Foreboding clouds raced across the skies above the city.

Three years ago, as a consequence of Commander-in-Chief Jiang Ting’s error in judgement during an anti-drug operation in Gongzhou, a chain of explosions occurred at the scene and caused the Narcotics Division to suffer heavy casualties. Now three years later, Jiang Ting, whose flesh and bones should’ve faded from existence after dying at the line of duty, actually miraculously woke up from a vegetative state.

His heroic soul could not rest – he must return to the mortal world from the depths of hell and exert all that he has in order to bring the bloody and inconceivable truth to light.

A great mystery crime solving novel! It keeps you on edge and engrossed in the whole ride. If you a fan of crime novel, then it's a must read!! And while it's heavy, the comedy aspect keeps you entertained.

The main attraction is the MC, Jiang Ting. He is a very suspicious character from start to end. Very intriguing, you root for him, but also wary of him. His mystery is like an onion that get peeled layer by layer.

Special appreciation towards the woman in this story: the amazing almighty Madam... more>> Zeng Cuicui, the self-made rich lady Yang Mei, tough cookie intern Han Xiaomei, and the steady Chief Yu. I love you girls! <<less

Complicated but everything is actually all linked and related, which makes it even better. Honestly, I really like the MC and ML. They are both smart people and they both become a different self when they are together and I especially love seeing that.

Truthfully, this novel is kinda like a morally grey one. I had to stop and think whether it is right or wrong at many parts of the novel, especially near the end. In the end, there is no right or wrong. But, I have to say the... more>> romance is really good, although you need to expect some angst in the later half :") <<less

So far so good!

This Novel has a really great balance of mystery, action, humour and slow burn romance.

At first I was concerned about characters, because Jiang Ting wasn’t fleshed out right away and I thought I wouldn’t be able to care about him, but then I was pleasantly surprised, how bit by bit his backstory and motives are shown.

Both mains are great and so are side characters! I really loved the female police intern and her little development. I think Yan character is written pretty realistically, his thoughts make sense... more>> to his character and it makes very entertaining to watch him interact with Jiang.

So if you like mysery/action novels, with some hilarious humour and bl slowburn, I definately recomend! <<less

Definitely the best crime novel so far. The buildup, the suspense, the character as well as relationship development, it's all so well thought out. I've never felt this thrilled since the last time after I finished reading Silent Reading by Priest. I also read some BL novels after that but none of them caught my attention. To put it simply, Breaking Through the Clouds is currently on my top 3 most favorite danmei novels.

The plot is mainly related to drug trafficking and how it involved the MC, the handsome and... more>> almighty Captain Jiang (according to Yan Xie's description, probably). There are certain points I want to point out about this novel. Firstly, the positive things:

  1. Smart MC and ML. Although each of them is "clever" in different ways, they both complement each other. For example, the MC is someone who tends to look at a detailed image and always seeks for the hidden truth, whereas our ML tends to look at the bigger picture and how he can adapt quickly to any changes of situation. Their relationship is sometimes hilarious, but most of them time is bittersweet.
  2. The author's knowledge on certain things like substances/materials to produce drugs, how forensic doctors usually work on site, any information about case-investigating is worth-reading. I even wondered whether the author themselves is a police officer, a doctor forensic, or even has friends working in that path, to the point that they possess such rich knowledge. Also thanks for the translators who translated it nicely so that nobody would misunderstood the meaning of the texts.
  3. Several likable supporting characters with their antics and abilities. It Shows that not only the main characters are smart, but the other characters, even the villains really have brains.
  4. All the plot twists and dramatic scenes (I would be aging faster if I were one of the main characters)
All in all, worth your time if you want to read this. Warnings:

  1. Many graphic scenes with detailed descriptions that may feel uncomfortable. The violent level in this novel is probably a little too much.
  2. Spoiler

Too much betrayals, only people with strong heart can handle it.

Im on Ch. 91 but I'll give my review now because I've mostly gotten the feel of the book.

Pertaining to the cases, I honestly get lost at times because of how plot heavy and somewhat intricate t is but I'm still trying to keep up. I could very well see this being adapted into a cool mystery/police drama.

Like others have said, Yan Xie is truly the typical sexist male character who treats the shou like a delicate flower. He also makes disparaging comments about women and is constantly pushing himself onto Jiang Ting.

Even with Yan Xie's advances, Jiang Ting just stays there and takes it with almost no second thought into their sexualities or what Jiang Ting wants both in that moment and for a relationship overall. And Yang Mei, I'm on chapter 91, but the way she's been treated so far as unimportant is odd. She's the only one there for Jiang Ting as he gets out of his coma, the only person in his life, and literally lives with her as he learns to walk and stuff, but then here comes Yan Xie and the author almost completely diminishes her role in Jiang Ting's life. We hardly see Jiang Ting interact with her so far (or with anyone apart from YX really) and when we do it's usually briefly and in the presence of Yan Xie. Does she not have any kind of solid relationship with Jiang Ting? Why did Jiang Ting go straight to living with Yan Xie? I was confused at how quickly Yan Xie just starts making him stay with him and it's like Jiang Ting has almost no personality beyond just being smart so he doesn't object and just goes along with whatever Yan Xie wants.

I enjoy the moments where he says something assertively or snarkily towards Yan Xie because it reveals glimpses of something beyond being passive. Even as someone who woke up out of a 3-year coma, you'd think we'd get to see him properly adjust into living again simultaneously but nah. We only see him in the contexts of the cases or YX trying to play husband and wife.

SPOILER

Not sure if this is a spoiler but Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey is constantly playing subconsciously in the background in the early arcs. As someone who is obsessed with this song, I was super excited about how this would be interwoven into the plot. I liked the song but got obsessed after I watched The Great Gatsby so I was personally looking forward to how this song would come into play as the plot progresses, especially since the song lyrics was heavily scattered throughout the earlier arcs.... more>> But I was really disappointed when my expectations weren’t met. It seems the author just liked the song and wanted to put it in like a bg music? I suppose some words that the main antagonist said in the last arc could refer to the song but compared to how rampant the song lyrics was written in, during the earlier arcs, I was honestly expecting the song to be be more significant in the story. I kinda felt like the author forgot about it as the mystery got thicker. Anyway, this is just my personal opinion as someone who loves the song and was excited for the author to do something more but was left disappointed. If anyone thinks I missed anything, some hints, some implied meaning or some finer nuances that I missed regarding this point in the novel then I hope I can find your comment in the reviews or discussion forum. (I was today years old when I realised you can’t reply to reviews here.)

End of Spoiler

Plotwise, it was fun and gripping enough. The cases were beautifully linked together and the mystery keeps you excited and wondering about the reality behind the happenings and Jiang Ting’s personality. The gong might be a tad annoying trying to constantly keep the heteronormative agenda and certain comments about women. But I guess it’s also funny cause he’s kinda like a “ hysterical woman” at times. <<less

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Premise: Three years after the Captain of Crime Investigation Team, Jiang Ting, died in a failed operation against a large syndicate, Yan Xie, Vice Captain of the Crime Investigation Team, sees a man who seems oddly familiar. Caught in a web of lies and betrayal, Yan Xie forges ahead, seeking the truth of what happened three years ago.

Review: As an action, mystery, and crime-investigation novel, “Breaking Through the Clouds” is a clear 5/5. It had me at the edge of my seat itching to get to the revelations. It... more>> really did a good job of hooking the reader with scattered clues and hints all the while never really being clear on the circumstances of three years ago.

You can’t rest easy with what they’re revealing either, those clues could be outright lies or carefully manipulated truth.

That said, I would have docked it a star since the romance wasn’t well-developed. The initial romantic buildup was lacking in substance, it just wasn’t convincing enough. I do think the MC and ML could fit together, that wasn’t the problem, it was the execution of it that failed to deliver.

In the end, the reason why I only had 0.5 stars removed was because the romance did one aspect well.

Since they were on uncertain grounds with the MC being a police officer and the ML basically being a fugitive whose motives are unknown and has an undeniable connection with a large figure in the underworld, the MC and ML, though confirming that they had an attraction and affection for one another, were at a stalemate where they could trust the other with their lives but couldn’t trust that the other is not hiding something that would be detrimental to their respective plans.

I really liked that part and it was well-executed, so while the initial foundation for the relationship was lacking, that part of the romance had me interested. <<less

It is a great detective story. Definitely worth reading. Relationship is what it is, Jiang Tian, aware of his complicated past that would repulse many, is logically wary to engage especially with people who are in the "bright" world. I think it all fits together. The last few chapters may not have the same quality of writing as the rest of the book (too much action, almost like an American movie). However, all in all, I think the book is worth 4, 8 points

I came here after Swallowing the Sea. I have to say, I feel like this a little more lighthearted and I had a really great time reading. The cases are well done and I got to learn more about the characters I’ve already known from Swallowing the Sea.

ch148

“The flames in the distance were still on, and Qin Chuan’s face, which didn’t look like that of a living person because of excessive blood loss, was flushed red, and his eyes were shining brightly. At this moment, they stared at each other, and across the thorn bushes and rocks, both of their eyes reflected the youthful figure of each other.”

This part got me bawling my eyes out. I kept wondering why the review in Swallowing the Sea kept saying QC is their fav character and now I understand it. I feel like he’s one of the best morally grey characters out there. This paragraph shows just how much he misses his comrades and was willing to die to save them - even if know one knows or care about him in the end. I can feel the reluctance that he feels. He didn’t want to part with Yan Xie, the person who still call him brother even after he poisoned YX with his own hand. I wish things turned out a little bit differently for him. I wish he also find someone/something he loves. Someone give him a hug please.

Intriguing plot, interesting characters, and (mostly) cute love story.

As you can expect, the novel's main plot is not romance, nonetheless, it wasn't lacking, and it went very well with the crime-solving aspects. The characters were also endearing, even though we have the "tough" policeman and "cold" detective (to call it somehow), they aren't unidimensional or plain, and more importantly, things aren't what they seem.

An exciting novel where something is always going on, even if it's backstage, with many plot twists and heart-warming romance, so I recommend it if you're looking... more>> for a story like that!

I'm also surprised by how the author can include comedy without making light of the plot, I really liked that element. Yan Xue and Jiang Ting became one of my favorite couples.

Spoiler

The extras, especially the last one are just romantic comedies and that makes the long journey worth it. They're so cute and in love!

fascinating novel with a good mystery. It is long but fast-paced. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed every moment spent reading it.

The novel contains different cases, which the author connected with each other and to the whole plot very skillfully.

I would say that the story itself is sad; there are heartbreaking moments; there are also good plot twists and mysteries; the investigation process is fascinating; and the crimes are interesting. Sometimes, especially in the last chapters, situations get really tense and nerve-wracking; in some cases, it is really hard... more>> to guess what is happening, and the truth is concealed, which keeps readers in tension and suspense. But at the same time, there are many funny situations too. Some parts of this novel made me laugh really hard. The novel is well balanced and enjoyable to read.

Characters are well-written, they are interesting, and their interactions are fascinating. I especially liked MC and ML. I adore couples who trust and love each other unconditionally. MC is strong, clever, and calm. He is independent and never panics, even in the worst situations. I loved that because he trusted ML, he began to show him his vulnerable side. ML is savage, aggressive, and often acts like a peacock, but at the same time, he is determined, smart, and brave. It was funny how indulgent and helpless MC became towards ML. In all fairness, I think ML is gentle only towards MC. So both of them have double standards.

The novel contains many small details, which make the story more heartfelt. Interactions between characters, brotherhood, and cameradice make the whole story warm despite hideous crimes.

The style of storytelling is good too; the author sometimes deliberately conceals the truth from the readers and leaves us hanging, which arouses interest. There might be some small mistakes, but in general, this work is wonderful. This is one of those kinds of stories that makes you miss the characters. Please read it; you will definitely enjoy it, especially if you like this genre. <<less

Phew! That was a long ride.

The mystery was written good. The action too but the action results weren't realistic enough, because there were many moments were the protagonists and the antagonists could have killed each other but it usually end up being delayed and having someone else save them. Hesitant for killing someone you want badly dead?😅

They also have protagonist halo cause they survived what may have not being survivable irl but hey, this is fiction.

Spoiler

The romance is okay too. Although I was sad for YX with JT's untruthfulness. I also felt that he didn't express enough love for YX, although he did and he'd die for him. My romantic fluffy heart wasn't fully satisfied in that aspect with him being expressionless most of the time. Even their s*xual times...

[collapse]

To me, it was a long and interesting ride but sometimes draggy. There's chemistry between the lovers but 70% of the book focuses on crime and crime solving, while the remaining on their romance. I wish there were more extra on their romantic daily life anyways. The side characters were also interesting.

I saw some people shipping or liking the villian but I didn't see him in that light. He was cruel and made the MC life miserable. Qin Chuan was also one interesting character.

Spoiler

And contrary to most people, I didn't mind the whole wifey dynamic, lol. Although it may have been taken to extreme sometimes. If you hate that troupe, you'll find it hard to like this novel cause it was present most of the time.

Any novel where the MC and ML have to work together and slowly build up a relationship is a 10/10 in my heart (I definitely enjoyed this novel the most when they were solving cases and Yan Xie was starting to flirt)

Writing crime novels is always hard since its difficult to cover every loop hole and plot point and also maybe due to reading an edited mtl, I was a bit skeptical at times of where the plot was going but still I'm glad it all tied up in... more>> the end and we got a happy ending. <<less

This book is extremely well-written!!! Solid plot, great characters and amazing relationship dynamics!! It brought me an enjoyable rollercoaster ride of laughter, amusement and tears. I highly highly recommend it!!! This genre isn't one that I normally read, but I'm glad to have given this book a chance.

The entire story's premise is on how Jiang Ting seeks revenge for his comrades, as well as unravelling the mystery of that particular incident. You can see the meticulous research the writer had done while crafting the plot, the amount of details inside... more>> is stunning and made the entire story immersive. There are so many plot twists, and I had to use my brain to keep up with the main character's scheming. The description of the action scenes is also top-notch, it's really intense and supercharged. I was literally this close to screaming out loud. I'll recommend reading this story without any spoilers :)

The romance is really really darn good!!! The ML's shameless flirting skill is legitimately top-notch and made me laugh out loud many times. And no matter how hard things get, he always always persist in reaching out to the MC and I think that that is really beautiful. The times when the reticent MC opens up can be counted on one hand -understandable from his experiences- but it's always a marvel to read those scenes. The ML and MC's relationship is chef's kiss!!
Spoiler

My favourite part of the novel definitely has to be the last arc. The MC and ML were basically screaming at each other to get to safety, you can definitely see their love for each other woven beautifully into the story. The last fight scene is superb and poetic too!! We get to enjoy scenes like:

"Jiang Ting raised the muzzle of the gun, and at that moment, countless brave souls reached out their hands from the void and pulled the trigger together with him-

Bang!"

and

"Even in sickness and old age, I still have you, to scour the thousands of mountains and rivers and to break through the boundary of life and death.

Before we reunite, thank you for bringing me back to this world."
