After Becoming the Protagonist’s Inner Demon

Xiao Mo accidentally travelled into a book and became the protagonist’s inner demon.

The system actively introduced: “You need to accompany Chu Jinglan as he grow, and then be killed by him at the right time to prove his Dao. After completing the task, you can get a chance to be reborn and survive in the world of cultivation with a new identity. Isn’t it a good deal!”

Unexpectedly, Xiao Mo closed his eyes and lay down after listening: “Got it, won’t do it, he’ll die if he wants to.”

System:? ? ?

Where did the rebellious host come from? It’s different from what was agreed!

Xiao Mo felt that he was very unlucky. Not only was he forced to travel through time, but he also had to be the inner demon of someone he didn’t like and live with him day and night.

That’s right, Xiao Mo didn’t like Chu Jinglan’s character design.

Because in the original book, Chu Jinglan could have taken the script of Long Aotian, a genius who was abolished and then reborn, stepping on mountains and rivers, and sweeping the world with a sword. However, for the sake of a fickle hearthrob shou, he died without body left.

Thinking it was a career-oriented article, but unexpectedly getting splashed with dog blood, Xiao Mo decisively expressed his disdain. He wanted to be passive, indifferent, and have nothing to do with whatever Chu Jinglan did.

He watched coldly as the youth went from being a proud son of heaven to a cripple, watched coldly as his engagement get annulled and humiliated, watched coldly as he was betrayed and abandoned by his own family, watched coldly —— he couldn’t watch anymore!

“Chu Jinglan, can you tolerate this? Fight back. If you can’t do it, give me your body, I’ll do it!”

Chu Jinglan, who was also fed up with him, wiped off the blood. Looking at the inner demon that was more anxious than him, his expression was complicated and unpredictable: “…I need the inner demon to help me?”

Xiao Mo: Who wants to help you?

But it was this inner demon who “didn’t care” about the life and death of the protagonist, who accompanied Chu Jinglan to rebuild his cultivation, accompanied him ascended to the peak, and accompanied him through the most difficult moments in his life.

Then when he was at the highest, the inner demon died in his arms.

Xiao Mo lay in Chu Jinglan’s arms and vomited blood, thinking that he would stay far away from him after his rebirth.

After his was reborn, before he could hide, Chu Jinglan, who had become an immortal lord, suddenly appeared in front of him.

“Xiao Mo,” Chu Xianzun’s eyes were calm but there’s hint of madness within, “Where do you want to leave me this time?”

Xiao Mo: !

Wait, I have changed my identity, how did you recognize me? ?

I'm completely beyond awe!

I really really really love this novel.

The MC and ML experience both tragedy and success. This story is so lovely I have to pause to read coz I don't want to find another that could not compare or compete to this novel.

... more>> Mind you, MC and ML experience the lowest and climb their way to greatness. I cried. I literally cried 4x because of this novel! That's how I was invested.

It's well written that I thought I catched the twisg but I did not lol.

One is that I thought they were the OG moon couple! The couple that defy race, a demon and an immortal union. But no! I really thought they were but theid story is far beyond I thought! Well I wont spoil or anything. But yeah! I really recommend this one.

Btw. Word of an advice to a person who read 300 novels because of this site. If you are bored while reading 5-10 chapters of the book, it's not meant for you. Moveon. And don't just put a review just because you read few chapters. Moveon to another. You did not divulge with all of the info, so do not be rude to the translators and editors. They put their time and effort to translate and edit. Your due diligence is to read all the chapters and review the content. But do not do it prematurely. I don't even read reviews anymore because I find it mostly bias.

Why did I say this?

Because I don't want it to happen to this novel.

That's all. <<less

5 star for the plot.

characters- the MC and ML have a reasonable emotional build up. Not falling in love immediately. Each has their own character developments

Plot- though there are cliche, scenes, and characters like in every novels I read, the overall story still was written great

settings- the settings were all described intricately. Each place held important scenes and value to the story and to the characters

Lovely story.

The twist after his death as an inner demon was quite a surprise. Really liked that it had that. Gave it quite the change.

Definitely a rereadable story.

Loved this when I read it in Chinese MTL, happy there's a translation now. It's the kinda of story I've been looking for where the MC accompanies the ML from when he falls down from his genius status and then slowly makes his comeback as a Long Aotian. Emotional plot is very comfortable for me in terms of pacing and there's no s*upid misunderstandings that lead to dog blood plots. However, there is a plot point later on that did make me cry, but because it's a plot point it... more>> developed the relationship between the MC and ML.
Spoiler

If I recall correctly the MC finished his task and had to kill himself using the ML's body because his identity as the ML's heart demon would only hinder the ML and him from having his own body. The ML was forced to fall asleep when MC did that so he only knew that MC was gone after waking up but didn't know he killed him :' (and went crazy looking for him. When he came back hundreds of years passed even though it was less than an hour (?) of MC trying to buy everything he can from the system before he returns in a new body and that's what made the ML paranoid when reuniting with MC. But he gets healed by MC so it's all good

Personally, I like the story a lot. I give it 4.5 stars ***** (I don't know what happened, it only shows 4 stars)

Not only was the plot and character growth well-written, the sweet interactions between MC and ML were enjoyable to read as well. Yes, there's some angst sprinkled in there too, but nothing that detracts from the story. If you're not the type to enjoy plots that go from sweet to bitter, then bittersweet to sweet, then maybe this isn't the story for you.

Spoiler

I did read the reviews under this title that complained about how draggy it was, how the plot doesn't make sense, or how the author added unnecessary suffering. I'm glad I disregarded the negatives (some of them clearly didn't read the story properly and provided misleading points) and went ahead to read it because the story isn't as bad as it's made out to be.

MC actually transmigrated twice. His first transmigration still led him to meet ML, but because of the system's assignment, he did not spend as much time with ML. Nevertheless, they still grew closer in relationship, only for ML to die in the end because of OG shou that had the old Heaven's Will backing. Distraught, MC killed the shou but since his soul suffered injuries, he went to recover briefly in a random small world and told the system that when the world resets, to assign him somewhere far away from ML so he doesn't get involve and die because of it.

However, the old Heaven's Will - in an effort to stop MC from returning - interfered with the timeline (causing the story that MC read before his 2nd transmigration to occur) as well as his character transition. MC was never meant to be ML's inner demon. In order to offset the consequences of this interference, the system provided MC with a sub-quest that, once achieved, would put him back on track onto the main task.

[collapse]

I was kind of mindful of the yandere tag, because toxic relationship stories are something I detest to read, but thankfully, the ML managed to pull himself back from being a red flag.

Spoiler

ML actually went through 3 lifetimes. First was with MC, but he died because of OG shou. Second time around, there was no MC by his side this time. He went through all the ups and downs alone, with memories of his first life, and followed along with whatever OG shou did to take back whatever luck that was taken from him by the old Heaven's Will. Third time, he has no memories of his previous lives and met inner demon MC for what seemed like the first time.

I get why there's a slowburn, but with both MC and ML having no memories, that's to be expected. Plus, after ML was forced to kill MC, he had to wait 300 years before finally meeting MC again (500 years short from Hua Cheng's own long wait in Heaven's Official Blessing). Is it surprising his spirit got shattered from all the sorrow, grief and anger that spanned those long years and eventually twisted his mind? Fortunately, MC managed to help put him back together in the end, and they had a few heart-to-heart talks.

[collapse]

The ending......

Spoiler

I don't get what's so bad about the ending, like some had said. If it's for the fact that there was no epic battle between MC, ML and OG shou and main antagonist, or that the old Heaven's Will died too easily, do remember OG shou had already had 2 lifetimes of success and that previously, the old Heaven's Will expanded too much energy just to reset the world twice. If I were MC or ML, after being reborn one time too many with my enemies before me, I would kill them off post-haste, no fanfare needed. That's my opinion.

[collapse]

Overall, it's a lovely read. Not too heavy, nor too complex that has your mind go through hoops to understand. The translator of this novel has really done a good job. <<less

personal enjoyment: 4.5/5

Beautifully written, the author does an amazing job building the world and the romance (a great slowborn). I like how both the MC and ML go on a journey of strength, exploring the 3 realms, meeting new characters and just building trust in each other when they're both such cautious people. Our ML (Chu Jinglan) goes beyond being just the cold-OP-protagonist, he's wonderfully fleshed out and we see why he falls in love with our MC, who is always by his side with the utmost confidence and care.... more>> Chu Jinglan is an acts of service type of person and it's so sweet to read about. Our MC (Xiao Mo) is also very smart and strong, he's the warmth to our cold MC - while still having a ruthless edge that comes with living in a cultivation setting. There aren't any misunderstandings between the two because they trust each other, communicate and are the definition of being able "read each other's eyes" and speak without words. Just a whole forest of green flags these two are.

I do see where some reviewers are coming from about the last part of the novel (aka the part after our MC dies and comes back like it says in the summary) - but I still think it was written really well and I was happy when they both resolved everything and came together. <<less

Adorable and also made me cry.

The chemistry between MC and ML was believable unlike most novels these days. It's not quite enemies to lovers but it gives the same vibes

Spoiler

I think it's really beautiful how Xiao Mo really tries to help ML after he comes back. Breaks out of the tropes of typical reincarnation misunderstandings and instead he becomes aware of his own feelings and of the ML's

Spoiler

idk why but when Su Baimo couldn't remember what the lower realm looked like it really hit me. It's so sad because I feel like he's just pure evil but like if he survived he could've had such insane character development. I don't feel bad for him because it's the consequences of his own actions but when he said he couldn't even remember I was like f*ck that's so sad 😭 (maybe just me that feels that way idk)

Main characters

I think it was so sweet how they slowly fell in love. It didn't feel forced. The MC also wasn't Gary Stu like not everyone fell in love with him.

Fenxiu

Spoiler

I agree with one of the reviewers that he had potential but he low-key pisses me off. In the sense that he has a superior bloodline and all that stuff but he seems so weak in the end like I feel he didn't even try. Like he's super powerful but MC didn't even struggle that hard for him to die.

I'm not sure I can convey just how much I loved this novel. The author was just so good at 1) describing feelings through actions instead of words, 2) conveying the depth of emotions that were at their most raw, 3) two person perspective – love, love, love, and 4) describing romance in the most poetic, lovely way.

In the beginning, the MC transmigrates to become an inner demon of the ML and it isn't long before he's bored and begins to stir up trouble. The MC and ML clash because... more>> they're really just petty teenagers who continually try to one-up each other. But, then, the drama begins and it becomes a deep, complicated story.

It's sometimes painful and sometimes just so sincerely satisfying.

There are many similarities to other stellar novels; mainly Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Legendary Master's Wife. But, it's a cultivation novel, so I suppose that makes sense. Instead of being weird, it actually brought back many good memories from when I read those stories.

This is the second novel I've read from this novel and they've become a favorite. Hopefully there are more out there that just haven't been translated yet.

Many thanks to the author as well as the translator Anzhe at KnoxT. <<less

My favorite parts of this novel were from the beginning up until the climax, when MC dies and reincarnates into his own body. That doesn't really count as a spoiler since it's in the summary right?? 🧐 The first two parts of the novel focused on MC and ML's growth and adventures--it was an enjoyable read seeing them make new friends and loyal confidants along the way! The last part was focused mainly on romance and tying up loose ends. I feel like the last arc was somewhat unnecessary and... more>> just meant to push angst/romance, but I won't complain. I agree with many other of the reviews here. The first 3/4 of the story was excellent. Great world building, wonderful relationships, good character arcs.

Spoiler

And then we get close to the ending and have a giant 300 year time skip? It felt so rushed! I think it could have been good if she had fleshed out the “new” ML. But the ML after 300 years was a total stranger compared to his younger self. The young version who was too nervous to touch the MC after realizing his feelings was so different to the ML who wanted to lock up and SA the MC (and I guess it was the 200 y.o. Broken spiritual fragment vs the 300 y.o.)

Finally found something I could add to my favourites list. This one really is a gem. I mostly adore the relationship between the ML and MC. They're not falling in love without no reason. It was a good build up of understanding, trust and the accumulation of shared experiences that led to development of feelings for both. I didn't feel it was rushed.
Spoiler

The timeskip did make it feel a little bizarre at the beginning and it wasn't really fair for the MC and then ML was also about to be the way I absolutely would hate but thankfully it was all resolved well. Phew

Overall it was a great read and I love this story a lot. Translation was also amazing.

Such a cute story mostly focusing on the MC and ML’s relationship and how they grow their trust, dependence, power and love.

They are both pretty OP but somewhat balanced I suppose. MC gets transmigrated into ML’s inner demon and he can go undetected by everyone so he’s basically the ultimate spy and he also has the ability to materialize but he can’t harm anybody or else he gets punished and can’t be too far from ML and while ML is like a super protege he gets his meridians shattered but... more>> MC possess his body and together they get stuff done.
Spoiler

Since MC is an inner demon he needs to be killed by ML at one point, he eventually possesses ML or something like that and kills himself that makes the ML super emo after a 300 year period of separation !!! That to the MC was just a half a day due to the evil heavenly law. The rest of the story is just MC healing ML’s heart and killing the demon lord.

What a gem. The plot, the pacing, the romantic development... everything was so well done.

I really like how their relationship progressed and how they managed to heal the wounds from their trauma. Nothing was too sudden nor were the heavy parts oversimplified. Such a rare setting. They truly matched each other in every way.

What a lovely novel and a good read!

It reminded me of Word of Honour (I have yet to read the novel). The Author perfectly conveys the cat/dog dynamic the MC and ML have, however, almost everything falls apart after the inner demon part ended.

Everything after they FINALLY confess to each other feel draggy to me. ML gets reduced to this yandere dominant all-powerful cultivator who wants to jail MC but is unable to because he loves him too much to jail him. AND NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, I love to... more>> read those parts, the feeling that it conveys I adore it

BUT WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE FOR LIKE 30+ CHAPTERS OF THE SAME???

It would have been better to cut it short and give them the happy ending of travelling the world together in secret just like the ML wanted when he decided to not kill his inner demon, like, damn <<less

A wonderful novel. The storyline is interesting, everything feels right to me. The MC helped ML to overcome her life obstacles. In another world MC has actually met ML, they work together with a mutually beneficial agreement. However, because the world did not go well, several things caused MC to have his memory sealed and repeat the world but with a different scenario from MC and ML meeting again.

In short, I feel that MC and ML's relationship makes sense, they didn't just suddenly fall in love. In the process of... more>> them meeting and falling in love, it didn't feel boring, even after they confirmed their relationship, I really didn't feel bored to read it.

As for the annoying characters, they ended up as they should. I don't think they're too annoying because the story is actually more about MC and ML's relationship. Anyway, I wasn't too bothered by the annoying characters.

The ending is also satisfying including the additional story. I thought it was really boring to live for hundreds of years, but in this story I felt that life is always lacking if we meet a partner who really suits us. If the afterlife really exists I hope MC and ML are always harmonious together. <<less
