I think when the asteroid piece hit the MC's brain it did cause some damage because for some reason he idolizes the people who have made him poor 5 years after he started working as a hero. They nitpick every fight and deduct all his money. Does the Government not have any subsidies for these things? A pervy Investor for a tv shoot that has malicious intent towards the MC? Let's have the MC condemned for his 'evil' actions and needs "reeducation." All in a days work you know? Defend the world, lose your paycheck to bureaucrats and need to be reeducated for not wanting to be mol*sted.

[collapse]

The world better watch out because I expect the slav...I mean superheroes to revolt against them. Doing all the dirty work and not even getting paid. Oops! Sorry, you broke a lightbulb lets deduct your entire wage haha better luck next time scrub keep defending us from these world-ending demons.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to add this series to my already massive list of series I read, but I am glad I did. So far the story hasn't really gone much further than it's introductory arc, but already it's enjoyable.

The long short of it is that this series is very much comedic in tone at the moment. Like just read first chapter and you should get an idea of the tone of the series. People who like humor in "Witch in a world of urban legends" probably may... more>> also enjoy this as well. MC has similarities to Yibei.

This is not a series meant to be acclaimed by critics. It's meant to be creative, fun, and entertaining.

Setting:

Earth was assaulted by supernatural meteors which mutated humans giving them attributes and on occasion superpowers. It also mutates people and things into monsters, and maybe causes dimensional gates to open (Not sure on last part).

Suffice to say many humans were mutated in various ways, and there are superheroes fighting off enemies.

MC is a dude who gained the ability to turn into a plant based magical girl (complete with different forms based on the day of the week). Main character is still male outside of transformation.

MC has worked as a hero using magical girl form for years, and wants to retire and go to college/school to enjoy the life.

At this moment in the story, he is still in the orientation process of school.

Genderswap elements:

Those wanting the "Until I become Me" or other common genderswap drama, are going to be left wanting. This series is more comedic, and it's an alternate form.

It's very akin to Yibei in "Witch in a world of urban legends" or even loosely like "Knight becomes vampire prjncess".

That said, the alternate form certainly influences MC thoughts in use, to the point a coworker spoke of MC having split personality while teasing MC a bit. And years of living much of his life fighting as a magical girl, has had some influence on MC (like reflexively getting worked up over a roommate fist bumping his chest).

Maybe down the road something might change, but it's impossible to tell.

Humor:

Im not laughing to the point of tears or anything. But this series so far has gotten more than a few smiles, snorts, chuckles, and laughs out of me. Some of the humor is almost slapstick, some of it is almost parody in nature (like the cliche tentacle mutant villain having the alias of "The Spreader"), and some of it can really tickle.

Like take this non spoiling example;

"Bai Zimo felt a wave of nostalgia for his first phone, a Nokia 1100. It was built like a tank, and he had kept it as a backup until a few years ago. Unfortunately, during an Infernal-level disaster, it sacrificed itself to block a demons strongest attack, finally meeting its end."

I've read a number of stories with better humor easily. But this one is pretty good so far also, above average, it's enjoyable.

A spoiler example of the humor, using the explanation/theory why MC got magical girl powers:

Spoiler

Space rock appears to mutate people in some accordance to their circumstances/attributes, not unlike crab man in One Punch Man mutating after eating too much crab. MC was going through a delinquent phase, where he was getting into fights with others, using his trusty steel pipe he carries in his bag. Well someone challenges him to a fight after school. He grabs his bag absentmindedly and goes to face the guy. However, instead of his steel pipe, he pulls out a super girly magical girl staff (and costume?) that turns out to have been from a classmates similar looking bag he grabbed instead. At that point while dying inside, he got hit with a small piece of space rock, and since he had the magical girl stuff he got magical girl powers.

[collapse]

Even if you don't find things as funny as me, you probably will at least be amused.

Plot:

So far it's more of a undercurrent. MC basically arrived at college meanwhile bad guys do bad things.

The series starts on his last day on patrol as a hero before he retires to go to college.

I expect we will get some serious drama down the road, but right now it is fairly lighthearted.

Characters:

Main character is pretty entertaining so far. Definitely similar to someone like Yibei in "Witch in a world full of urban legends". He's fairly dynamic in speech and action, and is a decent likable protagonist without obvious issues so far.

Side characters haven't been really developed greatly yet. But they seem good/promising for the kind of story this is. Worldbuilding/writing:

I won't say everything is super well thought out in principle. This is not a series where it tries to explain or justify all of its settings rationally, you just accept this world as it is.

But the author does a good job developing the world and drawing the reader in through exposition and experiences the MC has. While also being fairly creative in development and use of the setting/characters.

This series is one that feels more distinct, and not another lazy derivative product.

There also are things that may be setup for the future, but it is unclear at this moment.

Final Note:

It's early in the series. Lots of things can change for better or worse. I look forward to seeing if this can continue its momentum. <<less

From the same author "Witch in a world of urban legends" you can expect similar writing in the story.

The story is well dished out following the Protagonist wanting to retire from hero works but being probably the strongest hero existence he can't just randomly quit and he was also broke as hell.

It is a slow burn but effectively allow reader to follow the world, main characters and the side characters.

I do say giving it a try if like superhero setting and comedy.
