Chu Zhaohuai had a few relatives and a weak body. The imperial teacher once predicted for him that he would go through a calamity at the age of eighteen, but if he could pass through it, he would have a smooth life.

Just after his eighteenth birthday, he was abandoned by his family, and they plotted to marry him to the evil spirit feared by everyone in the capital and sent him to death.

——It is rumoured that the evil spirit Ji Xun was seriously injured on the battlefield, and killed people like crazy when he encounters a mad attack.

Chu Zhaohuai: “…”

Fortunately, the evil spirit will not live long, so as long as he can survive until Ji Xun dies, he can get through this calamity.

Chu Zhaohuai prayed to the gods and Buddhas, hoping that Ji Xun would ascend to heaven and reach paradise soon. He sought his fortune at the Huguo Temple, who predicted: “His Highness is in good health”, and got the worst fortune. Chu Zhaohuai was so agitated that tears welled up in his eyes.

Ji Xun saw the tears in his eyes, and his heart was moved.

Is he so deeply in love with him?

***

“The evil spirit marries a man” has been talked about by people in the capital recently, and they all think that the “Princess” may not survive for more than three months.

Who would have thought that the evil spirit, who has always been sinister, would become soft and considerate to Chu Zhaohuai. When in danger, he would become furious for his beloved. Even when he goes insane, he does not hurt him at all.

Chu Zhaohuai has never been valued so much before, and he was flattered. He made up his mind:

if he does not die after the calamity, he would spend the rest of his life with Ji Xun.

But later Ji Xun died.

Chu Zhaohuai kept vigil for three days on a snowy night, his heart was as dead as a dead tree.

***

The situation in the capital changed, and the new emperor ascended the throne.

The sickly beauty was dressed in mourning, and he was lost and had nowhere to go with his deceased husband’s belongings. People with bad intentions in the capital coveted him and tried to occupy him.

Until the man in black clothes was surrounded by people, everyone knelt on the ground and shouted long live Your Majesty.

——It turned out to be Ji Xun who had faked his death, and now rules the world.

Just when everyone thought Chu Zhaohuai would be overjoyed because his “deceased husband” has come back to life, they saw Chu Zhaohuai staggering and kneeling down to salute him, calling him:

“Your Majesty.” The face of the high and mighty emperor suddenly turned pale.

i thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Half the novel is available for free (the translation is very good and enjoyable to read), while I read the raw MTL - I only did this because I can understand the raws so I could refer to the original when the MTL was incomprehensible, I don't rly recommend it otherwise.

my review will be rife with spoilers, however vague, so please read at your own discretion.

now onto the story itself: this was a truly well thought out novel. It's clear the author spent a lot... more>> of effort thinking it through and exploring chu zhaohuai and ji xun's relationship. Ji xun is the typical overbearing, arrogant prince - except he's not, because he f*cks up, and he has to learn (painfully) that he can't forcefully clip chu zhaohuai's wings. Precisely because he loves him, he has to let him go, and allow chu zhaohuai to make his own decisions and be his own person despite ji xun wanting to shield him from everything.

chu zhaohuai is deeply insecure due to the lack of love he's received his whole life. The power dynamics are cliche at first; jx is around 10? Years older than czh, jx is a powerful prince (brother of the emperor) while czh is unfavoured, jx is cunning while czh could be described as naive. However, czh is also deeply sensitive and discerning. He's much more acutely aware of what's going on than others give him credit for, which is where the struggle between his emotions and rationality come into play where he knows jx is doing it for his own good but he still feels hurt. He tries to convince himself that it's fine, but ultimately, he's still upset and jx gives him the freedom to express that.
Spoiler

after jx fake dies as part of his scheme to take over the throne, czh cannot forgive him (this is the second time czh has been 'caught up' in one of jx's schemes so he feels like a helpless pawn, not helped by the fact that he already feels powerless in front of the imperial family and jx). Czh wrestles with his own feelings for jx as he clearly likes him but is also deeply hurt. This culminates in a heart-rending moment where czh sobs to jx that 'i like you, so let me go'.

[collapse]

jx, like other obsessive gongs that I and many other readers enjoy, entertains thoughts of 'breaking his legs so he can't run away' amid many other deep-seated instincts that urge him to keep czh by his side. But in the end, no matter how much jx tried to shield and protect czh, czh ultimately still got caught up and hurt by his schemes. Czh asks jx multiple times, "am I a bird you keep in a cage?" I respect that jx curbed his instincts and genuinely let czh go - to build his character (czh was still so young, not yet 18), and get over his depression/trauma by seeing the world and pursuing what czh wanted, not what jx wanted (aka to keep czh protected by his side). At one point, when jx is worrying about how czh will survive on his own, he realises that czh *has* already survived the past 17 years on his own, without him, and he's not as fragile as jx thinks he is.

this is also the point where I had to re-check the tags that this wasn't a tragedy 😅

Spoiler

though after jx let czh go, I'm happy that he still continued to check on czh and didn't totally flop back and give up on him. We love our obsessive gongs right?

[collapse]

the reconciliation felt natural as well and I truly enjoyed reading about czh coming into his own.

side note: after jx's brother died long ago, jx adopted his nephew (jx's brother's son), so czh suddenly becomes a stepmom as well when he marries in. Their interactions are pretty hilarious as czh is only a few years older than jy (jx's adopted son).

overall 10/10 recommend for everyone who loves obsessive gongs to give it a try. A thought provoking and intriguing story with well-rounded characters. <<less
