Yay, first person to write a review for this! This is a really underrated BL novel, but I hope you guys will give it a try!

I really enjoy this novel as it takes on a more realistic side and the characters & plot aren't that bad. The novel brings in a lot of information from the Ming Dynasty which I found rather interesting since not a lot of historical novels involving romance actually take on this kind of setting/plot (at least I can't seem to find a lot of them).

Mc:

The... more>> MC transmigrated from the modern day to the ancient day as a "concubine" born son.
Spoiler

I put it as "concubine" because MC's mother (when he transmigrated) was actually a lowly maid who accidentally got pregnant because the person she works for husband ended up doing it with her when he was drunk.

[collapse]
MC is not op, he's more on the hard working side. He started off trying to use what he learned in his modern classes since he can not understanding anything the people are talking about since he came from the modern times, but he spends his time listening to others taking classes outside, studying and practicing what he learned from the teacher of those students and traditional writing. Basically the MC is a likeable character, he doesn't have a bad personality, hard working, has common sense/IQ & EQ, and knows what to say and what not to say at the right time.

Side characters

The side characters are also not bad. First off, the characters act pretty realistic. Let's take MC's family for example,
Spoiler

MC's family (besides his mom) kicks him and his mom out the house and sending them little to no amount of food each month just because his mother has a really low status. The elders at his family try to let him remember that he is still a member of their family so that he has to help them in the future after he got 1st place during the exam competition. Basically just an example of when you are useful, people will play along or let you remember who you are/were, but once they are done using you, they will throw you away.

[collapse]
Second, the side characters also don't lack much in common sense.

Plot

As said before, this is a realistic novel revolving around the Ming Dynasty. It includes real events and characters from the Ming Dynasty.

This started off introducing MC and some supporting characters that will appear quite often later on.
Spoiler

MC's friends and the emperor. ML doesn't appear until chapter 15.

[collapse]

Yes, this is a slow romance as said so in the tags.

Not gonna talk about more since it will be a big big spoiler for you guys.

Anyways, I would definitely recommend this novel to you guys if you are planning to read something that involves real events from a certain era/time, politics, characters including the side characters having common sense.

Also, to the person that is translating this novel, you are doing an awesome job with the translations, keep it up! <<less

4 stars!

Rated more for MC's journey and the intriguing politics. I will want to re-read this when the translation is fully out (because ya I couldn't grasp the full depth of the plot in chinese and all the names). This is also a very well-done realistic plot for that era in historical China. And the supporting cast (I would say from real history and made up) were not flat. MC spends a considerable amount of time with them and builds real connections.

The minus 1 star is because I didn't feel... more>> much about the romance. Firstly, major spoiler but this is a major make or break for some people, I believe. I wasn't that happy about it but I understand that it's very realistic:
Spoiler

Both MC and ML do get married to women (so basically other people) and have children of their own. It's realistic for the era for men to get married (pressure from family played a big role in this story for MC, I feel) but also realistic because ML needs an heir. Fret not, they don't have a lot of children. But sometimes in this kind of plot, it makes me almost sad for the women in the plot. But alas, such was the era. Also a bit annoying but the marriage thing esp for MC spanned a long while. So the fact that his marriage to someone else keeps coming up in the story kind of spoiled it a little for me.

[collapse]

Next, this is very much an MC-centric story so while ML is head over heels for him, looking from MC's side I felt that
Spoiler

he had more familial love for ML than romantic love. I hope it's because I didn't read well so I will definitely check back again with the translation. There's a "love rival", this guy who saved MC and MC kind of saved him (?) who becomes like his bodyguard. I just feel that if that rival had initiated intimacy (that MC might not even reject, he did joke about marrying him had he been a girl, if I recall, he says that to another friend of his who may or may not have a crush on him too) with MC before ML did, HE would have been the ML. Like MC loves ML for sure but it almost feels like he's going on ML's whim because of the deep familial love. Also, this book is so slow burn, by chapter 50 I think ML is still like 8 or 10?

[collapse]
So to me, this is more of MC's journey, romance is not the priority.

It's a HE though, so points for that. Overall, worth the read for the politics and how author ties it in with real history. Also for MC's growth through life. <<less

As I am currently writing this review, the novel isn't even half translated yet, and I cannot for sure say anything about the ending, but as of now, the novel is actually great. I love the characters and how they also grow together with the MC and not just there to serve as his background, even the cannon fodders are memorable to some extent. Beware that this is slow burn though, and that there ... more>>

is an age gap between the MC and the ML as the MC was already on his way to take the imperial exam when he met the ML who is still a child.

[collapse]

The MC is also not omnipotent, he does know the details from history but then again, reading it from books is different from living it in real life. Additionally, the MC also caused some changes which directly or indirectly change some events that he know will happen in the future. The actions and reaction from the people around him is also realistic and revolves on what their motives are from that certain time frame.

The translation is top-notch and I couldn't ask for more. There are some notes that explains certain words or ranks in case you are not familiar with Chinese terms in history.

As for the author's notes, I always love reading the tidbits of history included at the end of the chapters explaining what she/he change and what the original events are as this book follows the timeline of the real Ming Dynasty. <<less

Top rated translations, (thank you to the translator for spending time and money on this, im really enjoying it)

the story itself is super engaging to me, the fleshing out of the characters like the emperor and the antagonists make it feel so much more real. I especially love the MC and ML interaction

im also learning a lot about chinese history, I super love the author’s mini history lessons (thanks for translating those, theyre really interesting and educational)

Currently on Chapter 56 and immensly enjoying this novel.

The main character is intelligent and likeable. I find it refreshing to read a story where the protagonist comes from a very humble beginning and slowly advances in the political path. The family drama, the court politics are balanced well, making this story very interesting and relastic. I don't mind the lack of romance so far because the story is interesting enough.

It is not about love, disappointment.

Spoiler

Love appears only in the last chapters when the main characters are already married and have children. Also, it is not passionate and nor too well-written. Just one side of an official's life.

[collapse]

I think those who are interested in alternative history may like the story because there's an attempt to change the ancient environment with some liberal reforms. However, the story as I see it is plain boring. The reforms are too naive and there's no real adventure. Just a person working hard and achieving positions. In too many chapters not to bore a reader like me to death.

As for historical and political side, it's a rather primitive view that a knowledgeable person can change historical surroundings. History is controlled by economical and industrial possibilities, there's no trace of it in the novel. Everything is determined by the main character instead of new institutions, controlling organizations etc. And the emperor is basically a puppet supporting all decisions. Looks very childish to me.

What I don't like about this novel is some romantic hints for personal relationships appearing from time to time which always turn out to be nihil. <<less

I didn't realise since the english title was unfamiliar, but I've already finished the raws a few years ago. I ended up rereading the entire thing anyway.

Meng Xi Shi's main characters are always to my taste and this is no different. They are gentle and sometimes have a cunning side, usually the white moonlights of side characters and first loves of MLs.

About the romantic interests : ... more>>
Spoiler

A few of the people around MC falls in love with him, some are obvious (e.g one of his best friends) while some are hinted (e.g his bodyguard). These love will never fruiten because they are mostly men of political powers and ends up marrying a lady due to social norms.

In this regards, let me just say ladies in the Ming dynasties suffered a lot. Princesses had it worse, but don't expect much female presences in this novel. It is predominated by males due to it's political nature.

ML is historically bis**ual, and MC was as straight as an arrow. MC in his past life had a lot of flings and he don't care much about romance. They also have an age gap so the romance won't come naturally. ML falls in love first but he won't realise his feelings till chapter 70, and they won't get together till even later.

[collapse]

Calling this novel a slow burn wouldn't be accurate since it was never intended to be a romance novel. Tian Xia focuses on politics and dynasty reformation and danmei is just a subplot. Since this is based on real China history, it would've been impossible to follow the chronological timeframe if the romance was a main focus.

Spoiler

There are rated scenes after they get together, but those are mostly standalones and don't affect the plot.

[collapse]

However, one critique from me is that since Meng laoshi was determined to conform to actual history timeline despite wanting MC's actions to impact the dynasty, MC felt like a self-insert character to fufill her fantasies. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, but it made the timeline a little stiff. Although MC has political powers, he didn't take much actions in fear of changing "canon events". As such, MC took on a pretty passive role at the start, mostly retreating and avoiding trouble. It can be said to be a strategic retreat, but it also felt unrealistic because everything fell too nicely into place for a political sequence.

That aside, there aren't any major flaws for me and I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Meng laoshi has a really extensive knowledge of ancient China and although it comes off patriotic at times, it's a novel about dynasty prestiges and I knew what I signed up for when I read it so it didn't put me off. Plus, I appreciate her efforts in following historically accurate information as close as possible so this is really a gem. The ending is very typical of Meng Zi Shi and makes you crave for extras. Although it was more of a historical text than a romance one, I seriously didn't feel bored even though I'm rereading this. Highly reccomended for those who loves reading about history and kingdom reformation plotlines. <<less

Extremely slow-burn. I'm more than two-thirds through the story and the MC is still straight and not even aware of the ML's feelings.

It's a good story to pass the time but there is a lot of Chinese patriotism that is often brought up which can be quite annoying to read.

Overall, it's quite realistic as the MC is not overpowered and climbs up through his own hard work- though he's never been in an especially tricky situation.
