This novel was a bit falsely advertised to me as not being the same dogblood as other novels of the 188 series, so I was definitely taken aback by the amount of drama in it. I will say, it is definitely true that this gong is by far the least s*um of them all, as most of his behavior can be explained by his childhood circumstances and PTSD, but he does also make mistakes that are in some ways almost unforgivable, and goes through somewhat of a crematorium (though definitely... more>> relatively less intense) just as any other gong in the series.

The plot of this novel is not as solely focused on the relationship dramatics as other novels in this series, and there is definitely a lot of plot, mostly revolving around a series of arson cases that MC and ML investigate together, which all do build up into unraveling an underlying conspiracy. The pacing is well executed and the climax I felt was perfectly done, with every moment prior adding to the suspense. There really isn't a dull moment despite the longer length of this novel, and each case was interesting in its own right. While no side character involved in the plot is that developed compared to the main characters, they do still add to the overall world building in a meaningful way.

I usually have some difficulty getting into crime novels at first, but this one was able to hook me from the start with the interesting character designs and the hilarious first meeting of the main CP, in which the ML Gong Yingxian mistakes the MC Ren Yi for a pe*ophile after his little sister, and proceeds to immediately spray him in the face with disinfectant. Despite their initial bad impression of one another from this encounter though, they are then forced to cooperate with one another to investigate an arson case, and their relationship pretty quickly shifts to mutual respect and then again to friendship.

While the MC quite quickly falls for ML after they become friends, there is quite a long pining arc in this novel, as the ML starts off homophobic and traumatized, and the MC would rather pine in secret than risk losing the friendship. They do also enter into somewhat of a fake relationship for a big part of the novel, as the ML asks MC to teach him what s*x is like (lol), but the main dogblood isn't actually related to this, and only really occurs closer to the end of the novel. There isn't too much of a chasing arc as circumstances kind of force the MC to forgive the ML sooner rather than later, but personally I didn't really mind the lack of one, as I felt the ML in this case really didn't do anything that unforgivable.

The writing style is fluid, and SQC always is able to evoke pretty much every emotion for me, from the exasperated amusement I felt over them sleeping together "for science" to the utter shock over ML's later actions. The plot twists and the crime drama were really interesting, and I especially loved the characterization of the ML, as he had such interesting reasons for behaving as he does. His PTSD is explored really well, and I always do love how SQC is able to bring out such interesting sides of human nature. I really loved his character development, and how he genuinely grew as a person from his relationship with MC.

Definitely one of the best novels in the 188 series, and probably the one I would recommend the most, if only the translation was complete. I didn't really love the phrasing choices and general grammar of the first translator and I ended up reading from raws, so I can't comment too much on translation quality, but SQC writing is generally pretty easy to read. Overall it's a great read, if only a little frustrating at times, but given that it's a 188 series novel, it's really just part of the formula, and I do love her brand of dogblood!

Also this is a spoiler of sorts but on the topic of the non-con TW that the carrd addresses:
Spoiler

the context is that ML near the end reverts back to an almost childlike state due to PTSD, and MC gives him a handjob, then ML's psychologist basically tells MC that he should take it even further to help heal ML's brain and make him revert back to his normal state. And then as prescribed by the doctor (lol??) they have s*x while ML is still in a basically nonverbal state, though he's definitely... very cooperative? A bit strange advice from a psychologist I can't lie, and really I just block that scene from my memory if I'm going to be honest, as it wasn't really what I would consider sound professional advice, but I guess in context MC isn't really doing anything that unethical since he was literally told to by the doctor... I'll just leave it at that as this is 188 after all and it's not like we read these novels for the most morally sound experience...

This was really good. Very realistic relationship among the leads, no boring moments (if you love action, thriller) in my case I was a little bored during those scenes because I went for romance and was not in the mood for action. Anyways, still it was a good read for me. I was going a little crazy when it was revealed that hyuang Yun was already captured 3 months ago, and this was the fake Huang yun that was working for the police, like damn.

Sun dingyi, you'll always be remembered. We love you. Your sacrifice is something not many people can do it. Ren yi was someone with a hero complex and thought of himself as invincible. Because seriously, how many times has he been in the hospital? 4-5 times probably. Still love him tho. Specially when he didn't give in to GY. The grovel was short, but realistic. GY is a adorable kid at heart but can be ruthless towards his enemies. He loves RY, but the thing he does towards the end,

Spoiler

He didn't tell RY about his plan, and even though he gave him his bulletproof vest that was shot by the fake Huang yun, even though everything was under his control, if it were to be me, I don't think I'll be able to trust him again. Because it did break two of RY's ribs regardless of the vest. But I do understand why he did what he did. Because ren yi is too reckless in my opinion. Too emotional. So things needed to be hidden from him, especially because he has this hero complex.

The ultimate villain is someone you probably won't expect to be.

[collapse]

But I have to add, I really hated that this was almost 200 chapters long including the 3 extras. And the way it took so long for villain to be caught. So many people's lives were lost, you'll hate hate whoever was behind it. The "god of light" and the "burn people so that their soul can become pure" was very annoying. I just wanted to transmigrate and beat the sh*t out of these people. Because they really needed some good ass beating. Again very realistic, but it made me drop the novel almost. Still I wanted to see those people suffer, probably burn them the same way but not to the point of losing their lives, treat them in the hospital, break their minds, still not letting them die and lastly broadcast it to the world when they're beheaded. Probably then I would have been satisfied, because the way these monsters made the common people suffer was enraging. But that wasn't shown. And the reason why I have rated this a 4/5

It was heartbreaking to watch the ML and MC lose their loved ones. Anyways,

The s*x was good. GY was jealous and needy. Not obsessive though. 4/5🌟

One of the latest in the 188 series, but the mildest in terms of angst and ab*se. The ML is a sweetheart, he's just a tsundere with a traumatic past. He and the MC get off on the wrong foot, but when forced to work together to solve a case related to arson, they quickly find common ground and become friends, which gradually turn into deeper feelings.

Imagine if one of those funny buddy cop dramas that Hollywood used to spit out, where the main characters are complete opposites by still... more>> become friends when they team up to fight the bad guys? Imagine that scenario, but in China and one of the protagonists is a fireman - and also the 'bromance' gets a twist. And also there's a lot of angst and some sad parts.

The MC and ML fight against a group of crazy arsonists to save lives - while at the same time trying to solve the mystery surrounding the ML's past. The MC is an outgoing, brave and open-minded firefighter with a big heart - and he's gay. He's willing to constantly risk his life to save people, inspired by his dad who's a retired firefighter suffering from Alzheimers. The ML is an introverted, genius policeman with a tragic past and a specialty in chemistry. He's also very rich, very dedicated to his job - and at the same time he's a virg*n with severe mysophobia. He may or may not also have a problem with gay guys.

This book is almost double the length of most books in the 188 series, but it also has way more plot. The plot and setting are quite good - SQC obviously did a ton of research when writing about firefighting methods, fire management, chemistry, police work etc. The setting and descriptions are really topnotch, and this is some of he most fleshed-out stories. The side characters take up just the right amount of space - they never overshadow the CP, but they have enough 'screen time' that you care about what happens to them.

This novel has it all - humor, romance, tragedy, action, suspense, interesting characters and a good story.

The CP have one of the best dynamics I've ever come across. The way their relationships develops feels very natural, and it's both sweet and funny to see how the ML gradually opens up to the kind MC, and how they mutually fall for each other, but are too scared or confused to confess. The MC thinks the ML is homophobic (he isn't really though), while the ML isn't good at dealing with feelings or having empathy. It's nice to have a story where the shou is the flirty one and the gong is the shy one for once, and their chemistry is just the best. The ML is very precious, the only 188 gong who's not a s*um at all (he does some morally questionable things though, but compared to the others in the series is quite mild). For that reason the crematorium part (breakup and the ML chasing the MC to win him back) is quite short.

The side characters are engaging - especially the dad, the female cop and the work colleague are great, but also the butler. The way Sheng Bo fawns over the MC and is super relieved that someone actually likes his baby boy (the ML) is hilarious.

Spoiler

From the beginning I thought he seemed to be pushing them together, and turns out he had a bet going on with Qiu Yan about when the ML would lose his v*rginity (LOL) - so I'm sure he tried to be a matchmaker from the beginning.

[collapse]

One of the few 188 novels without noncon - there's maybe something that can be classified as dubcon, but:

Spoiler

I think the author just put it there for the CP to have some fun after all the tragedy happened - it's a bit silly. Yes, the ML couldn't 100% consent due to his mental state, but he was very enthusiastic about it and later on told the MC that even though he couldn't communicate at the time, he was aware of what was going on. So calling it 'rape' as some readers have done is kind of out there, and while it might be dubcon it's pretty mild and quickly turns consensual.

[collapse]

The relationship is very healthy and supportive, and while it's not perfect, the CP do learn to communicate, set boundaries and respect each other. It's very sweet and there quite a bit of dogfood.

The CP from Years of Intoxication stop by for a cameo, and they have an important role in one of the suspense sequences. It's nice to see them being super sweet and healthy after everything they suffered. There's a minor spoiler for YOI though.

All in all this is a great novel that really highlights SQC's talent. Hope it gets a full translation, it really deserves it. <<less

I've finally completed the final novel to the 188 series. This is my most favourite novel out of the whole series. SQC says this ML is not scummy at all and he indeed is the sweetest one of all. The love story is also the sweetest.

Asides from the trope spirit of being possessive, Gong Yingxian is just a pure boy in heart. Although there's a bit of misunderstanding in the middle due to his PTSD – making him withdrawn from society and unable to understand the feelings of others, he... more>> doesn't scheme and put Renyi in harm's way. His pureness constantly makes my heart goes "kya" with his actions. The way he shows affection is also very traditional and old school which makes him very adorable. I also like how he often blushed when he got tease by Renyi. By the way, I find him a lot like Zhao Jing Xin (not those scummy things JX did but the way he looked innocent and his antics when pleading with Renyi etc.)

I love the MC Renyi very much. He is very strong at heart and outgoing. So many times he risked his life going into fire scenes, saving people, it really makes me respect fire fighters a lot. SQC did a lot of research in this and I even learnt so much about their job! He is so assuring and it hurts me when I see him sad. His dad is also a figure whom I respect a lot. He was a fire fighter through and through till the end. I love him for his love for his son and encouragement given to Renyi.

The side CP was briefly mentioned but their endings are also explained properly. I like the other side characters like Renyi's best buddy Qu Yang Bo, Qiu Yan, Sheng Bo, all their police and fire fighter members. The plot for this novel was really well laid out, it feels very robust thus the length is also the longest. I would definitely recommend this novel for a fresh breath of air. <<less

Made an account just to leave a review for this absolute gem! Thank you to author SQC for the sheer effort & research put into this, and to the translators for all their hard work to get such fluid translations for us readers to enjoy~

I agree 200% with the reviewers who support this as the best novel in the 188verse - if you wanna recc one as a starting point, Blazing Armour is pretty much the ideal 'gentle' introductory SQC novel (although after that your standards may be too high,... more>> hahaha). In the 188verse, it's got the best detailed plot and worldbuilding, some of the best side characters (HIS DAD OMFG), and ofc the pairing with the most equal footing, least toxic dynamics (well, once they settle their misunderstanding) and realistic relationship troubles with subsequent development.

MC Ren Yi:

Spoiler

The translators describe him as a 'heroic handsome firefighter' and I agree he embodies that ideal! Our MC knows he's hot and teases and flirts casually not only with ML but others, but has very good work/family ethics, a strong sense of teamwork/comradeship, knows his physical limits and adhere very strongly to his moral bottom-lines even against the ML. MC also doesn't let his world revolve solely around ML; he's got a sick dad he prioritizes over everything and is his ultimate bottomline, a job he loves and career he wants to advance, and a supportive network of colleagues & friends. He's pretty much an ideal boyfriend ah!

[collapse]

ML Gong Yingxian:

Spoiler

Described as a 'mysophobic high IQ criminal investigative police', our ML is a highly intelligent workaholic who is quite resourceful and is very, very, very determined at all (mostly) lawful costs to capture the arsonist that mu*dered his family and traumatized him with pyrophobia. ML lets his guard down towards and gets very possessive over MC early into their working partnership, but, due to his very low EQ and nonexistent love experience, does NOT react well at all upon meeting MC's former lover. Although his character gradually develops to be more considerate for and of MC, his narrow single-minded focus towards capturing the arsonist, his general inability to emphasise with other ppl and his taking-for-granted of MC's forgiveness eventually touches MC's own bottomline...

[collapse]

Their relationship:

Spoiler

Not the best first impression, quite the angsty 'getting together' full of prolonged misunderstandings (mutual love but ML and MC initially think the other only want to be FWB), but MC and ML definitely uphold their own principles and stand their ground in this relationship; most of their progress is due to their individual character development and reactions to the increasingly dangerous cases.

Btw yes, they DO IT in chp 100; MC in his own words "has always been 1 (top) " so "how could he, a pure 1 who has never been a 0, be reduced to giving meat to inexperienced little virg*ns", but only for GYX would he spread himself so clearly wide open that there's absolutely NO way ML can miss his hole (which he kept doing hahaha).

Their breakups (yes it happens TWICE) are also realistic; MC believes "as long as we like each other, most difficulties can be overcome", but because he's the type who will never "use results to weigh importance" and sacrifice his lover over "more important things", he cannot accept that "the person I love treats me like this" and would rather breakup early than let their love turn into hatred. Ofc ML doesn't agree because "no matter what you say or what you do, I will never give up on you".

Our ML's wife-chasing is quite mild compared to other 188verse novels, mostly because as a policeman ML isn't supposed to act against the law (although honestly some of his actions are clearly borderline), and because the duo are dedicated and professional enough to continue investigating together even after breaking up. They do get back together naturally too, given the nature of their professions where everyday could be their last and the increasing fatality of the plot. (BRING TISSUES FELLOW READERS)

[collapse]

Besides the few forced kisses, as mentioned by another reviewer there's one chapter that could be considered slightly dub-con, but it's missable and focuses more on their relationship:

Spoiler

chp 191: GYX's still not fully able to communicate but is recuperating at home with RY nursing him. Partially as encouragement to stimulate his brain, GYX's daily kiss blows up into RY riding him. It's revealed later that our ML, although unable to voice it out, was in his mind fully aware of and consenting to the s**, actively overstimulating RY afterwards~

[collapse]

The couple from Years of Intoxication cameo as consultant/target for one of the cases as well as indirectly spark off the MC and ML's FWB misunderstanding. Professional Substitute's couple are also namedropped at one point. <<less

characters:

mc: ren yi

ml: gong yingxian

... more>> summary:

MC is a firefighter and meets ML on a poor first impression (thinking MC is chasing after ml's underage cousin lol). ML is a police officer and they are brought together through their work as multiple instances of arson have popped up in the city. They discover a mysterious cult that uses arson as a form of worship, and its mastermind is a pyromaniac who claims to be the messenger of god and brainwashes cult members by telling them that the world is full of sin and only death by fire can cleanse those sins.

ML is drawn to these cases despite a severe adversion to fire. Both his parents and sister perised in a house fire and ever since then he has been traumatized by fire. But ML is convinced that there is a connection between his family's death and the cult, and so he takes part in the investigations and races against the clock to reopen his family's case before the statute of limitations is up.

thoughts:

despite all its shortcomings this novel was peak. A very good thriller thats pretty easy to read.

love the firefighting action scenes, love the mu*der mystery thriller, love the amount of research shuida put into this, and ofc love the cars lol

the rest of my thoughts in in spoiler tags because I nickpick on some story details

Spoiler

the wife chasing bits were short and left more to be desired. I wanted ren yi to give yingxian the cold shoulder for at least several weeks or months but perhaps thats a bit unrealistic because we were getting pretty close to the end of the novel by then so naturally everything got brushed over after a life and death moment where yingxian heroically almost sacrified his life to save ren yi's father. Its not a dealbreaker but I was hoping for a more drawn out misunderstands and angst for an 188 novel yknow

That One s*x Scene where ren yi rode a mute child-like gong yingxian in a middle of a full blown ptsd mindbreak was absolutely insane crazy out of this world absurd and shuida is the GOAT for that (i loved it) I know this sh*t wont fly with the puritians tho lmaoo

gong yingxian is a sweetheart I love everything about him. His little tantrums and ocd and the whole mask and gloves schack is so cute but I also loved his tenacity and his determination to clear his fathers name and bring his family closure. I was definitely reading the novel with rose tinted glasses because this man does no wrong in my books

ren yi is a pretty great character and I like characters that are open about their sexuality. Past their initial bumpy work relationship, he didnt hum and haw about his attraction towards gong yingxian at all. And he could tell that gong yingxian was attracted or at least curious towards him as well. Even though they were in a weird situationship for a while they were really affectionate and all kissy huggy towards each other it basically felt like they were dating.

downsides: I dont like how ren yi has a hero complex. I know it adds flaws and complexity otherwise this man would be Too Perfect but jesus there were wayyy too many instances of him disregarding his own safety for his job which is ironic because he's squad captain and he always nags his own teammates about their safety lol. Two mindbogling examples were when he charged into a car fire (that was about to explode mind you) without protective equipment just to save a couple of cats, and another time where he lied about how much oxygen he had so he could 'stay in the action' and not go and swap tanks. That incident preceeded an infamously bad moment of leadership that caused a teammate's death, which ill talk about later.

ren yi is one of those characters who fall for the idea that theyre meant to do great things always have a key flaw that is their immense ego getting in the way from making good judgement calls. Irl first responders always have a duty to make sure their own personal safety is number one else they only add to the injury count. I dont always hate self sacrificing characters but in the context of a firefighter disregarding fire safety rules I just find it really frustrating actually.

there was also that one scene were ren yi ran into a hotel rigged with bombs and with full body injuries that had me REELING. Like bro cant go a day without being s*upid. Best part was when its revealed that the whole thing was a police set up to lure bai yan out of his hiding spot and ren yi's hero complex deadass ruined their sting operation lmao

and remember how I said one of his terrible calls lead to a teammate's death? The story didn't address this at all which kinda pissed me off but the context was that ren yi insisted on saving a pair of son and father trapped in a gigantic mall fire with inadequate firefighting gear (he was running low on oxygen) and so obviously didn't have the proper means to bring either of them back to safety. In the middle of his heroic stunt he deadass tried to THROW the baby away from the fire because the building was collapsing. And botched it lol. His teammate then decided to sacrifice himself to save the baby (the father still died tho). There were a lot of things wrong in this chain of command but ren yi was undoubtedly at fault. Could he have avoided this by not being a hard ass? Maybe, maybe not. Worst thing is that was was absolutely no self reflection, no critical thinking, nothing was done afterwards. A firefighter died in action and everyone brushed it off and pulled the classic "im sure his family can understand his choice to save the baby" my ass loool

i really hope this isnt the authors personal beliefs because this perpetuates the idea that firefighters and other first responders, the modern day 'hero', are expected to die for their jobs. Absolute bullsh*t if you ask me.

other downsides: at the start of the novel there were a lot of firefighting action which is cool and all but too many is to many. Most was just some rehash of them running into burning buildings and saving people. Shuida did a lot of research and obviously wants to show it off but some of them were a hit of miss. Most werent relevant to the story. It gets better in the next half of the story because all the cases start to relate back to the cult.

on the upside, I learned a lot. Things like venting out sewage before maintenance work. Water on fire causing a lot of steam so firefighters are mindful to not steam victims to death. And how steam can buckle steel beams which compromises the integrity of the building, etc.

(but what was complete bullsh*t is how they dealt with that crush syndrome guy. Crush syndrome is rhabdomyolysis and you treat it with aggressive iv fluids NOT amputation lmaooo!! And even if the legs were necrotic you would only amputate in a sterile operating room not in the middle of a dusty ass warehouse omg)

the antagonistic forces were well portrayed but it only goes as far as how much of a defining role they played in the story. I like how they seemed powerful but not omnipotent, enough to add tension and thriller but not untouchable that MC and ML had to rely on some deus ex machina powerup to catch the bad guys. Bai yan was not perfect and his shortcomings were fully exploited by ML and his team, like how they zeroed on the fact that bai yan only goes after the people MC and ML currently investigate, how hes always reactive and never proactive, which means that 1. He doesnt actually know whos going to rat him out, 2. He doesnt know whos actually involved in gong yingxians family fire incident, 3. He only knows as much as the police knows, 4. Which means he is an insider possibly a police officer or firefighter as well. The clues were a nice touch because it doesnt exactly narrow it down by that much but it drives the direction in which they conduct their investigation.

(that time gongren were caught on livestream and had their faces full legal name addresses occupation doxxed was crazy like whew it gave me the sweats)

(loved the bit where ML became a runaway and had to live in the back of his car for weeks because he doesnt trust anyone in the police anymore and was lowkey acting all crazy trying to make bombs and guns out of household supplies)

ngl was lowkey disappointed that the big mastermind wasn't the chief of staff chen xiaofei because imagine the angst of having a beloved family friend kill mc's father and a decorated firefighting hero mass mu*der hundreds of innocent civilians wouldve been so peak. Shuida was kinda sneaky with this one because there were a lot pointing to baiyan's identity as a 'person with power and seniority who was present during the gong family fire and has vested interest covering up the plant explosion and has connections to the police and firefighting dept' and chen xiaofei fits the bill perfectly but alas it was only a red herring and the real mastermind is some no name side character that appeared in maybe five paragraphs total

if I gotta be really honest the whole cult thing was unrealistic. It might have worked in a fantasy or historical setting, but theres no way you can convince me that a bunch of modern 21st century people living in a tier 1 city would believe in some grassroots no-name no-establishment fire god pagan cultism. Even in real life, cults are usually offshoots of well established religion because cult leaders rely on influential schools of thought that have been around for long enough to permate the collective consciousness of many. But the in-story cult has none of that. Like you can't convince me that that some guy managed to brainwash hundreds of people into following a cult that has no history, no influence, no establishment, and no power, only vibes.

to shuida's defense, im inclined to believe that censorship is the reason why she wrote it like that. Its just that whenever one of them goes off saying sh*t like 'fire will cleanse our sins' I just laugh

This is probably the only book by this author that I’d confidently recommend to a friend. While there’s angst, there’s no tr*shy or scummy ML, no cheating, and no problematic gr*pe scenes. I really enjoyed how the romance developed, this is one of my favorite reads from the 188 series. It comes a close second to Beloved Enemy, though, simply because I have a soft spot for needy and jealous gongs. That said, the grovel in this book was short but it was satisfying. I know I'll be re-reading those... more>> chapters again. Proof that you can write a proper grovel without resorting to noncon or dubcon.

The beginning, however, was a bit of a slog for me. I tend to lose interest when there’s too much action. I’m convinced these characters live in Gotham City because fires, explosions, and bomb threats seem to happen weekly. The MC was hospitalized four times. Like, seriously, can they catch a break? 😂 <<less
