Wandering for fifteen years, Jiang Sheng picked up five elder brothers for herself.

For their sake, little Jiang Sheng went through fire and water, desperately making money.

The elder brothers didn’t disappoint her, giving everything for their little sister.

Until the General’s mansion discovered the switch of the legitimate daughter, and hastily brought her back.

But they didn’t treat her well either.

Some ridiculed her vulgarity, some laughed at her ignorance, some scorned her coarseness.

Yet no one knew, the new top scholar was her brother, the newly rich royal merchant was her brother, the returning victorious little general was her brother, the saintly healer was her brother, and that one… was also her brother.

However capable the fake young miss is, does she have five elder brothers to support her?

Note: The main characters have no romantic relationships, the female lead has a childish personality and focuses on familial love!!!

Fluffy, cute story about a little street girl who collects orphans/abandoned boys and their struggles and triumphs to the top. Villains aren't too annoying, and some even become good people. So far, so good. No angst, just enjoyable reading.

Update: After chapter 157, I finished reading with MTL - Really enjoyed this novel, it was an even-paced historical novel. There is almost no romance, it's mainly a rags to riches story of a young girl and her ragtag brothers and how they slowly get ... more>>

rich/powerful/revenge/justice.

At the very end of the novel, the MC is 15, and her and her brothers have all found their place in the world, but are all single. There is a large cast (especially in the Capital, Fengjing) and the side characters and development were satisfying.

From the village to the town to the city to the Capital to the aristocracy to the imperial family, the story slowly unfolds on the little ragtag family and their hidden backgrounds.

The epilogue chapters are good too, but I could only find a few. I hope the translator can do them all.

Reading the sypnosis it seems like the focus is little Jiang Sheng but it is not. This is a story with multiple protagonists. The world building is slow but not as repetitive. A mix of slice and life, business, and politics. Growth happens because life gives you challenges.

For me I liked how the villains characters are portrayed. They seem liked real people. For example the fake miss, sure she is a bit malicious but it's hard to blame her. A kid who was loved by her family but everything changed... more>> when the truth came up. She became riddled by insecurities then turning her character into something malicous however even she was just also a victim of circumstances.

Author slowly created a world by telling us the POV of multiple characters. The downside is that they do overshadow the kind female lead. Her character is unique but simple. She remains like a loving supportive sister with emphathy and occasional good ideas. She doesn't get a lot of growth however she is already strong from the very beginning. Kindness seems s*upid but it is also her greatest strength.

A lot of villains strayed from the right path because they are full of darkness in their heart but MC still retains this even if life was initially hard on her. Everyone has their ups and downs the difference is if you focus your view on light or darkside of life. <<less

Really love this one. Really digs into ideals, morals, and life experiences. An idealized world, but without shying away from the darkness brewed by the world one wants to idealize.

(Having said, prepare a bucket of tissues bc PEOPLE f*ckING HEARTBREAKINGLY DIE WHEN THEY DO AAAAAAAAHH.)

There truly was struggling, like a shounen manga doing level ups to fight bigger bads, but written plainly with thoughts so it feels like a genuine life, not some random Mary/Gary Stu unlocking a new power move. I'm usually not a fan of power creeps bc it easily harms world-building, creating plot holes, if not done right. But this time, I wouldn't have even noticed it until the kids looked back on the past. In the end, I just become proud and happy for them, if a bit of heartache for their struggles to reach their heights.

As for some of the comments I glanced over in other reviews, a bit of spoilers to counter:

Romance
Spoiler

No romance, please look at the tags.

Spoiler

Jiang Sheng never fully goes back to the Jiang family, it's not a matter of being slow. She just has a family she never leaves in the first place.

Spoiler

This is a family-orientated tale, both found family and blood family.

MC
Spoiler

Our MC, my baby Jiang Sheng, is but one character out of an assemble cast. She has a focus, but she is not the focus.

I repeat, this is not a romance. Not a rom-com, not a childhood sweetheart take, not a phoenix rising to meet a dragon, or a 'doting CEO, weather is cold, bankrupt someone'-isk romance, NADA.

[collapse]

Having said all that, there really might be people who find this against their tastes.

You could call it slow-paced, an upswing of status built on a lifetime (however short) of work, but it is not filler. It is not suspense for suspense, it is details based and formed into a bigger picture, growth made from growth. But some might just find it too slow-paced for them, so if you think you won't like it, I still suggest trying some chapters to see if it'll fit you anyways.

Because I applaud this author for digging so well into human psychology, the patriotism of soldiers, the non-black and white of human lives. While still making me agree and wish my babies grow up well, like a fluffy cotton cat that you just want to stuff your face in all the time, even if you need to go on a business trip to support them. (Disclaimer, I have no kitties or business trips.)

You might have wanted a final doting ML, rather a loving found family, both blooded and not. There is no one to sweep away troubles, one single hand to withstand all blades at all times. One to simply sweep the FL off her feet from one second to the next. This is an assemble cast. I ask you take a chance on my roster of found siblings before you decide a single ML is all you need for love.

TL;DR: NO ROMANCE, look at the tags. FOUND FAMILY BASED, look at my babies grow. Slow-paced or well-done non-filler storyline, depending on view point. Solid 5⭐️s in my view. <<less

This is great novel for those who wants a relaxing read. There are many high stakes, but most of the conflicts are resolved quickly so there inst a lot of buildup. The MCs are all very supportive of each other.

It is also incredibly long though 😅

The extra chapters also end abruptly.

A more accurate translation for the title might be: "After Picking Up Five Brothers, No One in the Capital Dares Offend Me".

The story itself is pretty cute, although I have difficulty giving it a full 5. Despite interesting events cropping up, it drags on somewhat.

What the author is quite good at is complex characters. Some of the villains are 2D, but a good number are actually quite easy to sympathize with. I am in the same boat as another reviewer who felt that Jiang Sheng could really have done with... more>> some character development, but it does seem like there is some mystery behind her swap as an infant, which might lead us somewhere! <<less

MC picks up brothers like a farmer picks up cabbages off the ground. She finds 5 new brothers in the span of days and they all go home with her like some lost puppies with no questions asked.

First of all, NO CP. This is purely a family relationship novel.

I can't really comment on whether I like it or not. I like some parts, I hate others.

What I like in this novel is how karma is presented. It also illustrates acceptance and letting go.

omg This novel is something!! It feels like watching your kids grow up.

Character development is cohesive, each siblings have their own development arc, and all are well written.

like the 2nd prince and Fang Yuan when they k/lled the nomad's 3rd prince. Or the swapped daughter

[collapse]

There are some scenes that doesnt make sense to me tho eg

Spoiler

When the swapped daughter fall off the ledge, how could her handmaid just not see her walking to the ledge?? Author wrote this scene wholly from the perspective of the fake daughter, and even with how chaotic things were at the scene, how could anyone not noticed?

Another one where 4th brother's first mentor, Dr Wu, was supposedly sent by the emperor to supervise/aid the 5th brother. If Dr Wu was just a wandering retired imperial physician who had once had superb influence, I would accept that as it is. But then it was described that Dr Wu was young, and apparently hes from a clan that the emperor confided in making it that the emperor was watching 5th brother from afar like an awkward expression of love.., it just feels like Author was trying to give 5th brother another bond tht chains him. EVEN THOUGH, it was claimed repeatedly that emperor has casted all his love to the eldest prince. Contradicting lol

Also I was hoping that

Fufeng would live and be with them 😭😭

Look, it’s decently cute and the brothers’ plot is interesting enough to keep me reading, but I think potential new readers should know that it’s been 330 chapters and yet little Jiang Sheng is still not a permanent resident of the Jiang estate. I like slow plots but this one is really really slow.

Okay so I had to MTL the novel till the current chapter sacrificing sleep and it was worth it. The ML is very age-appropriate and what I mean is that she acts her age but is just a little clever and cautious because she is from the street. The way she gets her brothers is also very realistic and so is their growing up. The characters are very real, and the real and fake daughter tussle has not started yet. There is no love angle, though I have a sneaky... more>> feeling it is going to be Brother no 5 whose identity is not clear as of yet. This was a promising novel but the author's efforts to prolong the story resulted to too many filler chapters.

The MC and her brothers will encounter a problem that they can only passively react to and not totally resolved so they had to move to another place where they will again face other problems beyond their means and abilities to tackle. When the author finally decided that the novel's length was enough, all the problems were taken cared off in a chapter or 2.

I never shy away from a long read and I'm glad I decided to read this. MC is well thought out as well as her brothers and everything actually does seem plausible... by webnovel standards lol. I enjoyed every bit of this. This is PURELY familial love. I know a lot of stories start of like that and don't end up like that but this isn't one of those...

I will say that, like someone else had pointed out, the extra chapters seem to end abruptly. I WANT MORE. Like I... more>> want more closure to it all.

If you like watching kids grow up, this is it. If you like family bonds even when they're not related, aka chosen family, this is it.

All in all. I say, READ IT!!! I regret nothing in going to work late cuz I stayed up and overslept for this. <<less

YOU SHOULD READ THIS NOVEL.

Feels like the most dog blood novel I've read. It is fluffy, heartwarming, and you can gain a lot of lessons. I think this was fate, me finding this read, cos the lessons in life resonates alright. But sfgjkdhgjs. IT'S SO GOOD. Because it left me with mixed feelings, like man 😭 okay.

4.27 Stars

Date Read: 1/3/2025

Personal Enjoyment: 4/5

... more>> Quite enjoyed it. But it's getting into a palace arc and despite all that happened, it still feels like they have to fight to thrive in peace. Which is getting a bit far from the cosy, family feels, wish fulfilment escapism I was looking for. So I'm halting at this point.

Plot: 4.5/5

Very good actually. The plot is pretty solid for a light novel especially the poor to rich kind and especially for something so long.

Writing/Translation: 3.9/5

The translation I read is from akknovel. So it's edited MTL. Lots and lots of pronoun errors and wrong names. But still easily substituted in your head as you read.

Pacing: 4.2/5

It's like every time I get a little bored, the next chapter something interesting happens lol. But I wish the sense of safety and not having something hanging over their heads would ease up. As it is, it always felt like something bigger is always out there to crush them.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4.3/5

Pretty solid. I love the detail in their business and money-making. Those are detailed and fun.

Characters: 4.7/5

Wonderful characters. All of them. Good guys and bad.

I love this book and highly recommend it. This is a family focused novel, both blood and found family, how the greatest support doesn't necessarily have to be related and how blood relations can sometimes be more wicked than strangers.

i laughed, I cried, I got angry the author is quite good at stirring emotions but it wasn't dog blood drama that only infuriates you. It's not just family bond but each character grows over time, it's not instant success. The kids face hurdles like poverty, business competitiveness, lack of connection,... more>> setbacks but they always keep trying because they know there are people behind them supporting them. I will admit that it could get a bit dry and boring whenever it was focused on Xu MO's struggles with corruption within the exams or the imperial court but you gotta push through. It's well worth it. There really isn't any real romance perhaps so childhood affection but not a single child character is married or put in an arranged marriage agreement by the end.

I liked Jiang Sheng she was cute, a bit naive at times but she matures to step up and properly guard her family while still maintaining her unique personality. I cried for her since it's hard for her to lose some of her habits from when she was a poor street orphan, but that makes up her core being along with her brother guidance. All she wants to do is help people like how she wished to be helped whether it's the orphaned children or abus3d wives trying to leave their marriages and live well with their daughters. But not at the cost of harming her own family. Her grandma really loved her and did her best to protect her happiness rather than drag her into family drama. Oh her cousins were cool too, her paternal female cousin was a chatterbox with a crows mouth but she could also kick butt. Her maternal female cousin was so loving and the perfect woman to look up to.

It's a pity what happened to the fake daughter.

Spoiler

the fake daughter felt like her world was crumbling after JS was brought back, her brother tried to be fair to both of them but she was greedy and wanted him to be on one sided - hers. Granny loved JS only, even the dad was partial to JS visiting her instead of the family secretly before seeing the emperor. She could be a bit selfish but other than a bit of bullying she did before anyone knew JS was the real daughter, she didn't do harm. The mom was the one making schemes and showing preference to the fake girl. Only the mom was on her side up until it was discovered her maternal family made a scheme for the mom to abandon JS under the guise that granny's maternal family already did a switch and her child was d3ad all so she would raise her sisters daughter as her own. She went mad after they proved she was lied to. The poor fake daughter (sorry I can't remember her name) ended up feeling there was nothing left and after her cousin told her to leave their marriages Jiang family she did... through death. But none of them ever wanted her to suffer; other than the cousin being harsh and telling her to return to her bio family, the others were willing to let her stay with the jiang identity and protection. But she was too focused on her misery to listen.

[collapse]

I liked all the brothers and seeing them grow into men, ah I feel like a proud auntie. Even when the mantle they were taking up was more a heavy burden or willingly giving up the freedom they craved for the greater good. 5th boy was probably my favorite brother. But still... My favorite male character ended up being Fufeng even if his time was short. He really left a lasting impression on me.

Spoiler

Fufeng was Xu MO's love interest if this was a different genre they would definitely. Because they have scenes that any other couple whether straight or queer would be romantic but this novel isn't about romance. But they got moments where they yearning for each other, promising to live life to the fullest for them (Fufeng is sickly and fated to die young 😭 he died way too soon those evil family of his made it so) they once stared at each other part way through a conversation almost forgetting there were others in the room Xu Mo himself called Fufeng his soul mate 😭😭😭 other than his family he would never bend the rules or do something that went against his principles but for Fufeng he did. Xu Mo has a kind righteous and just heart but for avenging his soulmate he did do some cruel things. The revenge against the wang family was good within the laws but to the heaviest punishment save for the girl cousin. I almost felt bad for her on how she passed but was reminded how she treated both 3rd brother and Fufeng, trying to drive them to d3ath.

In my heart Xu Mo immortalized Fufeng in his heart as a white moonlight even I was moved when Fufeng decided to use his last moments to incited rebellion against the crown for corruption in the government all while dressed in white and playing the zither (? Or something similar) the d3ath scene only moments after had me crying so hard and the burial chapters afterwards too.

[collapse]

My biggest criticism would be how much was done in the last 50 or so chapters. Like putting a war/fighting for the throne right at the end instead of somewhere within the 300th or 400th chapter range. It just felt like too much right at the end, too many twists and turns. But a few emotional reveals as well proving that the emperor wasn't 100% SoB to his kids. it was entertaining sure but I never really like it when authors do that because I feel like it can leave too many things unresolved. Most thing were thankfully but past experiences had me worried. What annoyed me the most were the last dozen or so, if they were labeled as extras I probably would have accepted them better otherwise it left too much open and like an abrupt end. it felt like unnecessary filler quite literally at the end with nowhere to go but that the author put in because they felt bad for focusing on 1st, 3rd and 5th brothers for a good majority of the book. Honestly 4th boy got the least about of screen time and little growth so it felt like a pity chapter to show he did do something with his skills. 2nd boy had more screen time compared to him but still less than the other three
Spoiler

finding out who his father was, that was soo irrelevant. They had him cut off ties with his mother long ago and I doubt any reader was interested in what random man was visiting brothels 16 years back. Maybe if he had been introduced earlier and add a bit of a dog blood to the plot it would have been fine but not in the last ten chapters.

This novel is so good 😭

I was a bit skeptical at first since there are over 500 chapters for this novel and I'm afraid that I'll get bored halfway through reading it but nope, I was not bored at all while reading.

This novel has everything, the rags to riches troupe, swapped at birth, face slapping moments, and even palace intrigues.

The story is very well paced, with various arcs that keep me in the edge of my seat. I found some plot holes throughout the story though, but thankfully, it's very... more>> minor and didn't tamper with my reading experience.

The story starts on a lighthearted note, but the story would be a bit of a heavy read towards the end. I really love how the story tackles subjects like wars, struggle for the throne, court intrigues and familial affection. All of them were *chef's kiss and not gonna lie, I cried a lot during the later chapters.

I really liked all of the characters. All of them, including the villains are very well-written. The MC is very likeable, I love her so much. Other characters are also very likeable, noticeably her brothers and also her Jiang family members.

Although there are some antagonists who are truly vicious by nature, most of the antagonist in this story has their depth and their own reasons to go against the main characters, and that's what I like the most about them.

Unfortunately, the translation for this is a bit off, but still readable (like a better version of an MTL). Also, I kinda hope the side stories would give us an insight to our MC and her brothers' love lives but we got none of that 😕.

All in all, I loved this novel very much and I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who loved historical chinese novel. <<less

Highly recommend!!

1st of all.. The novel was about the FL & her 5 MC brothers.

The author did a good job for digging out each of their characters and didn't leave anyone behind each other shadows.

The FL, an orphan.. Living on the streets until at the age of 7. Although she had experience a hard life, she never give up & have a very optimistic character. When she founded by her original family, also found out how she's been leave out on the street by her own mother, she still didn't... more>> bear any grudge & keep on moving forward with her own life.

Overall, I love the FL, although she was childish, but she's not entirely foolish.

Spoiler

unlike those in other novels, most of their FL are so r*etardly-childish.. Haha

[collapse]

as for her 5 MC brother, each come out with their own story..

Even the side characters have their time to shine out.

More importantly, although they are the Main Character.. Their MC-hallo are not too over the top & the face slapping was not too much. There is sometime they missed out optiunity to 'end off' their enemies.

2ndly, The Story plots.

The author did a very good job. The story plot was very nicely arranged.

my only regard was that the story was cut off just like that.. LOL (now I hv to imagine their continuation my self.. Hah) <<less

Though not the best novel I read but still worth reading once

The best part is there are no romantic interests for any of siblings or between siblings it's full of family affection

The description of novel seems like family drama but it's not and the brothers achieve high status only at the end.

The most unrealistic part is how soon the siblings take-up to eachother

A lovely story about striving to overcome the odds. Told by a multitude of core characters. It's a story that spans over several years with small timeskips. There is no big faceslapping moments or romance. It's just a story about a family making their way to the top. It's a very natural progression and as a reader, you'll just want to root for them. No one is super OP, nothing comes easy for the protagonists. Antagonists are not too s*upid too and they have their own reasons for doing things.... more>> Which is why this story is a great read.

This story starts with the struggles of the female lead Jiang Sheng. She's a little beggar who just wants to survive. She encounters 5 boys with struggles of their own, and brings them back to her little dilapidated home to help them. Jiang Sheng doesn't have much, she only has a big heart of gold and lots of compassion. She's also very lonely and her desire to save those boys are also tinged with a little longing for a family of her own.

So Jiang Sheng, a 7 year old girl, works really hard alongside 5 other older boys to survive.

Each of the boys have their own backstories too and as the novel progresses, each one is laid out.

I'll just give a brief summary:

Xu Mo:

Spoiler

The oldest of the bunch. His father was the magistrate and wrongly accused of treachery and bribery. Parents unalived themselves and Xu Mo's legs were crippled. He wants revenge. He's a straight-laced kind of guy, very honest, very upright but eventually learns that he has to bend to cater to the situation. He's a scholar and very diligent. Lots of people try to harm him but he fights his way to become the top scholar.

[collapse]

Zheng Ruqian:

Spoiler

His mother was a prostit*te and he lived in the pleasure house with her till they found that he wasn't good looking and very useless so they kicked him out and abandoned him. This 2nd brother was a crybaby and super timid in the beginning. He had great character growth and eventually became a brave, cunning merchant. He's the one who helped bring in the riches imo.

[collapse]

Fang Heng:

Spoiler

His troubles caused the most issues for all the siblings haha. But like they said in the novel, since they've stuck together as a family, his troubles are theirs to help solve too. He is the son of a great General who died at battle. His mother died of depression and initially sought the help of her maternal family to raise him. But both the Fang family and his maternal family were corrupt and wanted to kill him. They're both powerful families that caused the kids a lot of trouble. Fang Heng is the strong martial artist in the family and later leaves to go to the border to get stronger. He eventually becomes a young general, following his father's footsteps.

[collapse]

Wen Zhiyun:

Spoiler

Soft-spoken, sweet boy. He was the pampered child of his parents who were doctors. They were wrongfully killed for a petty reason. Zhu Zhi, the man who cause Xu Mo's death, wanted 4th brother's father to treat his concubine. Dr Wen refused and he and his wife were killed for that reason. Wen Zhiyun later takes on his father's mantel too and learned medicine. He's the sweet healer of the group. He's often forgotten but actually he plays a role in the novel too. Despite his timid nature, he drives himself to work harder to help his siblings and at some moments, he's actually very daring and brave. I love that he tries so hard to push himself despite his introvert nature, just to lend a helping hand in the family's troubles.

Chang Yan:

Spoiler

This boy is a black-bellied scheming bun. He's gorgeous, androgynous. Doesn't seem to want to do anything. He just goes with the flow but he ends up being the strategist in the family, often consulting with eldest brother Xu Mo to solve problems. He gives advice here and there to help out. Eventually the last arc is focused a lot on him, regarding the political battles and intrigues as he's the 5th Prince.

Jiang Sheng:

Spoiler

She's the light of her brother's life. She's the one who gives sound advice that helps awaken the brothers' from their darkness. She's so optimistic and full of life. She ends up being the real daughter of a prominent Jiang family swapped out due to a foolish scheme. She does not hate the fake daughter nor is there any s*upid faceslapping involved. She ends up still staying with her adoptive brothers but having an additional grandma and father to support her in her endeavors.

There are also many interesting side characters that pop up here and there. Like Changyu, Fang Yuan, Wang Fufeng... They're all so interesting with some antagonists with two sides to them. Nothing is ever just black and white. Including that character Jiang Chenghua, the false daughter. She was pitiful and her ending tragic.

Despite reviews mentioning that the last arc was rushed, I didn't think so. I really liked the political intrigue in this novel and how everyone isn't just black & white but shades of grey. Even the Emperor is not perfect and this novel demonstrates it nicely.

My complain is the translation. It's like MTL but better edited. Yet, pronouns are sometimes wrong. Names are also wrongly used in certain chapters. For the last arc which is the battle of the throne, it can get super confusing because the translation often uses wrong names. Instead of Fourth Brother indicating Wen Zhiyun, the translation might become Fourth Imperial Brother which is another person entirely. This made me confused as to what was really happening at the time but I just breezed through the chapters and got the gist of it. What a pity. If the translation is better, with more explanations about the terms used or the poetry, it would be an even better read.

Still giving it a 5 because wow, this is an amazing novel. <<less
