After Failing to Influence the Protagonist

At the beginning of his transmigration into a book, Pei Jing knew exactly what he should do. Following the generic plotline, he was supposed to take the protagonist, who would face a challenging destiny, as his disciple. He would use love and tenderness to influence him, cling to his thigh, and incidentally prevent his descent into darkness.

However, the plot took an unexpected twist, and the protagonist still succumbed to darkness. The blackened protagonist personally inflicted harm upon Pei Jing, crippling him, destroying his cultivation, annihilating his sect, and casting him into endless hell.

Pei Jing: “Hehe, interesting :)”

And so, in the depths of hell, he too succumbed to darkness.

Emerging from the Abyss of Ten Thousand Ghosts, the once pristine Immortal in white transformed into a blood-red Asura. He severed the protagonist’s limbs and sealed him in the depths of the sea, thinking it would be the end. However, he didn’t anticipate that it was only the beginning. He was reborn, but in a body that was not his own.

After transmigrating into the book, Pei Jing’s first task was to find the protagonist, take him as his disciple, and search and search. And finally, at a certain street corner, he found him…

Pei Jing’s heart filled with joy. He bent down and reached out his hand to the protagonist, saying, “Young friend, are you willing to become my disciple?”

The protagonist raised his dirty head, looking confused.

However, at that moment, another person’s hand reached out and touched Pei Jing’s.

That person was dressed in black, with a mysterious and alluring appearance. Smiling, beautiful yet dangerous, he said, “Immortal, what do you think of me?”

Pei Jing: “???”

And just like that, he ended up taking two disciples at once. It seemed like quite a lucrative development—but wait, wait a minute, isn’t this development a bit unusual?

A brief introduction to those who were looking for adoption-type plot.

Spoiler

Its not.

The 'protagonist' is actually very scum. Motivated by his inferiorities he seeks to 'prove' himself to those better than him. In the first timeline he does so by ruining the MC[Now Ml's] life and Yunxiao. After which, he proceeds to live in his own delusions of self pity and little to no respect for anyone but himself.

[collapse]

It portrays some of the more delicate tropes in Novels and manhuas like bullying, and Transmigrators adapting into the transmigrated world very nicely.

The ML who has crawled back from hell has a very cynical character while MC who is still not ruined by the happenings of the future has a more optimistic approach on things. Kind of like a newborn calf unafraid of the tiger.

In this way both of them compliment each other very well.

I cannot explain much but this article has displayed negativity born out of negativity very well. And I havent read many where its done like this.

The side characters interactions with the MC and ML and Plot is also quite well fleshed out and I like the concept of heavenly ladder collapsing, maybe thats why we cant cultivate anymore : (

Jokes aside, I really like the MC's yellow bird X The phoenix Devine beast ship haha

Spoiler

But what I'm really looking forward to in this novel is the side chapter where the main CP from another Novel of a similar plotline make a appearance here! Very excited

That was my misconception. Xie Sui and Song Yu don't make an appearance here. I read the extra and was thoroughly face slapped. [22/07/2024]

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also, this isn't very similar to MXTX. Those who think so are delusional and haven't read anything else to calm down from their craze. Just because of the walking in the blood rain? There wasn't even any Blood rain except in the most earliest chapter and sometime later in the seventh killing song arc. Calm down please

Spoiler

[22/07/2024] I also feel that the last few chapters were quite hasty, and the conclusion for everything was very roughly articled.

Just looking at the number of chapters while I was still in chapter 87 had made me feel a little sceptical. And The plot became somewhat dry after MC disguises himself and pursues the ML. Like a fellow comrade implied, even the fight with the Queen Mother was more exciting.

Pei Jing is also a little too observed in his own things to pay attention to his disciple, who is going astray little by little. I just feel that even without MC, that little guy could have taken someone else as his aid if he was truly good hearted. Alas, he was painted to be so vicious.

I absolutely adore the heck out of Pei Jing's chaotic good relationship with his friends. He's the typical shameless yet morally-inclined protagonist loved by everyone and I'm here for it. I only seen a glimpse of their bonds with each other but I'm craving for it and hope that the future chapters would give opportunity to reveal more similar situations.

The male lead's Chu Junyu but all we know right now about him is that he's long given up on standing on a high moral ground due to past experiences that... more>> contributed to Yunxiao's downfall from his timeline. <<less

I will be honest that I am not a fan of the MC. At first I was fine with him, even found him funny, but I changed my mind when the original protagonist appeared and he interact with him.

Spoiler

the author always telling us that MC is really kind, however toward the original protagonist, his kindness is kinda half half. There's a scene where the protagonist was being bullied, he saw it all but didn't come forward to help him. Only later he beat the bullies, then threatened them to pretend to be the protagonist's friend, but what's the point? What the protagonist needed was someone showing kindness to him. He only wanted a friend, the MC can be his friend. It's that simple, but he didn't do it.

There are many scenes where the original protagonist got bullied and many descriptions how he was badly treated, but the MC didn't do much.

[collapse]

It left a really bad taste for me. My impression of the MC turned low after that. Maybe the author intended to write him that way for more character development later, but I just couldn't take it.

Maybe it's just me being sensitive to thing like bullying. I am still halfway, I will try to finish it cuz I want to see some character development for the MC.

Besides that, I love the side characters. His friends are interesting. The story and mystery are engaging. Do try read this, it might be your cup of tea. <<less

5* to offset the low ratings. This story has its flaws but cert5not deserving of the 3* rating.

Is this what's considered selfcest? I'm not sure. But the MC is Pei Yuzhi of this timeline, while the ML is from another timeline. Both of them have vastly different experiences and that makes them very different from each other. They might as well be two different people.

Spoiler

What happened to Ji Wuyou felt like a cop-out until the final battle when it was revealed what he was. However, I still think Pei Yuzhi wasn't exactly sincere in taking him in as disciple and "reforming" him. It wasn't shown at all that he attempted to influence and reform Ji Wuyou.

The involvement of Pei Yuzhi's friends in the final battle was very anti-climactic. All of them were supposed to be revered and the most powerful of their generation, and yet they barely got any screentime in the final battle. The whole battle itself did not live up to the buildup, even the fight against the Queen Mother of the West was more interesting.

[collapse]

I feel like the ending was rushed. It was still okay but definitely not as good as the parts that preceded it. <<less

I was very interested in reading this novel because the summary looks very interesting

The MC and ML are actually the same person

So ML initially transmigrated into a novel and he became the villain "Pei Jing". The protagonist defeated him and banished him somewhere and it caused him to be twisted. He came back and killed the protagonist.

... more>> Because he killed the protagonist, the story restarted but this time, he transmigrated into another character while MC (the old version of his self) still transmigrated into "Pei Jing"

Its kinda a parallel universe thing. They are the same person but in different timelines. They each have their own personality because ML has already faced situations that caused his personality to change.

Anyhoooo I was very eager to read this novel but the progress disappointed me

It seems that there are a lot happening but the MC/ML doesn't really stand out for me

so im stopping from continuing this novel

I was also very interested in the romance aspect so I skipped read and
Spoiler

it looks like by Chap 50, the MC has already realized his feelings for MC.

Around 80, the MC confessed to ML but ML seems to not be in love yet at this time

And MC seems to don't know yet the ML is actually his other self (from a different timeline or parallel world)

I'm only on chapter 18, but let me tell you... as someone who has devoured lots of chinese webnovels, reading this one is super surreal. It's like reading an ode to MXTX's three works? You have the 'scum' master who wants to rely on the protagonist who is their disciple, the MC (Pei Jing) is a LOT like WWX with a JC counterpart, and now the ML and the MC are strolling around in a blood rain forest with an umbrella the ML provided hunting a bride-stealing ghost. IT'S SO... more>> SURREAL, because the story is actually really good and the writing is also good and all these really super weird parallels are giving me the novel equivalent of uncanny valley.

Like, I've read a LOT of cnovels, so it's not just me being most familiar with MXTX's works and therefore seeing them everywhere. It's not like this is a fanfic of MXTX's works, which is why I said an 'ode' but like yeah. Surreal.

--

I've read up to thirty four. It seems 18 is the height of that nonsense and since then there hasn't been any more weirdness. Anyway, so far it's pretty good as long as you can get through the weirdness! <<less

I haven't finished the book, just reached ch 49. But I just wanted to interject, Why do people hate the MC so much? Not every MC should be perfect, kind, all encompassing, able to save all creatures human, demon, the dead and the living, etc. They too have their own troubles, thoughts, priorities, esp someone like Pei Yuzhi ... more>>
Spoiler

who isn't someone that JUST immigrated to the book, but someone who already lived a long life there, the people surrounding him are very much real to him, more than a character in the book, and if you have someone like that in your life, compared to the protagonist whom you just know for a short while, who would take up more of the space in your thoughts and action? Ofc the ppl close to you. And unlike what was stated, even though sometimes the author mentioned the mc's kind nature, he's not without a fault, he's liked by many but also disliked by many too. Think about how can this two things exist at the same time? Because he's not perfect, he's just being himself. And this is shown clearly throughout the story, making him more than two dimensional character.

[collapse]

I found the case of people disliking the MC very similar to a korean manhwa that I read, which have very realistic characterisation for the MC. Sigh. But what should I do, I myself love this type of characters who's not perfect and full of flaws. It made them more human in my eyes..

And about the similarities with mxtx novel, there are some, but rather than mxtx, I believe it's more to do with the Chinese culture (suprise suprise... bc it's a danmei, one way or another you'll find similarities bc they derived from the same culture, mythology, believes, superstition, etc etc...). More than that, this book has some refreshing element that I don't found often in other danmei I've read (don't get me wrong, it's still follow the typical format) and it brings forward several things to ponder upon while living our ordinary daily life, and I love when reading materials have things to reflect upon, so I'll continue my read. <<less

Miss MXTX's novel characters? Then, this is one of the best to check out this August. The characters have the resemblance to WWX's attitude with a mix of XL's smile as Pei Jing/Yuzhi and LZ's attitude & HC's umbrella as Chu Junyu.

Review (Oct 25) :

OK. Been following for so long and it's time to share a bit of the story part I'm gone so far. At first, it looks like romance bud from the cold-hearted Junyu, but it obviously starts to blooms with the narcissist Pei.

Spoiler

- I love the part where they tease Pei for his bold confession and kisses towards our great Junyu who was always left stunned/frozen in place (Junyu never expected this kisses at first. It's like "what's wrong with this Pei Jing?")

- And Pei shed tears and even tripped down leaving Junyu to hug him by the waist. Poor Pei, he hurts his face.

And many more embarrassing moments! Pei, bro, you are the one! Hahaha

[collapse]

It's interesting how it develops the story and the entanglement of how much it proves the influence of Junyu brings to the faith of Pei for a better ending.

It's comedic and touching if you want a romance where you won't notice it much unless MC's mind reminded of his lover. And I guarantee that the ending is happy (I checked it first. Lol)

this novel was very intriguing. MC and the ML were intially the same person however the due to their different life experiences they are undoubtedly not the same.

the plot was thick and by thick I mean really really thick. Loved the humour and the angst. MC is so chaotic and I adored him. MC and his friends shenenigans are hilarious.

MC and ML chu junyus relationship I thought was very well balanced and well thought. They are like light and dark, yin and yang, they are themselves and they complete each... more>> other. Only they themselves can be their salvation. Only they are worthy of each other (cause uk they were initally the same person). Chu junyu letting go of his resentment for pei yuzhi was very symbolic in a sense that only u can help urself and that only u can help urself move on.

anyway to sum it up I had a good time reading this novel. Though the ending felt a tiny bit rushed it was great. <<less

It has been a really long time since I was so much into a novel. I did not get enough sleep these days, cz I just couldnt stop reading it. I guess I read some spoilers in reviews earlier cz the main mystery (the truth about the ml) was not a mystery for me, I regret reading about it, it would be more fun if I didnt know. This book made me laugh (the MC is such a c*cky pranker), this book made me cry (poor ml!), this book made... more>> me unable to stop reading cz I had to know what would happen next!

Spoiler

I feel quite sorry for the villain cz from the beginning till the end he never had a choice and never had a chance to make a choice. It was especially sad when you see that he actually had some inner strugles before he succumbed to his evil nature.

I also feel sorry for his childhood misfortunes, but to respond to one of the reviewers here who questioned why the MC never helped him directly, in my opinion, it is bcz the villain thought of others as his friends, he couldnt comprehend their true nature, so even if he felt there is smth wrong going round, he couldnt comprehend what actually was happening, and this is why the MC was doing things in the background.

Also even though the MC wanted influence him and change him to the better, he never planned to become his nanny, and in case of the villain that was what required to keep him always safe and as the reviewer proposed to be his friend. He couldnt be there for him always, so the MC just tried to create a bit better environment for him and then take him as a disciple. And even as a master he would not be attached to him at all times. He had other responsibilities too as a future sect master.

I guess you can also partially blame that this time the greater villain behind it all accelerated things, and the MC expected to have more time in accordance with original plot, while he actually did not have it.

I do not like how the trip to the ghost village ended up though. The MC took the villain with him, so the latter was his responibility at that time, but he underestimated the danger and overestimated his abilities, and even though he thought of the villain as of a protagonist with whom nothing fatal could happen, he should have been more responsible, cz his actions led to the villain being hurt physically and psychologically, and I did not see much remorse from the MC afterwards.
[collapse]

Other than that I really loved the mc's character, cz while being over-confident and over-selfpraising, his cheecky personality made him also quite adorable. Even the ML who understood the mc's faults the best could not help falling for him anyway. Cz despite of all the above said, he was also kind, brave and selfless.

In overall I am pretty sure there have been some faults with the novel, but I still loved it so much and I am still so excited about it, that I can not name any. <<less
