So far I'm a bit disappointed - I'm on chapter 21 on the first case (the missing relic) :

- its written like a mu*der mystery in a classic "whodunnit?" : we have a specific scene, we have a specific cast of people, some have elements of response etc. So I thought it was interesting. Except that the important information are withdrawn for us the reader. And the culprit is someone who was not here, not there and just completely come from nowhere. And all is revealed in a big "ahah,... more>> everything you knew was false" which is normal as information were not shared. I felt a bit cheated on the mystery.

It's really a shame for me because the rest is quite fun.

- the banter between our 2 protagonist is quite funny and they're shamelessly flirting (even if its not really flirting)

- the different character are enjoyable and well defined.

- its not over the top and quite subdue in their capacities and potential which is a nice change <<less

This novel is really good. I read it twice, unfortunately the description of this novel is very bad, like any other by this author. MC is a sick person who spends most of his life in search of in kind of rare medicinal herb that is the only thing that can cure the poison in his body, ML takes advantage of this by deceiving MC with the sole intention of getting his help in finding the stolen relic. It's interesting how ML regrets this attitude after he and MC fall... more>> in love and become a very cute couple. Many thing happen, the story changes a lot, the romance here is secondary, but it becomes more and more interesting. The ending is a little sad, the extras are very good. I found this story by accident while receiving a comic email blast, I always believed that a novel that was made into a comic would have a unique value so I tried to read the novel first, and I wasn't disappointed.

The author goes straight into the story without rambling.

This is a story about detective and comedy, I am very curious feels like reading detective conan,

... more>> the comedy makes me laugh, it's so funny.

This is a new story concept for me, the writer is good at bringing the atmosphere, makes me curious.. guessing and confused,

there are lots of tactics and plot twists, all well structured.

Scene shifts are also neat, there are cases to solve in each chapter, all mysteries flow to one end, puzzle pieces that we must collect where the last piece turns out to be at the beginning of the story without us realized it

CHARACTER

in this story the main character doesn't fall in love right away, they grow slowly because they are dependent on each other at first

a love that grows without you realizing it, when you realize everything is already hard to separate

Yun Yifeng never felt love, always struggled alone and finally he felt cared by Ji Yanran, felt what family was and he was willing to give anything for this love

Ji Yanran from childhood forced to be independent and persistent because of the state of the kingdom, always thinking about the interests of the country... and finally love grows slowly

because the sense of responsibility and guilt to Yun Yifeng develops into deep love

SUPORTING CHARACTER

I like the character Li jun who at first I thought the villain turned out to be a funny character and developed into a responsible character

Jiang Ling Fei, Very cute and interesting characters, but who know there's a lot of mystery behind him

Mu Cheng Xue, cool and very professional vegetarian killer with his favorite fat mink

Lao Thai Fei, Ji Yanran mother, very open minded women in her era, full of love and so brave. She can accapted Yun Yifeng with Ji Yanran relationship and give Jiang Ling Fei love that he never know

Li Jing a good and responsible emperor, unselfish and always thinking of solutions, without worrying about his own ego

EXTRA

there are 3 extras, in the second extra provides a little answer to the sadness at the end of the story,

even though everything is not clear but at least it makes you feel calm <<less

I really love this novel! The story is very good. MC and ML are so adorable together. I hope that someday I will have the complete translation, because this is one of the best novels by this author.

This is a pretty interesting novel.

This is a sickfic, so be warned, the MC is going to be a bit weak in the beginning but he is no damsel-in-distress. His progress is very detail-oriented and fulfilling.

There is a balance between the main couple's strength and weaknesses. It is not your typical "overpowered MC to a point that surpasses the plot's settings" type of novel since that's a commonly seen trope in xianxia and political settings.

my pov: I don't why this novel doesn't get more traction since it clearly has the potential. It needs the right audience, I suppose.

So, if you're into xianxia and court politics novels, and want to avoid overly cliche storylines with the protagonist halo shining brighter than the sun itself, then this is for you.

The first time I read this novel, I thought the story would be like in Missing Relic and 18 Villa, but it was a disappointment because the story will really change a lot. First of all, the romance is very slow and basically there is no romance at all. In the Secret Map of Zichuan is where to start the story of General Lu and from then on the story will change completely, with long and boring chapters, MC and ML basically disappear, you wait will for an interaction between... more>> the two. And when the author remembers that MC is dying, solves everything in two chapters, very emotionless. The ending is disappointing, I was very sad how the author is unfair to Jiang Lingfei's character. This is a novel where I loved the whole journey more than the ending. The whole story is full of mysteries and speculations, which made the plot so intriguing and so engaging. You'll be guessing who's the mastermind behind everything, what really happened in the past and what strong motivation the group of antagonists have that pushed them to start the chaos. You'll be slowly uncovering all the secrets along with the MC and ML and this is what makes the plot so fascinating.

Both the MC and ML... more>> are powerful in their own right, as Yun Yifeng being the sect master of Feng Yu Sect and Ji Yanran being the Imperial Prince and the youngest general that guarded the border, both having high martial arts skills and also both clever. But they are not exactly overpowered characters either. They actually are a few steps behind the antagonists most of the time, and it makes them more realistic that way.

The first two arcs are like a detective style, mu*der solving set up, which is really fascinating. But the more they solve the cases, the more they discovered that everything is converging into something from the past, and that's where the involvement of the imperial court, the Jianghu and even the MC's true birth origin started.

A stolen artifact and the MC's hope of finding a very rare medicinal herd that could potentially cure the deadly poison inside his body, these are what makes the MC and ML find each other. The relationship between the two started from gaining benefits with each other's help to a deep-seated love. I loved that the progression of their interaction felt so smooth and natural. All the little things the ML did for the MC were done as if it were the most natural thing in the world and the tacit understanding between them is unparalleled. I absolutely loved the relationship between them.

Though the actual conclusion of the final battle is a bit underwhelming for me, it surely tied all the loose ends properly. The reveals are mixed of expected and unexpected which makes the ending feel more balanced. Having an underwhelming ending didn't mean that this is not worthy because as I said, the whole journey is so much fun. This novel is actually really good overall. It's just that after all the build up, the way the conclusion of the battle dropped is not as satisfying as I want it to be. But then, the story isn't only define with its ending, so I would not rate this novel lower than this just because of the underwhelming ending confrontation.

Still highly recommended because of the mysteries, the overall plot, the couple's interactions and all the interesting and likeable side characters. <<less

Excellent cultivation danmei with a lot of mu*der mystery elements and with a good account of the politics of ancient times, without drama, exaggeration or oversentimentality. It is very well written (and translated) with a solid plot and a cast of coherent and rational characters.

Interesting beginning with the protags and a few others holed up on a remote snowy mountain with a killer on the loose. The protags are forced to be detectives and solve some pretty horrific cases. Being cultivators, one would expect them to solve the mystery with... more>> a click of the fingers but it isn't the case... they are not OP and mostly have to rely on their detective skills, their IQ, EQ, friends, family, connections, knowledge and good old martial arts to do their job.

The general pacing and atmosphere of this novel is grounded and down-to-earth. It is rare to see such a 'normal' cultivation novel. By 'normal', I mean there are no OP characters and cultivation magic is not the answer to everything (and I don't mean that in a negative way because I love OP cultivation novel). The protags themselves are as mortal and vulnerable as a commoner. They do have some abilities but those abilities are not omnipotent.

Even the imperial family is normal and undramatic. The subdued relationship between ML, his imperial brother and the dowager empress is one of the most well-written I have ever read. Author describes well the difficulties of their circumstances and status. It is all a question of fine tuning power balances and trust and they constantly have to mind their words and actions. It is exhausting and we are made to feel this total exhaustion as we follow the protags and friends in their adventures. It is not surprising that ML, who is a carefree and unambitious character, wants to quit his job and lead a quiet commoner's life with his beloved.

MC is a sickly sect master who is trying to find an antidote for his poisoned body. His sect is special, as they deal in intelligencia. MC is on the verge of death and suffers from debilitating chronic pain. Author writes really well and it is hearbreaking to see MC's suffering but despite this I don't think this is an angsty novel.

This is a novel worth reading and I will certainly re-read again in the near future. <<less

❄‧ - it's an extremely beautiful novel which deeply touched my heart!!, I love our main cp!! They don't get together until in the middle but the gong slowly starts pampering the shou to the heavens 😭, at first it was mostly due to guilt 💀 (you'll understand as soon as u read) but it was hilarious specially seeing even the gongs subordinates felt guilt and started taking care of the shou. Well now to the shou he is extremely smart, and the type of person who even after... more>> seeing the worst of people didn't give up on the world and persistently kept living, he also loves our gong so dearly there was times he didn't care about anything and went straight to save the gong 😭, he can also be extremely witty and shameless, about our gong, he's the emperor's step brother, he is also a general so he has heavy responsibilities but he is also so funny, so caring so childish yet so indulging he is awesome!! There's also amazing and memorable side characters, even the emperor is also quite good! I loved basically everyone in this novel besides the antagonists, now now more about the plot it's mystery, the mysterys kept me up at night to keep reading it more 😭, it starts of hella strong and kept left me wondering looking at the chapters that how could it get more messy than this mess 😵‍💫, my head hurts most of the time reading this, it's extremely well written! <<less

5 might be too much, but it has an overall lower rating than I think it deserves and voting without decimals is already limiting the accuracy.

Anyway I can guess why most people are not madly rating it, ecc... after all it's not a masterpiece nor a total flop, the characters seem to be between OP and ordinary people, their described as the top of the crop but you can't really feel all the supposed majesty, which isn't too bad to be sincere; I'm tired of the people being so OP... more>> that the villains have a comedic undertone, or being so cool/beautiful that common sense and world view get twisted. I can feel it, I wasn't so involved emotionally but neither was I bored. It is a mild story that starts off with such an episode that makes you wonder if you got the genre wrong, or clicked on some other thing. The story flows quite cleanly and while there are ripples I can't say they affected the reader (of course I can't really speak for everyone else) or even the characters as they did with the plot. The main and side characters while being somewhat forced to fit the roles are not too bad (it can be much worse), the people that appear for less time seem more realistic haha. It is quite funny, gore and mysterious at times, though it doesn't really breach in any of the fields. The background of the plot is basic, same for the characters but still likeable.

I know it basically seems I'm only calling it mediocre but I just mean to say it keeps me going even though it's not that striking, so it manages to make you interested enough to read (which doesn't happen often to me, I usually drop it when there's no feeling). Also I don't get how it is rated so low, I started stories that had a much higher ranking but with such stereotyped characters that I couldn't go on and finish. This compared is actually much better, so I actually invite you to read it if you don't want to feel too invested in something but also not like to totally waste your time. <<less

4.5 rating. Very good novel if you’re looking for action and adventure, and a well matched pair of leads. It does get tiresome with back to back battles and intrigues, and a somewhat unsatisfying ending to the big bad guy. Nice to see an imperial family that isn’t trying to off each other, but instead working together with their own strengths. ML is smart and effective. MC isn’t as well written. He is supposed to be a sect leader of information but doesn’t seem to know much of anything going... more>> on. They are a loving and enthusiastic couple. Side characters are quirky and interesting. The extras didn’t add much to the story. Mc’s mystery background was also not solved satisfactorily, which is the biggest minus since the author made it seem so important. <<less
