After Rebirth, I Married The Frail Empress

In her previous life, Qin Su served the country as a princess, fought in wars, and defended the throne for her imperial brother. In the end, however, she was ambushed and assassinated by the very brother she supported, facing rebellion and estrangement. Only the weak and ailing empress, whom she had never held in high regard, stood in front of her and took the arrows meant for her.

In her second chance at life, Qin Su didn’t want to be the prestigious eldest princess or the war goddess anymore. She just thought that the emperor’s dragon throne looked nice. On the side, she decided to protect the fragile empress, or rather, Miss Shen in this lifetime.

From the perspective of this life—

Shen Yi, since childhood, was frail. During a snowstorm, while accompanying her father to the capital, she was ambushed. In a critical moment, a red figure descended from the sky, saving her life but leaving her heart lost.

Shen Yi stumbled along behind that person, and even though she never turned around, she was content.

Later, Qin Su, adorned in dragon robes and crowned, married her empress in front of her ancestors.

  • I’ve never written a review before so treat this like a comment from a fellow reader here.
- The protagonist, Qin Su, is a strong, decisive and clear minded person. She is the only legitimate daughter of the Emperor and the empress.

- The female lead, Shen Yi, is smart, caring, humble but physically frail due to her chronic illness that she got from birth. She is also very literary smart. And it still didn’t make her realise the feelings she has for Qin Su. To the review,

Just based from the... more>> title, many would think that the pair would get together immediately, right? Yes, but no. Obviously, our protagonist is confused but grateful about the frail female lead protecting her so she tries to stay close to her and watch out for her. But because the story is set in a setting where homos*xual relationships are considered unethical and being far and between, our future couple didn’t even consider it for a long time. I’m at chapter 28 and they are still not considering it. TwT.

Anyways, this is where the story’s two of three main features come in: the slowburn and the fluff. The third feature is the kingdom’s political conspiracies brewing slowly and created by one or many brothers of the protagonist most of whom hates and are jealous of her.

The slowburn is absolutely delicious because we know they will get together just from the title but we don’t know how or when. The romance is also plenty there but our couple just needs to realise it. The fluff? The protagonist doesn’t really want to leave the female lead’s side. That should tell you about the many fluff you are about to find. <<less

It's good so far, while it's not exactly the most original story out there, the writing and pace makes up for it, the slow burn has been good and the fluff is there, while the conspiracy plot is going in an interesting direction!

So far it has been an interesting story. Well written & slow pace at times as we see more of the story based around the 2 FL as we see them slowly get closer as their feelings start to show. Qin Su trying to weave her way around the behind the scenes palace/country issues, while trying to protect Shen Yi's health to help her survive, as Shen Yi gave up her life to try to save Qin Su in the original life.

Apart from translation errors with pronouns, the plot is not bad and the characters are likeable. MC may have started off strong, but she also showed great growth considering what had happened in the previous life.

It is a pretty good read and some parts were particularly moving. Very good, very good. Definitely would recommend.

The story is ok. The slowburn is strong with this one. The MC and FL interacted here and there but don't expect a lot of fluff. The translator made a lot of pronouns mistakes, 'she' was mistakenly called 'he' and nice versa. There are a lot of characters. I sometimes lost tracks of who were who.

For personality, MC is very smart and cunning which I like a lot. She knows what she wants (her lover) and works hard for it. She also has a lot of ambitions and her schemes... more>> are well developed.

The FL is the typical love interest, fragile, smart, kind. In the beginning, she wasn't very interesting but her character developed more.

Overall, the story is mostly about politics, war and (non romantic) drama. Don't read this if you want a lot of fluff and between the two leads.. <<less

3.5 rounded off to 4. Overall, a very enjoyable read.

This story has so, so much potential but it becomes convoluted because the author keeps adding subplots and twist after twist but they are not executed very well. Some of the subplots have the potential to be more interesting, but it feels like the author lost steam halfway through and quickly rush to finish the subplots to move on to the next one/main plot. I believe some elements just got forgotten or resolved somewhere at the background of the main plot,... more>> not even mentioned in the text and we're supposed to just accept this.

Some spoiler:

Spoiler

Jin Lie, the crown "prince" of Fuang Liang was poisoned with gu by Hua Xi, but somehow this was never mentioned again in the later part of the story. Most likely his skilled healer

Spoiler

Luo Yun

[collapse]

Some of the interesting characters are also underutilized and it seems like they have been forgotten until suddenly the author brings them back closer to the ending to tie things up/advance the plot.

Spoiler

Qin Jing was supposed to be Win Su's loyal guard/retainer, but she was sent away for most of the story and started a relationship with another woman in the background? And we didn't get to see much of the relationship in the end, just have to assume that they got their happily ever after.

Also, I'm convinced the author forgot completely about Yang Yi's existence and had to play it off as she and Shen Yi had drifted apart... which really sucks because of how loyal and fiercely protective Yang Yi is of Shen Yi. At least the author remembers to bring back towards the end, I suppose.

Big bad Qin Yan from the previous life was more like an annoying mosquito in this one and the ninth prince could've been a more interesting character but I'm pretty sure the author just included him for That Jealousy Scene.

[collapse]

This reminds me of JWQS at times (hard not to, considering the main theme of throne struggles between siblings and the female emperor (empress) winning. Unfortunate that it falls short compared to JWQS, it could've been so much better if the author doesn't insist on adding these "twists" that ultimately don't really impact the story.

Like Shen Yi being Shen Jingyan's daughter. Huh? If it's to make her setting as a traitor's daughter, Prime Minister Shen could've already been bad enough but noooo she had to be the daughter of Shen Jingyan with another woman we never know or supposed to care about despite him supposedly starting a rebellion because Empress Deren got pregnant and he's so in love with her

[collapse]

Longer rants than expected on the spoilers but despite all its weaknesses, it's a good read. There is a lot of care into the relationship between our main characters and they feel quite immature sometimes, especially at the beginning (makes sense, since they're only about 16-17 year old) but they grow and fight for each other and love fiercely and aren't that all the elements we want for a good wlw story?

Some notes on the translation: I'm so, utterly grateful for the translator's hard work and their dedicated to translating more baihe novels on their site but this story could've benefited from some proofreading as the names and pronouns got mixed up/changed sometimes which can be quite confusing. I see that they're releasing an edited version for their patreon (?) which is awesome. <<less
