The Jiang and Song families have been friends for generations. Before Song Wan was born, she was betrothed to Jiang Xingjian. The two grew up together, and she was confined to the inner courtyard, learning everything to prepare to be a wife in the Jiang family. The young man, ambitious and high-spirited, left for the frontier to build his career before reaching adulthood. Before leaving, Jiang Xingjian personally put a white jade hairpin on her. With a promise to wait for him, Song Wan kept him in her heart, even if he died on the battlefield. She insisted on marrying into the Chengyang Marquis’s mansion, holding his memorial tablet.

She kept the young man in her heart and remained a widow for six years, only to see Jiang Xingjian return to the capital with his beloved. The young man’s beloved behaved strangely, and during the summer, she made ice and supported the Marquis’s mansion with firearms. Song Wan watched as he embraced the girl, showering her with endless affection. She also saw him personally take away the power of the household from her hands only to make the girl smile.

Wow, this was such a great read! Even though there were quite a few flaws and plot holes, the characters were all so vivid and well-written. Lin Jiayue's character development was especially amazing. She started off as the typical "brainless villain" stereotype, but in this story, she grew into a calm and selfless woman who dedicated her life to helping others. It was truly inspiring.

The most tragic characters for me were Jiang Yan and Wan Xiao. Jiang Yan loved the female lead so deeply and selflessly, while Wan Xiao gave... more>> up his own love for Jinshu. Their stories were heartbreaking.

Overall, I really enjoyed the novel. Both the male and female leads were incredible.

The biggest surprise for me was Song Lan’an, the female lead’s father. He turned out to be a much deeper character than expected, and we only truly understood his feelings for the female lead at the very end.

This novel is good. It’s not my favorite. But it’s surprisingly good.

The characters have layers. Some are quite likeable. And a select few are written with backstories or touching endings.

The story seems formulaic but the author manages to upend several aspects of it:

  • There is a transmigrator but it’s not the MC. And the supposed strengths of a transmigrator (modern thinking, modern methods) backfire several times and cause chaos/disaster. I find it such an interesting angle.
  • There is a harem, but the harem is (1) motley and (2) harmonious. First time I’ve seen one like this. Spoiler alert! Our OTP is loyal, so don’t get turned off by the mention of a harem.
  • There’s two or three typical villains but the rest are atypical. One in particular just has different priorities than the MC but is not bad at all.
There were some parts especially in the early chapters where I felt the author glossed things over (or maybe it was just a translation issue) and while the story is long, everyone is given proper closure in the end.

Also, the first 100 chapters are available for free in the translator’s page. You can choose to access the rest (101-280) via a paywall or just use MTL.

TL;DR: Author looks promising and I’ll be on the lookout for his/her other works.
