If you liked Natsume Yuujinchou and The Morose Mononokean, this story is right up your alley.

The story is episodic like the two and while each arc has its own mystery to focus on, there is still and overarching "main" mystery in the background. The mysteries are fun in of themselves and come with interesting twists at times. Other than that, its kinda hard to talk about the plot because it IS a mystery, so its better to just read it yourself. Synopsis also just speaks for itself.

The characters are very... more>> fun to follow too. Yu Dan is a little... well, simple is best I guess. But its more endearing rather than exasperatedly s*upid. He's not like other protagonists who continue to make the same mistakes: he always tries his best and has a lot of heart to him. And Mr Fox (yh, I know his name is Baek Ran, but his name was too similar to a certain other character in another series *cough cough* EX Rank, go read it *cough*, and I kinda wanted to spite him in my own way) is a very good foil who acts calm and collected in contrast to Yu Dan. (If you read Morose Mononokean, it's basically Ashiya/Abeno's dynamic). The side characters are also pretty funny and endearing. They don't feel one-note or stereotypical and have depth and feeling to them. Altogether, their interactions are fun to read/watch and they always have me coughing my lungs out each chapter (unless they're making me sob my eyes out).

Translator is doing a great job. Writing is easy to follow, which is impressive considering this author's writing style is a bit difficult.

TLDR: great read if you like youkai mysteries, trauma, and East-Asian brush stroke watercolour paintings. <<less
