Sometimes, life takes the absurd to new heights.

Patrick, a burned-out office worker, dreams of retiring as a “natural recluse,” tending a garden near all the conveniences of modern life.

Instead, he dies of overwork and wakes up in a world of magic and monsters—exiled to a remote island as punishment for a crime he didn’t commit.

With no choice but to survive, he juggles farming, fishing, and avoiding starvation while navigating the eccentric villagers and bizarre events plaguing the island. Armed with his meager magic and a sarcastic attitude, Patrick learns the hard way that rural life is no “romantic” dream—it’s a f**king comedy.

It's a relaxing novel with a bumbling protagonist trying to adjust to his new life on a remote island. The stakes are low and conflicts easily resolved. There are no looming threats, and the primary goal was simply to live each day, taking pleasure in the simple things.

Being a low level wizard, Patrick, the transmigrated protagonist, is shown as inexperienced both in magic and in agricultural work. His incompetence in the beginning may be off putting, but he quickly learns from those around him and in turn shares his own... more>> knowledge with them. His antics of failing in doing the most basic tasks in rural life, yet being thoughtful with the sensibilities of a modern literate person, paints him as someone likeable but needing to be taken care by the other villagers on the island.

The problems of surviving were taken care of fairly easily, largely due to the help of the friendly villagers. Patrick contributes in his own way, and you get to see both sides benefiting from their relationship. It's fun to read about all the interactions with the others and the small victories for Patrick.

If you want a light-hearted read about a protagonist surviving in a foreign environment, growing and affecting those around him slowly, try this. <<less
