In the seventh year of my marriage to the affectionate second male lead, the female lead returned.

She had quarreled with the male lead and stood in the rain in front of my house:

“Brother Meng, I have nowhere else to go.”

My usually calm and composed husband, Meng He Shu, lost his temper:

“I’m going to find him and settle this!”

Even my seven-year-old son, Meng Bai, waved his little fist:

“Fairy Sister, don’t cry, I’ll marry you when I grow up.”

While they all scrambled to cheer her up, I was trapped on a fishing boat by the sudden downpour, having gone out to buy fresh river fish.

The boatman was shouting at the shore, trying to attract more passengers:

“Anyone else going to Qingzhou?”

I looked down at the basket, where I had just bought three hairtail fish, with only one or two taels of silver left.

I handed the boatman a tael of silver and asked:

“How far can I get with one tael of silver?”

This novel offers an honest portrayal of pain, exhaustion, and the courage of a woman choosing herself. It's not an easy story to digest, nor one that can be judged at a glance. It makes the reader question many things—love, responsibility, and the limits of one’s ability to endure.

What lingers the most is how human the characters are. None of them are perfect, and none are entirely free from wounds or mistakes. But that’s where the story’s strength lies. It doesn’t force us to like the characters—it invites us to... more>> understand them. That sometimes, someone doesn’t leave because they don’t care, but because they’re too broken to stay.

Reading this novel feels like peeling back layers of hidden wounds—wounds carried by many women. It’s not just about sacrifice, but about losing direction, about trying to remain whole while being expected to always be strong. <<less

Very cute story in the end. I liked how the MC didn't just roll over for her husband and found a life just for her in the end.

Spoiler

MC does not forgive her husband and leaves him. I was so relieved. Her child is a brat and it was honestly a relief to see that she doesn't forgive him either. She ends up adopting another kid who actually appreciates her as a mother and tries his absolute best for her.

See how she leaves when she is taken for granted, very demure, very mindful!

Now let’s get down to business. One sentence came into my mind when I read this story : “When a woman decided to leave, you know it’s over because, before leaving you physically, she first leaves you emotionally “

A reason why I thing women stay, even if they aren’t emotionally there, is because of their children but in this situation, and I will not apologize, the boy deserves it !

He may be a “naive” child who act... more>> in a “careless” way but even toddlers are unconditionally on their mother’s side over STRANGERS and let me add FAIR stranger.

I think some people are born evil and depending of their environment when they grow they can eventually become great adult or crappy one. This boy belongs to the latter. <<less

This whole thing wouldve been fine if she didnt have a child with the husband, because just abandoning her child for being rude makes her the as*hole hard

Honestly think the other reviews are INSANE, calling the child a brat and saying its good she abandoned him, like she isnt the one who raised him to become a brat

And she never forgives him either

Imagine if your parents decided to freaking abandon you because you threw a tantrum once

Wonderful story.

Just because you are a mother and a woman, are you supposed to have a larger capacity of tolerance towards disloyalty and disrespect? Just because someone is your son, who you carried 9 months inside you and birthed into this world, you are supposed to be patient and endure for the rest of your life? No. You should honour what honours you and love what loves you. A woman who arrived one day ago overtook your child’s love for you, a mother who has nurtured him for years? I’d... more>> pass too.

5/5

As much as this story tells about found family and how you shouldn't look back from the things that hurt you, the fact that MC left her child over this whole thing is crazy.

It would've been fine if it's just the husband because he clearly deserves it, but the child being abandoned because of a few week's tantrum, then ignored later was preposterous. There weren't even second thoughts about him when leaving nor concern when she's outside the whole time! Just some tiny facts for comparison purposes! It would've been... more>> a little ok if he was treated the same after with the new child but he wasn't. They (her and the biological child) didn't even have a proper conversation!

Basically tarted reading with little hope despite the description but was still disappointed in the end. No proper character depth at all, just plot devices to push the scenes forward. I just finished reading it for the sake of finishing it. <<less

It's a good story and a solid plot for its length. It does lack some depth.
Spoiler

Would a divorce really be so easy or legally recognized? The separation of husband and wife for both situations outlined in the story only hold up so long as the husband does not force the runaway wife back home. A second romance for either the protagonist or the villainess would not be simple. The villainess is problematic in going to a married man, but she is not likely to be able to succeed in leaving her husband with her child without the support of a man. It's contemptible behavior that I can't pity at all, but the underlying desperation of her situation is completely brushed over.

[collapse]

The husband is not a terrible villain, but the neglect he subjected his wife to is a terrible nightmare for anyone experiencing that kind of indifferent treatment. He himself suffered something similar from his white moonlight who never "saw" him. It's unbelievable how he never considered she would suffer more from experiencing watching her husband pine after another woman compared to when he watched his crush pine after another man. It is pretty simple. He never thought she would be able to leave him, so he acted without caring for her feelings. He may have loved his wife more than even he realized, but he did not show any of this love for his wife and took her for granted.
Spoiler

She already forgave him once for his emotional betrayal of their relationship before the story begins. He was well aware she knew of his past feelings for this woman. His intentions to his white moonlight may have been innocent, but his actions revealed his disdain for his marriage. I do like that he ultimately respects her decision to separate in the sense that he does not cross any lines without permission once he finds her.

The son, like the father, did not think too much about showing preference for a woman with bad intentions. Children are easy to be deceived by sweet talkers when compared to their strict parents. However, he was the first to realize his mother was gone for too long and the first to miss her. She probably should not have revenged the wrongs of a child so clearly and completely. He harmed her, but the harm of her abandonment in turn could not have been light. She also directly contributed to a strong competitive relationship between the two children due to her bias. Why do the brothers have to live as enemies due to the cold relationship of their parents?

[collapse]

My favorite character is the boatman. It really feels like he has a story. I am both glad and disappointed that he never became a romantic interest. I probably would not like his character as much if they had any ambiguity. His charm is the way he extends aid without expecting a return. He is a good person doing good deeds. What could be more heartwarming?

Passable story. FL's character setting doesn't align so I couldn't get into it.

Spoiler

As the intro states, FL leaves her hubby after he lets his white moonlight (WM) stay for two weeks. The WM is pregnant and left her hubby after a tiff.

FL is neglected by her hubby and 7 year old son. She leaves and ends up working at an academy as a cook/housekeeper. She ends up meeting an abandoned boy and takes care of him. Her hubby and son end up finding her but she refuses to go back.

She ends up raising the abandoned boy as her son... never going back to her hubby and son.

So, as I said before that her character doesn't align correctly. She was able to abandon a son that she raised and loved for seven years due to two weeks of his spoiled behavior. How can a woman with a strong maternal instinct (evidenced through her care for a bad kid that's not even blood related or nice at first) give up on her own child that easily?

It’s ok, and I can see why a lot of people find it satisfying that she leaves behind the husband and kid so resolutely, but I personally don’t find it all that believable.

Spoiler

Her kid being so ridiculously attached to the other woman makes zero sense. I don’t know of any kid that sees a pretty lady and starts comparing his own mom unfavorably to her - especially not within such a short time. I can see if he knew her as a kid and she always spoiled him vs having a strict mom, but that’s not the case here.

I also find it strange to so easily leave behind her son - no matter that another reviewer claims that leaving the husband by necessity means leaving the son, it’s actually not that straightforward. Sometimes mothers did take the children, particularly in this case where it doesn’t seem like there are in-laws or a strong family to prevent it. Also, her leaving was spontaneously decided - nothing so clear as her coming to a conscious decision to leave her kid actually happened. I would also say that it’s true the mom likely had more influence in raising her son than the dad - it’s pretty typical when kids are younger for them to primarily stay with their mom, especially since the dad is working as a doctor. She could clearly raise the semi-feral kid into a responsible adult, and had endless patience and wisdom for him, so yes, it’s odd for her kid to end up so thoughtless (I don’t criticize her character as a bad mom so much as the author for poor writing).

The husband... I know it’s controversial, but personally I would have liked to see her give him a second chance at the end. Yes, she can live well on her own, and I suppose that’s the moral of the story, but honestly, particularly in an era where women had fewer rights, I don’t think it is the practical choice. The husband is unquestionably at fault, but they obviously didn’t communicate well - their marriage sounded very polite. The MC suffers from the problem of silently swallowing her grievances until she’s had enough and leaves, which is also not conducive to a healthy relationship. In the end, their relationship would never be the same - no one can simply forget about that kind of hurt - but it could be good in a different way, and even stronger if handled well. I know it’s unbelievable to many, and I’m not saying that anyone should tolerate infidelity, but the reality is that relationships can survive it. He was able to recognize and admit his mistakes, and resolved to do better, finally waking up from his attachment to his white moonlight, but she wouldn’t give him another chance. Of course she’s not obligated to do so, but IMO they could have had a quite good relationship if she had.

I’m sure many readers will think I’m unreasonable, maybe it’s just at my age I see people and relationships differently. Particularly in historical eras, where they don’t have the same privileges and options that we take for granted in our modern lives.

[collapse]

Anyway, I think it’s a short, decent story, and lots of people will enjoy her moving on. I give it an average rating mostly because I don’t find the kid’s behavior believable. <<less

FL (Ah Qiao) realized that her husband (Meng He Shu) will never love her and will always his last priority than his unrequited love (Yu Zhe). She finally snapped and left. She started her new life away from her "family".

The ending was indeed really complex but I liked it. Regrets were sometimes too late especially after FL exhausted all her emotion.

Spoiler

I liked that she's decisive and created her own family with adopted kid (Ah Hu). She didn't look back despite the husband and son being willing to change.

I just felt complicated on Bai'er (biological kid) bc he's still a young kid and his attitude was just a reflection of seeing father's treatment to mom and Yu Zhe.

I'm sad that he can't be with her mother bc of the situation. Only comfort in their relationship was him and FL still sending letters.

The premise of the story is cool. However, the events are shallow to justify the intensity of the reaction of not wanting to even resolve the problems left behind, when the girl decided to abandon her family. You may even question that it was the family that abandoned her first, but as I said before, it's just a lack of sincere dialogue. The protagonist simply accepted everything in silence, internalizing her complaints and desires, hoping that her husband and son would discover through telepathy or mind reading that they were... more>> wrong. I'm sorry to inform you that life isn't like that, if you want others to know that their actions hurt your feelings you should tell the person. In this way, the family's relationship was conditioned by the protagonist herself to be that way, even when she was sad she was the first to put others before her desires. I also don't find it credible that a mother who loves and cares for her son after 7 years abandons him because of tantrums and doesn't want to see him and even encourages an adopted son that she just met to get into a physical fight with her biological son. The protagonist, as I said, is different from the basic pattern that was painted for her, sweet, happy and grateful for the simple things in life <<less

I loved this one, just wanted a little bit more of it. Especially loved how it shows that people tend to villainize an easy target, as is shown by everyone despising Ah Hu not caring for his circumstance. I see a lot of people are split on the MC being evil or good because of her abandoning her child, and judging the book based on that decision, which is sorta funny to see. I don't really understand that way of reading, in which you decide how good a story is... more>> based on how good a person you think the MC is.

Spoiler

And the people using the fact that the child is not treating her kindly as a reason to ''absolve'' her of the ''crime''. I think the biggest problem is the fact that when reading you don't really accept the actual environment the MC is in, and just imagine her as being in a modern world, or just taking it as her being he only actual person and the rest as just enemies or allies to her, and judging them based on that. In fact, her leaving her husband, that in itself is an act of abandoning the child, as in those times, so long as a woman is divorced, the child is always considered as a person of the husband's family, unless the woman had a strong enough family to back her when taking the children, so her leaving that family is cutting all ties to the child, especially so if it's an only son. Being a mother is not so important as to completely overturn being a person, and as soon as she decided to be a person and not a little lamp to her husband's devotion to another woman, she gave up on being a mother. It's true that she was disappointed in her son's behavior, but mostly it was her being completely exhausted by her marriage, and knowing that giving in to the son would just lead her back into that relationship. And so, the child was left behind, or rather, the child was left with his father, who was by no means a bad father, just a terrible husband. I saw someone say that she raised the child into acting as he did, and she was not his only parent, he had a father who always acted a certain way towards his mother so blaming the behavior only on her is laughable. It's true that overall, MC mostly considered the s*um husband when making the decision to divorce, and the child was only a small grain of sand in that decision, but once the decision was made, the child could only stay with the father, and she would never give him false hope, that boy himself knew that going with the mother is not really an option, because he only ever thought and said that she should come back to their house, never asked her to take him with her. She was a good mother to Ah Hu, but to the boy she gave birth to, it's true that she wasn't a great mother to him, but it's not really a one dimensional thing, to call her a bad person because of it, in her circumstance, there was only the option of being the fool or leaving the child with a man who is a good father. By the end, you realize she did not even cut ties entirely, as she is still in contact with the 2, and the grown up son visits.

It was quick read and I enjoyed it. Was not entirely happy about the ending and it was so so.

Spoiler

I can't believe she really abandoned and rejected her son. She was described as a woman who helps everyone without hesitation. A very magnanimous woman. Wouldn't it be right for her to forgive the child she almost died for and cared for 7 years. When I was 7 years old I'd rather have junk foods as a meal, how could she expect her son to have a better judgment?

I’m getting the ick with the FL here. The husband did deserve it, but what about her biological child? For someone who’s known to be kind, she sure knows how to abandon her own child so easily. Mind you, he was just a child, and although spoiled, does he deserve to be abandoned like that? If she didn’t want to go back, she didn’t have to ignore her biological like that though? Isn’t she also responsible for her child becoming a brat? If she was truly kind, she could’ve made... more>> it so that her biological child and the one she adopted would get along somehow. I found this story realistic. It shows how a person can feel hurt not just from the father but also from the child. The emotions are understandable and I completely side with the mother on this one. I don't blame her and although I was also hurt by what the child did, he was not completely at fault. The fault heavily relies on YZ and the husband themselves. One manipulated the child to like her more than the mom, and the other completely taking his wife for granted, not modeling... more>> for his child enough to care more for the mother. A 7 year old child can only do so much empathy, and with his father as his model, he managed to hurt his mom unintentionally. The ending was satisfiying as it was bittersweet. It's worth to read, I highly recomment this one. <<less

I also love that instead to use some cliche plot such as new romance entering FL life, the author just resolved it around FL and ML.

And it's so funny how Ah Hu describe them as ungrateful man and ungrateful little child. <<less

It’s a short story and it doesn’t dwell much on the context before it started. The extra gives a bit more.

The FL was already quite disheartened when she took the decision to leave. She could have voiced her hurt, but she felt it was pointless. Who forgets the birthday of someone important to you? Especially since the husband had prefaced days before that he had a surprise for her... Both the husband and son by their actions and words shown she wasn’t a priority in their life, that she was... more>> less important than the moonlight/fairy sister. It isn’t a misunderstanding arising from a lack of communication, it’s a clear lack of concern or care. One can speculate that if she never left, they wouldn’t realize what they missed.
