Buddha-like Rebirth

Only after dying did Fu Zhiyu realise that the world he lived in turned out to be a novel.

No wonder he devoted all his life to loving Xie Ke but Xie Ke didn’t even like him. After all, the protagonist’s journey was to the sea of stars, while he was an indigenous cannon fodder who bit the dust halfway, just blindly delaying the protagonist’s career path.

Fu Zhiyu, who woke up: What is love? What is power? The world in the novel is all fake, I don’t know what they are fighting for there (disillusioned_and_opting_out_of_the_rat_race.jpg)

He deeply reflected and regretted his previous life that was really baffling. After being reborn, he immediately decided to let go and become Buddha-like calm, not bothering with anything and living his life as a happy cannon fodder, the farther away from Xie Ke and the main plot, the better. But he didn’t expect that he was not the only one who had changed in this life.

…It seems the protagonist became strange too.

Fu Zhiyu: General Xie, please follow the script. Now let go of me, I’m tired and want to go back and lie down.

Xie Ke [gentle smile]: I will accompany you.

Fu Zhiyu: …?

This novel came with a relatively novel idea in the rebirth genre. It was fairly interesting at first and the writing itself (or rather the translation) was pretty good.

Unfortunately, the story did not turn out to be that engaging further on. It's very dragged out. The relationship of MC and ML is (presumably) the main plot of this novel. Yet the ML barely ever shows up and there is not really any progress until the very end. Instead, a lot of the text is focused on subplots that were very... more>> much unnecessary to describe in detail. Some of them would not hurt the story at all if they were thrown out completely, other things could have been much simplified. Only a fraction of the entire novel is actually spent on the major plotline! I think this novel would have been much better in a heavily compressed version.

The final explanation of the world and the MC's role in it seemed a bit convoluted and honestly quite unsatisfying. It is a happy ending, but after the looong dragged out story it just falls flat. <<less

PS:: I hope everyone give author chance and continue to read, because it is really not what you think. You will get satisfactory final you want. I saw many comment that very unhappily give up after couple of chapters because they think they feel like never get deserved explanation and final but it is not. Trust me auther and translator. Our s*um gong will get punishment more than he deserve... (or is it really...) Anyway story is perfect and I want more special or spin off.

Its been very long time that I read this much good wife chasing crematorium novel. Author planned perfectly everything. Characters emotional developments are perfect. There is nothing that I can judge. Its so enjoyable, satisfying read. I am really so grateful our translator Yunyun for this perfect choice and perfect translation. Its really hardwork and any words that I know describe how much I feel thankful for them. I hope every wish you want, will happen perfect wayly. <<less

I ended up dropping this because I skipped ahead to around chapter 90+, and I didn't like the direction the story took. I went into this fully aware that this is a crematorium novel, with the ML having seriously wronged the MC and the ML needing to suffer the seven trials of hell and change for the better before they could end up back together. Instead, I feel like it's more a huge miscommunication issue and the interference of outside forces that completely ruined their relationship in their first life,... more>> although I still don't deny that the ML has done disgusting things to the MC and made the wrong decisions again and again, and needed to repent for it.

In the end, I felt like the MC just ended up too indifferent and them getting back together feels perfunctory rather than something that happens naturally.

Spoiler

The MC fell out of love a long time ago, and he falling in love again with the ML in another life/world just doesn't feel the same, because the ML had already lost his memories. It's clear that the MC also still holds some resentment, which is understandable, and it took until the last chapter to feel like they're finally on the same page. In a way, their relationship is quite realistic, having undergone many trials and still persevering, but their reconciliation just doesn't feel as sweet and cathartic as I hoped it would be. Other reviewers have mentioned this, but with the MC being so apathetic, it all just feels pointless. The punishment arc was just dragged out way too long.

[collapse]

I started this story tearing up for the MC in the first chapter, and ended this disliking the MC and feeling pitiful for the ML. Honestly, their relationship would never feel balanced for me. They're not really compatible at all. <<less

2 stars for a good translation, but no stars for being a good book to me.

Got to chapter 51 then read some spoilers because I was grossed out by the ML and his obsessive and creepy behavior.

Spoiler

Like for real, kissing and touching some against their will and/or while they're sick/sleeping AFTER you're trying to redeem yourself for how horrible you were to them before (r*ping them then killing them the next day after using them, ruining their life, imprisioning them, and never returning their love) is wild and to me an indicator that you're the same kind of s*um even with a 2nd chance.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Manipulating the people around him, so you can control his life? Wishing he didn't remember the horrific things you did to him, so he wouldn't reject you? Actively going against his wishes and spying on him? Not letting him make decisions for himself because they don't include you? Trying to gain sympathy and make him feel bad for you? ML didn't want to be redeemed for forgiveness and love, he just wanted to possess and control the MC regardless of what the MC felt.

[collapse]

Neither apathy (mc) or obsession (ml) for someone are an opportunity for love, so I didn't see any romance in this.

In my opinion ML was too obsessive to care about the MC or respect him and his opinion of wanting to be left alone. No amount of explaining his side or any of the suffering he faced made up for his behavior. After reading half the book, I didn't see any chemistry between the characters, just the poor MC who wanted to escape and the psychopath ML who was trying to force an unwanted relationship on an unwilling person.

I kept wishing the ML would finally take rejection, and leave the MC alone, and that the MC would find someone who loved and respected him to be with. <<less

All other comments has already expressed what I felt for the novel. This is only to give my personal rating for the novel in the form of star.

This really fits my taste for novels. Just the right amount of angst and gave the closure that would not give you entanglements after the ending. (Its common for me to have nightmares because of the novels I read, especially those novels that until now I cant recover from and still gave me heartaches)

Seriously, after reading too many novels, didn't expect that... more>> I could still have something added among my favorites which I would reread in time undoubtedly. <<less

I'm so disappointed and sad lol. It started really well. But got dragged over the third half, the politics was interesting from the beginning but I was getting bored of it towards the end. I stayed for the reconciliation and ROMANCE.

BUT THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE.

I love that the MC didn't forgive the ML easily. I understood his pain and how he felt. Adamant, I liked it. However, as time went on, with all the misunderstandings cleared but the MC still unmoved, it was getting excessive. I was feeling bad... more>> for the ML.

The years of being unmoved and not returning the feelings were pitiful and too strong of hatred. It all started with a misunderstanding and it wasn't really the ML's fault. If the MC didn't love the ML anymore, that's okay but the author didn't need to give hope of any reconciliation.

Spoiler

Even the whole mutant explanation didn't hold water, it wasn't enough for the MC to 'realise' he still loved the ML whatever. I didn't feel the author's excuse at all. Even the alternative world where they later met wasn't enough to fill what was missing. Even when they came back together at the end, it wasn't enough to fill the gap of 'romance.'

[collapse]
Less than a hundred pages out of 600+ were dedicated to this renewed love or reconsideration or whatever it was.

I still don't think the MC loves the ML. He's gotten over him and numb to the other, and it's fine. It should have ended that way, it'll be acceptable as a tragedy.

I feel bad for the ML's obsession. He had the most character growth but it didn't yield anything. The MC was a Garystu character, with no flaws. At one point, the ML was like a supportive character. Even some supportive characters got more screen time than him.

The ML deserves better. There are alot of scummy ML'S and he's not even that scummy, he was just pitiful and in love. He sacrificed alot, yet, he didn't receive anything good. If noticed, the latter chapters without the ML was boring. The ML is the main character. The MC was boring, he wasn't well written because a character can be laid back and nonchalant without being boring. He was apathetic.

I know people loved how the MC was adamant but I still think there is supposed to be a limit to inflicting pain on the other if there's love. The ML was in pain throughout. The feelings weren't balanced. It's sad, I don't consider this as a romance nor an HE. Avoid this if you're looking for a romance.

The translation is excellent though 👌 <<less

BEWARE of SPOILER

The universe was a webnovel written in the span of three years and published in 2014. The novel tells the story of Xie Ke, a concubine son, and his journey to be the Emperor. One of the cannon fodder in the novel was Fu Zhiyu, a ruthless prince who slaughtered his way to be the Emperor. In the novel, Fu Zhiyu meets his ultimate demise at the hands of Xie Ke.

However, the novel universe materialized and the plot derailed, caused by some bug that may pose a problem.... more>> And so, the Lord God decided to send an actor to play Xie Ke and brought the plot back to the original. Xie Ke was told another actor would also be brought into the universe. And so, when he saved Fu Zhiyu at the lake instead of the original female lead, he assumed the actor was Fu Zhiyu. He fell in love with Fu Zhiyu and told himself once the plot ended, they could be together. And so, he strived hard to bring the plot back to the original. And in the original, Fu Zhiyu must die.

After Fu Zhiyu died, only then Xie Ke knew he wasn't the actor. He was the bug. Under Xie Ke's hand, the universe reversed and became a free universe, meaning even as an actor, he wouldn't be OOC. Xie Ke came with the impression that the universe restarted not knowing that Fu Zhiyu was reborn. And so, the wife-chasing crematorium kick-off.

Knowing all of this, I knew I couldn't hate Xie Ke. He's not a s*um ML. He's just stuck between a rock and a hard place. <<less

I'm surprised by how many reviews say ML (Xie Ke) wasn't a jerk.

By his first reaction I guessed there was some misunderstanding between them as he said and was looking forward to them clearing it. But the way he treated MC was still sh*tty.

Spoiler

His point of view was always the one of an outsider, a superior being to this 'fake world'. Didn't really consider mc's feelings, didn't bother to explain because "MC wouldn't understand anyway".

He made MC suffer so much in the first life, yet he wasn't willing to be more patient and gentle because "it was unbearable and he missed him so much". And he was still saying that he was sorry.

[collapse]

It's a well written novel though, no plot holes so far. The translation is smooth as well. Unfortunately, the ML makes me too uncomfortable and I can't keep reading. <<less

Honestly, the characters just don't act their age at all, which is infuriating.

The whole story feels really dull, like nothing is happening to keep my interest. I can't connect with either of the main characters; in fact, I really can't stand the male lead. Everything he does just makes me uncomfortable, and I really don't care what excuses he has for his despicable behavior.

There's also no chemistry between the main characters. I don't think this novel should be categorized as a romance at all.

Dropped.

Complete (100% read), Highly recommended! This novel was not at ALL what I was expecting in a really interesting way! While on its face, this looks like your standard rebirth novel, the way the author chooses to write the ways protag and ML are affected by their (many) lives is EXCELLENT. This story really explores some of the harder parts of what it means to actually change as a person and what true redemption/reconciliation looks like. I very much appreciate breadth of the novel and while its only 102 chapters,... more>> the author truly uses each of them to tell a really complex story!

I had high hopes going into this one, but after reading up to chapter 68 and skimming through the rest, I just couldn't push through. It turned out to be a good thing I didn't, because I would have seriously regretted wasting my time had I finished it.

I knew what I was getting into. This is a crematorium story after all. But honestly, the way the author dragged out the ML's chase for the MC's affection was just too much. 95 chapters of this drama? No thanks.

One of the biggest... more>> issues was the MC's complete lack of energy and emotional depth. It's tough to get invested in a character who's just so indifferent and, frankly, kind of ruthless toward ML for most of the story. By the time the MC finally started to consider ML again, I was just too exhausted by all of it. And when the MC did come around, it felt like a really shallow resolution.

It's one thing for a main character to be laid-back or apathetic, but this was on a whole other level. I just couldn't connect with the MC, which made the whole story feel like a chore. And then, the ending was a mess of info dumps and a quick, forced reconciliation because the story had to wrap up somehow.

The story would've been a lot better with a more balanced approach. Maybe if ML's struggles led to a more natural and real growth in their relationship. Instead, it just ended up telling us what was happening rather than showing it, making the ending feel rushed and kind of slapped together.

Even though I didn't enjoy the story that much, I want to give a shoutout to the translator. The translation was great and really well done. My review might be on the negative side, but the translation effort deserves some recognition. <<less

Wow. I was lucky that I was in a mood to slowly read this story and not rush through it like I usually did. I really enjoyed this novel.

For the most part, I like how the story was paced. It was not heavily focused on the romance, instead it focused more on developing the MC. For his first life, he had to suffer through a lot of grievances so it makes sense why it took him another lifetime to get over it too.

Although there are moments where my impatience almost... more>> took over, I do understand why he had a lot of emotional baggage that he had to process before he was able to start considering letting the ML into his life.

In the end, I'm happy that they both matured and managed to have a happy ending. <<less

It’s a fine story. The translator did a great job!

When the author said it was a Buddha Like Rebirth, they meant it. You can barely feel emotions in most of the chapters. In the beginning it’s a bit novel. But later on MC and ML’s push and pull gets a bit too much. Tho not too much that you have to drop the story. It’s a fine one time read.

MC says he wants to do right by his loved ones. He does but his emotions are so zen that you... more>> barely feel it because he doesn’t feel it either. Like he’s seeing his family again. It should be at least a bit emotional scene but you don’t get to soak in it. I don’t mind this as much. Because it’s clearly the consequence of what XK’s betrayal had done to his mindset.

What is the main reason behind my three star rating is the final few chapters. If there is something I hate almost as much as love triangles then it is ahkchually type of info dump in the last part of the story. World consciousness bit was annoying. It ruined everything for me. I don’t mind info dumps it the beginning of the story but this type of mega reveal at this juncture just feels like some original character meddling in the story of your beloved’s. Who are you? Why are you here? Just go away! That kind of feeling.

I also felt that the fluff was too little. There were exactly two chapters of something that resembled the fluff. I saw more of this world consciousness guy than main pair’s fluff.

Lastly, I was told the emperor had a fitting ending. But it was very generic. I was hoping for him to get his just desserts. He went out with a whimper. It was not satisfying. <<less

Usually hate dog-blooded novels and crematoriums and misunderstandings, but this one was done very well. I did have to skip a bit because I can't stand this level of drama, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. One of the few novels I felt that the leads really didn't do anything wrong- they just had really bad fate. Everything that happened post-first life was... well, understandable and deserved, though I did feel a little pity for ML at times. Kept with the story because the character settings, actions, and depth were very... more>> in place.

Some people may think that the ML is scum, but so long as you think about it, he the only thing he super super messed up on (he had other mistakes that he grows from) is the standard chickens talking to duck: think he's communicating but there's two convos happening.

Don't expect a lot of fluff- there's a lot of growth for the both of them, but the ending is cute.

Last note- shout out to the translator! Amazing job. Have read some of the translations before having a NU account but now that I have one, thank you for such an amazing job! <<less

This is like, the anti-thesis of a SQC 188 line novel. When the MC wanted the ML to leave him alone, he meant it. Which I really didn't expect. Objectively, the MC's perspective and new path made great world-building and plot progression.

But low key, I picked this up thinking I could get an angsty (continuous) romance. Who knew that the ML was gonna pretty much disappear for 25+ ish chapters and x amount of years?

So, I’m back from reading this novel and while I don’t think it was amazing, it was definitely better than I’ve seen others give credit for.

If I’m being honest, I’ve never particularly liked the whole chasing wife crematorium thing because no matter how you slice it, it’s always either a misunderstanding or a case of now that you’re gone I suddenly miss you a little and both of which are my biggest enemies in storytelling.

misunderstandings are usually easily solved by a simple conversation so I hate that they get dragged... more>> out chapter after chapter as for the second enemy, I hate it even more when someone is treated badly and then the bully twists their reasoning for the treatment into some weird f*cked up form of love.

I have read at least 2 or 3 novels that fit in either one of those categories and hated them thoroughly.

I’ve said that to say, that while I did hate this misunderstanding, it was far more detailed and depth to it than a simple sense of miscommunication and confusion. Even if he was to communicate, the ML couldn’t so the twists and turns were necessary and very interesting.

That being said, while I didn’t hate this story, I also don’t think they should have ended up together. I feel like it would have ended nicely if they just became friends instead where they could smile and nod in passing without regret, resentment and insecurity breathing in every interaction.

Even in the end, the ML was insecure because of the past and I feel like the way they got together was skimmed over and then randomly put together. And it didn’t really solve anything because ML had no memory and didn’t really make up for anything. MC hated when the ML did things without asking but was suddenly fine when it was his life he gave away without asking. It felt inconsistent because they didn’t even have a conversation about that.

anyway it was still interesting even if it was just basically the life of a salted fish.3.5 high end. <<less
