“Thank you for back then. Thanks to you…”

“Who are you?”

Suddenly, crazy women started clinging to me.

I don’t remember, but apparently, I did what’s called a “save-and-run”.

The start is like every single novel of this genre: The MC suddenly remembers his past life. He has been reincarnated into the world of a novel he used to read, a few years before the start of the story. He is to become a third-rate villain with a bad ending. Now he has a system that issues quests and gives him skills, with the potential of turning the originally useless Ethan into an OP character. With his knowledge and system, he tries to alter his fate.

Yeah, it's so cliché... more>> that I was wondering how the author didn't get bored with his/her story...

So what's different? At least for the first few chapters... not much.

The MC is careful not to do too well too quickly, because he understands that raising expectations means it becomes easier to disappoint people. As a matter of fact, he even uses his terrible reputation to forcefully save the first heroine. That's a bit different. Either way, the MC has nothing good going for himself at first (no hidden power, no special talent, nothing), so he can't even do too well too quickly even if he wanted to... That's also a bit different from the usual. The MC is quite shameless and pretty funny. It's also nice that he doesn't suddenly become an all-knowing MC with plans for everything. That's a bit different too. He will become a dark mage (who consoles the souls). That's interesting. He doesn't think: 'I hate losing heroines, if the protagonist can't do it, I'll make them happy'. That's nice.

And that's about it...

Because the story actually starts at chapter 19.

Spoiler

When he has to pay the price for changing the losing heroines' life course. His memory of them is sealed and conditions are set for him to get his memories back: love, protect, lean on. They do remember him, though. Also, it turns out that our MC is Aslan (the hero) from another timeline, who saved the world, married the empress and regretted everything as he grew old.

[collapse]

Still, the heroines are interesting. Leena is the talented and devoted childhood friend of Aslan, meant to devote herself to him and be forgotten. She's been sold to Ethan by her unloving parents. Ariel is the shield and the moon of the empire, whose existence has been concealed behind the dazzling light of the sunny crown princess, born on the same day. And Lucia is the saintess persecuted and haunted by the dead.

Spoiler

There's also the Goddess who had to pay the price for saving the world by being forgotten by everyone, and sent him to this timeline.

And also the princess herself, who he misunderstands as a power hungry selfish person, but who's actually just a lonely girl.

[collapse]

Anyway, while the start feels like déjà vu, after the story actually gets to its starting point, it becomes more interesting and enjoyable. Let's see how it develops. <<less
