When he woke up, Zhong Ziqi found that he had transmigrated over!

It’s okay that his family is very poor, but unexpectedly both of his parents are dead!

Even if both of them are dead, he is actually a Ger!

It doesn’t really matter that he was a Ger, but who could have thought that he was sold by his elder uncle’s family!

Even if he was sold, he was sold to a fool!

Zhong Ziqi was calm on the outside, but inside he was screaming: Could it be any worse?

But since I can’t do anything to prevent it, I might as well sit back and enjoy it.

However, having such a silly person to accompany him in this unfamiliar and strange world, it’s, actually…not bad too.

(Updated 01/22/23 - 2nd Reread) Historical Drama (Ancient China). This is very much like your typical 'modern man transmigrates into ancient times to make money' novel. It's just... hm. It's just a little more chill than the usual ones! Here, the MC, Zhang Ziqi, finds himself transmigrating into the body of a young Ger (this is a world without females, just males and males who can't give birth -- called Gers) who had been sold off by his guardians to become the wife of the village's fool (the ML,... more>> Zhao Zheng'an). After marriage, nevermind having the support of his husband's new family, they were quickly separated and forced to live in the old ancestral home at the edge of the village with only one tael of silver and three acres of farmland to start off with.

Of course, as a "poor-to-rich" novel, this start doesn't stump the MC at all. He makes use of modern knowledge and his above-average cooking skills in order to make a living (that's right, cooking. There's not much actual farming in this novel). The novel is short and relatively simple, not bad to read if you have spare time, but it's not all that exciting either. There's nothing too special about it, which is both its good and bad point. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that it wouldn't hurt to try it out, just don't have too high expectations!

The first time I read it, I only read up to c68 and rated it at 3.5/5 stars. This time, I read a little more, making it all the way to c82. Still not quite to the end, and there were times I almost gave up at the same point as last time XD But, altogether, it's not a bad experience. I changed the rating to 3.45/5 stars. Not because I thought the experience was worse than before, but because my rating scale changed since the last time, and this is more fitting.

CHARACTERS: 7/10

When it comes to characters, I think that the ones shown are pretty realistic. They're not the usual, one-personality 2D-cut outs that you see in a lot of Danmei Novels. Still, this does mean that the drama isn't as extended since they're not too exaggeratedly good or bad. So if you're looking for character conflicts, this one is lacking the usual face-slapping!

Zhang Ziqi (MC)

Transmigrator that's particularly good at cooking (although he's not a professional chef). His advantage is that he has the resolve to do hard work. And as for his personality, he's the type to have a sharp mouth but soft insides~ Close to a tsundere, but not as exaggerated.

Zhao Zheng'An (ML)

He starts off as the "Fool" of the village with his mental age being somewhere around 7-8. But he was previously known as a very responsible man full of potential.

  • Minor Spoilers:
    Spoiler

If you're concerned about his mental age staying as it is, don't worry! He recovers after a little while.

ROMANCE: 7.5/10

The romance for this story is sweet and simple. The pairing gets along pretty quickly (so the novel is mostly about their established relationship). I do like the banter between the pair tho! They actually talk to each other, LOL unlike other pairings. As an aside, there seems to be at least two side couples but I never got to see it.

SETTING: 8.5/10

Set in an alternate version of Ancient China. Focuses on rural living. Both the MC and ML live in a rural village and they travel to the County to make money. Set up is pretty good, as expected, since this is mostly focused on the worldbuilding aspect!

PLOT: 5/10

I think the plot is pretty weak. It's slice of life, so that's only to be expected. There's no real big goal here (outside of getting rich?? LOL), the two are just going through their daily lives with just a hint of family drama.

RATING: 3.5/5

Although not a favorite, I didn't dislike this story! I wouldn't mind reading it again. But as I read similar novels recently, this low-key version felt a bit too slow-paced. That might be what you're looking for tho (so I suggest you at least give it a try if you're interested in what I mentioned previously!)

  • Heat Level:As an added note, this novel has a couple of on-screen NSFW scenes. But they're not explicit (as far as I know from what I read!). Like, some things will happen but there are no details (and the rest fade to black.)
  • Translation: The translation is pretty good, but the grammar is not the best, and I thought the explanations were a bit too cluttered. But that's mainly because I had already known those metaphors. If you're a beginner in CN novels, I think this is a very good start, because at least you can familiarize yourself with all the different common Chinese sayings.

Its a fairly nice, peaceful read. Very slice of life as the tag says. Not much drama but very fluffy to keep you entertained... albeit, a bit boring.

Its nice, but as far as the enjoyment goes, I can only give it a 3 star. When reading it, it even felt like a chore. I feel that a big part of this is because of the editing which definitely needs some polishing. Kudos to the team though.

The execution is also a bit lacking in some part that I cant point out.... more>> It just feels like something is missing.

Also, every character getting a love

Found it rather boring so far. Might pick it up another day and give it another shot. I feel like this type of world setting is weird.
Spoiler

I'm all about BL settings, but if you completely replace women with guys who can give birth, it just seems off.

3-ish stars: An all right ancient-times foodie-farming novel, nothing surprising or new, nothing particularly anger-inducing or annoying, lots of food descriptions and fluff, supportive generic side characters who acquire their own partners and happiness along the way. Although there is drama and dramatic happenings in the first half of the story, because of the type of novel and the simplistic, straightforward narrative, you know everything's going to turn out fine, so there's not really any tension; by the latter half of the story, it's all slice of life and not... more>> really any further drama or indeed, anything problematic or unusual happening. A decent way to pass the time or cleanse your mental palate from darker or more complex reads. The ending is a bit meh as the story basically just stops and the author's note afterward talks about how the author is bad at writing endings, but there wasn't much plot going on and nothing much left hanging so it's okay, I guess, if a somewhat abrupt end to an unoffensively underwhelming story.

The translation is pretty good and I appreciated the footnotes and parentheticals (and food pics), especially the ones explaining idioms or poetic phrases.

As other reviewers have noted, despite the title there's very little farming in this novel as the MC instead focuses on cooking his way to success via food stalls and later a restaurant. And as is typical for ancient transmigration ger cooking novels (boy what a Venn diagram of genres that is), the sole purpose of him being a transmigrator is 1) for him to know super amazing recipes that actually aren't that amazing, are still traditional Chinese cuisine, and some of them could easily be figured out like his tofu recipe that literally just has basic ingredients sprinkled on top of plain tofu and 2) for him to be ignorant about gers basically being women and therefore treated like women and expected to act like women, though even this isn't really much of a plot point after the very beginning and he fully adapts to being a ger within a very short span. I can't even remember if he came from the stereotypical future zombie apocalypse because his prior history to transmigrating is so irrelevant and barely mentioned. It's also a bit plot-hole-contradictory because the story shifts between saying he inherited the original body's memories one moment and then in the next saying he's clueless/ignorant about things he should know about. Either way, it's never a big issue.

But I mean, hey, most transmigration stories are like this and this one is a conventionally readable novel with generic s*um families getting their eventual comeuppance and the main CP constantly bettering their home, their fortunes, and their own family. There is the expected drama from assorted jealous villains and it is always resolved as expected, in favor of the CP; bad things happen now and then but the CP always bounces back even better.

I'm not really fond of the trope wherein one of the CP has a mental (or physical) disability that gets miraculously cured partway through the story, but there it is. The gong was a regular guy for most of his life, then hit his head and became a "fool" before the story begins, and you know what that means—the only cure for that kind of thing is to hit your head again. Naturally being a "fool" = "behaves like a cute and obedient little child". Talk about plot devices: the sole purpose of the ML being a "fool" was to immediately marry him to the MC and set up his s*um family, and let the MC shine with independence and business management by setting up his own food stall before the ML eventually "recovers", except for residual headaches because of course the plot needs something to keep it going like finding a cure for that.

The early story focuses more heavily on delicious food and then the food aspect fades somewhat as the focus shifts to the business aspects of managing a restaurant, side characters, home improvement, seeking a cure for the gong's headaches, and family bonding—typical slice of life stuff, but it's all pretty generic. So not bad, and entirely readable, but not very interesting. Later business stuff and renovations and etc. In the story pretty much always go exactly as planned with no problems, and almost all side and mob characters are accurately judged/described at first appearance as either good gentle people or mean-looking villains. There is nothing surprising in this story.

There's typical plotlines like long lost family, expanding the food business, dealing with sabotaging competitors, building a bigger home, having a kid (this is an mpreg story but not a child-raising one because the baby doesn't happen until the very end of the story), etc. It's all pretty straightforward and angst-free, and the main characters are generically likeable. As mentioned previously, the story ends weirdly abruptly with a note from the author frankly stating that they're not good at writing endings. 3-ish stars because the novel decent, but not more than that. <<less

It is a cute read where there is not much angst. I ordered Chinese takeouts because of this story since the description of each dish (+the pictures the translator included) made my mouth drool. There is not much farming aspect in this novel--more like a tycoon setting rather than farmers.

I liked the novel. Even though it's not the best story, it has everything you're looking for if you want a relaxed plot about a man who transmigrates to a ger and starts from scratch to make money. There's no extreme violence or almost any villains; everything unfolds peacefully. It's a calm yet engaging story to pass the time.

The protagonist is ordinary, not overpowered, with average knowledge. Nevertheless, he manages to devise a food business from nothing. His husband is truly kind, deeply appreciates him, and is very attentive. Additionally,... more>> he's hardworking and possesses commercial skills that help the business grow.

The other characters are kind, honest, and generally good people. <<less

It was a simple and straight forward plot, very fluff and daily life style.

Both MC and ML love each other, no major things happen, most of the time everyone gets along.

Normal food is presented not too extravagant.

Damn another food/farming novel where they didn't go to the Capital to meet imperial or the Empeor, I wan to see that happen at one of this novels.

There's more doctors appearing than chefs to be honest

But it was good relaxing read that takes about 2 days.

The story and characters are very cute, however it is yet another one of those "women do not exist in this world" type of stories where ger are assigned all the gendered and societal expectations that are associated with womanhood.

i like the characters and the story is cute enough. Some complaints:

1) the title is extremely misleading. There’s almost no farming, and the “fool” ... more>>
Spoiler

gets cured in chapter 32

[collapse]
. I preferred the first thirty or so chapters, after that the main couple is still cute but it’s not what I was looking for with this novel

2) this was my bad, but mpreg in chapter
Spoiler

68. I didn’t realise it was going to be in this story, which was my fault. But also I don’t think a 21st century man would be so accepting of getting pregnant. MC accepted his situation within a few lines, but I feel like even women/gers/whatever would take longer than that to accept an unexpected pregnancy

[collapse]

anyway this story wasn’t for me, but it’s not bad. It’s an easy read and the characters are all quite likeable imo. <<less
