Slightly Serious Version of the Synopsis:

Lord Yunzhong, Feng Rugu, is a Daoist legend and the savior of the world.

At 14, he had a moment of enlightenment and created the Guixu Sword Technique with forty-nine forms, astonishing the world with his talent.

At 15, he mastered both magic and martial arts, forging the twin treasure swords, earning widespread admiration.

At 18, he fell into the demonic realm, protecting over a hundred disciples for eighty-nine days, shocking the world.

At 28, he retired to Fengling, living in seclusion by the quiet waters, settling into early retirement—only to be cruelly abandoned in an engagement breakup.

Not-So-Serious Version of the Synopsis:

Master Ruyi, a lone blade guarding the Buddha’s path, kills to protect the world.

The Western Buddhas are infinite in number, yet the only true Buddha in Ruyi’s heart is his adoptive father, master, and benefactor—Lord Duanrong, Chang Boning.

However, Chang Boning’s care belongs solely to the junior brother he practically raised, Feng Rugu.

…It’s infuriating.

Tasked by Chang Boning to take care of his lazy junior disciple, who hasn’t left the mountain for ten years, the naturally aloof Master Ruyi hides his resentment well. Until one day, he discovers that Feng Rugu, just like his adoptive father, plays the konghou beautifully.

Ruyi, arms crossed: …Lord Yunzhong, it seems Lord Duanrong has taught you well.

Feng Rugu: Heh. When you were young, you called me ‘adoptive father’. Now that you’ve grown, you call me Lord Yunzhong.

Gong: Master Ruyi (You Hongchen) × Shou: Feng Rugu

A righteous yet wicked, beautiful Buddhist master (gong) × A carefree yet righteous Daoist wanderer (shou)

One-line summary:

“The world kissed me with pain, so I return it with pain.”

1. Don’t ask if the gong is truly bald. If you ask, he is.

2. Main shou, younger top, 1V1, full of dramatic dogblood twists, with a charming gong and an irresistible shou. Five-year age gap.

3. The gong genuinely dislikes the shou at first for various reasons but will eventually have a change of heart—consider this your warning.

4. Multiple character pairings warning.

At first sight, those familiar with Mo Dao Zu Shi will find many character moments surprisingly familiar

Spoiler

The protagonist:

  • loses his peacefully-living family in a bloody massacre at a young age, followed by spiking the mu*derers' wine and a full-scale revenge
  • gets taken in by a sect-leader and his strict "wife", gaining a sect brother and sister
  • is called arrogant because of his talent
  • after the heirs of all righteous cultivation sects are kidnapped and cut off from the world, protects and saves lives, but nobody is actually grateful to him
  • the sects are afraid of him and his strength, unaware that...
  • after great suffering he cannot cultivate "normally" anymore, demonic cultivation is his only chance

The ML:

  • cold-faced but beautiful gong who values words like gold,
  • calls the protagonist "boring" and "shameless" when teased
  • administers self-punishment after breaking the rules at the start of the story but later grows less restrained
  • his biggest pain is losing the protagonist 10 years ago

The side-characters:

  • A beautiful older brother who had to take on sect-leadership responsibilities too soon, but his greatest wish is his younger brother's happiness

and the antagonist is in love with him

    [collapse]
  • A righteous guy who sincererely admires the MC gets disappointed again and again (because MC cannot use spiritual energy anymore) and attacks back with poisonous words
  • A quiet, smiling, green-tea illegitimate son taken in by his father after his mother's death - pretends to be harmless while turning his father's sect upside down
  • A pure-hearted guy descends his mountain, saves a young demonic cultivator, and almost forms a happy family with him
  • A gentle absent-minded person becomes a sentient fierce corpse
  • A childhood friend who used to only enjoy gardening and raising birds becomes a schemer in the shadows

Also:

  • travelling the world, investigating crime with a few juniors
  • the "evil sect" lost power and became hunted, was granted a sanctuary on a mountain as long as they never kill anyone (except self-defense)
  • in their first spicy scene, the ML is under influence and the MC has his hands bound by a symbol of restraint (Buddhist beads)
  • the author herself recommends listening to Wu Ji (Untamed OST) in a note under a chapter, so...

and there is a tiny little Sha Po Lang resemblance too

  • A beautiful young foster father with a mole and a monocle, first pretends to be useless while he is an indomitable hero, then pretends to be strong when in chronic pain and losing strength and sight...

BUT all of these similarities come up in different context and develop quite unexpectedly.

The worldbuilding is extensive and vivid, the characters are well-rounded and complex and there is lots of character growth, which I appreciate.

What I personally struggled with are the endless misunderstandings - the ML hurts the MC repeatedly, but the misunderstandings are deliberately caused by MC, and it is explained later how he is in fact less hurt by this than it looks.

And then there's the sea of pain - most of the time, almost nobody is having a good time (especially the chapters explaining in detail what happened in the Lost World were really hard to get through), and things do get progressively much much worse before becoming better.

The author loves exploring how trauma changes people - who cuts off their emotions, who becomes all twisted, who grows a spine of steel and who becomes human tr*sh - and how these people live with themselves later on.

But at long last, things do become better, everything will be explained, all threads are connected and there will be a happy ending for everyone (except for the corrupt righteous cultivators who get what they had coming and
