to be able to open choppies from this index. Next page on website does not go to the next chapter but to the paid chapter blocked pages.

Translation quality is pretty nice. There are many consistent gendering errors like the main Character who is male being referred to as female/her. But who knows might be deliberate with all the madness going on about "genders" at present. But overall its easy to read and understand. <<less

It's a pretty interesting take on the "reincarnated into a game world" trope.

When the MC met the goddess in charge, she told him he would be reincarnated into a character of a certain game (a dark, hardcore game, apparently, where every choice might lead to someone's death). He never played the game but knew about this one character because he was voted as "the best character" of this very popular game (only because people were trolling). Consequently, he mistakenly thinks that the character is the hero of the story while... more>> he's actually a cannon fodder third-rate villain. The bored goddess finds it very funny and let him believe he's the hero.

The mistaken Fey (the MC) then starts his life in this new world with a very clear idea of what character he wants to play: a dark, lonesome, stone-faced hero. Because of that there's a great disparity between his behavior and his actual thoughts, which is often funny.

Furthermore, not knowing the plot but knowing it's a game world, he constantly (wrongly) interprets what's happening around him based on his general knowledge of game plots, on the premise that he is the hero of this world and that it's a shounen-like world (so he thinks he can't die ^^'). He misunderstands the actual hero as a third-rate villain or a sidekick, the main heroine as his rival, etc. And everything his teacher (who is in love with him) does is interpreted by him as being some kind of special way of teaching him some profound theory about fighting...

Sometimes the pace is not that great, the plot-armor is strong (but mostly funny), but I generally find the contrast between the original very dark plotline of the game and the absurd comedy it turns into after Fey gets involved quite enjoyable most of the time.

It's not really a serious story and the MC is basically "playing a character", which means he has little to no attachment to the people around him (because they are just game characters in his mind), still, because he thinks of himself as an absolute shounen hero, he won't let anyone die or anything like that, so he's still likeable.

I quite enjoy it. <<less
