After traversing to the end of the Yuan dynasty but just before the start of the Ming dynasty, Lin Yuan originally prepared to follow in the footsteps of his time travelling seniors. Invent tanks, cannons, and steam engines while gaining underlings and dominating the world.

However, before he realized it, Lin Yuan’s followed by a crowd of impoverished and destitute people——

“Follow after Boss! There will be food to eat!”

“Follow after Boss! No more starvation!”

The goal is to dominate the world, the tragic reality however is more about building and farming.

This is a story about a straight(?) Gary Stue protagonist ‘forced’ into becoming a male living Buddha.

I actually have a half-hate and half-love attitude when it comes to novels that are similar to the written history. But I love this oneeeeee..

5/5 Plot ... more>>
Spoiler

it's amazing. It discussed why old customs must be changed and showed a characteristic of an emperor for LY.

5/5 Love line
Spoiler

personal reason. For me, if you are the emperor, all is yours, all the power, the glory, the money and beautiful women /men are yours, then what is it that you really have? I dunno if it's a common perception but for me, things that can be easily achieved and taken are not precious. I'd hate myself if I ever look at someone like that. That's why I'm living like a fake-ascetic monk 🤣 I'm just happy that LY found comfort and companionship with CB. Special mention to Hala Zhang and the the most beautiful little official ChuLin. I just hoped I could have seen them married.. 🫣

The author seems like they want to describe MC as a realistic MC. But the problem is he is so much fake by the author writing. As a modern civilian transmigrated to the ancient approaching war, he is flexible and adapted so much so that he can kill and slip the neck of a bandit within a year or so. Like WTF. You don't need a high IQ or brain to think about that. The MC is more like a sinister, that he can be cruel and decisive when need... more>> like in his previous life time he can send secret information to rival company in place of his senior and framed him. Of course that senior more likely bullied him as a newcomer. But come on, I never ever dare to think about that as a normal person like revealing secret information to rival company. One of the best historical Yaoi novels I've read!

I am done with those bl novels where if you just change the 'he' of the doormat prontagonist with 'she', it turns into another average dogblooded romance bg novel.

Here, finally, we see a seme who had his own dominance over the gong. And it did not even imbalance the power dynamics between them in this context.

Many reviewers were kinda disappointed with the amount of romance in this novel. I do get where they're coming from as there is barely any fluff compared... more>> to other bls. At the same time, I think it is just the right amount considering the background of the MC and the ML.

Our MC, Lin Yuan, transmigrates into the warring years of the actual Yuan dynasty in Chinese history. He doesn't have any type of golden fingers except the knowledge and upbringing he retained from modern times. He is even a pure humanitarian student, so forget about inventing stuff on his own. He just wanted to carve out a small unknown place in the countryside so that he and his family will be safe. Well, at first anyway.

The most noticeable and intriguing element in the novel is Lin Yuan's character development over the storyline. Step by step, his ambition grew and he turned into a hegemony ruler. There were times when he doubted himself, but at the end, he got back up on his own and even stronger than before.

There were also many side characters that I loved like Song Shizhao, Zhu Yangzheng (the actual founding emperor of Ming dynasty🤭🤭), Lady An, Hong Xiu, Tian Xiang. There were so many badass female characters I fell in love with especially Hong Xiu. I also thought that there was a potential GL couple in Qiu Niang and Yan Niu. Though couple of BL and GLs were there but that didn't mean BG was non-existent. There was the perfect balance in everything.

We got many daily lives od throwaway characters to show how the actions taken by Lin Yuan affected others negatively or positively. Though, this novel cannot be considered 50-50 black and white, morally grey and it also had plenty of idealistic elements here and there, I still enjoyed the heck out of this novel.

If you want a historical and political novel where the MC steps into the path to the imperial throne then this is for you. It is NOT brain-dead, there is reason behind each and every action of Lin Yuan. This is one of those novels where I would give it more than 5 ⭐ only if I could!

"The motive and the era was different, therefore you could not use the same ethics and values to treat the same issue." (I don't know why authors forget to teach this essential lesson to their transmigrating protagonists😩😩😩) <<less

For me this novel is a FAIL. It started good and I rarely saw a Kingdom building BL story, I was intrigued because I kinda liked the genre itself and I've read it in many books already mostly lead by male or female. In male kingdom building you can really see the intricacies and strategic ways a man with a power/talent to lead a kingdom can do and how they will use there modern knowledge to their advantage to create an ideal kingdom. Female counterparts on the other hand were... more>> mostly focus on improving daily lives in a micro way which was entertaining on its own. This book has the problem of an incompetent MC. I don't mind an MC that was unknowledgeable and not OP but if you are going to create a Kingdom Building book amidst the many existing and excellent MCs of kingdom building books then you're failing to compete the market.

This book is unrealistic. The MC does not encompass the true qualities of a leader that the book tried to tell the readers. I've studied Organizational/Industrial Psychology before and reading this was just a big ick for me with the MC trying to repeat that he was good as a leader in the modern world. That's not how it works. It can't even be seen from when he was in the ancient times, the author just deem that the people wont rebel against the MC.

MC also was terribly lacking on knowledge about how people works during trying times. He has no livelihood skills sadly and any advantage of a modern knowledge was conveniently lacking from him just because he was a humanities graduate. I mean there are people like him but he was the worse person you can use as a protagonist in a Kingdom building book. I feel like the author was lazy to even search how to invent such simple things, even creating oil from beans was not explained well and gloss over. Like with the chicken laying eggs, like it's common sense to those in the countryside who deals with livestock that hens don't lay eggs everyday unless they were given feeds that are rich in calcium and protein. Even that will take every other day and this were modern healthy chicken that are well fed. Compare to chicken from trying times who only eats weeds and beancurd, who are also not raised for poultry? The pig raising also, like it's common sense that you don't raise your pigs for more than a year because the meat of that will be stringy and it only took 3 months for a pig to be fully mature and be ready for slaughter.

I'm in the field of psychology but I knew a lot of livelihood and technical skills as well as household skills. Even farming and livestock was terribly not researched by the author, just write what he expect and not based on actual facts.

The only thing this book offers was the Kingdom Building part as the romance was just in the end, the author still failed to exceed the existing standard or even reach the standard level. A lot of people like this book maybe because they wanted to reminisce the Yuan and Ming dynasty but I as a non-chinese person could really care less and I don't factor it in my views.

As a KB book with the romance as a subplot in the ending chapters then this book for me is a FAIL. <<less

This has been a long journey. I really recommend this novel to everyone. I can't even describe it. I don't enjoy political fights or long historical describtions. But the MC here is human. It focuses a lot on how he really tries to help people and on the human relationships. The bl is more a side thing. But this is okay. Because I had so many more feelings reading this.

It was a lovely journey. Time flies.

Translation/Writing

I read the translation by TheIronTreeBlooms. The translation is pretty good, there were zero awkwardly translated bits or wrong pronouns. But there are a few typos but it's easy to dismiss. The writing is pretty detailed compared to regular web novels. You can visualise everything, the setting, the mood, the people easily without it being dense.

... more>> Plot

Wow, it went on such an amazing journey. We travel from a farm to the best emperor of ancient China. It was epic and the scale of problem solving went from how to set up a safe place for his family in the country to how to give all the common people in China a better life. We watch Lin Yuan grow so much and all the different decisions he has to make until he becomes such a powerful and rational emperor. So epic haha.

Pacing

The beginning was farming and small scale development but from 1/3rd onwards it gets more military and espionage focused, in between exploring law making, researching, kingdom building and the execution there off. I only liked the military fighting parts the least, so that part was a bit slow for me but I just couldn't help being drawn to the story no matter what was happening.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

The main thing here is kingdom building and man, did it succeed. I've read a few other kingdom building stories, not many, but the breadth and width of the details written is amazing. I actually wish there were more details included even though it is impossible to put in everything. Once the provinces were conquered and then the capital, there were just too many things being introduced and implemented that I wanted to know! The author cherry picked some stuff to explain in detail but ahhh I wanted more! It felt super realistic and the setting is really apparently here. It was such a joy to explore ancient China. The only slight con is that there are lots of mentions of apparently famous people in ancient Chinese history? They are now important side characters in the story but I don't have any familiarity with them at all haha But it's still fine, you can get the gist.

Other than kingdom building, the characters are all super developed and with so much variety that the world feels alive, you can really see what is going on with all these small povs scattered everywhere. I feel in other kingdom building stories, either the kingdom building is the focus and the characters get the short end of the stick or the kingdom building is very light and happens too easily. For this story, both the kingdom building and the characters were fantastic. So the whole story had no major point that was bad.

Characters

We follow all kinds of characters in the story, many of them only appear once to represent part of the population to showcase how people who are not the MC are reacting to the changes the MC made. I normally don't like reading about other povs than the MC but here it happens so smoothly and was so interesting I didn't notice haha.

It was such a journey to watch our MC grow and develop into what he finally became. He's so level-headed, with compassion and yet the ruthlessness to achieve what he wants. His close officials came up with a good sentence, the MC is harsh to his officials but indulgent to the common people. I only wish there were more heartwarming scenes but alas, he's way too busy for that. And also, he's at the top now, so it's hard to have anyone close. For the ML, he really doesn't appear much so I don't have any opinion on him in particular. I do like that the MC has someone to be close to though. T.T Ahhh, the ending was so bittersweet! They were alrd past middle aged and they were alrd lovers for a long time by then, the MC said that he wants them to be in the same coffin after they die. That's the final pov we get from the main couple T.T Wahhh, I wanted an extra of them reincarnating in modern times where the MC doesn't have to work so hard and just focus on living happily with his BF T.T

All the side characters were just great. Mister Song, sniff, that ending for him was so freaking emotional gah. If you minus 30 years of his age, all his scenes with the MC can be considered romantic in a different perspective hahaha He has more screen time than the ML lol I loved the Big Brother, he was almost the only source of lightheartedness in the story. It's a bit sad that the generals all lived at the border for so many years. I wished the MC could have kept more brotherhood with them later on in life without worrying about power.

Overall

This story isn't just a simple one-note web novel but a real book haha There were all kinds of emotions from me reading this. The MC is a pretty rare character, there were no major or s*upid mistakes from him, but you don't feel that he is a Gary Stu. He's not a cold-blooded person to reach the status of Emperor but he doesn't let his compassion hinder him. I admire him very much! I do wish we got to see what happened to all the major side characters at the end though.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was insightful about governance, social issues and conditions, and proposed a lot of interesting things about societal development that I think would be useful for any student of governance. It's an interesting look at historical fiction and the implications of governance re-structuring.

I will definitely recommend this to most people interested in understanding world-building for alt-historical fiction or just people interested in some concept about governance.

It's good for people who wanted to read building a nation or empire novel. This is slow life and relaxing at the same time nerve wrecking to read.

There's almost 0 romance. Actually I didn't thought that the ML will be that person.

The ending and extra is good also. Since MC change the past, the future also change. It really present the butterfly effect.

It's good! I like it.

after mc's dead, there's female majesty!! Yay

This novel is just politic plays, MC's personalties changes and just improve the way of living system.

If you came for comedy after reading disclimer, then you'll get everything but nothing about comedy😂. I fell that trap.

This novel is dead serious and there is almost nothing about MC and ML's romance trip.

But You can't deny this novel is really really fabulous in all ways and tho reading long chapter with historic bg, it won't make you feel bored. <<less

So, this is not your usual danmei. In the sense that if you're looking for romance/sweet stuff? Yeah it's there, just that out of 191 chapters only 7 shows romance between the MC and ML. But there is often sweet scenes in the chapters looking into the lives of random side characters and civilians whose lives have been changed for the better by MC.

To put it another way, this novel uses an outsider perspective on the romance. Every time there's a development between MC and ML or a change in... more>> MC's feelings, you don't get to see it until the ML gets hit with it lol. It will very casually hint that they've already started cohabitation or sleeping together on the regular, almost like the romance is just the background for the main plot, which it is. You do get the MC's personal voice, but most of the time he's thinking about the country and his next action plan. When this novel calls itself "Returning to the Beginning of Ming, it means it, because the MC

is the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (literally changing history what a madlad). He starts off as very human, and then slowly grows colder and colder as he realises the things he has to do and avoid in order to be a good emperor who can stabilise the Ming Dynasty. Plot Quality: 4/5

Entertainment Value: 5/5

A good kingdom building book with little romance. I was gripped by the story all throughout! I especially appreciate how the author periodically has chapters solely focused on different villages and common people—it warmed my heart to see the real positive change Lin Yuan created.

Spoiler

In the beginning of the story, we are firmly planted in Lin Yuan's perspective. However, when he begins his conquest, most chapters barely focus on his emotional state. We get a few paragraphs about how he feels and what he's thinking, but not as much as the beginning and ending chapters. Instead, our attention is drawn to his subordinates and subjects. We only refocus on Lin Yuan's inner life once his reign has stabilized. I actually like this. It feels as if we lose sight of who Lin Yuan really is as he throws himself into building his empire—the same way Lin Yuan felt. I honestly believe this is why his romance with Chen Baisong came so late: he barely even had time to think about himself, let alone his lover. This is why there romance only bore fruit once Lin Yuan already sat firmly on the throne.

I genuinely enjoyed reading the novel. It has a very well-thought-out plot. I love the different POVs and the fact that it played on my emotions.

The MC had an amazing growth throughout the entire novel. We got to see him at his lowest, where he grew and grew into the amazing emperor that he became, and how he thought of the people below him and around him.

Even though it was a Shonen-Ai, I forgot that it was because there wasn't much in the first, I... more>> would say, 130 chapters that could be clearly considered BL. Yes, there were hints here and there, but nothing until about chapter 140 and higher.

Then you see the relationship of the MC and ML start to take develop. It's a steady growing mature relationship were they understand their roles in and outside the bedroom. They loved and respected each other very much.

The passing of one of LY's most trusted advisors and the POVs of the soldiers right before their deaths took me on an emotional, tearful journey. Honestly, I wish they told us who died first or even a hint that they met each other in another life. I'm so emotionally connected to this right now.

I'm sure my memories of this novel will fade with time, but I am grateful I got the chance to read it. Thank you, author, for writing such a remarkable story. I wish LY and CB the best in the next life.☺️ <<less

1. I must say that I love the MC and watching him grow and develop, building his empire and making it flourish, was very interesting and emotional at the end. His care for the common people, his kindness but also his ambition and intellect makes him out to be one of the best MCs I have ever read about.

Spoiler

At the start of the novel he does good things for the people who have been left with nothing. He buys s*aves to give them hope for life. He's trying to be a good person. Despite this his kindness doesn't turn him into a foolish and naive young master. He gives but not for absolitely free. He gives people food and place to stay, he takes care of their basic needs but also has them work for it (he also gives them money for it). He knows that if people start taking his kindess for granted and stop seeing his authority it would be bad. He knows that rules have to be respected. Very early on he's established punishment and rewards system.

[collapse]

2. The plot is about empire building. There are many stories about the people in the country. I liked this a lot. Although there were many names mentioned and I might not remember all of their names some of their story stayed with me till the end. I also had fun searching up the names of the actual historical figures and learning more about the Yuan and Ming dynasties. If you like Chinese history, empire building, ruling, politics then go for it.

Spoiler

Li Yuan did so many things when establishing his empire. And I really loved him for giving women more rights and respect. I literally cried my eyes out when I read the extras. How much I love that the next emperor became Lin De. A female emperor and after her another one. I became so emotional. The author gave me so much. They wrote a story where women in ancient China could have authority and be equally seen for intellect and work. And they didn't even write it like a fiction. Lin Yuan knew that for some reforms would be too early. But he also showed us that there is a way. I also loved how CBS was remembered as LY's lover in the future (showed extra 2)

[collapse]

3. Romance - When I started reading I was prepared for little to no romance because many of the reviews have mentioned it. And yes, there isn't much romance but I think it depends on how much of romance are you used to having in BLs. Since I didn't have much hopes I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there was more of it than I expected. But of course there wasn't much either. It's like you get excited for even a little sign of progress that it makes you feel good. I justhad to be careful not to be greedy. Every moment they had a conversation became something I cherished. I love them both and I think the way ML is, makes him to be best suited for the MC. I genuinely love them as a couple.

Spoiler

The ML only shows up in around chapter 30-40. I was kinda surprised but not disappointed. It made sense for him to show up late. I thought they would get together only in the last chapter (completely misunderstood the translator's note) so I was hella surprised when they started doing it in around 150 chapters. I like how both of them were devoted to each other in their own ways. Even LY as an emperor let himself have something and care about himself by having CBS by his side.

[collapse]

Overall. It was a wonderful read for me, the plot and the little but significant romance in the back was very satisfying. I also like the author a lot. <<less

If you wanna read this for the romance, I suggest that you don't. It purely 98% plot and romance just happened to be. Honestly not my type of novel to read. I was duped into thinking it would he a cutesy transmigration story because of the title. But dang! Such a serious novel about pursuing ambitions. I am around chapter 80, so far so good. It is more "historical" than BL. Few readers are starting to realize it's BL around chapter 80, they thought it's het historical novel. I can see why. It's really informative, i've learned so many things from this novel. I've never fully understood why Yuan dynasty failed, now I see the reason and situation of China at that time. Real historical generals and other figures appear in this novel constantly. Of course their destiny changes in the novel, which I don't like... more>> sometimes. Protagonist is developing more and more as a person and still learning things. Not some fantasy novel with OP MC and golden thigh ML. But it's hard to follow each person in this novel. There are just too many characters, big and small all appear and disappear throughout the story. Each small character has their name, some even 2-3 different names including nicknames, and it's in chinese so forget about learning their names. Some are mentioned like in only 1 chapter and we don't learn what happened to them afterwards. After 50 chapters you don't remember the said character and get confused when they reappear for another small scene. But I might drop this novel. I am scared to see what author might have written about Mongolians. It's an independent country. Looks like the author is planning to make it part of China in her novel. Did the author dream about swallowing Mongolia and completing thousands years of Chinese dream at least in the novel? That would be very weird and controversial. Most Chinese novels don't directly address Mongols and Huns, they only write things like northern barbarians attacking or nomadic tribe from the north. Name of the countries, their rulers name would be fake. So it's fine if you're only taking inspiration and not directly mentioning certain country or race. But this novel uses real countries, real history and real historical figures. It would be f@cked up thing to do if author decides to make independent countries disappear and make them into vassal state or smth.

Can't be lower than 5 stars!!! This is that great. No cliche face slapping everywhere, no jealousy palace fight. The story mainly focuses almost on the pure political journey of Lin Yuan, MC. Even with little romance, the author could still make the story full of feelings. Love all characters and I, even more, love the fact that the author wasn't really that ruthless and kills as many likable characters as they can just to amp things up. So in a heavy war-political story like this, it isn't that gloomy... more>> and dark.

Definitely can't miss this story. <<less

Surprised by how much I loved this. The plot pretty much resolves around MC accidentally building a kingdom from ground up. At first he only wanted a place that will be a safe haven but as time went on it became logical to also conquer other cities. POV periodically changes from how MC's action affects them: dying soldiers pov, prisoner pov, peasants pov, etc etc

It has little to no romance and it's one of the few fics that I honestly don't mind because it makes perfect sense. Who can have... more>> time for romance when you are too busy making a kingdom and revolutionizing the world? <<less

I love how there isn't a Romance tag on this novel, because the romance angle takes the farthest of the back seats in this story. AND I LOVE IT!!!!

The world has a character of it's own and even the MC technically takes a back seat in presence of the world building that the writing portrayed. It's amazing in my opinion.

Another thing I absolutely love is the jumping perspectives. If this were any other empire building novel where the MC's perspective is dominant, you might start feeling that everything is just... more>> magically going in his favor, but the way it's written, it really doesn't feel that way anymore.

The only minor gribe I have with this story is that it sometimes (very few times) underestimates the acceptance level of old, classic Asian people *sigh* But the character developments are thoroughly satisfying nonetheless, so I see no reason to not read this, at all.

Bit I still think this novel is totally worth the read, and for those who are not reading it because of the BL aspect, I ask you to just try it. Like I said, the BL or even romance element is almost non existant, so give it a shot first, before coming to conclusions. <<less
