The novel is really good. The MC is crazy dark, charismatic and cool. I always feel that these reborn into the novel while knowing the whole plot thing becomes stale coz the MC just knows where everything is and gets it before the enemy.

This novel on the otherhand is really interesting because there are a lot of death flags that the MC has to overcome making it more tension filled.

TLDR: if you liked The Novel's Extra, tr*sh of the Count's Family or My Death Flag Shows No Sign of Ending... more>> the you will like this. Especially if you like a Dark and Charismatic MC. <<less

I had high expectations because of the author’s previous novel, but overall, this story felt weaker — aside from the ending. The power system is well done, and the side characters’ backstories aren’t too bad.

My main issue is with the characters. Most of the female characters around the protagonist are obsessively fixated on something; sometimes I catch myself wondering if that’s their only personality trait. There are so few notable male characters that it feels like the author has developed an allergic reaction to writing them.

if I have to say what this novel feels like, it's like you want to eat a juicy Xiao long bao but all you got is a boiled goat testicles that's being shoved down your throat.

the way the story, the premise of this story starts so good but then you start to see so many wrong things, look I don't mind if there's a lot female characters in the story but at least made them bearable, the way this author write girls feels so 2 Dimensional as if they never... more>> even DARE to interact with any woman in their life. and I'm all about girls being powerful (cause I'm also one) but oh my god, this feels painful to read as I keep reading the story.

honestly, I'm blaming all of this on the author. because the way I read the MC, he put boundaries for everyone, he didn't step outside of those boundaries, but the way the author makes it so all the girls are falling for him, like c'mon man...

this author have a history of shoving romance out of nowhere and forced it. so I'm not surprised how sh*t it becomes. <<less

First of all, amazing novel, I reread it multiple times and I'm completely in love with it (probably since I just really like the mc).

The characters are so full of personality and feel human too, that includes the female leads, which wow, you rarely see that, but they're really well written and this is coming from a female who usually dislikes tasteless harem novels with a multitude of random girls with the flattest personalities, speaking of harems, this novel is not a harem, it's more like coincidentally a lot of... more>> girls love and/or admire the MC but he doesn't really return those feelings.

The author writes the character's internal and external conflicts in such a convincing and understanding way, as even if you hate a character one second, you grow to love them within a few chapters. All of the female leads get their equal attention and character development arc which is just so yummy and scrumptious. And as for the main character "Deculein" or "Kim Woojin", he's made in such a way that you can relate to him despite him changing from the sad pathetic typical blank slate MC to a total menace, he's unique, it's rare to see novels in where the MC actually acts out the villain role for most of the novel (while also not being a total s*umbag ***hole and doing kind actions in the long term).

Now my cons with this novel is the drama doesn't STOP, that could be a pro to you, but it's just an endless nonstop ride of "drama starts with an FL and then drama ends" but then immediately another drama starts with another FL like bro give the man a break. It's just one of those novels that if you're reading first time you'd like to take a break or two even while binge reading, like it gets embarrassing or just hard to read, but what I love about it is that there is always a nice satisfying feeling once one drama arc is over.

Another con is that the author skips over things and characters a lot, forgetting about them for like how many chapters before just including their name once as to make it clear the character isn't dead. I can see why a lot of people say the novel gets bad once it reaches a certain chapter, probably since the interesting mechanics once mentioned in the chapters before are just forgotten, however I do find that to make up for that, the relationships developments are really good.

Third con, TRANSLATION, it varies throughout the novel but its at least good and comprehensible, and I'm not picky, but jesus christ the last chapters, they did the poor novel wrong, machine translation that just ruined the feels. I really hope someone retranslates the epilogues, as it's only a few and I would finally be able to rest at peace.

What I wish the author could've done: probably give us more pure Woojin scenes, I would've loved to learn more about him, after all the one we see during most of the novel is more of a mixture between him and Deculein.

But anyways heres a summary of the vibe if you just want to know whether to read it or not: its a story mostly focused on mending relationships and a lot of drama, not much fighting, not much lore and it's mostly just the misunderstandings trope, if you're a fan of this type of stuff, you'll love the novel, if you don't, well I don't really recommend it.

Also

Spoiler

Epherene is best girl but I feel like she would've meant much more if it wasn't for her having to develop a crush on Deculein, like did she have to hurt my heart like that?

and also best side characters award goes to Keiron and Maho.

Agreed with what others have said about a great story suddenly changing for the worse. Having said that, almost 300 chapters in I just realized there is very little fighting happening in this novel. If that's what you're into then this story is not it for you. MC has cheat skills but anytime it seems like he runs into a powerful enemy he either runs away or talks them out of it.

This is a well thought-out story for me (in short, it's great). Only at the end did I realize that this was a tragedy of some sort. I was only looking for a school life novel. I guess the only criticism I have for this is that the author has a tendency to make bitter sweet endings or portrayals of tragic heroes / heroines. But that is where the author's strength lies and I would keep reading more of their work.

Was absolutely involved and interested in this story. Everything was amazing, world building, plot, characters and their motivations, but before you know it that interest slowly dwindles until it becomes nigh non-existent. This is what I'm suffering from while inching closer to the 200 chapter mark with 100+ chapters more. Previously in the story even when certain characters annoyed/bored me I was still invested because of the MC and his journey. But alas the story gets lost in itself as it deviates from it's main purpose to overly convoluted melodrama.... more>> I'm not a fan of drama stemming from relationships cause I start getting pissed at character choices so maybe that's on me, is what I thought at first, but I guess many share the same sentiment.

All in all this story gets so lost in the mc's tiring relationships with the female cast (except for Yuriel and best girl Sophien of course) that the initial excitemnet of the story just vanishes. It totally forgets what it is at it's core but the story was fairly interesting and I don't wanna be too harsh so 3.5/5 but I'll round up to a 4 cause the beginning had me hyped. <<less

My eyes became blood shot from staying up till morning to continue reading this. VERY GOOD.

The characters are complex, fun, and interesting.

The plot is never boring and keeps you interested even when there is no "action".

The setting is creative and good enough to immerse yourself in.

While reading the the MC's struggle with his identity, and fighting back the original owner's personality, I thought that it was a really interesting take on transmigration, because most stories just either have the MC take over someone's body who just died, or they take over the body completely while inheriting the memories (or not). But then the author hits us with the fact that deculein's original personality is an in-game trait that is so strong it is hard for the MC to resist, which makes it so that all... more>> character development was lost and thrown out the window. Now yes, there are numerous times where characters are surprised with the way the MC talks because it's not like how deculein used to talk, but it still doesn't change the fact that the way he talks and acts is so infuriating. I think the author really shot himself in the foot, making it so that deculeins personality is an in-game trait that is hard to resist, since it just causes so many problems, or maybe the author did it on purpose since he wanted to write more and more misunderstandings.

This fact alone made me drop the novel, because most problems could be solved if the MC could just speak his mind and be honest, but noooo, deculein wouldn't do that. I get that conflicts drive a story, but when said conflicts are so drama heavy and braindead I just can't help but cringe.

TLDR: Original owner of the body that MC takes over has a built-in in game forced trait of being edgy and problematic <<less

I’ve been reading the other reviews and I think it’s kinda misleading. How can ppl say there are no male characters?

I can name a lot of them at the top of my head:

Rohakan, Murakan, Ihelm, Githerion, Kagan, Jackal, Kreto, Keiron, Ren, Jeff Gindalf, Drent, Carlos, Leo, Calixel, Jolang, Veron, Galak, Gerek, Zukaken, Betan, the Three Brothers, Decalane, Cebraim, Dezkan, and the other male mages and knights.

Of course this is not BL, all his romantic relationships are with girls. However, he fights males and females equally. He has 1 male (Rohakan)... more>> and 1 female (Carla) master. He has 1 boy (Drent) and 1 girl (Euphrene) student assistant. 1/2 boy and 1/2 girl assistant professor (Allen/Ellie). *I’m not serious with this last one but you get what I mean*

and how is it NTR???

NTR is stealing/cucking/cheating. His relationships are ambiguous but he has managed to draw a line with every girl.

Yoo Ara and Kim Woo Jin broke up before she got new bf.

1st fiancee is dead.

Deculein is trying to break off with Julie. But he has no other love interest. So far, he treats Sylvia, Ifi and Sophien as students. Yeriel as a little sister. Julie is the only one he loves. *The girls might have interest on him but he has not reciprocated them while he was engaged with Julie as far as I’ve read*

I don’t see any guy stealing Julie from him.

Harem is different from NTR. And in harem, most of it is consensual (rival heroines acknowledge each others love for MC).

Deculein is s*upid? No. He has personality traits hardwired into him. The previous Deculein is the embodiment of Pride. It is the thing that prevents him from admitting mistakes, backing down or reneging a promise. Kim Woo Jin compliments it in a way that he takes responsibility for Deculein’s past actions and accepts the responsibility of being the Villain. He also has no choice because of the [Villain’s Fate] trait. It is a good combination I think. The previous Deculein just messes up without taking responsibility for his stubborn and prideful behavior while the current one backs up his pride with his sense of responsibility. He sees through his schemes to the end. It’s not like Deculein/Kim Woo Jin is always right. His decisions are his answer. It might be right or wrong but it is his. He owns up to it.

i.e.
Spoiler

He stole Kagan’s thesis. He worked on it and completed. He admitted to pushing him to death yet gave him recognition.

He admits to killing Sylvia’s mother. He insisted that she be placed under green alert because he didn’t want to make a mountain out of mole hill. He is the only object of Sylvia’s hatred thus there is no need to inconvenience the world with it. He’ll gladly see her try. (He is bound to die a villain and he understand that he is the object of resentment of many others, what’s he difference of adding one more? Lol)

He stayed with Sophien til the last regression because of a promise

[collapse]

Man, if you think his arrogance and ocd personality is s*upidity. Try reading the Villain who Robbed the Heroines. He literally has to stab himself in the left if he got stabbed in the right to form symmetry. I think restrictions like this makes the narrative interesting. Imagine how the story goes when a modern neet can do just as he please without etiquette, aristocratic pride and these other traits imbibed with the body. He’ll get found out at the start of the novel. He’d be dissected the next day. Don’t get me wrong he still breaks character from the previous Deculein. But his core characteristics and mannerisms remain the same.

Cheats aside, he didn’t just get strong one day, he suffered through it and honed his body. He studies his lectures diligently although he has [Understanding] it consumes mana. He pushed himself to the limit by using it.

It’s not perfect but I think some reviews are misleading in my opinion. <<less

Started off really good but somewhere down the line, not only did the main plot and sub-plots got more convoluted, but the MC also strayed miles away from the novel's 'title'. Does not help that most of the 'harem' members ended up being annoying. Kinda shame that the novel ended up like this considering the potential it had.

I liked it.

Like previous books, the author is very good at world building. Good lore, good magic system, and good world building.. But then, like previous works, all is left at backseat and the book is turned into a kind of soap opera.

If you like reading about characters more than the bigger picture, you will like this one. Be warned; the author is widely criticized for not treating his female heroines very good. His MCs are generally calm, reserved, and weirdly every one of his heroines start somehow by misunderstanding... more>> the MC and having conflicts with them, and mostly end up falling in love with them in the end. It's not a consolation or anything but I appreciate that MCs do not treat females as property or playthings.

The MC in this is very, very OP. You do not feel any tension but I liked that he was an older person before and after compared to most transmigrated MCs who are old before transmigration but suddenly turn into teenagers. Also, the plot armor, cheat of MC is pretty OP but we see that he is constantly working hard to improve himself.

One of the things I most disliked in this book was the character Julie. She is written as a heroine in a bad book.

Spoiler

She is very honorable and just, and is against anything she considers unjust. She never considers the consequences of her actions, never stop to think why someone acts in a certain way or what makes them act in that way, just that if it is just or not. And she is written as just this single faceted person only does these things and nothing else.

She is a knight and is very driven to protect people. But she is not interested in anything else. The world is written as the magic is premium and wizards are at the top. Everyone, wizards included are involved in some form of politics to protect their interests or gain things. But not Julie. She is only interested in walking her path. She has a knight order but never thinks about how to gather support, or maintain her order. She never even checks for corruption in her order. Everything is managed and handled by her family or MC.

I felt she was very spoiled and entitled while reading the book.

Starts well. Makes you familiar and invested. Then goes downhill. Slowly. Gradually. One undesirable turn at a time. It's not bad writing. I would rather describe it as some kind of sophisticated psychological torture.

It made me feel hurt; not simply dissatisfied or touched by a tragic event, no, it made me go through a series of mental breakdowns. To the degree of flailing about on the floor in anguish. Thanks to experiencing that and later having my existential questions answered, I'm now equipped to deal with this kind of pain...... more>> though scars or scabs remain. I learned much from this novel, yet I can't say that I was happy to.

At least now I know better when to stop. It makes me feel good that I dropped it months ago, quite so since reading the last review. Perhaps a bit late, but having defined more clearly what I like and the limits of what I'm willing to tolerate made making decisions that much easier.

Well.

The story was pretty interesting. Especially earlier on, when I was bamboozled, enchanted, hexed, blinded... If you are unlike me, you may perhaps enjoy this book, even. Though I myself dislike it now, I find the memories of it valuable. It's worth at least that much. <<less

Ugh. It's really great and the characters are very interesting. It's a story of the MC who transmigrated into villain's body and tries to right the wrongs. The protagonist is like an umbrella in the middle of raining knives protecting his own people. The MC can be seen as a tsundere on the outside and this is quite the fun part of the story.

But tbh the theme is very sad and lonely. It wasn't written over dramatic but it's making you sympathize with the MC. The Title: "The Villain Wants... more>> To Live" is kinda sad. He just wants to live, he doesn't want to die but so many deathflags coming to him even so from the people he's trying to protect. I've been reading novels with Misunderstanding but mostly focused on being funny but this one is very melancholic and lonely. People might disagree with me, after all everyone is free to interpret the theme of the story as they like. I guess I was just brainwashing the people who might read this review to have the same feelings as me about this story. Some readers might've come to be looking for a Badass Strong Protag, some might just wants a Smart Protag, or some other elements etc— but I came to read the story expecting for a melancholic theme and I was right on the money. It's not edgy at all, it's a silent sadness welling inside as I read on is what I'm searching for. If you're looking for melancholic story and wants to to be whipped by sadness to satisfy your masochistic cravings for heartache then better believe what I said and let me brainwash you~!

If there's something that ruin this then it's the translation, it's not that bad actually but compared to the level of how good the story it's quite lacking, especially when it's on the complicated parts things become more confusing. At first it's quite great but quality going up and down and at chaps 120+ the story becomes a bit complicated and the translation also suffers as they didn't even bother with proper paragraph spacing. Add to that the edit is also very messy. I'm not really sure why but someone from reviews praised the translation so much I mean if it isn't the TL's fault then that's indirectly passing the fault to the author I guess. But it was really done bad and lacks edit. I'm not even sure if it's complete 'cause it feels like some parts is missing like some transitions often changes suddenly.

Edit: Oh f*ck everything, imma drop this! After 120ish it's really becoming unbearable, the decisions made by the MC frustrates me to no end. I don't want any of this anymore. <<less

Personally I love the story and really enjoy the direction it took after chapters 120. The MC is so interesting and the plot is so unpredictable. Although there are slow points I just can't stop reading because I'm just in love with the world and unique way this story is written. It's not for everyone though. It's not about leveling up or fighting and most of the time you forget he's even in a game. i've read 125 in 5 or 6 days, 3 to 4 hours of reading. Based on that premise, I can say that it's a pretty good novel. There´s a lot of twist and a lot more of things that will be explained in the future...i guess. Not so OP MC, a lot of lunatics, the origin of why he's in the game it's not even close to be disclosed... bla... bla.. bla. Hope you like it, like I did. (c125)

I will preface this with the fact that I have already read the author's previous works, namely "A Monster That Levels Up" and "The Novel's Extra"

And though the former is rather subpar compared to TNE, it's not as if TNE was perfect to begin with. I was a bit sad to see that a handful of the things that made me shake my head at the previous novel had come back to haunt this next one.

I will only talk about the worst ones.

It's impossible to pick this apart without spoiling,... more>> so yeah.

Bad news first, let's start with the cons:

Spoiler

1. The synchronization thing. This sucks. Essentially, the MC is neither Deculein nor Kim Woo-jin, but a mixture of both. I loathed the synchronization in the previous work, too. This time, however, it came at a much earlier time (right from the beginning) instead of arriving late and has hopefully no chance of devouring Woo-jin.

2. Chae Nayuns. There's a handful of Chae Nayuns. By this, I mean there's more than 1 heroine that has a love/hate relationship with the MC, where they both love him but also wanted to kill him at least once. Included, but not limited to in this list are Epherene, Julie and Sylvia. Probably Ellie, too.

3. Mopping drama. Mopping drama is the unfortunate event when Wooculein, neither Woo-jin nor Deculein, is forced to mop up after the original villain Deculein because he's a genuine ass and everyone hates him. It would be fine if all of the drama ever comes from characters that Deculein had wronged in the past, but the current Wooculein inherited Deculein's emotional intelligence of a brick and he is equipped only with a 5% ability to empathize, which is definitely Woo-jin's. What really sucks is when the current Wooculein gets hindered by past Deculein's words and actions, especially since they are already established facts with no room for discussion. Like the mu*der of a certain character's parent, or the mu*der of another character's parent, or perhaps the other awful stuff Deculein has done over 30 frickin years.

4. Why's everyone a woman? In the previous work, at least there was Kim Suho to fall back on when lacking in male screentime (Jonghak to a lesser extent), but in the first 100 chapters of this, all of the major characters are female except for the MC. This gets balanced later on, but that must have been the author taking in reader feedback. One of the rare male characters was even a trap all along, what the heck? She's 2nd best girl though, so I forgive it to an extent.

[collapse]

Now for some good news, maybe this way we can curb the bad feelings, no?

Pros:

Spoiler

1. The characters are fleshed out. I especially love

Spoiler

Sophien. God she's the best.

[collapse]

Heroines have normal friendships with each other and aren't mere sock puppets for the author, they interact with each other even without the MC's intervention, they have disagreements, gripes, their own circles of friends or none at all, dreams, objectives. In one of the later chapters, the MC tells another character about the person he still loves (his ex), which one of the heroines overhears. Her reaction to this was to flop in bed and murmur, "I wish it was me..." twice, in sadness. It was something so, so small and it's these small, insignificant things that turns these characters into people.

2. There's two people that got isekaid. Well, so far. The other one is his ex, Yoo Ara. As of now, we still don't know why they broke up. She's suffering the same disease as the MC, where she's assimilated with a character. Neither of them know the other got isekaid as well, for now. Both of them can't recognize the other despite knowing each other for years which is kinda weird, but maybe that's because neither are acting the way they usually do because of their assimilation with the game characters. I just like that there's more than one transported individual.

3. Sophien. Yes, she gets her own number. Her development, her motivations and her reactions to other heroines are so well-written. She's in love with Wooculein and knows what she wants, even harboring an almost ugly jealousy of Julie, whether she's aware of it or not. She's even doing everything in her power to make sure Julie hates Deculein in order to make a permanent rift in the two's relationship.

4. The misunderstandings. Oh god the misunderstandings. The way they weave together are just so good. They would be so much better without the bittersweet, tragic drama. The way two characters misunderstand MC and they think he's dying because of a precedent case and confirmation bias, how they develop by themselves believing he will die in the near future, how they might reveal it to other characters and how that might affect certain characters, all this anticipation is enough to drive a woman mad.

[collapse]

It's not perfect, but man am I craving for more. Closer to 4 than a 2, but it gets a 3 for now. <<less

It's a very good read in the beginning, but later on the author tries to jam too many plot points together resulting in everything becoming mediocre and not as impactful as they should be, sometimes outright bad.

The thing that really lower my previously high rating and leave me baffled on what the hell the author is trying to pull would be when HEAVY SPOILER

Spoiler

The empress somehow died suddenly and the regression power gets passed on to Epherene. The MC died during the subsequent encounters and we are led to progress the story through Epherene's view. Traitors all over the place, some self-proclaimed god appears, leading to one problem after the other. Which is fine and all, but the author chose to resolve this plot point by doing, what, I asked?

By having the MC just overcame the regression somehow, got his memory from who knows where, survived, and.. Did nothing else. Yes, just by being alive, the enemy god just said f*ck it I'm not doing anything else and let the empire be. We didn't even know how the Empress died in the first place. Key traitors are left alive and seen in the next arc, so what was the point of all that? And don't get me started on the Voice world/quest or whatever the hell the author planned to do with that.

[collapse]

TLDR; very good early on, the author tried to do too many things later on, but failed on a lot of those. In my opinion. <<less

At the start I didn't find anything special in this, despite the countless praises in the comments. But as I read on, it grew on me. I suggest taking multiple breaks in between arcs because there were so many things happening that one can easily get burned out or bored.

This MC is perfect for me after reading countless kind and emotional heros. Deculein is largely unemotional, indifferent, sharp and reserved. He fits perfectly in the noble box.

In the end though, I had to dropped it. It would have been perfect... more>> if the novel just focused on the professor / teaching and action fantasy part. But the author just had to insert a f*ck ton of misunderstandings and convoluted romance / drama that it was such a slugde to continue. So in these “I’m the villain” type novels, the MC knows what’s going to happen and sets up very clear goals so readers have a clear sense of progression and accomplishment as they pass each point. However this one doesn’t and feels more like a cliche transmigration novel (the MC tries to stay alive in those too). The MC also does strange and unexplained things which keeps me feeling like an outsider instead of drawing me into the story. Since it’s not clear what the goals are, the setting is... more>> relatively peaceful, and everything is too easy for the MC, it’s extremely boring after awhile. <<less
