3 stars for right now. 2 stars if the translation wasn't done by Arcane.

I initially went into this story expecting another one of those "hero party mistreats the protagonist" ones. Usually a bit tr*shy yet still satisfying to see the protagonist leave them behind. Instead I got a protagonist that can only be described as scum, bottom of the barrel filth that shouldn't be seen as a good person by anyone. He's an archmage that's been traveling with the heroes party for 2 years only to betray them at the... more>> last second because he doesn't like how the girls have all fallen for the hero. The hero did not manipulate them, or use some special skill to entice them, all of the girls fell organically for him and our protagonist is being a little whiny sh*t about it who condemns the human race as a result, attacking the hero and heroes party, binding them and handing them over as prisoners. Utterly tr*sh, especially considering he wasn't much different, visiting effectively every brothel he could throughout his journey while making bullsh*t excuses about absolutely needing them. Villain protagonist are fine, but they should have an actual compelling reason for being a villain, otherwise they just turn into complete garbage of a character that isn't compelling or fun to read about in the slightest.

He's also just an outright Gary Stu power-wise. He didn't work for anything; as a mage, he "dislikes reading" and seems to have primarily used intuition and transmigration knowledge to become one of the 7 strongest mages on the content, because f*ck it, hard work isn't necessary I guess.

I find the Demon Lord or even Hero in this situation more interesting than our protagonist. The Demon Lord at least seems like a person working for their nation, even if they aren't solely good, while following the hero after the mages betrayal could've at least been an interesting plot where he overcomes adversity through hard work. Either of those would've been better than this, yet unfortunately those aren't what we got. <<less

First, a simple explanation for why I rated this 5 stars: It delivers exactly what it promises and doesn't fumble.

Now, you may or may not have read the rating before me. I did too, and came into the novel with that knowledge in mind. And here's what I found:

Spoiler

No, MC is NOT evil. In fact, you can say he is the fairest person in that world. While humans and demons are at odd with each other, thinking only about their own, MC actually doesn't care whether he would belong to demon or human, as long as his livelihood is to his liking. How can you call that 'evil', when it's EXACTLY what we are doing? The Hero party looks at him with disgust, the other humans consider him an extra, and his future as a human is only empty title to cover for a bleak lifestyle with no true love. How do you even expect him to sacrifice for humanity with all that?

[collapse]

All in all, it should be a good read if you think fairly and rationally. <<less
