“What do you think you’re doing to my daughter? Huh?”

Wolfgang, the eldest son of the Lehman ducal family, realized as a child that he had been reincarnated as the father of the villainess from the otome game Fantasia: The Ballad of the Azure Maiden.

Due to certain circumstances, Wolfgang was unable to use magic properly. This led his parents to abandon the idea of him inheriting the duchy. Instead, they decided he would manage the Count of Zonta territory, which was under the administration of the Lehman Duchy.

However, fate took a turn when his parents died in an accident, leaving behind his younger brother, the heir to the duchy, who was still a child. With no other choice, Wolfgang stepped in as the acting duke until his brother could graduate from the academy and officially come of age.

Following the game’s storyline, Wolfgang married his beloved wife and had a daughter, Louise. Tragically, his wife succumbed to a devastating illness. According to the game, Louise was supposed to grow into a tantrum-throwing, selfish “duke’s daughter.”

But Wolfgang’s personality was entirely different from the in-game version of himself. Because of his unique approach to parenting, Louise’s upbringing veered away from her predetermined fate.

To complicate matters further, events that never occurred in the game began to unfold, revealing that this world wasn’t a perfect replica of the game. Wolfgang assumed that, as a count’s daughter, Louise wouldn’t be engaged to the crown prince like in the game’s storyline.

Unfortunately, Wolfgang’s good intentions backfired, and Louise ended up betrothed to the crown prince anyway. While Louise had grown into a kind and thoughtful young woman, vastly different from the villainess of the game, the crown prince remained exactly the same. At this rate, if the game’s heroine appeared, Wolfgang feared his beloved daughter might still be falsely accused and humiliated.

“Alright. Time to come up with a countermeasure.”

This is the story of a devoted father’s struggle to protect his daughter, who was destined to become a villainess, and the unexpected beginning of a new romance.

Status: Completed
I read the raw of this novel and have been following it since it's still ongoing, and now the raw has just been completed ∼5 hours before I'm writing this review. The author planned to publish several side stories after the main story's completion, but I'll mark this as completed.

One comment about this novel: I'm very satisfied with how the author handled their story from the beginning until the wrap-up at the end, especially considering the main premise is "a reincarnated father changing the way of his daughter so she... more>> won't turn into a villainess, " which is an already common subtrope of otome game reincarnation stories. The author succeeds in showing MC's fatherly love without making it the disgusting, sickening daughter-con commonly seen in JP stories with a doting father.

The original game's setting is your typical otome game setting: an aristocratic magic school with a saint as the heroine falling in love with love interests coming from high-ranking noble families + defeating monsters in dungeons. But rejoice! The author doesn't dwell much on the "game" part—and that's one good thing I like about this novel. We will mainly see MC doing his jobs and fulfilling his duties as a noble and living his own life without being weighed down much by the game's "supposed course of events, " so even after we reach the "main stage of the game" aka the academy, years later after the start of the story, we will only hear the events happening there from the recounts of his daughter and other sources, not that we will see MC personally taking part in and resolving them himself. He only deals with the political (or adult business) matters that crop up in line with the events at the academy.

One other thing worth noting is the world setting. The kingdom MC lives in has the system of Saint and Saintess (or Holy One and Saint, respectively, following the terms the TL used), so the saint position applies to both genders, and MC is one. How many JP BG stories have a male protagonist as the saint? We also won't find corrupt churches here, as the presence of gods is very much real and not just some abstract concept. The gods can literally show themselves before people and deliver divine punishment in person.

A bit about the game world: it's a series consisting of 3 parts, each taking place around a century before the next part, and MC lives in the world of the 3rd part of the game series, of which his daughter is the villainess. That's why he can tell that the world's history progresses differently from that of the game series since there are genuine historical records of the past "parts, " and this realization helps him make decisions to do things without caring about the game, especially since MC has realized that he lives in the game world since childhood. Well, he does make conscious efforts to make sure his life with his daughter won't progress the same way as in the game though, and due to a certain trigger, he still feels the unease of the imminent game plot later on.

Now, about the tags. To those wondering about the other reincarnated person after seeing the "Multiple Reincarnated Individuals, " it's not the game's heroine.
Spoiler

Both the game's heroine and villainess (aka MC's daughter) are genuine residents of this world. The other reincarnator is another figure, and I won't mention it here; read it yourself to find out if you're that curious :P

[collapse]
MC will have a new wife several years after the death of his first wife, and we'll see MC caring so much about her and holding her dear after marriage, but the romance part is actually pretty minimal for it to count as a romance story, so I removed the "Romance" genre from the list and added the "Romantic Subplot" tag instead. MC's second wife is 12 years younger than him, but obviously they're married after she has her debutante and is fully of age (for that world's standard), so just a heads up in case you are absolutely uncomfortable with any sort of age-gap relationship. MC is also very unaware of his looks; he is touted as the most handsome gentleman in the whole kingdom to the point practically single women of all ages (except children, of course) eye him once they catch news that he's about to remarry, but he's always skeptical about it since his beauty standard is that of manly, musclular type typical of military men, so he always regards his manly lil bro more handsome. He also thinks his magic is just so-so, nothing special, so he never understands why people always look forward to his saintly duties. Well, there is indeed a cause that leads him to have inferior opinions about himself, so at least his "unreliable narrator" self doesn't come out of nowhere.

The last third of the story is a bit angsty, and since I was reading this as the raw was being updated, I couldn't help being on the edge of my seat for quite a number of chapters (which is equal to months while waiting for new chapters) since I would always have this thought as I read: Hey, Author, are you really going to make MC [CENSORED]? Yep, it will turn into a certain kind of angst, the "mild" one actually, but angst is still angsty nonetheless, so prepare yourself. Not a tragedy, that I can assure you.

This novel is certainly not a masterpiece, some parts are still lacking (e.g., the "villain monologue while others watching" trope), but it's among the top 5 of my JP reads of this year and is still very much an enjoyable, worthwhile read, so please do give this novel a try. <<less
