He Yu is Gu Yan’s cousin, while Shen Huaili is Shen Jinnian’s older brother.

Shen Huaili falls into an induced coma due to psychological and physical issues after fainting from the shock of losing his family’s empire to Lu Siming (SH’s ex-s*xual partner and secretary) and then collapsing down the stairs.

He Yu is hired by his cousin to handle everything related to Shen Huaili—hospital expenses, settling the Shen family’s debts, recovering their assets (including the company), and even staying by SH’s side as his hospital companion while he was in a coma.

After SH wakes up, He Yu continues working as his caretaker.

He Yu is quite coquette with Shen Huaili, clearly enjoying his job as his caretaker—claiming it’s easier than working with Gu Yan.

The first real hint of something more between them happens when Lu Siming shows up during the family’s New Year celebration, insisting on talking to Shen Huaili even though no one in the family dares to let him near (Lu not only bankrupted the Shen family by taking their company but also subjected SH to s*xual situations that worsened his mental health—many of which he recorded without SH’s consent. And when SH tried to break up, Lu refused). Before confronting Lu, Shen Huaili grabs He Yu’s hand right in front of him.

I consider this the first real clue, but I was already shipping them before they even met. When He Yu gets visibly flustered watching Shen Jinnian and Gu Yan being intimate in front of him, and later we find out he’s a 30-year-old virg*n... I immediately imagined HY and SH getting close after SH woke up. By the time that possibility became real, I was already head over heels for them.

Anyway, moving on—the part that made me cry the most in 2025. Even though SH held HY’s hand and told Lu Siming that the person he likes and needs is HY, they weren’t actually in a romantic relationship. When HY’s feelings for SH start blooming, it’s obvious to the whole family because our Yuyu is a fool who can’t hide his affection through his caretaking.

But, like I said, his feelings were just beginning to grow, and He Yu is an silly. Jinnian repeatedly cornered He Yu to make him admit he likes Shen Huaili, and HY has known the answer since the first time—but he wasn’t ready to confess, which is totally understandable since this is his first love and he doesn’t even fully understand these new emotions. In my interpretation, there was unnecessary pressure forcing him to admit his feelings.

So what happens when Shen Huaili himself insists that He Yu confess? In a moment of impulsiveness, HY delivers the most beautiful love confession (in my eyes, because He Yu is my favorite character, and when he said, "You can control everything—even me. I might be a little s*upid, but this is the safest way I could think of (to prove my feelings) , " I cried from sheer emotion) . But Shen Huaili has an anxiety attack because it’s too soon for him—he’s still dealing with the trauma from his past relationship, his own emotions, and now someone else’s feelings.

Shen Huaili refuses to see He Yu afterward, and HY blames himself for making SH feel worse. It genuinely broke my heart because He Yu isn’t at fault—he really tried not to answer, he shouldn’t feel guilty for being honest after so much pressure.

They only speak again two months later, when He Yu stops the ex-husband of Jinnian’s friend’s spouse from smashing a glass bottle on Shen Huaili. After that, HY resumes taking care of SH, practically moving into his house and even learning to cook for him. Neither of them brings up what happened two months prior, and they go back to how things should have been from the start—just happily keeping each other company without rushing to define anything. He Yu is determined to love and care for Huaili until SH is ready to take the first step.

In the final extra, it’s the birthday of Gu Yan and Shen Jinnian’s second baby. Shen Huaili asks He Yu if he wants to take a photo with him, Jinnian, and the baby. HY replies that to be in the photo, he’d have to be a direct relative—but he’s just Gu Yan’s cousin.

So Shen Huaili agrees and goes to take the photos, but then he comes back and asks, "Do you want to be my family for a day?"

He Yu takes the photo as the baby’s uncle—Shen Huaili’s partner. Even if just for a day, he’s overjoyed. The novel ends with this feeling of happiness, sweetness, and hope. It’s just so heartwarming—I fell completely in love with He Yu and Shen Huaili.

My favorite scenes:

• When Shen Huaili pretends to be asleep, and He Yu, not realizing, leans in to kiss his forehead but stops himself—instead kissing the back of his own hand over SH’s forehead.

I’m sure Huaili’s heart melted here. After an ex who never took "no" for an answer and did whatever he wanted with SH’s body, he now sees He Yu—who kisses his own hand just to symbolize a kiss on SH’s forehead. THEY’RE TOO PRECIOUS!!

• When Shen Huaili finds He Yu burning up with fever, and HY, delirious, begs him not to care about "that idiot Lu Siming."

He Yu was literally dying of jealousy after Lu Siming sent Shen Huaili a romantic gift.

• When He Yu bought a cabin just to watch Shen Huaili from afar because SH didn’t want to see or talk to him.

I laughed so hard because Gu Yan’s reaction was, "Seriously, you did that?"—judging him as if he hadn’t been stalking Shen Jinnian for over a decade.

The only thing that made me sad was that, apparently, our protagonists never went back to college after Shen Huaili’s accident. I get that their lives were turned upside down because of the baby, the accident, and the kidnapping. But I really would’ve loved to laugh at the college classmates’ reactions upon seeing that, "overnight, " the sworn enemies had gotten married at the courthouse, had a child, and Jinnian was marked by Yan.
