“Don’t worry. Even if you’re close to death, I’ll end you before that happens,” said the ‘assassin’ with a smile.

Ever since I became the ‘villainess princess’ Lucienne in an Otome game at the age of five, I’ve had to endure the violence and hunger imposed by the queens.

One day, I met him – Lefebvre, one of the hidden capture targets in the game. He’d treat my injuries with herbs, help me sleep, and give me water and biscuits when I couldn’t move.

For the first time, I felt warmth, and I made a decision. “If it’s you, big brother, it’s okay even if you kill me.”

This unexpected encounter between two lonely souls, not part of the game’s original plan, would change the game entirely! A story of a pure-hearted princess and a cunning assassin, with a significant age gap and one-sided love.

Didn't know someone was translating this, so I'll write a review. I've been following the WN and later the Light Novel since basically day 1 and I think the West, especially the US, won't like it unlike me. So I'll give my take

This story is about toxic love and how it can reach a healthy and happy ending, while there is the Otome Game plot going on which is more of a subplot compared to the 2 MC.

Lucienne has lost the will to live, and Lafayette instead is a yandere... more>> and a mu*derer, this is clear from the get-go, and why people won't like it? she is a child (doesn't matter the reincarnation and being a mature woman), and he is a crazy adult assassin.

I could write hours on this point but we all know that fiction must follow the rules more than reality, US, Twitter and so on show us this daily. So let's set aside this point and everyone will decide by itself, it's not up to me to tell you what fictional story to read while you are on the toilet

So I'll write the direction the characters will take in their development, and readers will judge. To me this is fiction, even killing is ok as long as the story calls for it, but I get people don't like this trope and want to know if it can be avoided or not

Lefebvre

Spoiler

Lefebvre is a man who grew up in poverty, death, and violence and could only really rely on himself and his strength. But as the story starts and meets Lucienne, he realizes that he could have fun with a strange child who doesn't cry and could even pierce his bigger strength: the ability to not be seen. Adds to this the fact that everything must be under control, what's better than a girl that could even abandon her life for him? But while the story and Lucienne grow, he learns that being possessive is bad, and true love asks for compromise: set her free sometimes, let her make friends, and so on.

Lucienne

Spoiler

She gets back the will to live, to meet people, to make friends, to go to school, to think for herself. Again she is a grown woman, how did she come to be so lifeless? well add to a terrible previous life, a reincarnation where she gets tortured for weeks, it's heartbreaking to see it. But also very good because this is also the backstory of the actual villainess character in the game. The character will do evil, but at the same time, the other "good" main leads are guilty as well because they will create the villainess. This give depth to the otome game subplot and secondary characters despite not being the main story of the novel. And everything will serve to make Lucienne grow knowing the previous timeline

[collapse]

does the author address the fact that Lucienne's body is the one of a child?

Spoiler

Yes, basically from volumes 2 to 4 Lefebvre will never look and Lucienne's body, will never touch her, and will also point a blade at his boss for suggesting that. This is important to understand because the early Lefebvre isn't there for segs or love, is there for the amusement and obsession of total control over a human life, and if he fails in managing it... he will kill Lucienne because she doesn't matter, yet. The whole story answers to that. and being NO depiction of Lucienne's body, No depiction of intimacy, NO depiction of physical love (but the one that steams out from the mentally insane way of thinking they both have), if you focus your reading on that point alone... well, it's worrisome

why 5 stars?

  1. I like when uncommon characters with bad personalities create a good relationship, or a reasonable one while growing and giving meaning to all the changes. There are almost no good Yandere characters, and Lefebvre starts as a possessive kidnapper and becomes a somewhat good husband, It is quite remarkable
  2. Normally Otome Games focus only on the MC, (almost) everyone else it's just a game character (Bakarina for example). Here there is some reflection between the current timeline and the game timeline even for secondary characters and their thinking and inner turmoil are displayed and move the story in different directions
  3. The otome game subplot became central for a volume and a half, and this will set the main antagonist of the story whose sole purpose is to show off how rock hard the love the 2 MCs feel towards themselves. Nothing is added to make the volume count grow, everything is functional to the love story and character growth
in the end how this love is consumed?

Spoiler

Once the school arc is finished, and Lucienne has finished growing, she must leave society or die because she carries the old royal family blood. This is set from volume 1, she will go away from the capital and will live with Lefebvre now finally free from every social obligation and finally free to show off their love (in like 15 years together they kissed a couple of times and nothing more). The story from this point will follow their honeymoon which will take place in volume 5. Well, yeah, it's not a Korean novel, it won't go in THAT direction lol

to close up, why do I love it? Because given the right context even the worst, sick, and craziest love can be wholesome as long as the author is "a good cook". Usually, authors of these novels don't like writing details, don't like to give answers, don't like to give a somewhat realistic development, but only satisfy their fetish. And even if they do, the context of the story is thrown down a ravine and forgotten. Not here, giving me all the closing points to move out from this story with no answers, no perplexity, and no rage over time lost reading it.

far from being perfect, is good enough as a LN <<less

Yeah...... personally this is a bit too icky for me.

It just reads like textbook g*ooming. Sure the MC is reincarnated so she's meant to be older than she lets off, but she said herself that when it comes to emotions the child side of herself takes precedent.

Not to add that the supposed male MC just comes of as a massive creep, with his whole wanting to keep a four year old all to himself.

Will keep reading since there is a plot point I want to see resolved, but I doubt... more>> I'll read much past there. <<less

That was so weird. Why were the MC and ML's ages so? Yes, it would have been a little weird if he is the best in his profession as a younger person, but this is a fantasy with magic. Or they could have aged her up a little. She's 5. She could have easily been 10-12 and still gone through the same trauma believably.

It's so creepy with their ages when the MC thinks, "... more>>
Spoiler

His aim is to keep Lucienne as isolated as possible from the outside world. She should rely on him completely, grow attached to him, and lose interest in the outside world

I did like the rest of the story. The healtfelt-ness and the realism of the trauma. Also, maybe they'll use

more later bc they didn't really use it much yet. Maybe that's why they thought the age gap was okay? <<less
