Handwritten synopsis of this novel: They do not know their past glory. They do not know their past power. They’ve been destroyed time and time again. They have no free will. They think themselves powerful while fighting for their own interests. Those higher beings make sure of it. They are born with contracts yet they don’t know the meaning behind them. They’ve long forgotten what it means to be “Human”. Our protagonist a young man named Zhanyue just wanted to finish his PhD and live a leisurely life. Unfortunately, he found himself transported to a turbulent world where everyone had already been cultivating since they were young while those Evil beings had already been living for hundreds of years. Cases of old Monsters who wouldn’t die possessing weaklings souls were all too common. And to make matters worse the humans in this world were heading towards a world ending war with something called the “Nightmare” Race. Wait that’s not the worst of it!?

Original Synopsis: In this world, humans and contracted objects coexist. Swords, spears, sabers, and halberds; firewood, rice, oil, and salt; water, fire, wind; pigs, dogs, oxen, and even sheep can all become contracted objects.

I'm the translator for this book so I'm biased. On the same token, I've read hundreds if not thousands of Chinese novels already and I definitely can tell which are the cream of the "crop" in my opinion. The fact that this novel hadn't been translated yet also was pretty silly, but I guess the focus isn’t really on translating good Chinese novels these days just random system ones sadly. The characters, the story, the deep hidden meanings behind everything. The over-arching plot. The crazy plot twists. The way you... more>> can feel the whole novel is actually planned out in advance. Old experienced badass characters who are ACTUALLY WISE and help broaden the main characters outlooks on life (and ones who you want to just die). A main character that you can FEEL and SEE begins less than everyone else who works hard while also being talented. Who gets stronger at a great pace but not an unbelievable pace. Geniuses that all contribute to the story and don’t just get left in the main characters dust who are the protagonists of their own piece with their own unique powers and problems and don’t exist just to have their faces slapped. The combination of so many ACTUALLY DIFFERENT fleshed out fighting styles is also very satisfying. Different clashing cultivation concepts. A novel that has stakes towards the whole universe but doesn’t overwhelm you. That gradually guides you through a rich story. For those who of you who are interested in weak to strong main characters this is for you. For those of you who like slow burn growth but don't wanna get slow burned to death this is also for you. You can feel the weight of power in this world. The weight of knowledge and wisdom. You can feel how high the main character has to climb. Yet, for those of you who can't take a main character staying weak forever trust me this is not that novel. The way I went into this novel thinking I knew what it was gonna be about with my preconceived notions towards Chinese novels and what I think now is crazy. I highly recommend this novel for those who liked books such as Coiling dragon, perfect world, ISSTH, Renegade Immortal, against the gods, desolate era, and swallowed star, NSHBA. I truthfully feel like it’s better than all of them (personal opinion). <<less

I'm catching up with raws, the main criticism I have for this novel is the MC and how he's used.

My main reading hook for a lot CN novels is that they tend to focus on MC or MC abilities and how they impact the story world

This novel lacks this completely, the MC doesn't cause any impact to move the story

1. MC has a OP ability to reverse stage of a object but it's rarely used as plot device

2. MC contracts with a OP character at the start but she rarely shows up, because she's OP the author keeps coming up with random plot elements to make her not be with MC. It would have been better if she got a power cap due to MC being weak and both of them working together to solve problems

3. MC also doesn't pursue anything, even harem novels have a goal of making heroines fall in love with the main character but this novel harem doesn't fully commit to that either

the author keeps adding more background elements to the world, I'll wait and see how it evolves <<less

The story is good.

The main character's personality isn't anything special. He's just a normal good MC. Most of the other characters feel believable. While it does happen some, the characters mostly aren't built around tropes.

The strength of the novel is in the setting. The power system is very interesting with it's contract system. But the world itself has many different elements, we see things from other power systems show up. And the world has gone through many different eras, we aren't just going through the plot of the story but... more>> we're also unraveling a mystery of how the world became like this. The only complaint is that having so many different systems / elements means they aren't as strong as standalone pieces as they could be.

The plot is fairly straightforward. A world being invaded by outside creatures that follow certain rules, sort of like a "hero saves the world from demons" story. A lot of focus is put on the human side of internal conflicts and secret scheming which is interesting to read.

The biggest weakness of the novel is how the MC goes through the plot. He's a genius in everything who is supremely lucky, so a lot of arcs are him walking around through various inheritances or secret realms to gain / master techniques and abilities. Which isn't too bad. But it's also combined with the shallow harem type plot. Each arc follows the same format: he encounters a girl who is one of the most beautiful girls in the region who is incredibly talented but is currently in a bad position away from her protectors. Then he saves them, they fall in love with him, and then something comes up which forces them to go away so that he can do it again with another girl. The instant he leaves one girl who loves him, he'll meet a beauty who interacts with him within a few chapters so it can repeat.

The story has an incredibly interesting setting with decent characters and an acceptable overall plot, but shows that through a formulaic harem Protagonist story. <<less

Peak 4 star GARBAGE, one of the worse ones I've read in a while. It was (barely) passable until the book world arc around ch 180? After that it's been straight up garbage. Before that I was already annoyed with certain things; mainly the MC just gets too much without doing anything.

MC has the personality of a wet sock, gets pulled along passively in the story and the author is a creepy bastard. The way that the plot developments are written feel extremely forced; it's not the MC moving the... more>> plot, it's not the other characters nor the setting. It feels like it's the author literally forcing things according to his wishes and it's so cringe for lack of a better word.

There are a lot of flowery descriptions for the female characters which is standard, but the MC is written to constantly have lowkey pe*verted intentions and when the plot involves a girl being in a passive position there are paragraphs detailing how the MC could r*pe and assault her, but he's such a gentleman that he doesn't. Yuck. <<less

Heavy plot armor. Forced plot situation. Very predictable. Cliche harem plotlines. Basically it's just another story written with just the most basic creativity and style. Nothing special to note.

well... it's a good translation and everything...

MC plot armor is too ridiculous, with his contract objects being legendary items with crazy abilities 3 out of 3 so far, and the way he gets into trouble and how it's resolved...

The time reversal he got for the first item is not used very well

Perhaps author didn't properly explain how the ability was supposed to function as it costs lifespan to activate, but it was explained as costing based on how far back MC reverts an object in time, yet when healing some... more>> guy on the verge of death who had been wounded just a few minutes ago?

It should cost a few minutes of lifespan right?... yet "This time it consumed quite a bit of his lifespan" to show how heroic and awesome the MC is in repaying debts etc. making a big sacrifice of a few minutes

The second item is the corpse of what is basically a goddess at full power who is doing who knows what somewhere else, even though she'll die (again) the moment he does... She doesn't seem to really care much about his safety

The third item he just got at C34 where I'm stopping is some great ancient cauldron for refining pills/boosting cultivation even by randomly cooking food in it

With a convenient cultivation technique engraved on it because MC needs one of those

Foreshadowing for a total of 9 contract objects when people can only have 1 contract item normally... already quite a few harem cliches, and a ridiculous assassination plot because he spent a day with a "saintess" during a literal random disaster that couldn't be controlled... <<less
