Becoming Popular Through The “All Villains” Variety Show

The variety show “The Most Hated Her and Him” invited six of the most disliked celebrities voted by netizens and industry insiders to participate in the recording.

The show became a hit as soon as it aired, and netizens called it the most unethical variety show they had ever seen.

However, on the day before the official recording of the show, Shang Lu suddenly realized that the world she lived in was a novel and she was a cannon fodder supporting actress, as well as the number one female star of this show, and most hated female celebrity voted by netizens.

Shang Lu exclaimed, “VIP viewing area, here I come!”

***

During a game segment, Shang Lu won and gained the priority to choose her room.

A princess syndrome actress arrogantly said, “Hey, let’s exchange rooms.”

Everyone thought they were going to have a conflict, but Shang Lu smiled and said, “It’s 50,000 yuan for one night, 20% off for two nights, do you prefer WeChat or Alipay?”

The princess syndrome actress :???

The drama queen actress deliberately tried to steal Shang Lu’s spotlight.

But, Shang Lu calmly took out a customized face mask from her bag that was specifically made for the other person’s face and said, “It’s all you, don’t worry, it will all be broadcasted as you.”

The actress : “…”

A tyrannical idol and an unsociable actor almost started a fight, and the show’s staff quickly asked Shang Lu to mediate. Shang Lu, who was enjoying the spectacle, spontaneously hosted, “Ladies and gentlemen, what we are about to show you is the annual boxing championship! The loser will be disfigured and exit the entertainment industry!”

The two people who were about to fight : …

Audience : …we thought we would have fun, but they realized that Shang Lu seemed to be having even more fun than us.

After a series of crazy antics, everyone assumed that Shang Lu must have become a public enemy, but…

No one knows when it started, the “th**ny” celebrities in the entertainment industry who were fearless and unafraid of anything began to act subtly different towards Shang Lu.

The drama queen actress took the initiative to ask Shang Lu for advice on how to play a new role;

The unsociable male actor waited in the scorching sun for three hours to buy a limited edition cake for Shang Lu;

The princess syndrome actress and the irritable male idol almost fought over the opportunity to go to the amusement park with Shang Lu the next day.

Even the infamous tongue-lashing director, who was known to be strict on actors’ performances, publicly said that it was an honor for him if Shang Lu agreed to play the female lead in his movie.

The haters were confused. Where did all the “villains” go? Why did you become Shang Lu’s fan club after participating in the show? This doesn’t make sense!

Later, they found out that there were more “hidden fans” of Shang Lu.

The heir of the top-tier wealthy family, Chi Yan, had a photo of seven-year-old Shang Lu stepping on a little boy’s bu*t as his phone screensaver.

When asked about the reason, Chi Yan replied leisurely, “Can’t you tell? It’s because I have a crush on her.”

Others were shocked.

Wait a minute… isn’t that little boy who was bullied Chi Yan himself?!

What about the secret crush? We can see your wedding ring shining, you know!

Beautiful and sharp-tongued fun-loving salted fish X Arrogant and protective domineering president.

Lovely story!! This is more FL centric, but I really loved the overall plot, and the characters were all so amazing. I'm glad the conflict with the cheating couples didn't get dragged out too long. The only thing I wished to be done better was the relationship, because it feels like it really takes a backseat to the other plot points. The relationship revel to the public only comes in the last few chapters, so dont go expecting dog food anytime soon. I was initially hesitant to read this because... more>> I've had bad experiences reading from this translating site, but the translation for this novel was actually really good <<less

I loved this novel. It was well thought out and realistic in it's relationships. The best part was that it never had a dull moment there were moments when I couldn't stop laughing to scenes where I cried. I want to read more by this author as this was 💯

I LOVE IT.

It has made me laugh so much but also tear up. A healthy balance! The translation is also very good! Outside of a few misgendering instances, everything is easy to read. Its been a while since I've been hooked to a novel like this.

9.5/10 100% would recommend

It's incredibly funny, sweet and it has both wholesome and angsty moments. The ML is top tier, green flag incarnated, caring, devoted, funny, he didn't any have any sort of trauma that made him a s*umbag and he was super lovely all the time.

I love the relationship of the cast members of the show, they had so much chemistry, it was actually funny and I was indeed laughing my ass off several times. The FL was very resolute in dissolving her ties to the s*umbags in her... more>> life, she didn't go over the top to ruin either of them, they all dug their own graves (with special exceptions that include the ML's touch here and there) but she doesn't gloat. She likes those who like her, she cares for those she sympathizes with, she works hard at her job, she has fun, she has insecurities and trauma like the rest of us, but once she regained her freedom, she decides to be true to herself and no one else.

I do admit, there are some incredible plot armor points in some parts, but mostly, it's somewhat plausible all the good things that happened to her. <<less

I'll keep this review short and sweet.

I love this novel, the interactions between the FL and variety show crew, they are hilarious and wholesome, a strong bond created throughout the show.

The slag males and green tea bit*h get their comeuppance while FL gets the happy ending she deserves.

... more>> ML is a very sweet silent protector. I'm a bit sad that there wasn't a very heavy focus on the romance but the dog food we got us very sweet.

This will probably stay as one of my favourite novels on this site for a long time.

Thanks to the translator for choosing this novel, giving an excellent translation despite a few small errors here and there and for giving explanations for some of the foreign terms and bane.

I hope you can enjoy reading this as much as I have :) <<less

This is a good read, it’s pretty easy going and I like how we get to the strengths and weaknesses of the main characters while watching her find her way, there’s some parts that I don’t favor but for 99% of it I do love. It’s very funny and there’s many people that you can’t help but love.

3.7 stars rating from me. This was very enjoyable in the first half but then I felt that it got a bit repetitive and boring... there isn't much drama regarding OG 'plot' which is fine but I felt that the romance between male lead and MC was very neglected. Had it been written about with more depth and in good combination with her reality tv series, it would have lessened the monotonous feel. Or maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it so it felt a little draggy...... more>> idk but I am convinced that the romance felt more of a subplot kinda thing that was meh-like potential not explored well.

regarding the ex, I pity him a bit for having zero freedom and being a puppet on a broken string... sure doesn't excuse his behavior but his life is also a bit sad.

the MC's brother in my opinion was the most pitiful out of it all... even more than MC imo. The torture, the pain, the guilt... sigh.

This novel was a great read. Ive been so bored an unable to find anything interesting to read but luckily this showed up. It didn't disappoint.

I hated it.

The story was fun for about 25 chapters, but then it got boring, there was too many chapters focusing on the entertainment industry and filming, and not enough about the romance.

But the part which made me hate the story was the fact that in the main story the brother was miserable until the end.

Spoiler

I mean he was ab*sed by their father for nothing and instead of giving him a happy ending, he lost the girl he loved cause she decided not to wait for him and marry someone else (even though he looked for her and just couldn't find her), his sister decided she doesn't want him in her life, and he still blames himself and accepts all this. I hate that he said it's good his lover didn't wait since he had found her so late.

[collapse]

The whole story was ruined for me at that point it was so heart breaking and so on my nerves that the author did that to him.

And the extras didn't help cause they were not the main story. <<less

The very first thing I want to point out is the fact that the genre "Romance" as per description does NOT fit this novel. Whereas the tags "slow romance" and "romantic subplot" fit it perfectly. This is just a warning for all those who, like me, came for the romance.

The novel itself centers around our female lead, Shang Lu who, thanks to a suddenly appearing system found out that she was in fact the supporting female lead in a novel, engaged to the male lead. She manages to free herself... more>> from the shackles of the original novel and embarcs on her own journey, becoming a loved and successful actress after joining a variety show. That's the whole story in a nutshell, you can take the title literally, as the whole novel from beginning to end is mainly about her interactions in the variety show.

Well, it's a slice-of-life novel, so you can imagine the pace xD

Our female lead Shang Lu is the youngest daughter of the rich Shang family. Her mother died during childbirth which resulted in her father and older brother resenting her for it. The older brother will at one point find out just how wrong and cruel he had been towards his sister and regrets it,
Spoiler

if you're curious, that happens somewhere beginning in the 40th chapters and he comes to apologize to FL I Ch. 50?

[collapse]
as for the father, so far there has been no change, he's right and everyone else has to shut up. *shrugs*

Due to the mother having engaged her daughter to her best friend's son during pregnancy, FL is bound to the male lead of the novel, they are childhood friends but as you can imagine, the male lead has no interest in her aside from her wealth and family connections. The s*umbag (I think his name was Jiang Yi) has his own heroine with whom he had been lovers for a few years already and if I understood it correctly,

Spoiler

Ning Lan (the heroine of the original novel) is a transmigrator.

[collapse]

FL is a hated protagonist. Quite literally, as the first few chapters contain nothing else other than almost everyone bashing her twice around the earth for being a mistress, bad actor, etc etc etc. Her supporters are few, one of them being her manager, the other being another childhood friend, our most beloved ML Chi Yan. (I really want to ask the translator if this "Chi Yan" is translated in the same way as I've read in another novel, where "Chi Yan" meant "Crimson Flame" ?!)

From childhood to adulthood, our ML was always around FL, supporting her in his own way, mostly indirect by mocking her to get her out of a troubled mood (reminds me of young boys tugging at girls braids etc) or directly by comforting her when she was crying or being shunned by her fiance. As a proper ML, he is naturally a successful CEO. Quite shameless and doesn't hesitate to tease and annoy our FL, but he's endearing doing so because as a reader you can see he's just acting tsundere in order to distract her.

If you read the summary, you'll basically know everything important about the novel. The variety show has 6 permanent guests who have been voted for by netizens and for every episode which spans about 2 days? (sry forgot how long it takes) there's an additional guest joining them. Those guests are not hated but most of the time very prominent people. The first guest is the heroine, followed by idols, a director etc. The show itself loves to set traps but it doesn't take long for everyone to find that our FL is extremely smart, mostly discovering the true purpose of each task or setup very early.

As you can see, I haven't finished the novel yet, still about 30ish chapters left for me to read, but I think this is still enough to voice my opinion about this novel.

We have a brainless fangirl and FL's first female friend (you can take the "brainless" part quite literally), a young idol who reminds me of a chihuahua on drugs (easily excited, shameless and very loud, but he's not a bad guy, he speaks before thinking and sometimes skips the "thinking" part altogether), a famous actress, a young and silent actor and a very sharp tongued director. (director as in film director!!)

I like the director for being blunt, the quiet actor is also adorable, whereas the princess-syndrome-brainless-fangirl is seriously getting on my nerves, I can't understand how FL can be so patient with her. And the young idol... he's really not a bad guy, but loves to brag and acts and speaks without thinking, which are points I personally don't really like. Overall the plot is really good, it's obvious the author worked very hard to deliver a great work, and I was hooked during the first 20+ chapters to the point I didn't even want to go to sleep so I could continue reading. It's just that from a certain point on the tasks of the program seem to become "boring"? There's nothing new, they always end up with the same settings, similar tasks etc, which made me take breaks while reading several times.

Personally I think, if there were more romance-actions with ML and FL, and more of their daily life outside of the variety show, I maybe won't be so... how to say it? I won't feel like I'm forcing myself to continue reading.

This may be because I don't read "non-romance" novel, I want romance, fluff and cuteness, which is seriously lacking in this novel. But since ML started to appear more frequently during FL's free time and there are hints of him getting active in pursuing FL, I'm quite unwilling to drop the novel. I want to see fluff!

Which brings me to another point I'm questioning. There's another tag "Dense Protagonist". I don't think FL is dense. Quite the opposite. The problem is her upbringing, she's not used being loved and doted on and just having freed herself from the s*umbag and the original novel she doesn't seem interested in another relationship, or she just hasn't thought about it yet. Moreover she just became "friends" with ML not long ago, so her not thinking in a romantic direction is logical from my point. She has both high IQ and EQ, so all it needs is a push from ML and FL will understand what's going on.

Anyway. The novel is good. The plot is good as well, but because of the lack of romance I'll only give 4 stars, not because of the novel itself but because of my own misconception because I expected a common romance novel. Maybe after finishing this novel I'll change my mind and make it five stars, who knows? <<less

I'm totally confused why I have delayed reading this story although it reminded in my reading list for a while now. But I'm undeniably happy that I finally completed it.

I want to give it a 10 star. It's mostly comedy but the backdrop is the FL's dark, gloomy and horrible childhood and her failed love obsession that was the manipulation of the plot inside the story. However everything turned out fine with a very happy ending.

The romance part has much too less presence - the only drawback I could find.... more>> But I love the ML - he has a tiny bit of tsundere nature mixed with indefinite indulgence to the FL.

I'll wait for more from the Author. Lastly - thanks to the Translator for an awesome job. <<less

4.2/5~ I liked it. Usually, books that have the "world she lived in was a novel and she was a cannon fodder supporting actress etc" trope is very cliche and run of the mill but this was comedic yet heartwarming. Chapters that were more serious regarding her family background and how it affects her and her outlook on life, darker situations that we come across, and the relationships between different characters are where the author excelled at imo. They were realistic, touching and it was well-written. I did think the... more>> novel highlighted too much of the variety show and the antics that were shown on it. It just became too redundant and excessive so I found myself scrolling through it. I personally dislike reading so many fan comments like that and it felt like too many fillers to me. Dialogue in those scenes makes the work seem more amateurish too. The ML was truly a green flag. He respects her and her opinions, tries his best to make her happy, and patiently waits for her. Romance is subtle and more so at the latter end of the novel but when there are scenes of these two together it's very sweet. <<less

I love this story. It wasn't like a typical villainess's comeback story that was full of face slapping here and there. In fact, the story focused more on the reality show that involved MC and her friends rather than MC's romantic relationship story. She didn't even bother taking revenge on people who wronged her and focused more on herself.

Although the lack of romantic moments between MC and ML was a bit regrettable but I still love reading their interaction because ML was one of my favorite green flag ML from... more>> the novels that I've read so far. He was really considerate of MC and always respected her choice.

The other regrettable thing was MC's relationship with her brother.

Spoiler

At least MC still had ML and her friends but Shang Mu was alone. He lost MC as a sister and although MC already forgave him, she still couldn't treat Shang Mu as her brother. Shang Mu also lost his love because of his father and after meeting her again, she already had someone else which was really heartbreaking to read.

But there's still hope though because in the end, MC gave her wedding bouquet to Shang Mu, wishing him to be happy which was really a thing that I would love to see.

Aside from that, this is really an enjoyable read for me. <<less

4.3 / 5 ⭐

I love our FL & ML.

I also like all of the supporting characters, they are "alive", not just the main characters.

... more>> The thing that I want to complain (isn't even an actual complaint) is maybe about the chapter length. The chapters are not even 100 in complete, but I feel like each chapter is actually 10 chapter! It feels soooo long! I thought I've already read a lot but it's actually still on chapter 20 lol.

Late romance but don't worry, the romance is more than enough!

Also, if you're worried because of the overused CEO ML & Actress FL plot, the ML in this novel didn't overly intervene FL's career like in other stories.

Not the best but it was a great read! <<less

Becoming Popular is kind of like a story about a MC who doesn't really give a hoot about anything other than being happy. It also feels a lot longer than it is. It does have a fairly strong start but it has some hiccups.

For example, the third and fourth episodes of Variety Show's shooting schedule, begin to feel redundant. I get that it's trying to show how she interacts with the different characters but it doesn't really contribute to the rest of the story. Then there is a lot of... more>> "netizen chat" about the show, so much so that it makes the story drag. I do enjoy the dialogue for in-story fans but not when it is in nearly every chapter and very obviously used as filler.

Outside that, it seems like the author couldn't decide whether they wanted a serious or comical story because some parts are incredibly dark (such as the MC being locked in a dark room as a child or the other ab*se she suffered at the hands of her father) while other parts are very light-hearted (like a 3-legged race won by climbing or the crossdressing arc). Both in a story can make something well rounded but they seem disjointed here. Especially the longer the story goes on

The MC is a young actress who has been treated like crap by her wealthy family and her fiance. Her father has been taking out his feelings on both the MC and her brother. Still, she followed through with trying to be a good daughter and got engaged to the boy her father chose. That is until she has a dream that reveals she is just the cannon fodder villain in the love story between her fiance and another woman. From that point on, she begins living her best life as a mildly EQ-stunted but clever woman.

Spoiler

Being EQ stunted is justifiable by her backstory which is incredibly dark for such a comedic story. Her father views her as her mother's mu*derer (as the mom died during childbirth), and while he wouldn't physically hurt her, he did a lot of emotional and mental damage. Such as locking her in a storage room for weeks.

He also physically ab*sed her brother whenever she did something wrong. This resulted in her brother growing distant and eventually disliking his sister.

By the end of all that, she really doesn't know how to be loved and regularly asks normal people hypothetical questions that reflect her upbringing. Even asking a woman, who adopted an orphan, how the parents would have felt if even one of them had survived to take care of their own child.

[collapse]

The ML has been in love with the MC since they were children but he never acted on it because she claimed her fiance was the only person for her in her life. He did have a moment of self-awareness and decided to leave but quickly realized that he couldn't cope with a life without her (yeah, he's that hooked). He ranges from quite cute to a little creepy (the dude has a picture of her on his desk long before they ever become a couple). That being said, he takes a back seat to... well... to everything for nearly the entire story.

Spoiler

He shows up roughly three times before the mid-30s chapters and never for very long. However, he does show up at a pivotal part when another actor goes nuts and tries to kill the MC and her friend. And then we don't see him again for another few chapters.

[collapse]

The story follows the MC's life as she films a variety show and other shows/movies in between episodes. We have her blowing away a director and screenwriter with her acting skills, gender-bending for a tv show, acting as a guest on a romance variety show, and getting attacked by a crazed actor (all in the first 40-ish chapters I might add). At the beginning, she argues with her insane father before deciding to cut ties with her family and move on. There isn't any reconciliation with her family, only acceptance of how messed up both she and her brother ended up.

Spoiler

Seriously, the brother ends up with scars from being beaten. Of course, the brother also plotted his revenge against his father through a medication that had the side effect of hallucinations. However, the hallucinations were a one-time thing which led to the father spiralling out of control and becoming addicted to drugs.

Dad also tried to unalive himself because he wanted to see his wife again.

[collapse]

Overall, this story isn't my cup of tea. I find that it's too run-on (the main story really feels longer than 83 chapters) and pretty bipolar in switching from super-comedic to super-dark. The writing is average but the characters are kind of fun when not faced with the despair of their backstories. <<less

I haven't finished this up yet cuz by chapter 79 it gets a bit boring, at least for me.

BUT THIS IS A TREAT. I actually quite enjoyed reading up to here, so thanks to the translator team that brought this to us.

ML > determined, constant and truly accommodating and understanding of her.

... more>> My heart goes out for him but then she was under control of that messed up narrative before.

MC > I truly loved her, she's great and actually pretty chill. She doesn't go out of her way for revenge at all but she ain't a pushover at all either. She'll bite back and she'll protect herself and the people she loves.

Spoiler

This novel has many weak points though, like her rushed adopted family that truly came out of nowhere. I'm talking more about the adopted parents than the adopted sister.

The sister actually had a build up but then kind of was dropped off in the story, at least at the point I am in, she doesn't have much presence anymore.

And her situation with her family was quite... idk, I don't think it was executed as well as it could have been, though there was some interesting things that were really well done, it's like it was missing something.

The system thing was honestly such a random thing. The story could have done without it, she could have just woken up from the novel's control on her own. The system variable felt misused and unnecessary, which feels to me like the author had no enough time to decide what the hell they wanted to do with it.
