Buddha-like Rebirth

Only after dying did Fu Zhiyu realise that the world he lived in turned out to be a novel.

No wonder he devoted all his life to loving Xie Ke but Xie Ke didn’t even like him. After all, the protagonist’s journey was to the sea of stars, while he was an indigenous cannon fodder who bit the dust halfway, just blindly delaying the protagonist’s career path.

Fu Zhiyu, who woke up: What is love? What is power? The world in the novel is all fake, I don’t know what they are fighting for there (disillusioned_and_opting_out_of_the_rat_race.jpg)

He deeply reflected and regretted his previous life that was really baffling. After being reborn, he immediately decided to let go and become Buddha-like calm, not bothering with anything and living his life as a happy cannon fodder, the farther away from Xie Ke and the main plot, the better. But he didn’t expect that he was not the only one who had changed in this life.

…It seems the protagonist became strange too.

Fu Zhiyu: General Xie, please follow the script. Now let go of me, I’m tired and want to go back and lie down.

Xie Ke [gentle smile]: I will accompany you.

Fu Zhiyu: …?

Crematorium style story. The start is pretty good and tear-jerking, what I don't like is

Spoiler

It is not a happy ending in their original world after rebirth. They had to meet again in a different world and system space to get their happy end.

[collapse]

It was a bit anti climatic. The side character's that they built up, endings are also not all known.

At least the main couple is cute. Worth a first read but maybe not a 2nd.

I'm not a fan of Crematorium novels. I try to give it a chance from time to time, but no matter how many I've tried, the author, the ML and MC all make me feel so many negative emotions that I'm forced to drop reading every time. Usually I drop it when I start to really want to punch the author in the face and thoroughly beat up ML. Maybe slap MC once or twice too.

THIS WAS EXCEPTION.

It was very well and cleverly written, I was actually impressed with author.... more>> So, no desire to punch the author, CHECK✅️

ML's redemption really takes it time, but throughout 80 chaps he has TREMENDOUS character development arc. It was the only time that crematorium's MC had fully satisfying arc. At mid point of the story he reveals his redeeming explanation, reason behind MC's suffering, AND IT'S ACTUALLY A VALID EXPLANATION! Yes, it's not just regular "I didn't know how much I loved you untill I lost you 💔😢 " and it wasn't even "ML has tragic past and mommy issues, that's why he's a piece of shit"

At the start, he is meant to be disliked by readers. But as story progresses, he slowly (very slowly) gets redeemed in eyes of the audience. He is, surprisingly, actually likeble and his inner growth doesn't feel forced like a lot of times with ML's of this genre. His progression is believable. Author managed to fully convince me to like him and sympathize with him.

So, no beating up ML from me, CHECK✅️

Finally, MC. I love him. I truly love him and his views and his progression and his personality and his methods, I love it all.

I actually want to write so much, but I ran out of energy, but just know that at no point have I experienced desire to smack him for his thoughts or decisions. I completely trusted him to not be s*upid. He was so reasonable and so easy for me to understand and empathize. CHECK✅️ <<less

Not trying to rain on everyone else's parade, but I have a few thoughts.

Despite this being a good novel and chasing arc crematorium for others, I really find it hard to continue, already having a rooted distaste for the ML. Doesn't matter how he changes for the better and how he tries to do his best to correct his mistakes and repent.

I think the main reason why this novel has lower ratings as compared to others although being touted as 'good' is people find ML despicable like me from a... more>> simple paragraph in the earlier chapters. It's the fact that he basically 'slept' with MC in a non-consensual way and no matter the reasoning, if MC was drugged or whatever, the MC didn't consent to it. For me, it was like ML stripped MC of everything, even his dignity and I find it so low.

Sure, it can be reasoned that ML thought MC himself as an actor, but what was the reasoning behind sleeping with MC when he was clearly suffering?

Anyway, I proceeded to read a few more chapters, thinking I could bear with it but my thoughts always drift off to that and it just doesn't sit right with me. I tried to think it through and conclude that no matter ML's transformation as the story progressed, I would never like him. Its distateful and I couldn't get rid of this dislike so I'm planning on holding this off and read some slice of life just to rid me off this distateful feeling of disgust. <<less

I think this isn't your typical rebirth story. I like how the story focused more on MC's self healing and journey to reaching fulfillment in life.

The ML's possessiveness is understandable (not inexcusable). I like how firm MC is with his life decisions after rebirth.

I wish there are extras about the couple. But I genuinely enjoyed how they got together at the end. MC took his time to understand his feelings, ML was trying to be better til the very end.

I know others find the ML a "red flag" but I'm... more>> reading the story for its interesting characters, not looking for someone to date. It's not the usual wife chasing genre. If you're mature enough to understand that a great character doesn't have to be perfect, you'll definitely enjoy this novel.

I'm just sad that the ratings are not that high even though the story is amazing and the translation is superb. It's rare to find good translation these days so you're in for a treat. <<less

Not really a review (🫠)

But it wasn't what I expected at all. It was soooo good to read. I'm really happy I give it a try!

If you're expecting a lots of angst and suffering scenes... There's not much as the other novels of this genre, really. But each one of them is full of heartache. The author did a really good job balancing the protagonism of the MC, the role of ML and the other background characters. The world building was also very satisfactory to read! I love the... more>> "kingdom making" part 🥰

The suffering of the MC, his PTSD, his coping mechanism... Although not explicit, was well written and felt so much sympathy for him. I was sometime so upset with ML, that I wanted him gone forever. But when the truth came out and his redemption attempt started... I felt so sad, so devastated. It was heartbreaking.

I really liked how the author wrote the perfect rhythm for the relationship between MC and ML to repair. It gave them time to understand what happened, their mistakes, and process feelings of guilt and love.

But to be honest, I was expecting more sugar, I mean, more detailed sugar and fluffy. I could feel their love, that's for sure. However it was so short, I'm craving more 😭

Anyways, you should really give it a try. The MC is really like the title, very sober, very benevolent, but also ruthless and determined. I loved his characterisation, really well made for my taste. <<less

The description of this book is very accurate. For the first 90 chapters, the ML gong keeps pursuing the MC who really just wants to be alone. In the beginning, I was prepared to dislike the ML, but was amenable to forgiving him. As soon as the first chapter is over, every other instance where the ML appears has him dedicated to trying to win the MC back.

The first chapter details the premise of their relationship: as a child, the MC was saved by the ML and fell in love... more>> at first sight. Although they slept together (alluded to very briefly, not described explicitly) several times, the ML never seemed to return the MC's feelings despite the MC's deep love for him. Finally, the MC was betrayed and killed by the ML and realizes that his whole world was just a novel.

The first few chapters after this were very entertaining and satisfying to read.
Spoiler

At first, after resetting their story and going back to the beginning when the MC was first rescued, the ML doesn't realize that the MC remembers their past. The MC deliberately ignores him and the ML keeps trying to chase after him. Later, after the ML realizes, he convinces the MC to meet with him and talk and forces him into a kiss.

[collapse]
At this point, I was excited for more scummy and overbearing gong behavior, but after this point, it never really came back to this extent.

The ML gets a fair bit of development as he transitions from dedicatedly pursuing the MC and ignoring his wishes to try to do what's best for him to taking a step back. The ML never fully leaves the MC alone like the MC wants, but supports him as anonymously as he can from the background. Later, it's revealed that
Spoiler

the ML was also in love with the MC even early on in their first life, but believed that the MC was another actor/transmigrator trying to disrupt the plot. He killed the MC believing that it would send him out of the novel world so that he wouldn't have to wait and suffer through the plot. In the mean time, he tries to complete the storyline and score as high as possible so that he can gain more abilities and protect the MC back in the actor/transmigrator world as soon as they meet up again. He's devastated when he figures out his mistake and realizes that the MC was genuinely a book character.

[collapse]

I don't think the ML is a bad person at all. In fact, I forgave him really quickly as soon as I learned his reasons for acting the way he did. He's very pathetic, but in a pitiful way that makes you feel bad for him.
Spoiler

Some may dislike the way he nonconsensually sleeps in the same bed as the MC when he thinks the MC isn't aware, and the way he forces a kiss on the MC, but the MC feels more annoyed than threatened or anything else. I think in another book with a different tone, he would've seemed a lot more scummy and unforgivable but to me, it just came across as pitiful.

[collapse]

In general, I felt that this was a book that was worth reading but there were several things that left me a little bit dissatisfied.

1. This book didn't really feel like a romance. It's only 102 chapters long and the MC doesn't really feel anything more than indifference and even callousness at times toward the ML until after 90 chapters in. It's more focused on him saving the people important to him from his previous life and trying to improve the lives of ordinary people. This was very fun to read for the first 70ish chapters, but near the end, I was getting antsy. The MC and ML's interactions felt quite short and even though the ML is constantly helping the MC out behind the scenes, the MC never really shows any appreciation for it. I completely understand the MC's indifference toward the ML; even if unintentional, the love that was there before might disappear after a betrayal. Still, as a reader, I couldn't help but pity the ML in a way that wasn't very satisfying to read. For some, this might be a plus.

2. The actual romance that comes at the end feels very short and more like a recounting of events than a slow developing of their relationship. In general, the relationship development is not a focus at all. The events that led them to fall in love all happened in the past and are told rather than shown. When they finally start getting back together again, it's also not expanded on in as much depth as I would've liked. In fact, he jumps very quickly from indifference to love. This book spends a lot of time torturing the ML but not so much on the payoff at the end.

3. The MC has random, very powerful abilities.
Spoiler

His blood can heal people, make plants grow faster, and help people grow stronger. This is a result of the entity that controls all the novel worlds pouring some of its consciousness into the MC to allow his world to develop more freely. The MC uses this ability to grow nice crops, make money, and sell medicinal pills.

[collapse]
I suppose he doesn't use it for anything very OP, but it felt incredibly out of place and I don't think it really needed to be in the plot. It would've been just fine if it was only a rebirth/transmigration story, where the only advantage he had was his memories.

Overall, while I wasn't unhappy about the ending (it's HE), I still didn't feel like my need for sweetness was fully quenched. I felt like I was suffering with the ML even though I could understand the MC's apathy. Even though they both get what they want at the end, not enough time is spent just being happy and fluffy.

Some points that others might enjoy that I personally didn't:

Spoiler

As I mentioned, the MC doesn't ever forgive the ML in his second life. Later, they meet again in another novel and the ML has amnesia and has forgotten their past together. However, he's still inexplicably drawn to the MC. They are able to start again on a fresh page without guilt clouding the ML's actions. After this book's plot is completed, they meet again in the actor/transmigrator world where both of them have full memories of the past again.

Among the most disgusting stories I have ever read!

I am fine with r*pe, child ab*se, war crime, psychological torture and everything as long as those follow the logical unfolding of the cause and effect, but I can not stop this story.

The fact that the protag later came back to the person that did not respect his autonomy and will at all is already a big red mark. He mol*sted the protag while the protag was unconscious (licking his lips, touching his body like he was his lover). It was revolting!... more>> Then the story ended with them going back together? It was illogical at quantum level. This was like one of those stories where the girl had to give up everything for the happiness of the ML and the author kept gaslighting her to make it sound like it was in the girl's best interest (you don't like it now but you will come to like it). So the girl's wish is not important. The important thing is the ML wants her so she should accept his compensation and be his lover. This is what this novel is about.

I will not rate this novel I will not recommend it if you are like me and can not endure the blood pressure while reading this disgusting thing bring displayed as beautiful love story.

In case, someone wants to use the don't like don't read rule on me. That rule does not apply to my comment because first of all while I dislike this novel and the character, the reason I do not recommend it was not because of the kind of novel it is. I do not recommend it because just how utterly illogical its progression is. You want me to accept that the person who spent 80% of the novel being disgusted by the mol*st of the ML just turned around in the last few chapters because of some weak explanation to be a good novel? You got to be kidding me. <<less

It's not a lie when I say I read this story as fast as possible to write a review. Of course also because the story is a tad bit different from the usual transmigration stories and a good read.

It starts somewhat similar to the usual transmigration stories but the behavior of MC was unlike the rest of the long list of MC s from other stories who had the same experience. The MC in this story, to put it in the simplest form is a "chill" character. The things he... more>> did following his rebirth was to idle away and live his life.

Spoiler

He does change his life but idling away was the biggest part of it.

There were multiple rebirths in the story. Not just the MC but ML and some people who were close to MC were also sent back with their memories intact.

[collapse]

In general I loved the story and I loved our handsome and unshakable MC. I felt pity towards the ML quite a few times but putting myself in MC's shoes I completely understand his reactions to ML's advances. But I don't think I can say I hate the ML.

Spoiler

It was interesting to see that it revolves around a novel, a system and actors but the setting of this story was somewhat refreshing. And they don't get back together until the very end

[collapse]

Although towards the end I felt like the story dragged slightly, the quality and the place it had already taken in my heart will not change. This easily made into my favorite novels which I wish I can forget completely and read anew. <<less

This novel is good enough to attract me to read till the end. Its the very wife chasing crematorium story where the MC not easily gave in and the ML has to pay his retribution. I really like how the MC was so calm whenever he deals with the ML.

I have mixed feelings about this, don’t get me wrong, it was amazingly written and translated. I can understand both the MC and ML sides, the reasons why they did what they did and their thought process. Both of them were extremely different from each other, which made it difficult, it’s impossible for a person who is from the past to understand the future without living through it (if you know what I mean)

It was angsty and made mad a lot of the time, but I really loved the... more>> way they showed the emotions. I loved how stubborn the MC was, but still my bias came out and made me a little irritated😅

I would recommend this if you can handle BE until the very end for a HE. I worded this wrong, but so be it. <<less

I'm sorry my english is not that good, but I'll try to rate it.

It's a good story, okay.

But the MC heart to stubborn.

Spoiler

yeah, MC didn't accept all the explanation the ML gave him. You now, it's okay at first live, the ML misunderstood the MC it's like him, a player but actually the MC is just a data. But after that ML doing so much to MC didn't even twitch. You know is kinda frustrating, the ML already paid so much like shoot with arrow etc and gave the MC a power to be player so MC didn't disappear but MC just like I want to talk to ML. But obviously ML is gone (actually the world consciousness helped ML) and he still stuck to that.

Actually the MC didn't let go of the past, he still had the shadow in his heart and he can't overcome it.[

I feel sorry for ML, it's frustrating for him. The minus 1 it's for MC who is so stubborn I might die (': <<less

It's well written, I like the narrative and the characters, especially the MC but I can't stand that in the end he's left with the ML garbage, betrayal is betrayal. It's probably because I have a small heart and I don't know how to forgive but I'd rather the MC stay alone than fall into the same hole, I don't think it's wrong to forgive and forget but go back to the person who hurt you just because they had their "redemption", a broken vase still has cracks even if... more>> you fix it and I honestly don't think that kind of relationship is healthy. I stopped reading this novel as soon as I was sure that he ended up with the dross. My heart can't stand that kind of ending. I think it is quite an interesting take on transmigration novels.

The plot development and the twists are not very surprising, I think it is an interesting novel that is worth a read.

Yes the MC & ML ended up together, but I don't think the ML is being a jerk because when you understand the plot more (read on and don't assume!) you would understand why the ML had to do what he had done. There are just a bunch of misunderstandings. Regardless, they didn't end up together in their "2nd"... more>> lives anyway and the ML just passed away. How they ended up together then? Read to find out more...

The ending is ok... like they just coexist in the system working their ass off I guess. <<less

I know it's not MC's false that he doesn't love ML anymore but I feel really bad for ML and somehow hate MC. I couldn't even read how MC lives his life peacefully and skipped a lot of the story. I think if ML is as half selfish as MC, the story would be better read. Yes. I'm here to just say that.

This story is so good. I read it once over a year ago, then read it again yesterday & today. It's really lovely. The couple doesn't have a lot of tender moments until the very end, but... I didn't mind. The story is about forgiving but not forgetting. It's nuanced, complex, well paced, and well translated. Many thanks to the translators & editors for all their effort!

The first half of the novel is a relatively standard "wife-chasing crematorium", but the second half revolves around MC, his fulfillment of past life's clerical regrets. The definition of: wife-chasing crematorium (n. Or adj.) in the first spoiler:

1. A common trope involving romance (s) where (at least) one very devoted/loving party (Party A) is significantly undervalued/treated poorly by the other person or people (Party B) in the romantic entanglement. This typically results Party A leaving/dying/moving on; on the other hand, Party B realizes their feelings and consequences of their actions--resulting in a desperate chase for Party A.

2. Tl;dr Second Chance Trope--specifically after terrible treatment of at least one party within the romance]

**Note: This trope can and often occur with harem/reverse-harem novels, but rarely do they ever commit to multiple partners.

The last few chapters + extras revolve around MC and ML's relationship:
Spoiler

in which, after many years and worlds apart, they finally rest the wrongs of the past to live comfortably and happily ever after. I will say this is the one of most realistic emotional progressions I've seen from an MC in a "wife chasing crematorium" novel. I know second chances are really difficult to give IRL, and MC does indeed take his time to work up the courage to try again with the ML. Considering the level of pain and suffering in his first life, MC was well within the rights to give this novel a BE, but through mutual growth and nothing but time on their hands, they finally connect properly. In the meantime though, ML has been patient and willing to wait, changing from a cold systematic actor to simply someone who loves MC beyond life itself.

[collapse]

This isn't the very best version of this trope I've ever come across, but I don't feel like it was particularly bad or boring either. I read this a while back, but never reviewed it properly! It felt very deliberate with its slow pace, matching the time flow for these characters who pretty much only have time. I quite enjoy "wife-chasing crematorium" novels a lot, this one scratched that itch well enough!

Oh wow... That’s a new type of trope I’ve read. I just knew it would be good. And it did not disappoint.

I honestly love their relationship and how it progressed. Everything went on smoothly and so reasonably. The main CP’s reasons are also soooo reasonable that I don’t know who to blame. MC paid his part. ML paid his part. They got even in the end. It’s just so good.

Crematorium so good I squealed in delight!!! MC is soooo good and so level-headed too!!! I was itching for them to... more>> get together but I was also so conflicted because of their past.

What’s more when you know what happened after and their reasons... I was like, what!!! This is a very interesting plot and I really like it.

First of all, it lives up to its name. I'm no means an expert in Buddhism, but from what I gathered MC does live by the teachings/ideology of Buddhism. At first it was really interesting, later on it became a bit tiring or boring. He embodies positive nihilism, and that means he has little ambition for the future. It made sense for his character, and he wasn't passive, but at the same time it was sometimes a bit boring.

The novel also lives up to its premise of crematorium. I don't... more>> think I have seen the ML suffer so much in any other crematorium novel, do so much to no avail, and take so much time to earn forgiveness (and even then it was kind of implied that he will always remain insecure). It was honestly a bit much considering he wasn't even that irredeemable or s*umbag. Maybe it was because their previous life wasn't really fleshed out, or because I found his reason to be quite acceptable. There was a misunderstanding on his part (MC didn't really misunderstand anything), that explains his actions to me, and it made sense that he made the decisions he made. I understand MC's side as well, and I see that it's an explanation not an excuse. It's kind of part of the story that love can't be forced nor can be forgiveness. Me berating MC for not forgiving ML sooner kind of feels like missing the point, especially since MC didn't ask for ML's devotion and pursuit, he didn't wish any malice on him, just wanted to be left alone. It was kind of ML's own stubbornness that lead him to this, yet at the same time by the end I felt like it was dragged on way too long, and the ML is forever broken by it.

I feel like the yandere tag doesn't fit the ML (more so obsessive). Maybe in the beginning, but to be honest the ML in the very very beginning (the first few scenes with him) was quite different from the ML we actually got. I don't really know how to explain it, but even before repenting and changing his ways the ML felt more subdued and less crazy than in the scene in the beginning.
Spoiler

The scene I'm talking about is when he tricked MC in to a dark courtyard and hugged him. One of his attendant described him as a snake coiling around his target never letting go, implying a much darker nature than he ended up having.

[collapse]
It's hardly something bothersome, I just noticed it and thought I mention it.

In general the ML is obsessive, does a lot of things for MC, helps him out, but is quite forceful about it. I wouldn't call him self-righteous like the story did, but he thinks that as long as he repents the MC will forgive him and love him again. He doesn't demand MC's love and forgiveness, but expects it. When he changes his ways he listens to MC and leaves him alone.

Despite the crematorium and romance being the focal point, it was quite low-key. I have read the whole book, so the end left more of an impression on me, and by then we hardly seen the ML and the story was mostly about the MC's idle life, but it was different in the beginning. The MC doesn't really witness ML's suffering, nor do we, and the MC never really learns the whole extent of it.

Looking back on my review it's quite negative. Despite this I enjoyed the book, but was a bit underwhelmed by where the end developed. All of my complaints are personal dislikes, but in the end objectively this book is excellent. In a technical standpoint there's nothing to criticize in it, it's very well-done, and the translation is also excellent. Even if I don't like the second half (from around chapter 70), I wouldn't say the story dragged, or changed the things I liked in the beginning. And maybe that's the problem, the story is a bit too long. I feel like the plot required the length, but the emotional part wasn't on par with it and the length hurt that. I'm a person that prioritizes the emotions, but others might not find fault with it.

Edit: Actually I decided that yes, the book is way too long. Looking at other reviews hating on the ML, I realized he really did cross a lot of boundaries in the beginning and acted irrationally. He changed his tune pretty early on the book, far from being perfect, but pretty subdued. The length of the book made it seem so distant, that all I remembered was that he acted pretty tolerable, so his suffering wasn't all that satisfying to me. Not to mention MC's lack of emotions for him, be it hatred or love just made it feel more pointless. I realised I wasn't really sold on MC's love for ML in their first life. <<less

Rarely do I tend to like both the MC and ML and in this one I like both. I understand where both come from and I sympathize with what they went through.

I do feel the story should have been shorter, it dragged for awhile. I think 80 chapters would've been sufficient but since the writer is the one in control of the story, I respect their work nonetheless.

Thank you for the translation

I started reading the rest of the story thru mtl. It's fairly well written and enjoyable but I was struggling to remain focused since this isn't the genre I want to read right now. So I'll come back to read the rest.

Translation to ch 19 by Xiao Yunyun translations. It's slow going. I misread the tags and for some reason thought this was a modern day story. I'm interested so far.
