I’m honestly surprised by the low rating this story has—I’ve quite enjoyed it so far.

Set in 1947 and centered around the mafia, it's not your typical romance with fluffy moments, so don’t go in expecting that. The story and relationships reflect the darker tone of the time period and setting.

I found the main characters really compelling. Meiyan, the MC, is stubborn but not in an obnoxious way—it feels like a natural result of his trauma and upbringing. He’s clearly someone who’s been hurt, and he struggles to trust people, which... more>> makes sense given his background.

Han, the male lead, is a powerful syndicate leader and one of the most influential figures in the underground world. He’s quite a three-dimensional character. I actually really like his personality—not because he’s flawless, but because he feels human. He’s possessive and dominant, yes, but he also shows real care. He knows how to apologize when he's wrong, and there's consistent communication between the characters, which is refreshing. Misunderstandings happen, but they’re usually resolved fairly quickly.

Now, there’s something that might be off-putting for some readers: Han sometimes refers to Meiyan in his internal monologue like he’s a wounded animal that needs to be tamed. If that kind of dynamic bothers you, this might not be your thing. Personally, it didn’t bother me too much, but it’s worth pointing out.

The beginning of the story can be a little confusing, so here’s a quick summary (spoilers ahead) :

Spoiler

The story kicks off with Meiyan being kidnapped by Han. Han suspects him of being involved in the recent mu*der of one of his close friends and trusted workers. Han had seen Meiyan speaking with a police officer and another crime boss named Chen.

Chen, by the way, is another powerful syndicate leader and someone who’s obsessed with Meiyan. Their relationship has a very toxic, abusive history. So, naturally, Meiyan is caught in the middle of two dangerous men with very different motives.

After the kidnapping, Han subjects Meiyan to a traumatic interrogation that includes a deadly twist of Russian Roulette. He then keeps Meiyan under house arrest, intending to use him to get information about Chen and the mu*der. A few days later, Meiyan is unknowingly used as bait. When he returns to his apartment, he’s attacked by an assassin. Han saves him and gives him a choice: return to his abusive past with Chen, or work for Han as his personal barber. From there, the story picks up and explores their evolving relationship.

Their dynamic is complicated from the start—Meiyan feels conflicted, drawn to Han but deeply hesitant to trust him. Han insists he's just using Meiyan, but it becomes obvious that he cares much more than he lets on.

Overall, it’s a really interesting read, especially if you enjoy 20th-century mafia stories with darker themes and complex romance. There are 20 chapters, split into smaller parts that are easy to read through. I haven’t finished it yet, but I’d recommend giving it a try. Just wanted to share my perspective in case you were unsure because of the low rating—it definitely has more depth than it’s being given credit for. <<less

Highly agree with Nighttime's review, they do a great job summarizing the beginning of the novel so go read their review for what I think is a perfect description of Barber in New York.

Warning for readers getting into this novel, it's not fluffy or light-hearted at all. If you want a light read, this isn't the novel for you. It's dark and grungy and raw, the author drags you through all the desperate human emotions you can think of. For those like me who like to know if it's HE... more>> or BE ahead of time, it's definitely HE! Enjoy the journey to get there though :')

I love the depth of the characters in this novel. Most importantly, the 3 main characters, Meiyan, Edgar Han, and Chen Haoran, are all multi-faceted individuals, each with their own drive and beliefs. The writing doesn't waver from who they are and their ideals are both what makes them and breaks them. Even the side characters have personalities of their own and they contribute to the author's narrative, as all the characters pull you deeper and deeper into uncovering the truths in the story. The dynamic relationships between characters is a huge plus in progressing through the novel!

I will mention I believe this novel has some low ratings due to possibly terrible MTL that's been posted to Chrysanthemum Garden? There are some parts in the beginning that were sort of hard to understand and I'm not sure if it was because the author was trying to be profound or if the author was being so profound, the translator/MTL could not get the author's message across. It's worth it to keep reading past those tricky parts though! I still believe it's a good novel overall. Some other evil MTL mistakes that I personally wasn't a fan of and it made the novel terribly difficult to read at times includes some spoilers I'll hide below

Spoiler

The pronoun usage for certain characters was all over the place. The MC (Meiyan) is very clearly a man and for reasons you may find out, he hates being referred to as a woman, but in the TL, MC sometimes has she/her pronouns. I've only seen it in a few places which is not as bad as one FEMALE character using he/him pronouns for the entire rest of the novel after they were introduced with the correct (she/her) pronouns. It really hurts to read because this character is the other half of a lesbian couple, an important side character, so she shows up often and she's always referred to as "He did this.." or "He said that..." Even in parts where the author mentions the character entered the women's restroom, wears feminine makeup, or even directly calls themself a woman, they still use he/him pronouns. Other characters, like maids, have had their correct pronouns used once and then the rest of the novel for whatever reason it turns into he/him AGAIN. One of the maids who is mentioned more often is turned into a guy even after her rouge lipstick was mentioned (this is the 1940s in a regular household, no man is gonna be wearing makeup, I mean come on...). I know MTL novels can slip up the pronouns once in a while but for 95% of the novel? Even if this was done in MTL, it was a sloppy editing job. Well that's my 2 cents on why I think the rating for this novel is so low.

Overall, I think the way this novel uses the underground crime world to explore dynamic character relationships (somewhat toxic relationships albeit, but they grow) is definitely worth a read! It's dark but emotional and I really enjoyed unraveling the story. <<less
